In Brazil a serious problem closely linked to violence is the use of firearms . In the state of Goiás the death rate resulting from its use is troubling figuring therefore as a severe public health problem. To describe the sociodemographic profile of people with gunshot wounds treated at a big Emergency Hospital localized in Goiânia-Goiás-Brazil . Descriptive observational study with non-probability sample of convenience. Participants were inpatients in a big Emergency Hospital, with gunshot wounds in the period from January to March of 2013. Project approved by the Ethics Committee in Research of Emergency Hospital of Goiânia, 182123/2013. The study included 150 patients who suffered injuries from firearms lodged in a large hospital of Goiás It can be seen that the higher prevalence of injuries occurred in the victims were male (94.7 %), young people (67,3 %), nonwhite (72,0 %) and with incomes of up to two minimum wages (51,3 %). They are mostly people who are self-employed or salaried construction (62,3 %), with schooling up to 9 years (elementary school), and 120 of them (80,0%) were users of alcohol or drugs. This study identified that a large number of victims of gunshot wounds admitted for treatment are: young men, users of drugs or alcohol and the motivation for such injury has relation to drug traffic and debts. An approach from violence from the perspective of public health becomes important to analyze and identify data on its distribution and its social determinants.

However, there are cases where neither the bullet nor gun is found at the crime scene. Ballistic research involving finite element models can reproduce computational biomechanical conditions, without compromising bioethics, as they involve no direct tests on animals or humans. This study aims to compare the morphologies of gunshot entrance holes caused by .40-caliber Smith & Wesson (S&W), .380-caliber, and 9x19-mm Luger bullets. A fully metal-jacketed .40 S&W projectile, a fully metal-jacketed .380 projectile, and a fully metal-jacketed 9x19-mm Luger projectile were computationally fired at the glabellar region of the finite element model from a distance of 10 cm, at perpendicular incidence. The results show different morphologies in the entrance holes produced by the three bullets, using the same skull at the same shot distance. The results and traits of the entrance holes are discussed. Finite element models allow feasible computational ballistic research, which may be useful to forensic experts when comparing and analyzing data related to gunshot wounds in the forehead / Mestrado / Odontologia Legal e Deontologia / Mestre em Biologia Buco-Dental

Method Development for the Analysis of Smokeless Powders and Organic Gunshot Residue by Ultra Performance Liquid Chromatography with Tandem Mass Spectrometry

Thomas, Jennifer L. 12 November 2013 (has links)
The goal of this project was to develop a rapid separation and detection method for analyzing organic compounds in smokeless powders and then test its applicability on gunshot residue (GSR) samples. In this project, a total of 20 common smokeless powder additives and their decomposition products were separated by ultra performance liquid chromatography (UPLC) and confirmed by tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) using multiple reaction monitoring mode (MRM). Some of the targeted compounds included diphenylamines, centralites, nitrotoluenes, nitroglycerin, and various phthalates. The compounds were ionized in the MS source using simultaneous positive and negative electrospray ionization (ESI) with negative atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI) in order to detect all compounds in a single analysis. The developed UPLC/MS/MS method was applied to commercially available smokeless powders and gunshot residue samples recovered from the hands of shooters, spent cartridges, and smokeless powder retrieved from unfired cartridges. Distinct compositions were identified for smokeless powders from different manufacturers and from separate manufacturing lots. The procedure also produced specific chemical profiles when tested on gunshot residues from different manufacturers. Overall, this thesis represents the development of a rapid and reproducible procedure capable of simultaneously detecting the widest possible range of components present in organic gunshot residue.

Benefity CT vyšetření v soudním lékařství / The Benefits of the Computed Tomography in the Forensic Medicine

Pohlová Kučerová, Štěpánka January 2021 (has links)
The benefits of the computed tomography in the forensic medicine Radiological imaging methods represent one of the complementary examination methods supplementing conventional autopsy in addition to histological, toxicological, biochemical, microbiological, and serological examination in forensic medicine. The basic and commonly available radiological imaging method in forensic practice is X-ray imaging. With the development of modern radiological imaging methods (especially computed tomography and nuclear magnetic resonance), these modern methods have been gradually applied to the field of forensic medicine. The rapid development of radiological imaging methods in recent years (especially computed tomography and nuclear magnetic resonance) has caused the gradual application of these modern methods in the field of forensic medicine. Post mortem CT (pmCT) examination is now a common part of forensic medicine in the most developed world countries (Switzerland, Denmark, Australia, Japan, Germany, Italy, France and others) and since 2015 this examination has been available at two departments of forensic medicine in the Czech Republic. The primary aim of the study was to evaluate the benefits of pmCT examination in routine forensic practice in three comprehensive groups of individuals who died as a result of...

Gunshot Detection and Direction of Arrival Estimation Using Machine Learning and Received Signal Power

Grahn, David, Cooper, Timothy January 2023 (has links)
Poaching is a persistent issue that threatens many of earth’s species including therhino. The methods used by poachers are varied, but many use guns to carry outtheir illegal activities. Gunfire is extremely loud and can be heard for kilometres. This thesis investigates whether it is possible to aid anti-poaching efforts in Kenyawith a gunshot detection and estimation device using an array of microphones. Ifsuccessful, the device could be placed around the savannah or any exposed areaand warn if poaching is taking place in the nearby. If a shot is fired within theaudible range of the device’s microphones, a trained machine learning algorithmdetects the shot on the edge using a microprocessor. The detection runs in realtime and achieved an accuracy of 93% on an unbalanced data set, where themajority class was the one without gunshots. Once a detection has been made, thereceived signal power to each microphone is used to produce a direction of arrivalestimate. The estimate can produce an angle estimate with a standard deviationof 66.78° for a gunshot, and with a standard deviation of 7.65° when testing themodel with white noise. Future implementations could use several devices thatdetected the same event, and fuse their estimates to locate the shooter’s position. All of this information, as well as the sound file, can be used to alert and assistlocal wildlife services. The challenges of this project have been centred aroundmaking a system run in real time with only a microprocessor on the edge, whilealso prioritizing low cost components for future deployment. / Project Ngulia

Développement et évaluation d’une méthode LC-MS/MS pour l’analyse de résidus de tir en criminalistique/Development and assessment of a LC-MS/MS method for the analysis of gunshot residues in criminalistics

Laza, Désiré 16 February 2007 (has links)

This thesis deals with a research project entitled "Development of an integral system of detection and identification of gunshot residues”, carried out at the Belgian National Institute of Criminalistics and Criminology (NICC). This project aims at providing the Laboratory of Chemical Ballistics, a powerful tool to detect and identify organic gunshot residues. For instance, the analyses of gunshot residues is presently performed mainly for characterizing metallic particles originating from the primer, using scanning electron microscopy coupled to energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis (SEM-EDX). However this technique has its limits and the goal of the thesis was the development of a method for the analysis of the stabilizers (and their derivatives) present in propellant powders with the use of tandem mass spectrometry coupled to high performance liquid chromatography (LC-MS/MS). The introduction highlights the relations between Criminology and Criminalistics; it gives an outline of the classification of weapons, and describes how handguns, ammunitions, gunshot residues and Criminalistics can be linked when investigating criminal cases. The motivation of the analysis of organic gunshot residues and in particular the propellant powder stabilizers is also explained. Chapter 1 deals in detail with the working principle of a quadrupole mass spectrometer, whether it is with a single quadrupole or composed of a tandem mass spectrometer. Important aspects connected with the ion production, the data acquisition and the ion detection are also considered. Chapter 2 presents the results and discussions. It begins with the optimization of the operating conditions of the spectrometer, and focuses more specifically on the determination of “precursor ions" and "daughter ions”. The study of the precursor ion is more important because it is required for the choice of parameters involved in the data acquisition mode. The development of a liquid chromatography (LC) method and the procedures for collecting and preparing the samples are explained. Moreover, Chapter 2 summarizes the results of a feasibility study of the analyses of stabilizers in samples collected from the hands of a shooter. This study was published in a peer reviewed journal [1]. A complementary study on the frequencies of observation of stabilizers on the hands of non-shooter persons is reported at the end the Chapter. The results allow also proposing perspectives which are described in Chapter 3. In this respect, the characterization of nitrocellulose residues and the study of the persistence of stabilizer residues on the hands of shooters should be undertaken. From the practical point of view, the developed methods and procedures should be tested in real cases which involve the analyses of the samples taken from the clothing of suspects and/or victims. These tests should allow an assessment of the LC-MS/MS method compared to the efficiency of the SEM/EDX technique currently used. Chapter 4 is dedicated to the materials and methods; the sample collection and treatment procedures, as well as the working parameters of the mass spectrometer and the analytical methods are explained in detail. Active Shooter Mitigation for Open-Air Venues

Braiden M Frantz (8072417) 04 August 2021 (has links)

This dissertation examines the impact of active shooters upon patrons attending large outdoor events. There has been a spike in shooters targeting densely populated spaces in recent years, to include open-air venues. The 2019 Gilroy Garlic Festival was selected for modeling replication using AnyLogic software to test various experiments designed to reduce casualties in the event of an active shooter situation. Through achievement of validation to produce identical outcomes of the real-world Gilroy Garlic Festival shooting, the researcher established a reliable foundational model for experimental purposes. This active shooter research project identifies the need for rapid response efforts to neutralize the shooter(s) as quickly as possible to minimize casualties. Key findings include the importance of armed officers patrolling event grounds to reduce response time, the need for adequate exits during emergency evacuations, incorporation of modern technology to identify the shooter’s location, and applicability of a 1:548 police to patron ratio.
