Grounding the Multitude

Kalt, Christina 18 December 2009 (has links)
The thesis investigates alternative visions of democracy through a design project that allows different public groups and individuals to more actively participate in the political realm. The site for the proposed project is the UN Headquarters in New York City, chosen for its juxtaposition of old and new world orders. The project manifests its vision through an architectural representation intended as a platform of multiplicities. Using tools from the backdrop of everyday life: security needs and communication, it attempts to break the static nature of the UN by making it more interactive--like the borderless, virtual world of the Internet we increasingly inhabit today-- and through its new architectural framework to create a self-perpetuating system for social justice.

Storbranden på nätet : En studie i hur kommentarsfält och forum på nätet använder sig av nyhetsartiklar för att skapa diskussion kring en mordbrand. / Major fire on the Internet : a study in how the comment fields and internet forums use news articles to create a discussion around an arson.

Thornberg, Elin, Glössner, Hanna January 2011 (has links)
The main purpose of this study has been to explore and determine how the journalistic work was used by internet users to start and keep a discussion on the internet going. We started in the aftermath of a local arson in a town of Sweden, where a discussion on the internet forum Flashback and the local newspapers commentary fields was raised. We have used these discussions to study what part the journalistic work play in these events. To do that we used a critical discourse analysis and a rhetoric analysis to investigate how these discussions use news articles to make their point. We divided the comments into four different categories, which are comments about understandings of the event, comments that talked about the matters of fact, criticism pointed at the newspaper and comments that identify the offenders. The result of the analysis shows that both forums use journalistic work as facts in their discussions. Both also use earlier articles that were written before the arson, to make their point in the discussion.

The Application of Virtual Community to Knowledge Management in Government Departments¡¦ Aspect: with Online Public Discussion Forum of Government Procurement Law as Case Study

Shieh, Shyue-Ru 05 July 2004 (has links)
Because the e-government policy carries out, government departments in Taiwan built many Websites to show some government decree information in these years. Besides, for catching on public opinion they open some Online Public Discussion Forum on Website to create communication channel between people and government. In other words, we can say this function as ¡§Electronic Democracy¡¨ or ¡§Digital Democracy¡¨. In addition to this function, I think about whether Online Public Discussion Forum can provide an activity platform for Knowledge Management to promote further some government¡¦s administration policy. This research used ¡§Online Public Discussion Forum of Government Procurement Law¡¨ as case study in view of Knowledge Management process activity about Government Procurement Law¡¦s administration. This research used three perspectives--- administration¡¦s process perspective, Virtual Community¡¦s management perspective, and on-line user¡¦s interaction perspective --- to observe this case study. Moreover, summarize these observation and reference feasibility of Government Procurement Law¡¦s administration in the future to recommend briefly the follow points: 1.Based on quick mobility about Government Procurement¡¦s staff in everywhere government entity, difficultly for expending organization of human resource in order to the government reform, and tendency of Government Procurement system development, I recommend to give priority for codification strategy and secondary for personalization strategy. Moreover, combine process-centred strategy with product-centred strategy to become internet strategy. 2.Integrate transaction-based strategy, systematic strategy and socialized strategy into Knowledge Management strategy for Government Procurement Law¡¦s administration¡G (1) Transaction-based strategy: Recommend to build ¡§Knowledge mapping¡¨. Currently responsible entity (Public Construction Commission, Executive Yuan) promoted ¡§seed teachers¡¨ and add undertaker¡¦s name in the official documents published on Website. Moreover, I suggest classifying and appraising the books, training, seminars and so on about Government Procurement¡¦s topic with the Knowledge Management concept. The way will make users to search information and knowledge conveniently. (2) Systematic strategy: Recommend to attach ¡§Knowledge layer¡¨ to ¡§Data layer¡¨ and ¡§Information layer¡¨ on Website. I suggest that responsible entity reorganize these data and information to present easy-touching knowledge for users. Moreover, cultivate user¡¦s problem-solving and innovation ability by themselves with strengthening invest in information technology and promoting users to use these knowledge, information, data. (3) Socialized strategy: Recommend to build ¡§Knowledge Community¡¨. Currently responsible entity built ¡§Virtual Community¡¨ to create a platform for everywhere users. Moreover, I suggest encouraging users to create and open a variety of ¡§Practice Community¡¨ in their organizations and endowed with Knowledge Worker function. The way can convert Tacit Knowledge among people into Explicit Knowledge and make up ¡§Best Practice¡¨. This reorganized knowledge can transfer and share conveniently. 3.In managing Virtual Community aspect, except for responsible entity playing the role of manager and maintainer, I recommend further to play the role of trigger for Knowledge Management. Moreover, combining performance with Knowledge Worker¡¦s function will encourage employees to do positively Knowledge actively in addition to official-documents everyday. 4.If Management of Procurement Professionals can build classify system in the future, I recommend to implement the appraisal system to understand staff¡¦s knowledge internalization and validate professional ability. Moreover, according to requirement for different users, responsible entity should open different sorts and levels¡¦ ¡§Knowledge Community¡¨. This way can add the depth and breadth of discussion on On-line Forum.

A Triple Helix of Learning Processes - How to cultivate learning, communication and collaboration among distance-education learners

Rydberg Fåhraeus, Eva January 2003 (has links)
<p>This work focuses on collaborative learning and how it canbe applied and supported in distance education. Previous workindi-cates that distance learners experience more loneliness, technical problems and lack of stimulation than face-to-facelearners do. Collaboration with peers may improve the feelingof connectedness and engagement. However, collaborativelearning is not the answer to all problems in distanceeducation--and it creates new problems. The present workexplores problems, opportunities and processes whencollaborative learning is introduced in distance education--andsuggests solutions.</p><p>Related research on distance education andcomputer-supported collaborative learning is reviewed andrelated to own research. The different roles of information andcommunication technology in these areas are described.</p><p>Six own research papers are reviewed and integrated. Threeof them explore university courses on computer use in society.Learners interacted mainly through a forum system, i.e. asystem for text-based, asynchronous electronic conferences anddiscussions. The special character offorum communication hadan impact on communication and collaboration processes. Onepaper summarizes these results and deduces a first list of tipsto teachers and systems designers, aiming to reduce problemsand take advantage of collabo-rative-learningopportunities.</p><p>One paper, a report to the Swedish School Board, provides anoverview of research on distance education, withrecommendations for use in secondary schools.</p><p>To get a broader picture of distance-education learners andtheir special situation and interests, a study was conducted inAustralia. Most of the learners were secondary-school students, living far away from towns. Communication was normallyrestricted to mail, radio and telephone. Opportunities forcollaboration between peers were rare, and correspondencetraditions and the lack of technological infrastructure weredelaying changes. However, a development towards morecollaborative learning had started.</p><p>Empirical data were gathered ethnographically in naturalcourse settings. Results were analysed using 'activity theory'as a framework.</p><p>The main contribution of this work is a description of howthree groups of learning processes develop and interact: (a) ofcontent, (b) of communication, and (c) of collaboration. Theyform the spiralling model of a<b>"Triple Helix"</b>. Finally, detailed advice is given aschecklists to organisations, teachers, learners and systemdesigners.</p><p><b>Keywords:</b>Distance education, Collaborative learning,Computer-supported collaborative learning, Information andcommuni-cation technology, ICT, Forum system, Learningprocesses.</p>

SH Karriär : Framtagning av designförslag till visningsvy för karriärforum / SH Karriär : The development of a design proposal for a career forum

Skripcevska, Kristina January 2014 (has links)
Designförslaget skapades i programmet Adobe Photoshop CS5. Resultatet blev ett strukturerat karriärforum som visar användarna vad SH Karriär har att erbjuda på ett färggrannare sätt. / This report describes the implementation for re-designing a career forum called SH Karriär, that has been working since fall 2011.  SH Karriär has in the current state experienced that students at Södertörn University don’t return to the career forum, which initiated a user study to evaluate the issue. The goal was to produce a design proposal for the career forum that presents their range of services in a representative manner.  The re- design allows users to get a clearer view of the content presented on the career forum and creates an interest in revisiting after registering at SH Karriär. The report describes my methodology through a questionnaire survey and usability testing. These methods have given me a foundation for the production of the design proposal that was created in Adobe Photoshop CS5. The result of the design proposal presents a more structured career forum that elucidates SH Karriär’s services with a new colorful approach.
