The architecture of the Forum of Pompeii

This thesis demonstrates the falsity of the assumptions that ancient architects followed innate spatial cues or responses in their designs, that ancient people experienced the resulting buildings through the same responses, and that modern scholars can thus reconstruct both the intentions of the ancient architects and the architectural effects experienced by ancient visitors to ancient buildings throught the medium of their own spatial reactions. This underlying belief is contestable given its basis in unproven and untested late nineteenth century theories of perception. The thesis also demonstrates that the assumption made by modern scholars that the architects of the Forum of Pompeii were primarily concerned with uniformly enclosed space, axial symmetry, and orthogonality, is wrong, and is contradicted by the actual form of the buildings around the Forum.

The thesis deals with manifestations of lexical dynamics in the language of Internet discussion forums. The chosen communication sphere is typical for its creativity and spontaneity, respectively active exchange of lexical means and the effort for fresh expressions. For these reasons, the language of discussion forums on the Internet is a suitable material basis for the confrontational description of lexical innovations in contemporary Bulgarian and contemporary Czech. The theoretical part of the thesis defines the notion of neologism and the terms connected with it, as well as the specific features of Internet communication. In the practical part, a structural and semantic analysis of Czech and Bulgarian neologisms is carried out, and considering that a large part of the new lexicon used in the discussion forums is borrowed mainly from English, more attention is paid to the interpretation of the meaning of these loanwords and the ways of their adaptation in Czech and in Bulgarian.

Esta dissertação procurou analisar a atuação e o funcionamento do Fórum Estadual Permanente de Apoio à Formação Docente do Rio Grande do Sul (FÓRUM) visando fundamentar as políticas adotadas por esse órgão no seu plano estratégico para a formação docente no estado do RS. Os Fóruns Estaduais são órgãos colegiados criados pelo Governo Federal com o intuito de promover ações que supram as necessidades de formação inicial e continuada dos profissionais do magistério, conforme determinado pelo Decreto n° 6.755 (BRASIL, 2009a). Esses órgãos têm como principais tarefas a elaboração, acompanhamento e revisão dos planos estratégicos de estabelecimento das políticas públicas de Educação Superior, tendo em vista a formação de profissionais do magistério. Para a realização desta pesquisa foi necessário efetuar inicialmente um estudo dos documentos que instituem e constituem a política adotada para a formação de professores no Brasil. As atas de reuniões do FÓRUM foram examinadas e se constituíram uma ferramenta fundamental para o conhecimento do trabalho que vem sendo desenvolvido. A situação dos professores da Educação Básica do RS foi estudada a partir dos dados do Censo Escolar da Educação Básica. Foram utilizados procedimentos metodológicos qualitativos e quantitativos, de forma complementar, pois a diversidade de materiais utilizados exigia abordagens diferenciadas. Parte das argumentações teóricas utilizadas para a análise de dados e discussões foi embasada em referenciais teóricos de políticas públicas educacionais. Nessa perspectiva procuramos utilizar o ciclo de políticas proposto por Ball e Bowe (1992). Outra perspectiva teórica utilizada relaciona-se à formação de professores, a qual foi fundamentada nas ideias de diversos teóricos conceituados na área. O plano estratégico de formação de professores, documento elaborado pelos representantes do FÓRUM, serve para organizar as ações e estratégias criadas pelo grupo para promover a formação inicial e continuada dos professores da rede pública da Educação Básica do Estado. Os estudos realizados evidenciaram que não está havendo compatibilização entre a demanda por formação e a oferta de vagas das Instituições de Ensino Superior, via Plataforma Freire. Os dados do Censo Escolar apontaram que a situação da formação de professores no Estado é preocupante, principalmente no que se refere à formação continuada, e carece de investimentos, assim como as condições de trabalho dos profissionais docentes. Podemos concluir que o FÓRUM não tem sido muito organizado com os documentos que se constituem em registro histórico de seu funcionamento nem tem realizado a revisão e reestruturação do plano estratégico de formação docente inicialmente elaborado. É necessário que o FÓRUM se organize para oferecer formação inicial e continuada concomitantemente, pois é uma urgência do Estado qualificar seus professores. Como a presidência do FÓRUM é de responsabilidade do representante da SEDUC/RS, os interesses e planejamentos do Governo Estadual têm influenciado diretamente as discussões que acontecem nas reuniões. As análises presentes nesta dissertação indicam que ainda há muitos desafios a serem superados pelo FÓRUM para alcançar os objetivos propostos na legislação. / This dissertation sought to analyse the role and functioning of the Permanent State Forum for Teacher Training Support in Rio Grande do Sul (FORUM) in order to support the policies adopted by this organisation in its strategic plan for teacher training in the state of Rio Grande do Sul (RS), Brazil. State Forums consist of collegiate bodies created by the Federal Government in order to promote actions that meet the needs of initial and continuing training of professional teachers, as determined by Decree No. 6755 (BRAZIL, 2009a). These bodies have as core tasks preparing, monitoring and reviewing strategic plans for the enforcement of public policies on higher education with a view to training professional teachers. For this research to be carried out it was initially necessary to conduct a study of the documents which establish and constitute the policy adopted for the training of teachers in Brazil. FORUM’s meeting minutes were examined and proved to be a primary tool for gaining insight into the work being developed. The situation of teachers of Basic Education in RS state was analysed based on data from the School Census of Basic Education. This study employed both qualitative and quantitative methodological procedures as complementary, since the diversity of sources required diverse approaches. Part of the theoretical claims used for the data analysis and discussion was based on theoretical frameworks of public educational policies. With this perspective in mind we sough to adopt the policy cycle as proposed by Ball and Bowe (1992). Another theoretical perspective adopted concerns the training of teachers and is based on the ideas of various scholars renowned in this field of study. The strategic plan for teacher training, a document drawn up by FORUM representatives, serves to organise the actions and strategies created by the Group to promote the initial and continuing training of teachers in public basic education in the state. The study results showed that there has been no compatibility between the demand for training and the supply of places within Higher Education Institutions via the ‘Freire Platform’ (Plataforma Freire). Data from the School Census showed that the situation of teacher training in the state is alarming, especially in regard to continuing education. In addition, teacher training lacks investment, as do working conditions for professional teachers. We can conclude that FORUM has not been quite organised with the documents that constitute the historical record of its operation, nor has it performed reviews and restructuring of the strategic plan of teacher training that had been initially prepared. It is necessary that the FORUM be structured toward providing initial and continued training simultaneously, as it is urgent for the state to provide quality training for their teachers. Since the SEDUC/RS representative is entrusted with the chair of FORUM, the interests and plans of the State Government have directly influenced the discussions taking place in its meetings. The analysis presented in this dissertation indicates that there are still many challenges to be overcome by FORUM to achieve the goals proposed in the legislation.

O processo de formação artística do grupo teve duração de dezoito meses e gerou três montagens de diferentes espetáculos de teatro-fórum. O estudo analisa a dimensão política e estética do Teatro do Oprimido no universo de uma instituição semi-privada e se debruça sobre o processo de preparação corporal para as montagens dos espetáculos. A preparação corporal é o objeto maior deste estudo, ao passo que o entendimento sobre a consciência corporal não se restringiu às técnicas para interpretação e construção da personagem. Nesse sentido, o conceito de Corpo foi se ampliando durante o processo, de maneira tal que os verbos mover-se e redescobrir-se estavam diretamente relacionados à tomada de decisão, posicionamento político e emancipação social. Os jogos da Poética do Oprimido ancoraram o processo de preparação do grupo, respaldando os objetivos cênicos e políticos. A pesquisa coloca o processo do grupo Embasart como uma experiência que foi, ao mesmo tempo, subjetiva, pois se inscreve enquanto um diálogo do sujeito com ele mesmo e o seu entorno, e também objetiva, pois aconteceu de forma concreta demarcando, para o grupo, valores éticos e humanos de uma aprendizagem sensível, coletiva e criativa, em que estavam presentes os princípios de respeito e de solidariedade. / This is a qualitative and participatory research analysis of body preparation process and the aesthetic and political developments of the artistic and educational process performed with the group Embasart theater . The process of artistic training group lasted eighteen months and generated three different mounts shows of forum theater . The study analyzes the political and aesthetic dimension of the Theatre of the Oppressed in the universe of a semi - private institution and focuses on the process of preparation for the body mounts of the shows. The body preparation is the largest object of this study , while the understanding of body awareness was not restricted to techniques for interpretation and construction of character. In this sense , the concept of Body was widening during the process , such that verbs move and rediscover themselves were directly related to decision making , political positioning and social emancipation . The games of the Poetics of the Oppressed anchored the preparation process of the group , supporting the scenic and political goals. The poll puts the process of Embasart group as an experience that was , while subjective , because falls as a dialogue of the subject with itself and its surroundings , and also aims as it happened concretely marking for the group , ethical and human values of a sensitive , creative and collective learning , where were present the principles of respect and solidarity.

Para tanto, parte-se da premissa de que a participação democrática sempre esteve diretamente vinculada à perspectiva territorial e que para ela acontecer é preciso sempre que haja um território de referência. No momento contemporâneo, em que muitos paradigmas começam a ser substituídos, e boa parte das relações a se dar através dos ambientes virtuais do ciberespaço, é possível se pensar que os conceitos tradicionais precisam começar a sofrer adaptações. Baseando-se nesta perspectiva, é que se propõe o conceito de ciberterritório, como sendo o produto das relações obtidas da hibridez dos espaços físicos e virtuais, com interface das tecnologias digitais que, ao propiciarem uma arquitetura de participação, jamais vista em qualquer outra fase da história, podem estar permitindo o alargamento da participação democrática, potencializando espaços de exercício de cidadania e ampliando as possibilidades de articulação política através do ciberespaço. Esse processo é aqui conceituado como ciberdemocracia. O percurso metodológico é concretizado a partir do estudo de caso do Fórum Social Mundial (FSM), através de entrevistas semi-estruturadas com participantes do FSM de 2009, em Belém/PA, do FSM Temático de 2010, em Salvador/BA, e com profissionais de diversas áreas do conhecimento, com a intenção de se verificar, não só a percepção dos participantes do movimento, mas também de outros membros da sociedade, sobre o contexto democrático contemporâneo, mediado pelas tecnologias informacionais digitais. / The purpose of this dissertation is to discuss the relationship with the territorial dimension of participatory democracy in the context of digital society, from ideas and thoughts that involve two conceptual dimensions: technological and digital planning. For this, he parted from the premise that democratic participation has always been directly linked to territorial perspective and that it takes for it to happen whenever there is a reference territory. In the contemporary moment, when many paradigms begin to be replaced and most of the links to be through virtual environments of cyberspace, it is possible to think that traditional concepts need to begin to be adapted. Based on this perspective, is that it proposes the concept of ciberterritório, as being the product of relations obtained from the hybridity of the physical spaces and virtual interface with digital technologies, which, while fostering an architecture of participation, not seen at any other stage history, may be allowing the extension of democratic participation, enhancing spaces of citizenship and increasing the possibility of political articulation through cyberspace. This process is conceptualized here as cyberdemocracy. The methodological approach was implemented from the case study of the World Social Forum (WSF), through semi-structured interviews with participants of the WSF 2009 in Belem, Para, theme of the WSF 2010, in Salvador, Bahia, and professionals in various field of knowledge, with the intention to verify not only the participants' perception of the movement, but also other members of society, about the contemporary democratic context, mediated by digital information technologies.

Informal Social Learning: An Examination of Teaching and Social Presence on a Photoshop® for Beginners Internet Discussion Forum

abstract: The overall purpose of this study was to explore the dynamics of teaching and learning in the context of an informal, online discussion forum. This investigation utilized the Community of Inquiry (CoI) elements of Teaching Presence and Social Presence along with the construct of Learning Presence to examine Adobe® Forums, Photoshop® for Beginners Forum (PfBF) an internet discussion forum designed to provide support for beginning users of Adobe Photoshop. The researcher collected four days of discussion post data comprising 62 discussion threads for a total of 202 discussion posts. During this initial pilot analysis, the discussion threads were divided into posts created by members who were deemed to be acting as teachers and posts written by members acting as learners. Three analyses were conducted. First, a pilot analysis was conducted where the researcher divided the data in half and coded 31 discussion threads and a total of 142 discussion posts with the Teaching Presence, Social Presence and Learning Presence coding schemes. Second, a reliability analysis was conducted to determine the interrater reliability of the coding schemes. For this analysis two additional coders were recruited, trained and coded a small subsample of data (4 discussion threads for a total of 29 discussion posts) using the same three coding schemes. Third, a final analysis was conducted where the researcher coded and analyzed 134 discussion posts created by 24 teachers using the Teaching Presence coding scheme. At the conclusion of the final analysis, it was determined that eighteen percent (18%) of the data could not be coded using the Teaching Presence coding scheme. However, this data were observed to contain behavioral indicators of Social Presence. Consequently, the Social Presence coding scheme was used to code and analyze the remaining data. The results of this study revealed that forum members who interact on PfBF do indeed exhibit Teaching Presence behaviors. Direct Instruction was the largest category of Teaching Presence behaviors exhibited, over and above Facilitating Discussion and Design and Organization. It was also observed that forum members serving in the role of teachers exhibit behaviors of Social Presence alongside Teaching Presence behaviors. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Educational Technology 2014

SearchViz: An Interactive Visual Interface to Navigate Search-Results in Online Discussion Forums

abstract: Online programming communities are widely used by programmers for troubleshooting or various problem solving tasks. Large and ever increasing volume of posts on these communities demands more efforts to read and comprehend thus making it harder to find relevant information. In my thesis; I designed and studied an alternate approach by using interactive network visualization to represent relevant search results for online programming discussion forums. I conducted user study to evaluate the effectiveness of this approach. Results show that users were able to identify relevant information more precisely via visual interface as compared to traditional list based approach. Network visualization demonstrated effective search-result navigation support to facilitate user’s tasks and improved query quality for successive queries. Subjective evaluation also showed that visualizing search results conveys more semantic information in efficient manner and makes searching more effective. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Computer Science 2015

El entorno virtual de educación a distancia es el lugar de nuestro proceso de investigación. Una nueva forma de educación puede definirse como un medio por el que los interactantes de enseñanza y aprendizaje, procesos de expresar sus conocimientos cuando se trata de contenido y, en los foros, demostrando capacidad de mediar la información a través de una escritura de género. Las funciones y el alcance de directos e indirectos del discurso atributos de marca de una nueva manera de construir direcciones, prácticamente. El estudio considera que en los foros un género se manifiesta como soporte discursivo, directa o indirectamente, y los temas sociales que organizan, hacerlo para fines específicos. Los referentes teóricos para el tratamiento de constituir el nuestro estudio incluyen, además de conceptos gramaticales de lo que se considera el discurso directo e indirecto, debates sobre género, desde el círculo Bakhtiniano, además del enfoque sociodiscursiva, históricamente constitutivos de la vida social y cultural, Bronckart (1999) y (2002) depende son miembros del grupo de eruditos con quien queremos construir nuestros enfoques, incluyendo académicos como Swales (1990), Bathia (1994), Miller (1994) y Bazerman (2005), que comprende el género como un evento comunicativo. / Neste estudo objetivamos discutir sobre os processos de construção de sentido em situações dialógicas de um ambiente virtual de ensino e aprendizagem caracterizado pelo fórum. O ambiente virtual de educação a distância é o lugar do nosso processo investigativo. Um novo modo de educação pode se definir por ser um meio segundo o qual os interactantes dos processos de ensino e aprendizagem manifestam seus conhecimentos no que diz respeito aos fóruns, demonstrem capacidade de mediar informações por meio de um gênero escrito. As funções e os alcances dos discursos diretos e indiretos marcam atributos de um novo modo virtual de construir sentidos. O estudo considera que nos fóruns desse ambiente virtual, um gênero se manifesta enquanto suporte discursivo, direta ou indiretamente, e os sujeitos sociais que os organizam, o fazem com finalidades específicas. As referências teóricas para o tratamento dos constitutivos do nosso estudo incluem, além de concepções gramaticais do que se considera discurso direto e indireto, discussões sobre gênero, com base no Círculo Bakhtiniano, além da abordagem sociodiscursiva, constitutiva historicamente da vida cultural e social, Bronckart (1999) e Marcuschi (2002) integram o grupo de estudiosos com os quais pretendemos construir as nossas abordagens, incluindo ainda estudiosos como Swales (1990), Bathia (1994), Miller (1994) e Bazerman (2005), teóricos que compreendem o gênero como evento comunicativo.
