Beijo, Marilda. January 2012 (has links)
This work aims at studying the novel genre, analyzing it from the perspective of essay genre, in other words, novel seen as a space that enables the development of essay genre, following narrative and fiction view. In order to do this research, it was used as the work main corpus the following works: Manual of Painting and Calligraphy (1977) and The year of Ricardo Reis‟death (1984), both written by the contemporary Portuguese writer José Saramago. The reflection about the discussion essay fictionalized in the novel develops itself in the following way: at first, it is tried to investigate the embryonic existence of the essay discussion in José Saramago‟s novelistic trajectory, highlighting Montaigne‟s influences in his work. At a later time, a second moment is dedicated to knowledge and systematization of theory about essay genre, approaching the main researchers about the subject, searching for references about the essay since Michael de Montaigne. At last, to continue the research, it was necessary to approach these two novels that make part of the work corpus, trying to demonstrate how the critical essay fictionalized in each one of them occurs, emphasizing how occurs the discussion about the literary making and the artistic making by the means of metalanguage, intertextuality, getting to a critical essay written by the means of narrative fiction / Doutor

Marcon, Adriana. January 2014 (has links)
This dissertation proposes an analysis of Manual of Painting and Calligraphy (1977) and Memories of my Youth (2006), written by the Portuguese writer José Saramago, seeking to highlight their singularities, similarities and differences. It objectifies to show how the novel Manual of Painting and Calligraphy, for having autobiographical vestiges, is the sign of the portrayal of the art/ writing that will be put into practice in Saramago's future writing, while Memories of my Youth, his autobiography, shows the portrayal of the artist/writer when his was young. With the choice of these books that represent, respectively, the beginning and the end of an autobiographical and literary project, it intends to consider the genre tensions installed in the autobiography when written by a novelist, as well as the presence of autobiographical vestiges in a novel. To reach this objective, it appeals to a theoreticalmethodological contribution based on specialists of Saramago's writing, on reflections about novel and autobiography, and on studies of the structural analysis of narrative. After a long way of detailed reflections about the objects of this dissertation, it accomplishes the comparison between the narratives, evidencing the possible connections and differences between both texts / Mestre

Passos, Rodolfo Pereira. January 2013 (has links)
Based in the philosophic work Ser e Tempo (1927), by Heidegger, as our main point, and in accordance with questions as being and truth, we have tried to establish possible parameters to interpret the "blindness" proposed by José Saramago, capable of affecting the contemporary man. We have the post-modern world as the center stage with the intention to expose and to ask about the postmodernism and to reflect about the relation between contemporary society and the consequent relation with Saramago's fiction. Heideggerian concepts will be used as incentive to comprehend Saramago's ideas as dasein, being-in-the-world, who, angst, and being-towards-death. The truth will be deconstructed to show that the rational subject lost his strength inside the complex postmodern world. We'll also think about this blind subject and his walk through a maze city. The reality became plural and the human being could no longer see his epistemological safety. We'll try to understand how the Portuguese writer has utilized these data through an ontological dominant to analyze the human being and his connection with a world marked by a state of blindness, and then, through the fiction, to establish his questionings based on ethic and existence / Mestre

January 2017 (has links)
The memory emerges as one of the main postmodernity social distresses. In the literature, they stand out works that represent in their narrative process, not only their fluid nature but also the human concern in engendering the sets of memories, whether controlling collective thinking or combating forgetfulness. This dissertation has the main goal to think about the memory as one of the main pillars of the postmodern novel, reflecting and interpreting memory representations in the work a maquina de fazer espanhóis from Valter Hugo Mãe. The novel contemplates the narrator's memory rebuilding the recent past of Portugal amongst historic figures and events subjected to fictionalization distortions. The literary work tells the story of Antônio Jorge Silva that, once left by his children in a nursery home holds to the past in an attempt to preserve his identity. In that confination space facing other Silvas, this common hero recognizes himself in other memories connecting past and present into modern literary writing games, that refers to Portuguese symbols, texts and icons. The research is justified by requiring an attentive look on the concept throughout time and finds, in the novel, the ideal gear to represent different pasts in the present time. The concepts to guide such thought are principally based on authors Walter Benjamin (1980), Antonio Candido (1964), Erich Auerbach (1987) and Andreas Huyssen (2000) perspective about the reality representation in the novel and its relation to the memory, as well as Ana Paula Arnaut (2010) and Fernando Rosas (2001) perspective about contemporary Portuguese literature. The work analysis combines the theory with narrative elements proving that its art exposes a concern to preserve the past and think of memory both as a social critic tool and as a poetic resource / Mestre

January 2017 (has links)
Bhabha / Abstract: The curret study proposes an analysis of The Elephant's Journey (2008) by the writer José Saramago and the relation between the novel and Portugal culture, as a Portuguese expansionist country exposing the trajectory of protagonist character, the Indian Keeper Subhro in his constant process of search by his culture aspects valorization, through the context of Hindu culture and customs of the Indian tradition in the border spaces and geographical dislocation. Through these topics, this study will show an analysis of those elements present in the narrative, as well as in the discourse, starting from the idea of culture as the identity construction of being, based on a theoretical-methodological contributions about critical fortune from Saramago and the historical reconstitution of Portugal, considering the hegemonic project of Portuguese Empire from D. Manuel, the fortunate (1469-1521) in the sixteen century. In addition, it aims to present the work as a culture product, based on the theoretical reflections of historiographic metafiction, by Linda Hutcheon. From this reflective study, that keeper Subhro will be analysed as a marginalized character, a theoretical study of these spaces will also be realized, from the reflections of Homi K. Bhabha / Mestre

Denubila, Rodrigo Valverde. January 2018 (has links)
Abstract: This research is based on the hypothesis of understanding the work of the Portuguese writer Agustina Bessa-Luís as an open encyclopedia. It is therefore necessary to discuss the way in which the encyclopedia is structured and which main topics it privileges. It is emphasized here that the term "open", in the title of this work, specifies the aesthetics of incompleteness or the poetics of the unfinished. Justifying the second part of the title, our reflection also aims to identify traces of the composition of the Portuguese writer from the conception of a writing in parentheses, representative of multiplication as qualifier of its compositional method. Structurally, we identify this phenomenon by the presence of different narrative levels and, consequently, of chains of meanings. Thus, we try to reflect on the plurality, as Agustina Bessa- Luís uses this aspect to establish the modalization of voices, truths and knowledge and, thus, give shape to her fictional encyclopedia constructed in more than sixty works. This doctoral research takes as corpus three novels, namely: A Corte do Norte (1987), Um cão que sonha (1997) and A Ronda da Noite (2006), with some incursions by the paradigmatic fictional text of the author in focus: A Sibila (1954) / Doutor

A ficção portuguesa contemporânea na revista Colóquio Letras : seção "Recensões Críticas" (1971-2013) /

Mendes, Amanda. January 2016 (has links)
(Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: This dissertation has for objective to give an overview of the contemporary Portuguese fiction books in Colóquio Letras journal, which has been publishing the best literary criticism produced, in order to identify the critical thinking from the 70s, through review fiction present in the "Reviews" section (novels, short stories and chronicles) of this journal between the years 1971 and 2013. The work also aims to: a) the use of this corpus as a source of research for contemporary Portuguese literature; b) the dissemination of works of contemporary Portuguese fiction; c) the analysis of the journal profile approaching the corresponding political and historical moment in Portugal, as the journal's birth (1971) occurred in a delicate phase in which the country was, shortly after the death of António de Oliveira Salazar (07/27/1970). Reviews are conceptualized as a display of the content of a specific text, added critical and interpretive comments, which discuss, compare and evaluate the works for the purpose of disclosure. The reasons for choosing Colóquio Letras is because it is a quality and credibility journal with respect to literary matters. The dissertation is divided into three chapters: the first presents, describes and comments on the Colóquio Letras journal, and the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation that finances and publishes all these years, contextualizing it in the Portuguese social and political moment; the second chapter is dedicated to the academic gender... Prenúncios de uma revolução: feminino, masculino e sociedade em O número dos vivos / Presages of a revolution: feminine, masculine and society in O número dos vivos

Costa, Yasmin Serafim da 03 December 2014 (has links)
The second novel published by Hélia Correia, O número dos vivos, in 1982, critics the social standards in Portuguese society in the 40s of twentieth century. This critic is achieved in the novel through strategies as irony and parody. The novel has as the model for the parody the realist literature mainly, Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert and O primo Basílio by Eça de Queirós. As a result, there is at the same time a critic to the ideals endorsed by the Realism and to the oppression suffered by women under the patriarchy. Irony is studied in combination with the standard of masculinity created in the second half of 19th century and preserved until the 50s of the next century. The analysis of the masculine characters is based in this relation between the image of man and the foundations of Portuguese society in order to criticize the fundamental institutions of Salazars dictatorship: Family, Church and State. As a way to get rid of the oppression, in the novel, are found predictions of an imminent change that would bring a new configuration to the Portuguese society, where the roles of women and men would be revised, in addition to the return of the democracy.
