Transitioning Wood Furniture Products towards Sustainability

Lu, Lei, Zhang, WeiGuang, Zhang, WeiQing January 2008 (has links)
Wood Furniture Products (WFPs) play a significant role in both the global economy and the transition of society towards sustainability. This paper begins with a brief description of the industry and highlights the current challenges and compelling measures of WFPs from a systems perspective through the lens of the Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development (FSSD) and by applying backcasting from sustainability principles (SPs). An examination of the challenges and opportunities of WFPs is performed using an ABCD analysis based on Strategic Life Cycle Management (SLCM). SLCM and Templates for Sustainable Product Development (TSPDs) approaches were applied in order to engage the participating Ningbo Fubang Company in the transition process towards sustainability and to provide an applicable tool for WFP development. The TSPDs were created based on the views of sustainability and WFP experts. This has developed the templates further and contributed to the overall development of the WFPs towards sustainability. Other recommended and compelling measures for the sustainable development of WFPs include: cooperating with non-government organizations (NGOs), conserving forests resources, clean production methods, "take-back" policy in the wood furniture industry, reforming government policies relevant to the industry, implementing waste management systems, green supply chains, clean energy use and distribution, and smart packaging.

ANÁLISE DO PROCESSO DE DESENVOLVIMENTO DE PRODUTOS DO SETOR MOVELEIRO DE SANTA MARIA SOB UMA PERSPECTIVA AMBIENTAL / ANALISYS OF THE PRODUCTS DEVELOPMENT PROCESS IN THE FURNITURE SECTOR OF SANTA MARIA THROUGH AN ENVIRONMENTAL PERSPECTIVE

Mello, Carolina Iuva de 27 March 2008 (has links)
The environmentally responsible companies have looked for strategies to minimize the environmental impacts of its products and processes and at the same time they try to be more competitive. The end-of-pipe technologies are no longer enough to evolve towards sustainability; it is necessary efficient pro-active attitudes as the integration of the environment during the development process of the products. The purpose of this study is to draw a panorama about the question of the environmental sustainability during the products development process at the furniture industry in the city of Santa Maria, in the State of Rio Grande do Sul, trying to show ways to make better the environmental sustainability of the sector. It was carried out a literature review where it was analyzed the strategies and tools known, which could be relevant to the development process of the products and also help to better understand the opportunities that are already being used. The development process was divided in the pre-production-phase represented by the furniture designers, production-manufacture-phase, represented by the furniture factories and post-production-distribution phase represented by the stores that work with furniture. It was analyzed separately the strategies and tools that can be used in each phase. After, it was carried out a qualitative survey through a questionnaire with different actors involved in the process (designers, store owners, manufacturers) where it was evaluated the environmental posture of the sector as a whole. After, based on the result got in the survey, it was suggested some improvement opportunities in the furniture sector in Santa Maria in favor of the environmental sustainability without forgetting the main obstacles to such opportunities and ways of surrounding them.

Performances des assemblages par tourillons soudés / Performance of the dowel welded wood furniture joints

Segovia-Brandt, César 15 September 2010 (has links)
A wood joint is a method which makes it possible to maintain together two parts according to the consumer’s requirements (esthetic, mechanic resistance, life cycle) and the wood industry politic. This work is framed in the structural solid wood welding by mechanic friction to use in joineries, cabinet makings or constructions. We will show the feasibility of the welding joint design obtained with rotary friction using a traditional drill press and an automatic welding machine, which allows us to find furnishing’s industry applications. This process, which has been studied only for some years (2001), has been discovered in a polymer contribution study in the adhesion of solid wood. It can be carried out by linear alternative frictions or by rotation of a cylindrical part (called dowel) in a drilling of smaller diameter. In both case, the rise of temperature generated by frictions produces the fusion and the mixture of the lignocellulosic matter, which makes it possible for the two pieces to be welded without any matter contribution but only with the fibers’ tangle. The objective of this work is the parallel and perpendicular fibers joints, the most used in the furnishing design, through three kinds of assembly: bevel, half-lap and the groove and tongue joint. About the parallel fibers joints, we made the comparison between the ones welded, the ones nailed and the last ones gluing. For the type T perpendicular joints, comparison has only been made between the welding and those of gluing ones. For the type L perpendicular welding, the study was carried out according to the procedure CTBA L-161 (2000) of French Standard NF P 20-501. Finally, about the panels, we showed the laminated-welded without adhesive joints performance

Designing an efficient Collection process for Discarded furniture

Liao, Yin January 2017 (has links)
The furniture industry is a thriving industry in the past decades all over the world. The increase in production and sales of furniture products means that more raw materials are needed and more furniture waste is produced at the same time. Taking into account the unsolved environmental issues, it is necessary to make innovation changes to reduce the waste and overcome the continuously increasing resource consumption. Circular economy draws a wide attention under this situation. As an alternative to replace the traditional linear consumption model, it balances the economic development and environmental concern. Turning waste into a new resource is a profitable opportunity for the furniture industry. However, product recovery in this industry meets obstacles due to the character of the furniture. This study considers discarded bulky furniture products. It focuses on the first step of furniture waste recovery: the collection process. The aim of this research is improving the efficiency of a “many to one” collection process in a reverse logistics system and increasing the recovery level within the hierarchy of options for discarded furniture. By using the soft system methodology, this study explores the current discarded furniture collection situation within Europe and then analyzes each essential element of this collection system. After that, combining with the relevant circular economy theory and information gathered from a case furniture company, we design a new conceptual business process model for discarded furniture collection. In the newly designed model, the collection process is carried out by the individual transport option with sufficient capacity from customer’s home to the furniture store. The new model is based on a collaborative lifestyle information platform. By managing the real-time information, the platform aligns individuals’ transport resources with discarded furniture demand to reduce the transport cost of the collection process. This model aims for optimal use of the available individual resources to complement the transport process. Moreover, this information platform helps to collect information in the early stage to reduce the uncertainty of reverse logistics.

Internationalization and Performance among Small and Medium-sized Firms : A study of furniture producers in Sweden

Devine, Åsa January 2010 (has links)
Furniture production in Sweden still exists on a comparably small scale. The majority, or more than 99 percent, of all furniture producers in Sweden are small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) with less than 250 employees. Despite their size, these firms are, to a large extent, involved in export. This is fully in line with the accelerating trend of internationalization found among firms of all sizes. However, research focused on internationalization has been primarily concentrated on larger firms, which is unfortunate considering that the vast majority of all firms within the European Union can be described as SMEs. The purpose of this research is, therefore, to extend our understanding of internationalization and performance among small and medium sized firms by explaining export involvement and performance among small and medium sized furniture producers in Sweden. This research is completed within the theoretical framework of the modified PSE model, which consists of four components: perception of export barriers, strategy competence, export involvement, and performance. A quantitative survey was conducted among 324 firms, yielding a response rate of 56 percent. The empirical data was analyzed using the methods of multiple linear regression, logistic regression, and ordinal regression. The result suggests that strategy competence, measured in terms of relatedness and market knowledge, explains the main export mode and performance among exporting SMEs. In addition, main export mode seems to explain performance. The main findings of this research are visualized through a new model, SCEMPER. Another finding is that barriers originating with the owner/key decision-maker of a firm seem to prevent firms from becoming involved in export. In addition, attitude towards export and the age of the firm appear to be important determinants of export involvement and performance among SMEs.

The Brazilian design work of the Campana brothers from the perspective of Complex Relations

Ferreira, Claudio Lima 06 September 2011 (has links)
Orientador: Haroldo Gallo / Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Artes / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-18T17:18:10Z (GMT). This doctoral thesis seeks to analyze the Brazilian design work from the perspective of the Complex Relations, using the Campana brothers as case study. The research is divided into three chapters, the theoretical bases of which are respectively Simplifying Thinking, Complex Relations and Complex Thinking. The connections between theory and the practice of design were emphasized in each chapter of this essay by means of the comparison between Simplifying Thinking, Complex Relations and Complex Thinking, with practical experiences made evident by the design processes performed in the contemporary design, particularly in the work of the brothers Fernando and Humberto Campana. The Simplifying Thinking is based on reason, rationalism and rationalization, which means a simplification of the thought. The simplification principle is still imperative, which is reflected in the design process. By means of the Simplifying Thinking as a theoretical basis, it is established that current design is focused, in sundry cases, only on the profit and consolidates over a fragile, unsafe basis, as a tool which produces innovation, aesthetic beauty and / or customization of objects. Currently, one thing that can be noticed is that the bases of the classical scientific thinking referred to as "simplistic" are unstable because of the development of a new, more global, way of thinking that does not intend to rupture with the previous one, but to show a way to picture things as a whole. This new manner of thinking is called Complex Thinking and is based on the complex, derivative from the Latin word complexus, which means "weaving together". This contemporary thinking is able to gather, contextualize, globalize and, at the same time, recognize the unique, the individual and the concrete. It can be understood, from a contemporary perspective, that the Simplifying Thinking has been outranked and the Complex Thinking is yet being developed. Therefore, this paper constitutes and presents a third form of analysis over the process of design, called Complex Relations, which is stated between the Simplifying Thinking and Complex Thinking. This does not constitute a new way of thinking as Simplifying and Complex Thinking, but a way of understanding this turbulent space that lies between these two ways of thinking. The Complex Relations highlight the transition and the connection between both forms of organization of thoughts above mentioned and contribute to our understanding of the creative process in the contemporary scenario / Doutorado / Artes / Doutor em Artes

Velký dům pro malé město / A Great House for a Small Town

Krejčířová, Zuzana January 2016 (has links)
The subject of this thesis is the conversion and extension of the former School of Industrial High School in Rousínov furniture and expansion of housing for the elderly. School buildings were built in the 70s of the 20th century and today are only partially and temporarily used, and are waiting for its rebirth. The aim of the project is to open the area to people and incorporate it into the daily life of citizens Rousínov. Cinema, restaurants, galleries, clubs and housing - it's all part of the new city center. Already incurred background builds housing for the elderly, which is its location in the heart of a quality place for the next stage of life. By activating these functions is an isolated island in the city center becomes a full-fledged part of the public space Rousínov. The first stage is the conversion of schools to the cultural and community center. Slogan conversion is cleansing. Clean up objects from unnecessary structures and layers of history. Show support structure and inject new energy into the buildings. The construction itself enables spatial play of vertical and horizontal surfaces. Space clubrooms and galleries are open to the second floor, housing units are designed as maisonettes. Everything is simple and functional. It remains only the pace of life, which objects to bring residents Rousínov. As a next stage will be created in the area of housing for seniors. Demand for housing for the elderly is still high and it's no different in Rousínov and surroundings. In the House of care service that is not on the edge and the capacity is insufficient. Therefore, the potential use of school premises in the town center is a suitable solution for senior housing. The proposal does not find one universal solution for all, but aims to promote the uniqueness and future residents based on their individual needs. Therefore, there is no one big complex retirement home, but three different objects according to the degree of autonomy of the population.
