"Jag tror att de tog LSD" : En kvalitativ innehållsanalys om representationen av Heaven’s Gate i HBO’s dokumentärserie Heaven’s Gate: The Cult of Cults / ”I Think They Took Acid” : A Qualitative Content Analysis of the Representation of Heaven’s Gate in HBO’s Documentary Series Heaven’s Gate: The Cult of Cults

Åkerblom Svensson, Louise January 2024 (has links)
The representation of new religious movements in documentaries and mainstream media affects our understanding of and attitude toward new religious movements. Scholars argue that media shapes our knowledge of new religious movements and that we most often trust this information as truthful. This study aims to investigate and analyze the representation of Heaven’s Gate in HBO’s documentary series Heaven’s Gate: The Cult of Cults and whether this representation can be useful in a classroom context. The data was retrieved by closely watching the four episodes of the documentary series while taking notes and rewatching the documentary series until relevant information and quotes were retrieved. The research method employed was a movie analysis, more specifically a qualitative content analysis. The theoretical framework used is drawn from Joseph Laycock and his three identified narratives in which media tend to portray new religious movements: medicalization, deviance amplification, and convergence. The results reveal that the documentary series uses these narrative features in various ways, but it also challenges and contrasts them. Furthermore, the conclusion of the representation is complex and nuanced. The documentary series presents a respectful, informative, and somewhat equitable representation, but also reinforces stereotypical and negative societal discourses. Additionally, this study suggests further study in the field of documentaries and new religious movements to explore the representation of other new religious movements.

LEVERAGING INTERNET PROTOCOL (IP) NETWORKS TO TRANSPORT MULTI-RATE SERIAL DATA STREAMS

Heath, Doug, Polluconi, Marty, Samad, Flora 10 1900 (has links)
ITC/USA 2006 Conference Proceedings / The Forty-Second Annual International Telemetering Conference and Technical Exhibition / October 23-26, 2006 / Town and Country Resort & Convention Center, San Diego, California / As the rates and numbers of serial telemetry data streams increase, the cost of timely, efficient and robust distribution of those streams increases faster. Without alternatives to traditional pointto- point serial distribution, the complexity of the infrastructure will soon overwhelm potential benefits of the increased stream counts and rates. Utilization of multiplexing algorithms in Field- Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA), coupled with universally available Internet Protocol (IP) switching technology, provides a low-latency, time-data correlated multi-stream distribution solution. This implementation has yielded zero error IP transport and regeneration of multiple serial streams, maintaining stream to stream skew of less than 10 nsec, with end-to-end latency contribution of less than 15 msec. Adoption of this technique as a drop-in solution can greatly reduce the costs and complexities of maintaining pace with the changing serial telemetry community.

Développement de la sensibilité dans l'imagerie médicale TEP à détecteurs multiples

Rechka, Sanae January 2010 (has links)

Modular Field Programmable Gate Array Implementation of a MIMO Transmitter

Shekhar, Richa 10 1900 (has links)
ITC/USA 2010 Conference Proceedings / The Forty-Sixth Annual International Telemetering Conference and Technical Exhibition / October 25-28, 2010 / Town and Country Resort & Convention Center, San Diego, California / Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) systems have at least two transmitting antennas, each generating unique signals. However some applications may require three, four, or more transmitting devices to achieve the desired system performance. This paper describes the design of a scalable MIMO transmitter, based on field programmable gate array (FPGA) technology. Each module contains a FPGA, and associated digital-to-analog converters, I/Q modulators, and RF amplifiers needed to power one of the MIMO transmitters. The system was designed to handle up to a 10 Mbps data rate, and transmit signals in the unlicensed 2.4 GHz ISM band.

Knowledge maturity as decision support in stage-gate product development : a case from the aerospace industry

Johansson, Christian January 2009 (has links)
In today’s fast-paced industry where fight for market share is fierce and reaching the market ahead of competition imperative, product development is a target for lead-time reductions. In this context, in product development in stage-gate processes, decisions need to be made even though knowledge and information are scarce and flawed. The challenge is how to support the decisions that are made in light of uncertainty and ambiguity. The thesis moves from analysing the role of the stage-gate process within the aerospace industry. The stage-gate process was more than a decision making mechanism, and instead a mechanism that facilitated communication, discussion and knowledge sharing between team members, as well as supported knowledge creation and shaping of the boundaries between people’s different perceptions of the knowledge base. However, the communicative and negotiative function of the stage-gate was highly dependent on the ability of the participating individuals to reflect on the status and quality of the available knowledge assets used throughout the process. To make this reflective activity an explicit part of the stage-gate practice, this thesis proposes the application of a knowledge maturity concept at the gates to raise the decision makers’ awareness of the status of the knowledge assets handled at the decision point. The knowledge maturity concept considers three basic dimensions: input, method/tool and experience/expertise in assessing the knowledge base maturity. The scale is intended to act as a boundary object, facilitating the knowledge creation process by highlighting the current status of the knowledge base and making stakeholders aware of the nature of the project’s uncertainties and ambiguities. In the knowledge maturity concept, its purpose is to support design teams at the gates in taking appropriate action, mitigating risk and focusing their efforts on improving the knowledge assets where it is needed most, regarding the situation at hand and, finally, to make more confident decisions. The thesis was developed within the EU FP6 VIVACE (Value Improvement through a Virtual Aeronautical Collaborative Enterprise) and EU FP7 CRESCENDO (Collaborative and Robust Engineering using Simulation Capability Enabling Next Design Optimisation) projects, and within the Faste Laboratory, a VINNOVA Excellence Centre involving partners from the Swedish manufacturing industry.

An analysis of implementing open road tolling through the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project (GFIP)

Malahleha, Thabiso 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MDF) -- Stellenbosch University, 2011. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The aim of this research report is to analyse the feasibility of Open Road Tolling (ORT) and its development in South Africa through the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project (GFIP). ORT represents the next generation of Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) and this research report will assess to what extent the GFIP scheme is in line with other comparable tolling schemes; and is the institutional environment amenable to ORT. This will allow one to gauge the feasibility of the scheme and its potential for acceptability and success. The research report outlines the number of risks that come with an ORT scheme and these include amongst others collection risk, enforcement, technology, privacy and public acceptance. The success of the GFIP will largely be determined by how well these risks are mitigated and how the benefits can be marketed to the users. The literature review illustrates that whether road pricing schemes have failed to move forward, have been implemented, are currently under development, or still in the planning stage as a concept there are several consistent lessons and critical success factors one should apply when structuring a scheme. In the discussions with stakeholders, the following conclusions with regards to the feasibility of ORT and its development in South Africa were as follows: - The factors which need to be addressed include political risk, effective marketing of the scheme to the public, obtaining political will and support, building trust between the scheme developer and the user, managing perceptions and acknowledgement of the fact that the scheme will need to prove itself over time. - Inadequate demonstration - Incorporating interoperability yields benefits in terms in terms of network externalities, the ability to use a single transponder for multiple tolling plazas and points, along with the potential for alternative uses for the transponder. - ORT as a viable solution for the GFIP is feasible from a technical point in that it’s the only way in which one can collect tolls from a high volume network and not cause disruptions in the flow of traffic. However, there are a number of persistent residual risks that SANRAL cannot entirely mitigate and some fall under the realm of political risk. - While SANRAL has applied best practice principles in structuring the GFIP with the aim of providing value for money for the user and as far as possible tackling the issue of affordability, there are certain realities, such as the recent global financial crisis, the infrastructure backlog of the country, users paying for roads which were free and challenges with overall service delivery which place a strain on the legitimacy of the GFIP ORT scheme.

The design and testing of a superconducting programmable gate array

Van Heerden, Hein 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MScEng (Electrical and Electronic Engineering))--University of Stellenbosch, 2006. / This thesis investigates to the design, analysis and testing of a Superconducting Programmable Gate Array (SPGA). The objective was to apply existing programmable logic concepts to RSFQ circuits and in the process develop a working prototype of a superconducting programmable logic device. Various programmable logic technologies and architectures were examined and compared to find the best solution. Using Rapid Single Flux Quantum (RSFQ) circuits as building blocks, a complete functional design was assembled incorporating a routing architecture and logic blocks. The Large-Scale Integrated circuit (LSI) layout of the final chip is presented and discussed followed by a discussion on testing. This thesis demonstrates the successful implementation of a fully functional reprogrammable logic device using RSFQ circuitry.

Radiation tolerant implementation of a soft-core processor for space applications

Van der Horst, Johannes Gerhardus 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MScEng (Electrical and Electronic Engineering))--University of Stellenbosch, 2007. / The availability of high density FPGAs has made the use of soft-core processors an attractive proposition for the low volume space market. Soft-core processors combine the power of programmable logic with the ease of use of a conventional processor to provide a highly customisable solution. However, the SRAM FPGAs used as implementation platform are especially susceptable to radiation induced single event upsets, due to the sensitivity of their configuration memory. To safely use these processors in a space environment requires the modification of the processor to safely mitigate these effects. This thesis presents the process followed to develop and test a fault tolerant implementation of an 8-bit PicoBlaze soft-core processor on a Xilinx Spartan-3 SRAM FPGA. A thorough investigation was made into the available methods that can be used to mitigate single event upsets, in order to identify the most suitable ones. Guidelines for the application of SEU mitigation techniques to SRAM FPGAs were proposed. A single event upset simulator was designed and constructed to compare the different techniques. It mimics SEUs by injecting errors into the configuration memory of an FPGA. The results of error injection were used to develop a PicoBlaze implementation with limited overhead, while it still offers a high degree of error mitigation. Three different designs were tested by proton irradiation to verify the protection afforded by the mitigation techniques. It was found that protected designs were more robust. The cross-section of the FPGA was also determined, which can be used with the SEU simulator to predict the dynamic cross-section of designs. The work contained in this thesis demonstrates the use of open-source intellectual property with commercial-off-the-shelf components to develop a robust component for use in the miniature spacecraft market.

The development of a IGBT-based tap changer

Fourie, Reinhart 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MScEng (Electrical and Electronic Engineering))--University of Stellenbosch, 2010. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Voltage regulation on distribution networks has so far been done by means of mechanical tap changers. However, these tap changers are plagued by high maintenance costs due to the arcing caused while switching, which degrades both the contacts and transformer oil. The major advances made during the last decade with regard to semiconductor technology have led to the development of high power IGBTs. These high power IGBTs are capable of conducting currents up to 1 000 A, while the voltage over the IGBT reaches well over 3 000 V. Using these high power IGBTs to design and build a solid-state tap changer allows the tap changer to regulate the output voltage with higher accuracy and speed. The supporting hardware is also discussed, while the design is verified by the use of simulations and practical measurements conducted on a scale-model of the IGBT-based solid-state tap changer.
