TITLE: About definition of the folk fairy-tale genre and about elaboration of the Snow-white theme in collections of chosen german authors (J. K. A. Musäus, A. L. Grimm and J. and W. Grimm) SUMMARY: This diploma thesis is concerned with the fairy-tale genre, which is defined as the folk fairy-tale, Snow-white theme and elaborations of this theme in collections of J. K. A. Musäus, A. L. Grimm and the Brothers Grimm. In context of the historico-literary period and in connection with the folk fairy-tale genre all processing are analysed and compared with each other. Märchen (1971) of Max Lüthi and Deutsche Märchen vor Grimm (1942) of Albert Wesselski are the fundamental publikations for this thesis. The main result is that the caption »Sneewittchen« of the Brothers Grimm correspondes closest to the folk fairy-tale genre, while »Richilde« of J. K. A. Musäus and »Schneewittchen« of A. L. Grimm as author's fairy-tale should be called. KEYWORDS: Fairy-tale genre, folk fairy-tale, collections of german authors, Snow-white theme, Johann Karl August Musäus, Albert Ludwig Grimm, Brothers Grimm

Representations of female sexuality in fairy tale illustrations and text, with specific reference to the Brothers Grimm's The handless maidenMeyer, Berry 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPhil (Visual Arts))--University of Stellenbosch, 2010. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This dissertation aims to investigate, from a feminist perspective, representations of female
sexuality in fairy tale text and illustrations. I conduct my analysis in the form of a case study
of the Brothers Grimm’s The Handless Maiden as it appeared in the 1915 English edition of
their Children and Household Tales. My investigation is prompted by the belief that fairy
tales play an important role in the social construction of gender relations, a process known as
‘interpellation’ within contemporary feminist discourse. This due to the fact that fairy tales
are some of the earliest narratives young children get exposed to and thus help shape their
understanding of the world around them and their role as social beings in it. I start my
investigation by looking exclusively at fairy tale text – The Handless Maiden by the Brothers
Grimm - and how language gets used to construct a specific version of female sexuality; that
which is silenced and without agency, thus repressive and problematic from a feminist
perspective. Here I firmly situate my argument within a theoretical framework provided by
contemporary feminist discourse with reference to the arguments of theorists Judith Butler
and Luce Irigaray and their emphasis on the key role of language within processes of
‘interpellation’. I then move on to a discussion of fairy tale illustrations and the important role
thereof to underscore, by making visible, the particular version of female sexuality implicit in
the accompanying text. The next part of my investigation focuses on images of women in the
photo-collages of the early 20th century German artist Hannah Höch. I posit these as
exemplary of imagery with the potential to destabilize patriarchal notions of female sexuality.
By means of this investigation I hope to provide a discursive framework in which to situate
my own set of illustrations of the Grimm’s Handless Maiden, which I completed as part of the
practical component of my submission for the current degree. The final part of my discussion
focuses on my own illustrations of the Grimm’s Handless Maiden and here I will argue for
my illustrations as a means to, not only destabilize notions of female sexuality implicit in the
accompanying fairy tale text, but also a means to suggest other, alternative, readings of the
nature of the female sexual subject position implicit in the text.
My ondersoek analiseer die Broers Grimm se The Handless Maiden soos
My
Vanuit ‘n feministiese oogpunt is
hierdie seksualiteit problematies, aangesien dit as swygend en sonder agentskap aanskou
word. Ek struktureer my ondersoek rondom die argumente van Judith Butler and Luce
Daarna skuif my
My ondersoek lei
Maiden, wat ek as ‘n deel van my praktiese komponenet voltooi het vir my huidige tesis. Die
finale deel van my tesis ondersoek my eie illustrasies van Grimm se Handless Maiden. Hier
seksualiteits onderwerp bied.

A Corpus Linguistics and Critical Discourse Analysis of Violance in the Grimm's Fairy Tales CollectionAlcantud Diaz, Maria 14 December 2011 (has links)
The main objective of the present thesis is to show the results achieved after investigating the presence of violence in the brothers Grimm’s fairy tales collection. After reviewing how the brothers Grimm’s fairy tales collection, a discourse aimed at adults, suffered a transformation and ended up being aimed at children, I explored whether the presence of violence in the brothers Grimm’s fairy tales collection could be empirically demonstrated by means of a Corpus Linguistics analysis. By doing this, I was able to show that classical readings aimed at children might be reclassified empirically and objectively after having analysed their content using a multidisciplinary approach. The framework for analysis is a combination of (i) corpus-based approaches (Biber et al 1998, Scott 2001 and Stubbs 1996, 2002); (ii) Systemic Functional Linguistics (transitivity analysis) (Berry 1977, 1989, Downing 1996:186, Downing and Locke 2006:120-167 and Halliday 1994: 106-175) and (iii) Critical Discourse Analysis (Van Dijk 1997, 2000, 2001, 2003, 2004, Widdicombe 1998 and Wodak & Meyer 2002-2009). The present study might provide a new insight into the violent content in the brothers Grimm’s fairy tales collection, as well as into the possible effects that these may have on children.
In order to carry out a study of violence I have first paid attention to the type of verbal processes that appear in the corpus in order to find out who is inflicting violence upon who and then, I have studied the transitivity shifts, that is, verbal processes, and the participants and circumstances that are part of the corpus selected for the analysis, The Grimm Corpus. By doing this, it was my intention to find out whether power and violence were intrinsically related in them.
In sum, my main objective was to find out the relationship between verbal processes and socially-constructed meaning related to power in these tales. By doing this, I intended to shed some light on the power relations that may help feature the characters in these tales and the consequences these power relations might have on the potential addressees.
In order to carry out this research, I have divided the current article into five sections: firstly, I have reviewed how the literature aimed at children appeared during the 17th and 18th, centuries as a kind of game for adults in the midst of an aristocratic society where there was no demand for children’s books. The tales, then, became nursery tales by the 19th century; mainly due to an increasing market demand for children’s literature but their violent content remained as this study will demonstrate. In the last part of this stage, we will shed some light on the violent content of the brothers Grimm’s fairy tales collection.
Section two introduces the concept violence and its different types. Sections three and four, presents a theoretical background dealing with the notions related to Corpus Linguistics (CL), Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) and Systemic Functional Linguistcs (SFL). Additionally, I present a brief explanation of how the combination of these approaches, have, in my opinion, contributed to clarify the relationship between social identity and the power that features the characters in the tales.
The fifth part provides a concise explanation about the hypotheses and research methodology. The sixth part of my study is devoted to showing the detailed analyses and results achieved in the present thesis.
Finally, chapter 7 depicts the concluding remarks and some pointers for further research. The results confirmed the initial hypothesis and provided some useful and interesting insights into the different kinds of identities related to violence found in fairy tales which come from oral tradition.

Housing projekt Pattaya ThailandLindberg, Karin, Nordlander, Anna January 2006 (has links)
This report will examine the problems and possibilities of building a luxurious modern residence in Pattaya, Thailand, incorporating the old traditional building styles of the wooden houses to an ecological house with a low demand for technology. The client, B. Grimm Group, has recently set up a polo club in the vicinity of Pattaya and has requested a complete set of layouts regarding a planned housing area on the premises. The project includes a structure plan of the village area, perspectives, facades, building layouts and axonometric views of all house types, as well as garden plans. The written report works as a complement to the designs and explains the background to the final proposal. The report also handles the building technology and construction process of building a traditional Thai house and briefly investigates the ecological aspects of building in Thailand.

Black-winged angels : theoretical underpinningsSlatter, Angela Gaye January 2006 (has links)
The creative work, Black-Winged Angels, is a collection of nine re-written fairytales. The collection is divided into three sections: Maiden, Mother, Crone and the three stories in each section explore various aspects of these traditional periods in a woman's life. The tales are re-written, or 're-loaded', to offer alternative views of the tales of childhood, to examine other forces that may be at work inside the stories themselves, and the possible consequences of 'living' those tales differently. The exegesis examines the colonisation and reclamation of a range of fairy tales. It traces the historical shift from oral to literary fairy tale traditions, and the ensuing patriarchal rewriting of those fairytales. The exegesis then considers the writing of Angela Carter and Emma Donoghue (specifically The Bloody Chamber and Kissing the Witch, respectively), in terms of how their work in the fairytale genre has both succeeded in, and failed to, avoid a simple inversion of gender with their revisions of the colonised literary fairytales. The exegetical work has grown, in large part, out of the process of critical reflexivity to which I have subjected my creative work. I chose Angela Carter's and Emma Donoghue's works of revisionist fairytales to act as 'bookends' for my own work; Carter as a starting point for fairytale reclamation and Donoghue as a more recent incarnation of the fairytale revisionist. In reflecting on my own work, I often looked back at what these two authors had done, to guide me in the eternal writers' struggle of what to leave in, what to leave out, and where to take the tale.

Sleeping Beauty and Her Many RelativesKemptner, Dorothy Jeanine 23 July 2009 (has links)
The Grimm Brothers’ Little Briar-Rose is a beloved fairytale, which is more commonly known as Sleeping Beauty. What began as a Volksmärchen, is now a world famous and beloved Kunstmärchen. The Brothers collected and adapted the tale, incorporating their own literary style, helping to develop a literary Germanic cultural history. In this thesis I analyze how the tale evolves from the original oral tale to the literary story, and how various perspectives of culture and authors, with particular audiences in mind, adapt their versions. Historical background of the Grimms and their influences, an analysis of how the story was revised by the Grimms in the 1812 and 1857 editions, how American children’s versions compare to the Grimms’ version and how Jane Yolen’s version of Sleeping Beauty meets the structural and cultural expectations of the Grimms’ tale are examined.
