“Having a vagina doesn’t stop me from believing that my balls are bigger than yours” : en kvalitativ studie om kvinnorna i TV-serien Suits / “Having a vagina doesn’t stop me from believing that my balls are bigger than yours”

Sundström, Emma, Kaisäter, Johanna January 2020 (has links)
Historically, women have been given significantly less space than men on the TV screen andtheir roles have often been secondary to men's. The woman's role has often been a passive supporting role alongside the man's main role that drives the action forward (Greene, 2010, ss.1066–1071). This distribution of gender representation aroused the interest to study a television series from the 2010s with three female lead roles. The choice fell on the American series Suits, which takes place in New York's legal profession, an industry that, according tostatistics, is dominated by the male gender (American Bar Association, 2019). In this essay, a qualitative film analysis is performed, focusing on the three female maincharacters in Suits. The study is based on theories of representation, gender and stereotypes and takes a feminist perspective. The study also delves into Laura Mulvey's psychoanalytic perspective which is used to analyze the female representation. The purpose is to create anawareness of how fiction produces gender and how it affects masculinity and femininity. The study examines how women in a male-dominated profession are portrayed on television and how their roles are consistent with, what according to the study's theories, are considered to be female coded. The material has been analyzed focusing on mise-en-scene, cinematography and editing. The analysis is presented in four different themes based on how the women are portrayed and each theme is exemplified by a number of scenes. The analysis shows that there is an imbalance between the male and female representation. The male characters are dominant and the female usually plays a passive and submissive role.

Political Parody on the Cypriot Twitter. : The case of the parody account of the Minister of Justice of the Republic of Cyprus “Lady Emily Kardashian Duchess of Yiolou”

Lampiri, Maria Marisa January 2021 (has links)
This thesis examines how a female politician is being represented in a political parody account on Twitter through a thematic analysis of “Lady Emily Kardashian Duchess of Yiolou” (@edPLOgAQvtTQHJc) Tweets, satirizing the Cypriot Minister of Justice & Public Order Ms. Emily Yiolitis. The analysis of both Tweets and official media outlets, during a fixed period of time, demonstrates how a humorous and at the same time critical act of public discourse, can perform as an expression of political action and a form of activism, which can be approached as a branch of the study of anti-fandom.

Gender diversity and corporate sustainability disclosures in Swedish listed companies : A quantitative study examining female representation on boards and in the CEO role and their effects on corporate sustainability disclosures

Al-Ramahi, Fatima, Alkhatib, Ehsan January 2021 (has links)
This study investigates the relationship between female representation, women as chief executive officers, and corporate sustainability disclosures in Swedish listed companies. The used data was collected from the Swedish listed companies in Nasdaq Stockholm for the period 2017-2020. The specific research period is due to the new amendments of the Swedish Annual Accounts Act (Årsredovisningslagen) which came into force 2017. To investigate the effect female representation, and women as chief executive officers have on the legally issued corporate sustainability disclosures, this study applies content analysis and quantitative methods. By estimating multiple regression models, the results revealed a non-significant relationship of female representation on the board of directors and of women as chief executive officers, on the quality of corporate sustainability disclosures. For the critical mass of at least three women, a non-significant impact is detected. Lastly, an additional test for reversed causality has been conducted, however no significant relationship was documented.

This research thematizes the production of letters by the students of the Thousand Women Program, offered by the Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of Maranhão, in the years 2012 to 2013, in the Maranhão city of Açailândia. The theme of the research is in the area of History of Education and anchored in the assumptions of Cultural History. The general objective of the study is to analyze the representations about the Program and the life course of the students, from the production of letters in the discipline of Portuguese Language and in the Map of Life Workshop. The research sources were 20 letters written by students, 10 in the Portuguese Language course, offered to the class of the year of 2012 and 10 letters written by students of the class of 2013, in the workshop Map of Life, both activities taught by the author of the search. In addition to the letters, the documents produced by the Federal Government about the operation of the Program were analyzed. The Thousand Women Program started as a project in 2007, the result of a bilateral agreement between Brazil and Canada, in order to qualify a thousand women from the North and Northeast regions of Brazil, due to the social vulnerability of a part of them. In 2011, the project became a Program and consubstantiated in a gender public policy. In this course it arrived in Maranhão and in Açailândia and its implementation occurred in the same year, with the offer of the Basic Course of Professional Qualification in Food. In 2015, the Program ceased to function on its campus, for official reasons, which we do not know. With the research, it was noticed that the students participating in this course, according to the report found in the letters, saw in the Program an opportunity to enter the job market, set up their business and go back to study. However, the proposal of this policy to guarantee access to work and study was not enough to include all the women who participated in the course in the local labor market.

Comic books have been gaining space in academic discussions in the last years (GARCÍA, 2012). Thus, among the several issues to be analyzed, the female status in the genre has also gained visibility. The comic book genre is considered to be highly masculine (MELLETTE, 2012) and, as a consequence, the stories present several female stereotypes, such as the mother, the romantic interest, or the damsel in distress. Because of that, we think it is important to analyze female representation in the narratives of comic books, focusing on Sandman (1989-1996), written by Neil Gaiman. We will focus on the female characters of the Endless family – Death, Despair, and Delirium – as well as the character of Desire. To do so, we will use the concept of gender performativity proposed by Judith Butler which shows gender as being discursively created and imposed by social practices (BUTLER, 2014). Gender would be formed by the repetition and stylization of the body, which would, then, lead to the production of a seemly natural structure of being (BUTLER, 2014). Gender is not the essence of something, but instead it is performatic, in the sense that it creates that which it intends to express.

A reflective essay to accompany the thesis exhibition, the Wanderer, installed in the Gordon Snelgrove Gallery, 2013. An exploration of the questions and concepts informing the process of developing and refining the visual vocabulary of my practice. Images of women, topographical maps, floral imagery and astronomical maps provide the vocabulary of the language and syntax that I am developing to enunciate the interrelationships between the construction of self and lived experience, with concepts of identity, body and gesture, history and place.

Ohlson, Elin, Sjögren, Alexandra January 2015 (has links)
Who is the most typical woman in ELLE Sweden (2013)? In this study we investigated the typical woman represented in the Swedish fashion magazine ELLE (2013) for women. Does a typical woman exist in the magazine at all and if so – in what words and roles is she described in? How is this woman perceived in relation to the male gender? Based on the theory of constructionism; that the gender (i.e. What is female versus male) is constructed in the society and that media has an affect on our physical and psychological well being as well as our behavior and thoughts, the investigation of the female gender representation in women magazines, was of great importance to us. As our instrument in this study we used a quantitative content analysis in the purpose of gathering information from 24 reportages (12 issues of ELLE Sweden 2013) where 27 female celebrities in total were interviewed. According to our final results there is a very clear and typical representation of the woman in ELLE Sweden. Among other things she is a successful, white, western, career woman in the entertainment- or fashion industry who is ”beautiful” with blonde hair, lives in the city and admirers the opposite sex.

January 2008 (has links)
Abstract: The aim of this study was to make a comparative analysis focusing on the female literary representations present in two English novels. Through the study of the novels Carmilla (1872), by Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu, and Sabella (1980), by Tanith Lee, we examined the main common characteristics from female characters and their attitudes within the society to which they belong, and with the purpose of finding some possible points leading to a literary female identity construction. From a deep contact with the title-characters Carmilla and Sabella - both female vampires and also representatives of distinct English literary fiction periods - we depict the social-historical contexts to which each author belongs. The analysis is based on some feminist theories developed and propagated along of the 70's and the 80's, which discuss the new places occupied by women in social contexts so far known as "banned", like out-of-house works, politics and sexuality. We also interact with texts related to social female representations linked to the mythological vampire figure - a kind of representation directly associated to some emotional transformations dealing with the primitive opposition between good vs. evil. / Mestre

Kvinnor i kommunala nämnder : En kvantitativ studie i kvinnopolitisk representation

Gudmundsson, Marc January 2009 (has links)
Over the last decades there has been a steady increase in the representation of women on the political arena. Despite of this there are still fewer women in comparison to men in political organs particularly at the municipal level. It is therefore of great importance to examine which different factors that tend to effect the female representation at this level. Doctor of philosophy at Umeå University Jessika Wide presented in a study from 2000 that the share of women in the municipal councils tended to depend upon cultural, socio-economical and political factors. Other scholars also mean that women have specific interests and therefore are more represented in some areas. This thesis has tested if these theories and results of earlier research also can explain female representation in municipal boards in Sweden at present fiscal year. This was done by formulating hypotheses which was tested via statistical measures and regression analyzes. The main findings where that presented theories and factors stated by earlier research in general could help us to explain the female representation also in municipal boards although the variations between the single municipals are huge. Therefore one should not jump to much large conclusions of these results. Although one could say that the findings in this thesis can serves as indicators on the road of explaining female representation in municipal boards.
