Applied theatre with gatekeepersJerke, Lauren 02 May 2022 (has links)
Applied theatre projects that aim to address social justice issues almost exclusively involve those who are experiencing injustice; while members of the state, who actively maintain the status quo, are frequently overlooked, despite the fact that they are essentially gatekeepers of social justice. In projects that do involve current and/or future members of the state, the root cause of social injustice and the systems, institutions, and ideology which support capitalism are only briefly mentioned, if at all. For this arts-based, anti-oppressive research, I facilitated three applied theatre projects that involved future and/or current gatekeepers. For each project, I considered the conditions that provided participants the opportunity to identify and question dominant ideology through the dramatic process. Having analyzed each case, I found that when applied theatre is structured using a revolutionary approach, it can cultivate felt understanding and deepen critical consciousness. In order to truly address issues of social justice with the goal to ending them, I argue for dedicated spaces where future and current gatekeepers can participate in applied theatre to critically examine the ideas that support capitalism, and the tendency and temptation to draw lines in the sand between “us” and “them”. / Graduate

SECONDARY SOCIAL STUDIES CURRICULAR-INSTRUCTIONAL GATEKEEPERS’ EXPERIENCES IN IMPLEMENTING CULTURALLY RESPONSIVE PRACTICES AMIDST THE CURRENT SOCIO-POLITICAL CLIMATEGodwin Gyimah (12089954) 18 April 2024 (has links)

American society’s increase in ethnic textures, interracial tension, immigrants, religion, gender, disability, ability, and students who speak languages other than English as their first language prolongs the pedagogical challenges teachers encounter in the classroom due to diversity. This study explored the experiences of secondary social studies teachers as curricular-instructional gatekeepers implementing culturally responsive pedagogy in times of socio-political tensions in the United States. The teacher as curricular-instructional gatekeeper framework guided this research. By adopting a qualitative multiple-case study, I utilized interviews with four teachers, two hundred hours of classroom observation, and document analysis as data sources. The findings revealed that the social studies gatekeepers’ culturally responsive practices amidst the present socio-political tensions included exposing diverse perspectives to diverse students, leveraging culturally diverse learners’ lived experiences, diversifying instructional methodologies for diverse learners, and confronting stereotypes in a culturally diverse classroom. Moreover, I discovered that present happenings influence culturally responsive practices by presenting difficulty in exposing specific topics to diverse learners, limiting classroom participation for responsive teaching, increasing workload in planning responsive lessons, and becoming a better teacher in a culturally diverse classroom. I recommend that further research should be conducted to explore the role of teacher education programs in preparing pre-service or in-service teachers to implement culturally responsive practices, how the multiple identities of in-service social studies teachers interplay to influence their implementation of culturally responsive practices, and how professional development training offered to in-service social studies teachers prepare them to implement culturally responsive practices amidst the growing legislation in the United States.

Women's Access to School Superintendency RolesSolomon, Dana 12 1900 (has links)
Men continue to outnumber women in public school superintendent roles by a 4:1 ratio. However, women outnumber men by a 4:1 ratio in teaching roles in public school districts. In addition, more women than men hold superintendent certificates and educational doctorates. Due to this puzzling discrepancy, it is important to understand possible factors in the form of gendered barriers to access that could lead to the unequal representation of women in superintendent positions. In this study, I examined how these barriers manifested in the experiences of female superintendents participating in the study, how they influenced the hiring experiences of these participants, and how they impacted these female leaders throughout their careers. With this study, I investigated barriers associated with holding mechanisms, gendered norms, and gendered filters that may limit women's access to superintendent roles. Women's experiences of the origins and effects of gender normative perceptions and hiring practices have potential for contributing to the study of gender equity in the field of education and beyond. Findings could provide implications for increasing women's opportunities to serve beyond central office positions in public school districts. Possibilities exist for identifying practices in organizations that have hired women to serve at the highest level of school district leadership; that of the superintendent of schools.

This study examines the business model of Meta called “Pay or OK”, a subscription modelthat offers users the choice to either consent to the use of Meta’s services and be subjected totargeted advertising or to use the service without personalized advertising for a fee. In the eraof digital transformation, where data has become a significant competitive advantage forlarge online platforms, the introduction of regulations like GDPR and DMA has beeninstrumental in protecting personal integrity and ensuring fair competition. This study utilizesqualitative and EU legal methods to analyze the “Pay or OK” business model from a legalperspective and also analyze if data could create competitive advantage for Meta, incorporating theories such as the resource-based view and the VRIO framework. The resultsof this study bring to the forefront the intriguing and contrasting opinions on the value ofpersonal data and the profound impact of regulations on the business landscape.

'n Literatuursosiologiese ondersoek na 'n groep Afrikaanse tagtigerprosaskrywersHeyns, Johan Dirk 06 1900 (has links)
'n aantal aktuele
aangeleenthede ondersoek. Ses onderskeidende kategoriee in die proefgroep se
tekste, naamlik politiek en betrokkenheid; realisme; grens- en geweldliteratuur;
interessante aspekte noodwendig agterwee moes bly.
dit verskyn het / This study attempts to make a contribution to the description of a recent period in
Afrikaans Prose History, namely the decade 1980-1989. The term writer of the Eighties
is defined and discussed. Nineteen writers have been identified as important Afrikaans
Eighties writers with the aid of five canonization mechanisms. These writers and their
51 prosa texts published between 1980-1989 are then investigated by means of
Vanheste's four identified attention areas in the sociology of literature, namely the
author, the literary work, the literary channel as well as the reader.
Questionnairs have been used to investigate the attitude of the trial group with regards
to a number of current affairs. Six distinguishing categories have been identified in the
texts of the trial group namely politics, realism, border and violence literature,
postmodernism, homo-erotics and popular prose.
The position of different gate-keepers in the literary channel, together with the influence
of censorship on the trial group, the role of the "Afrikaanse Skrywersgilde" and the "little
magazines", together with publication opportunities offered to these young writers, have
enjoyed attention. J.C.Kannemeyer as historian, together with the critics as readers of
the trial group's texts are investigated. The manipulation of a few social realities in
Alexander Strachan's 'n Wereld sander grense is investigated in terms of Vanheste's
communication model of literary sociology, combined with his (adapted) analysis model. The field of investigation of the sociology of literary covers such a wide field that
numerous interesting aspects had to be omitted. Reception studies during the decade
of the eighties were not possible and could, unfortunately, only be done five years after
the decade of the eighties.
The conclusion of this study is that, although not at quite the same level of significance
as the term "Sixties", one could still find similarities in the works of Afrikaans writers
from the Eighties decade. Cohesion between the social world and the texts of the
Vll
eighties have evolved from it, especially with regards to thematic and stilistic choices.
At the same time, the literary works of this decade have contributed to the social world
in which they were published / Afrikaans & Theory of Literature / D. Litt. et Phil. (Afrikaans)

Scots abroad, nationalism at home : Kailyard and Kilt as gatekeepers? 1885-1979Robson, Graham David January 2015 (has links)
The emigration of the Scots from the 18th to the 20th century has produced a diaspora. The thesis outlines how many diasporas are involved in the nationalist projects of their homeland. However, over the chronology of this study and beyond, whilst there were active movements to amend or end the Union of 1707, it has been found that the Scots were not. The thesis then proposes some explanations for this. Chapters one and two introduce methods, research material and context; they describe the Union, the emigrations and diasporas. The study uses for comparison purposes the Irish and Norwegian diasporas. Lines of enquiry such as nationalism, the use of soft power and gatekeeping behaviour are presented, with a discussion of Scottish nationalism. The study examines the approach to involving the diaspora of five groups; both SHRAs, the International Scots Home Rule League, the National Convention and the NPS/SNP. The response of Scottish MPs in the diaspora in England to the many attempts to legislate for home rule is also examined. The approach to the diaspora was found to be badly executed and targeted. Few visits were made, and only to the US and Canada. Communication was unfocussed and spasmodic. The Scottish associational clubs were frequently used as a conduit. A small part of the whole diaspora, these acted as gatekeepers, selectively mobilising for themselves as an elite which had no need of nationalism as they could succeed without it. Comparing the Irish, whose diaspora successfully supported its nationalist causes at home, is instructive. The study concludes that the spasmodic and amateurish nature of contact, the nature of the Associations and that of the diaspora itself were the main culprits in this case of a diaspora indifferent to the fate of nationalism in its home land.
