Real vs. imaginary users: measuring the impact of home movie collections on historical scholarship

Treat, Laura Jean 23 September 2014 (has links)
In the past thirty years, a growing community has emerged to advocate for the preservation and recognition of home movie collections based on their historical significance. Despite the significant cost of preserving and providing access to these collections and the myriad challenges they pose to archivists and researchers, no substantive research exists that evaluates their actual scholarly use or impact. Through a publication analysis and a survey of the Association of Moving Image Archivists, I sought to determine if there is a difference between whom archivists think should be using home movie collections and who is actually them. Though my findings suggest that home movies have yet to impact the scholarly work of historians, I offer recommendations for future research and professional development that may encourage increased scholarly use as well as increased collaboration between archivists and historians. / text

Mary Wingfield Scott: A Rebel with a Rubble Cause

Peninger, Kay 07 December 2011 (has links)
Mary Wingfield Scott (1895-1983) was a leading figure in the historic preservation movement in Richmond, Virginia. Scott demonstrated a preservation philosophy that transitioned from the sentimental, patriotic focus of early preservation efforts to a modern, academic approach that valued the built environment for its relationship to the city and its history. Scott educated persons on the value of preserving houses that were architecturally significant or connected to the city’s heritage. She documented the antebellum housing of Richmond in two books, founded the William Byrd Branch of the APVA, conducted walking tours throughout the city, wrote a newsletter for the William Byrd Branch, and purchased houses to prevent their demolition. Scott was a strong advocate of adaptive reuse, which she applied to the Greek Revival houses known as Linden Row. Scott’s approach to preservation is mirrored in the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) enacted in 1966 and Richmond’s 2009 Downtown Plan.

No. of bitstreams: 1 JEFFERSON CARVALHO MATEUS.pdf: 1205817 bytes, checksum: e2a01eaa9479b77433af3af3b0d9fa29 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2013-06-28 / The study that is embodied in this dissertation is placed in a historical research that seeks to analyze the importance of Glauber Rocha for Brazilian cinema, not being seen only as a filmmaker but also as an important "historian", since their productions allow to know the roots and characteristics of Brazilian cinema, in particular the new cinema. To do so, we start from the understanding of how the film was characterized during the dictatorship, the struggle for resources and lack of incentive on the same, all that characterized the productions, but also gave rise to several important authors to national culture. For the construction of this dissertation has been used as a methodological resource, discussions and analyzes literature, with authors such as backing Napolitano (2004), Faust (2002), Rock (2003), among others, which made it possible to know the history of Brazil and relates it film history, aspects related to Glauber Rocha, both as a filmmaker, critic and as "historian". After completion of this study, it was revealed that the author is a milestone for the Brazilian cinema, mainly because it sought to know their characteristics, authors and transformations, acting critically, often acting as a "historian" to highlight facts issues and subjects within the history of cinema, seeking value the characteristics of the country and all that the film could offer.

Heinemann, Michael 19 December 2009 (has links) (PDF)
