Renate Gierus 15 August 2006 (has links)
This research intends to delineate the profiles of German immigrant women, who came to the south of Brazil in the second half of the nineteenth century. This delineation is based on three newspapers and on letters written by these women. Intertwined to this, the research wants to cast a critical look on a view of women that exists in the common sense, considering her limited to her sacred mission of wife-housewife-mother. The feminist theory and the notion of gender used in this context, found the critique on the outlined profiles. Ruptures and gaps arise as well as moments of re-signification of daily experiences, so often predefined. To structure this work so that it breaks up with dualisms and to propose the theoretical-methodological question of a feminist historiography as the key-question of this thesis concludes temporarily and with a plural proposition the reflection around this theme.

História, arqueologia e a cronologia do Êxodo : historiografia e problematizações / História, arqueologia e a cronologia do Êxodo : historiografia e problematizações

Josué Berlesi 13 November 2007 (has links)
Recent academic researches brought doubts to certain parts of the History of ancient Israel. And also, there isnt an agreement about the History of Hebrew people. Thus, this research is taking into consideration a significant part of the historiography of an important event of their history: the exodus. The first part of this research concerns about how this event was interpreted in theological environments. Aiming for that, books from maximalists researchers, notably conservatives, and books from the historical critical method followers are used. The second part investigates how the exodus was interpreted outside the theological environment, emphasizing mainly historians and archaeologists books. In both parts its considered aspects like the previous events of the exodus, its evidences and its route. The last part, however, concerns specifically about the exodus cronology emphasizing the main dates proposed for this event. Althoug, above that, its recognizable the effort to detect the historical possibility of the exodus. And also, the effort to explain how did the exodus assume such great importance in the ancient israelite tradition.

Towards a Disruptive Theory of the Affectual: Queer Hemispheric Theories of Affect and Corporeality in the Americas

January 2014 (has links)
abstract: At the heart of this dissertation is a push for critical genealogy that intervenes into two major theoretical bodies of work in rhetoric and composition -- affect studies and queer latina rhetorics. Chapter one intervenes into emerging discourses on publics and affect studies from seamlessly recovering "the body" as an always-already Western body of rhetoric in the advent of this renewed interest in emotion, embodiment, and structures of affect as rhetorical concepts showing the long history of theorizing by queer mestizas. Chapter two focuses on one register of affect: anger, which articulated from the works of writers such as Maria Lugones and Gloria Anzaldúa offers a complex theory of agency for the subaltern subject. Chapter three links emotions like anger and melancholia to the corporeal rhetorics of skin and face, metaphors that are abundant in the queer mestiza and chicana writers under discussion, revealing the dramatic inner-workings of a the queer mestiza subject and the inter-subjective dynamics between the racialized and gendered performance of that body. By re-rooting affect in the queer colonized, yet resistant body, the link between the writing subject and colonial violence is made clear. Chapter four looks at the autoethnographic process of creating an affective archive in the form of queer racial melancholia, while Chapter five concludes by taking writing programs to task for their view of the writing archive, offering a radical new historiography by means of a queer chicana methodology. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation English 2014

The reception and use of Flann Mainistrech and his work in medieval Gaelic manuscript culture

Thanisch, Eystein Patrick January 2016 (has links)
Flann Mainistrech (active c. 1014 to 1056) is well-attested in medieval and post-medieval Gaelic manuscripts and in early printed works on Irish history as an authority on history and literary tradition. He appears to have been an ecclesiastical scholar, based at Monasterboice (modern Co. Louth, Ireland), but potentially operating within wider ecclesiastical and political networks. Almost fifty texts or fragments of texts, mostly poems, are at some point attributed to him. Their subject-matter includes the regnal history of early medieval Irish kingdoms, legendary material on Ireland and the Gaels’ more distant past, universal and classical history, hagiography, and genealogical traditions. In addition, various sources are extant that concern Flann Mainistrech as a character. Most imply that he was considered a pre-eminent authority; some go further and provide impressionistic sketches of his scholarship and locating him in certain social or political settings. The secondary literature on medieval Gaelic authors like Flann has been largely concerned with establishing what can be securely stated about their historical biographies and with delineating reliable corpora of their works. In addition, there has been much discussion around whether medieval Gaelic literature is to be fundamentally characterised as secular or ecclesiastical. Recently, however, studies have begun to focus less on the literal realities of medieval authorship and more on how authorship was conceived in the Middle Ages, how it functioned as a form of authority, and how it might have been used or constructed within texts’ or manuscripts’ overall argumentation. In response, in this thesis, I survey manuscript materials and early printed works relating to Flann Mainistrech and discuss how his status as an author-figure relates to his identity as an individual, considering how he was interpreted in different contexts, the extent to which later scribes or compilers used or manipulated his identity, and what made him useful or applicable to them. After analysing the textual material in light of these issues, I conclude that Flann was consistently placed in certain definable historiographical and biographical contexts and that his authority may thus have been tied to this specific characterisation. However, presentations of Flann can vary quite dramatically in emphasis, while close examination of material attributed to him and their contexts within compilations and manuscripts reveals appropriation of his perspective, pseudonymous use of his identity, and re-contextualisation of his purported work according to later compilers’ interests and priorities. Relatively consistent treatment of his persona is thus ostensibly juxtaposed with dynamic, creative reading practices. Yet such conclusions are overshadowed by evidence, also considered in this study, suggesting that what survives of the manuscript tradition may well fall short of being representative both of Flann’s actual biography and of his textual persona. As well as offering a case study into medieval Gaelic concepts of authorship, authority, and textuality, this thesis also necessarily presents more basic analyses of previously under-explored and, in a few cases, unedited texts that come to be of relevance. Several such texts are printed and translated in Appendices.

This essay seeks the historiographer collecting about the self-reflexive academic production of anthropology in Brazil, emphasizing the '80s and '90s of 20ths, starting from the presupposition that the mentioned texts renew the discipline field's legitimation in our specific reality. The anthropological knowledge in Brazil has about a hundred years of tradition, if we take Nina Rodrigues' publication as a starting point, and not so far, if we starting from the institutionalization of the discipline in 1934 with the creation of the University of São Paulo and the Graduation Course of Social Science. However, the researches got strengths and thematically diversified from 1970 with the creation and reformulation of graduate programs in social anthropology, portraying the internal controversies in this area, and in the following decades the problematical of thinking by itself changes in an effective and singular way, due to Brazilian anthropologists' interest in contributing meaningfully to the enrichment of their field activity.

The structure of the novel The Mermaid's Other Foot (2006), by Mozambican writer Mia Couto, reveals a proposal for revisiting the distant or recent past. This is achieved through a symbiotic writing in which poetry and criticism harmonically set the tone of the dialogue established by fiction with events that marked the history of Mozambique. In this redesigning way, the fiction writer adopts as a writing procedure the insertion of elements which have extra-textual significance in the composition of plot. Based on this expository frame, in this study we investigate how the hypertextual relationship between the novel and Luiz de Froes´s 1562 historiographical text is established. Based on the assumption that the narrative The Mermaid´s Other Foot is constituted on the principles the hyper-textuality, our thesis focuses on the connections between the structural construction of the work and the present action scheme in the historiographical text. Our investigative route is developed with the analysis of the resources mobilized for the time, space and characters setting which shape the novel. The concept of hyper-textuality, structured by Gerard Genette as palimpsest object will be used as theoretical basis to support the process of textual derivation which is established between the texts.

During the period of First Brazilian Republic, the state of São Paulo became the main economy of the country leading to the production of a narrative that justified that position of political and economic domain on the nation. From the observations we inquired, can we assume that there was the formation of a region named São Paulo in the early twentieth century? This question emerges from the concern with the relation between the formation of a regional identity and the definition of this space, the state. / The Brazilian historiography of the 1980s was marked by the intensification of new theoretical and methodological references, at the same time as the research was catalyzed by the university reform process that consolidated the postgraduate programs in Brazil. In this movement, one of the appropriations that caught the attention of the academic community was the microhistory. This historiographical practice descends from the paths involved between the Italian historians, participating in the journal Quaderni Storici who established dialogues between social history and anthropology in the 1970s and 1980s. In parallel, it can also be noticed in the development of Brazilian social history itself, especially in the studies on the Colonial Period that opened for new theoretical contributions. With these questions in mind, this dissertation seeks to investigate the appropriations of microhistory in Brazilian historiography in the 1980s and 1990s, through three distinct moments, to construct a theoretical framework of it, to traverse the trajectory of Brazilian historiography in the 1980s, and finally, to analyze two works that can be classified in this theoretical perspective, Um herege vai ao paraíso – cosmologia de um ex-colono condenado pela Inquisição (1680-1744) and Dom Obá II d’África, o príncipe do povo – vida, tempo e pensamento de um homem livre de cor, defended in the early 1990s and published in 1997.
