A presente pesquisa visa investigar as relações entre história e literatura a partir do romance histórico A ferro e fogo, de Josué Guimarães, e a obra A colonização alemã e o Rio Grande do Sul, de Jean Roche. Para isso, analisa a forma como a narrativa do historiador serve de fonte de pesquisa para o romancista. Em arquivos localizados no Acervo Literário Josué Guimarães, investiga as anotações feitas pelo escritor da ficção em um exemplar da obra do historiador para interpretar o processo de criação literária e a ressignificação dos eventos históricos. For this, it analyzes the manner the historical narrative is used as a research source to the novelist. In the archives located at Acervo Literário Josué Guimarães, it investigates the notes left by the fiction author in one copy of the historian work to understand the literary creation process and the reinterpretation of historical events. In that way, it aspires to point out the historicity resonances in the romance.

A proposta desta pesquisa é oferecer uma análise a respeito da trajetória política e intelectual de Josué Guimarães (São Jerônimo, 07 de janeiro de 1921 – Porto Alegre, 23 de março de 1986), centralizada no período que vai desde a década de 1940 até da década de 1980, momento que corresponde a sua inserção definitiva no universo literário ficcional. A dissertação baseia-se nos conceitos de campo, intelectual, trajetória e representação: o conceito de campo, proposto por Pierre Bourdieu, auxiliou na compreensão da rede de relações de Guimarães; a noção de intelectual, segundo as considerações de Gérard Leclerc, fundamentou a forma de ver as suas ações; o conceito de trajetória, também de Bourdieu, permitiu ver tais ações fora de uma teleologia; o conceito representação, de Roger Chartier, auxiliou na leitura da obra Os tambores silenciosos. Ao entrecruzar o intelectual, a trajetória político-intelectual, seus contatos no campo e o romance, encontrei caminhos para entender e interpretar a postura crítica de Josué Guimarães frente à sociedade. A pesquisa pretende contribuir, a partir da análise da trajetória de um único sujeito, para uma melhor compreensão da dinâmica do campo intelectual gaúcho. / The purpose of this research is to provide an analysis about the political and intellectual trajectory of Josué Guimarães (São Jerônimo, January 7th, 1921 – Porto Alegre, March 23rd, 1986), centered on the period from the 1940s to mid-1980s, a period of time that corresponds to his definitive insertion into the fictional literary universe. The dissertation is based on the concepts of field, intellectual, trajectory, and representation: the concept of field, proposed by Pierre Bourdieu, helped into the comprehension of Guimarães’ web of social relationships; the notion of intellectual, according to the considerations by Gérard Leclerc, determined the way of seeing his actions; the concept of trajectory, also by Pierre Bourdieu, allowed seeing these actions out of a teleology; the concept of representation, by Roger Chartier, helped in the reading of the book Os tambores silenciosos. By interlacing the intellectual, the intellectual and political trajectory, his contacts inside the field and the romance, I have found ways to understand and interpret the critical posture of Josué Guimarães in relation to the society. The research aims to contribute, from the analysis of a single subject’s trajectory, to a better comprehension of the dynamic of the gaucho intellectual field.

Analisa cinco romances que tratam do tema: A divina pastora, de Caldre e Fião (1847), Frida Meyer, de Vivaldo Coaracy (1924), Um rio imita o Reno, de Clodomir Vianna Moog (1939), O tempo e o vento (sete volumes/trilogia), de Erico Verissimo (1949-1962), e A ferro e fogo (dois volumes), de Josué Guimarães (1972 - 1975). A análise das obras foi orientada pelas categorias Família, Trabalho, Religião, Espaço e deslocamento e Contatos. Para cada uma das categorias é feito um levantamento minucioso das informações correspondentes encontradas nas narrativas. Por meio desse processo investigativo são explicitadas as visões sobre a imigração alemã construídas por escritores diferentes em épocas diferentes, formulando-se compreensões sobre assimilação e preservação da identidade étnica e participação dos imigrantes na formação do estado do Rio Grande do Sul. / This is a study of the portrayal of German immigrants in romance written in Rio Grande do Sul. An analysis of five literary works addressing the theme is provided. The works are A divina pastora, by Caldre e Fião (1847), Frida Meyer, by Vivaldo Coaracy (1924), Um rio imita o Reno, by Clodomir Vianna Moog (1939), O tempo e o vento (seven volumes/trilogy), by Erico Verissimo (1949-1962), and A ferro e fogo (two volumes), by Josué Guimarães (1972-1975). The analysis was directed by the following categories: Family, Work, Religion, Space and dislocations and Contacts. A thorough assessment of the corresponding information found in the narratives was made for each category. The views on German immigration as constructed by different writers at different times are made explicit through such investigative process, which has raised understanding about the assimilation and preservation of ethnical identity and the participation of immigrants in the formation of the state of Rio Grande do Sul.
