The creative representation as an expression of "psychic death" characterized by the absence of language

Katan, Michael 30 November 2018 (has links)
The purpose of this research was to study traumatic situations characterized by the absence of language. More specifically, the focus is on the paradoxical relation between the experience of "psychic death" in which language fails and on the other hand, different creative expressions in the arts (in the theatre of Samuel Beckett, in the poetic writings of Paul Celan, and the paintings of Francis Bacon), as well as specific discoveries recreating the possibility of language and even life. This act is made possible by the capability of the artist to support "psychic death" and absence of representation - named in this work "negative language", and to go through it by his art which recreates an access to life, creativity and new discoveries. This subject preoccupied the eminent British psychoanalyst Wilfred Bion and led him suggest an abundance of new theoretical and clinical concepts. The model developed in the present research uses these conceptualizations of Bion concerning the psychotherapist and the psychoanalyst and applies it to the different ways that serve the artist to successfully use creative processes to form a container (a fundamental concept in Bion’s theories), and thus get access to territories and zones which are beyond common language. Bion focuses on therapy while the present model and research focuses on the artistic creation as a testimony coming back from the "region of death". It enables not only to find a "language" for the artist but also to enrich the psychoanalytic psychotherapeutic theorization of Bion, who admitted as Freud did that the artist precedes the psychoanalyst and even paves a new way.

The Nature of the Wind: Myth, Fact, and Faith in the Development of Wind Knowledge in Early Modern England

Druckman, Risha Druckman Amadea January 2015 (has links)

Historically, the wind has functioned in multiple capacities, both physically and symbolically. The following study explores the ways in which natural history, myth and folklore, craft knowledge, and religion contributed to a growing body of knowledge about the wind at a moment in British history when wind knowledge assumed unprecedented political and economic significance. How did people come to know the wind and to narrate and communicate wind knowledge in the seventeenth century? What work did these complex and competing narrations perform? And what do they make visible? In pursuing these lines of inquiry, my work brings together three principle bodies of knowledge: Environmental History, History of Science, and British Imperial history; and it draws upon documents that include scientific treatises, written records of oral anecdotes and weather wising, religious sermons, travel narratives, fictional novels, and imperial correspondence. I argue that because the wind and wind knowledge were ubiquitous to the emerging success and identity of the British empire, a great variety of historical actors sought to control and narrate what wind knowledge was, where it came from, and what political work it should do. These efforts were unequivocally rooted in first hand experience and observation of the wind--maker's knowledge--and created what I call an intellectual commons that enabled commoners as well as elites to shape and briefly control the contours of wind knowledge in early Modern Britain and its expanding empire.
/ Dissertation

Letters to Francisco : negative imagery in art and the depiction of microstructural elements of the human body

Milos, Emil January 2006 (has links)
"The thesis itself, involves some psychological and philosophical aspects and thoughts about fear as the main mover in the so called negative aesthetic. This specific method of self-expression, its possible triggers and the reasons that may initiate art creation on the basis of pessimistic and ugly imagery have not been discussed to a great degree in the past. Generally, the content of this writing is focused on the fictious correspondence between two engravers and printmakers. These invented letters serve as an exposé for practical findings and thoughts about the author's works executed during the period 2005-2006." / Master of Arts

Les mondes du voyageur : une épistémologie de l'exploration (XVIème - XVIIIème siècles) / The worlds of the traveller : an epistemology of exploration (16th-18th centuries)

Gallegos Gabilondo, Simon 22 June 2016 (has links)
This study examines the issue of exploration, as it stands in the travel chronicles that have forged modern world cartography between the Renaissance and the Enlightenment, favouring the analysis of epistemological questions between the new and the unknown. Through an examination of this corpus about America, and the geographical and political speculation about the Southern Land, it shows, on the one hand, that a regime of spatiality begins with these texts; on the other, that its history is also the history of philosophy, as far as it conceived itself on the model of exploration in the baconian tradition until D’Alembert in the 18th century. It identifies the historical foundation of geographical images used in the modern thought, as well as continuity among knowledge production and the production of a space to discover by exploration travels, about which, unlike Blumenberg’s metaphorology, Foucault’s archaeology founds a limit. Then, it questions the exploration’s anthropological horizon of meaning, particularly by the controversy of a giant human species in the New World, and examines the scientific appropriation of this literary figure in the natural history from Acosta to Buffon. Lastly, after a look on the ambiguous relation between the ageing world thesis and the epistemological openness of possible objects of exploration, it proposes an analysis of the importance of the gigantum demonstratio in Vico’s philosophical program.

This thesis aims to perform a spatial and temporal analysis of the gully of Grito Stream, located in the urban perimeter of the city of Rancharia, and present the proposals to control this peri-urban erosion. This gully presents evidence of development dating back to the 1960s, recent episodes of damage to urban infrastructure and the presence of active erosive processes at the banks. To present a geographic analysis of this case of erosion process are presented aspects of land use history in the municipality of Rancharia and physical-geographic aspects and land use changes in the watershed of the Grito Stream and in detail scale the cartographical information on the gully. In view of this case of erosive process that is perpetuated for five decades, in this thesis detailed geographic information of the gully is presented from data collected in topographic surveys with geodesic equipment. For twenty-four months, a topographic monitoring of borehole plots was carried out, where a ridge erosion greater than 1.5 m was observed in four points and an average of 0.85 m, in all the monitored plot there was a loss of 305.9 square meters of area. In relation to the erosion process control proposals, buses with plant fiber (Bambusa bambos L.) were implanted in an experimental plot with soil level monitoring by means of erosion pins, and from a comparative analysis there is a greater upper soil movement in the experimental plot without the use of buses. Based on the measurements of soil movement levels and soil density data, estimates of soil loss were presented in the experimental plots. In the area of the experimental plot with barriers native plant species were planted with the intention of contributing to the recovery of the degraded area. In this sense, based on detailed geographic information on the area degraded by the gully of the Grito Stream, the thesis aims to contribute in the planning of future measures for an effective recovery of this area in Rancharia. From the empirical proposal presented in this thesis are presented ways to rethink the philosophy of Bacon and his contributions on Geography. / FAPESP: 2013/05664-4

Francis Bacon e a nova indução: reforma do entendimento e restauração do homem / Francis Bacon: reform of understanding and restauration of humankind

Motta, Carlos Jacinto Nascimento 23 October 2015 (has links)

No. of bitstreams: 1 Carlos Jacinto Nascimento Motta.pdf: 1413752 bytes, checksum: 466d45d754b40761f382c04cc0cb65a4 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2015-10-23 / The PhD. thesis here offered has as its aim the presentation of the Baconian conception of induction, understood as an essential element for the realization of Francis Bacon s project of a Restauration of by means of a reform of learning and sciences. In his most important and influente work, the Instauratio Magna, Bacon highlights the need for a wide survey of both the knowledge and sciences already established in order to know which of these should be abandoned, which perfected and which still are in need of implementation. Once this is achieved, and with due governamental support, a new scientifical era was supposed to begin and many advancements would also be achieved by Humankind. Notwithstanding, as Bacon points out, the reformation of sciences demands a change in the proceedings used by the investigator, which, in turn, results in a reformulation of both the idea of experience and the pattern of inference. It also indicates that the new scientifical era demands the establishment of investigative communities instead of isolated researchers, so that common mistakes to human nature should be avoided. This change, however, could only be realized in a mind duly cleansed of prejudices caused by both the philosophical tradition and by the natural characteristics of Humankind. The first were supposed to be corrected by means of the purging of idols, i.e. false notions which inhabit our mind and are imposed by culture; the latter, being these the greatest impediments on account of having to do with human nature itself, would be corrected by means of three different modalities of help, which combined form the novum organum (the new induction) or the new pattern of Bacon s scientific inference. This new induction must be understood in the contexto of the need for reformulations which promote the necessary aid to the investigator, being the histories the aids to the senses, the tables of presentation of instances the aids to memory and the new induction (Novum Organum) the aid to reason. Thus, we understand that the best interpretative key as regards the Baconian epistemology is the proposal of a reform of human understanding, and not merely the reformation of the logic used in investigations. Such reform would possibilitate the emergence of a new man, gifted with new logical tools and which would cooperate with other researchers towards the aim of assembling a type of inferential device, a collective investigative machine / A tese de doutorado aqui apresentada tem por objetivo apresentar a concepção baconiana de indução entendida como elemento essencial para a efetivação do projeto de Francis Bacon de uma Restauração da humanidade por meio da reforma do conhecimento e das ciências.

Hora, José Sandro Santos 25 February 2014 (has links)
The overall objective of this research is to analyze the reception of the philosophy of Bacon in certain theoreticians of environmental sciences. The specific objectives are: to explore the Baconian concept of nature, the concept of progress and the absorption of these concepts in environmental sciences. The work is structured in three chapters. The first deals with the concept of nature. The second is about the idea of progress and the last one presents an analysis on certain appropriations of the Baconian philosophy in Hans Jonas, Andrew Brennan and Mauro Grün. The research is fundamental and bibliographic. Thus, the methodological procedures adopted were reading and textual analysis The relevance of the work consists in two fundamental points: Bring the Baconian thought for nvironmental discussions. ii) Criticizes the hegemonic vision of environmental sciences against modernity. It is in this sense that we store expectations to increase the existing bibliography on Bacon, especially with respect to the relevance of his thought. This research seeks to interdisciplinarity in so far as it interacts not only with the ph ilosophy, but also with the sociology, ethics and environmental education. A pesquisa é fundamental e bibliográfica.
