He's only human" : A study of how the press describes the public and private role of the monarch when the "scandal biography" is published 2010

Palm, Kristina January 2011 (has links)
The aim of this paper is to examine how the press describes the public and private role of the Swedish monarch in texts that report about the biography Carl XVI Gustaf – den motvillige monarken (Sjöberg et al. 2010) when it is published in November 2010. The examined period ranges between the days just before the release and a fortnight after. The analysis is limited to standard Swedish papers: a daily, Svenska Dagbladet, and an evening paper, Expressen. Questions asked in the study are: In what ways do the analysed texts raise a discussion about the monarchy’s importance or function in the society of today, that is a public debate on the monarchy? To what extension are status symbols used in the constructing of royalty, that is what Jürgen Habermas (2003) describes as representative publicity? What similarities and differences are found when comparing the news articles in the daily and in the evening paper? The method used to answer the aim and questions is the critical discourse analysis, as Norman Fairclough (1995) describes it, and the theoretical perspective of the essay is Jürgen Habermas’ (2003) theory about the bourgeois public sphere. The result shows that the news articles in the daily unsurprisingly construct only a public who wants to debate on the monarchy. The evening paper instead addresses its readers both as cultural consumers, which the study sees as representative publicity, and as civilians who want to discuss the monarchy’s importance or function of today’s society. Important to notice is that when the evening paper is challenging the monarchy it’s always made in an implicit manner. The public role of the monarch is in both the daily and the evening paper said to be powerful and his public role is said to influence his private role in different ways. It is also obvious that the focus in Expressen is upon the most intimate sphere of the privacy of the monarch. The description of the private room is important here, in addition the spatial portraying uses status symbols when constructing royalty. Finally, the analysis shows that the monarch simultaneously portrays both as an ordinary human being and as a very special person in exclusive surroundings. Earlier research has proved that Swedish media wants to describe royalty like this.

Den europeiska offentliga sfären : En kritisk litteraturstudie

Weissenbilder, Marcus, Müntzing, Fredrik January 2014 (has links)
The public sphere is a term which historically has been defined in various ways. This has caused the literature on the European public sphere (EPS) to take on many different viewpoints. As shown by previous studies, the literature on this subject has several flaws as well in its operationalization’s as in its conceptualization’s. This bachelor’s thesis sets out to, through a literature review, explore the different conceptualizations of the EPS as well as review whether the field of research has improved in the various areas.   Our findings conclude that many methodological and conceptual issues remain in EPS research and there also seems to be a general lack of discussion and critique against the research’s own approaches. We would also argue that the Habermasian perspective, as well as research with a focus on mass media and an empirical perspective, is too dominant.

The Triangle Of Publicness, Communication And Democracy In Habermas

Turan, Omer 01 September 2004 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis develops the Triangle Model, to offer a general framework through which the work of J&uuml / rgen Habermas could be better understood and assessed. Accordingly, it is argued that, it is possible to derive a triangle in Habermas&rsquo / s thought, formed by the concerns of publicness, communication, and democracy. Each corner of the triangle corresponds to a major concern and focus of Habermas&rsquo / s project chronologically. The Triangle Model provides an overview of continuities and discontinuities in Habermas&rsquo / s work. The main discontinuity found is between the first and the second corners of the triangle, namely between publicness and communication. It is argued that this rapture stems from an interpretive turn, composed of three points: the influence of Hegelian philosophy of human interaction, the concomitant criticism of Kantian foundationalism, and the incorporation of Arendt&rsquo / s communicative concept of power. This study also emphasises that there are points indicating continuity, or unity in Habermas&rsquo / s thought. First, an intersubjective theory of truth is employed in all three concerns or corners of the triangle. Second, in all these concerns, Habermas searches for an answer to the same question: &ldquo / how to produce legitimate norms&rdquo / . The principle of publicity and the authority of the better argument voiced in the first corner of the triangle -publicness-, the discourse ethics of the second corner, and the deliberative politics of the third corner are formulated and adapted by Habermas in order to find the ways of producing legitimate norms. In this context, it is argued that the deliberative politics is based on publicness and communication / or publicness and communication are indispensable for deliberative politics.

Within this work we intend to investigate how the new information and communication technologies, as the Moodle and others web 2.0 resources, can contribute to the enhancement of the communicative action of a group of science teachers in process of pre-service and permanent education, taking part in a research group. For this purpose we adopt the Communicative Action Theory of Jürgen Habermas as the main theoretical and methodological framework, associated with the critical action research method e multiple case studies method. The data obtained through questionnaire, observation, audio recording, and interactions among people in the virtual environment suggest that, as face to face interactions, virtual communication mediated by computers equally submitted to systemic imperatives that limit the teacher's autonomy and action. That fact arose the importance of searching elements to fight this situation through the instauration of a process of institutionalization of the communicative rationality and the establishment of autonomous research groups in the scholar environment

Alarcón Ferrari, Cristián January 2005 (has links)

Blogging, journalism and the public sphere: assessing the value of the 'blogosphere' as a new form of the public sphere : a case study of the Mail & Guardian Online's Blogmark

Sibanda, Fortune January 2006 (has links)
The study seeks to investigate whether weblogs can act as virtual public spheres, where people can meet to discuss issues of interest to them. It uses the Mail & Guardian Online’s Blogmark as a case study. Weblogs – highly interactive online journals comprised of links and postings in reverse chronological order – are fast becoming an avenue of choice for many internet users wanting to share opinions and news with others online. Because of their unique read-and-write characteristics, some have equated them to the 18th century coffeehouses, around which the early forms of citizen involvement in public affairs began in early capitalist Europe. Despite their growing popularity, however, not much scholarly work has been dedicated to the practice of blogging in Africa, and particularly in South Africa. The study’s theoretical framework is drawn from Jürgen Habermas’s concept of the public sphere. While noting some of the criticisms of the Habermasian model, it is argued that the concept is instrumental in our understanding of the relationship between the media and democracy. The study, however, adopted a re-worked model of the concept of the public sphere. This model argues for the need to have a multiplicity of public sphericules (instead of one single public sphere as advocated by Habermas), around which individuals can congregate to discuss issues of common concern to them. Using a combination of qualitative content analysis, self-completion questionnaires and a semi-structured interview, the study found Blogmark to be an example of how emerging internet genres such as weblogs can be vehicles of citizen involvement in public life. A range of issues were discussed in the blog, from politics, race and ii i gender issues, to personal anecdotes, relationships, and sex. However, while some posts exhibited high levels of interactivity, with many bloggers joining in to offer their opinions, some read like online monologues. The study argues that although blogging is a practice that is still limited to a few privileged individuals, with the everrising size of the ‘blogosphere’, weblogs such as Blogmark are making a small but not insignificant contribution to the number of voices that can be heard in the public realm.

Gotta go fast: Measured rationalities and rational measurements in the context of speedrunning

Schmidt, Marcus January 2018 (has links)
This thesis studies the Weberian notion of rationality in the context of speedrunning and the speedrunning community. By contrasting the instrumental rationality of the speedrunning practice with the value-oriented rationality of the community, it crystallizes the difference between "performing the metrics" as an extension of community values and as a function of externally imposed constraints. The former is an expression of autonomy, while the latter an expression of heteronomy. This difference, it is argued, is found in many different areas of society, sometimes in the guise of "audit culture", at other times as an unintended side-effect of established forms of practice. In either case, a return to communal values (e.g. the sociological imagination) is seen as an antidote to becoming an extension of someone else’s metrics; autonomy is not a function of performing to external specifications, but of being able to rationally choose which measurements to use and which to leave aside. Speedrunners, in their endeavor to go fast, express such autonomy, albeit implicitly. By analyzing YouTube videos wherein runners explain their tactics and methods, this thesis endeavors to make this aspect of autonomy ever so slightly more explicit.

Alteração do código florestal brasileiro : a dinâmica da esfera pública no estado do Rio Grande do Sul

Lorenzetti, Julia Vaz January 2012 (has links)
The environmental issue has to do with the interdependence between the ecological processes and their implications on the life of human beings. The right to an ecologically balanced environment is therefore viewed in this study as a condition of the right to life, and a fundamental human right. Drawing on Habermas's conception of the public sphere (1997), this dissertation proposes to investigate the dynamics of the public sphere as regards a bill for the reform of the Brazilian Forest Code that is being processed in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. This is therefore a local study addressing a national issue. The public sphere is investigated based on its properties of mediation and deliberation, and considering its formal and informal dimensions. Habermas (1997) argues that the legitimacy of the legislative process depends on the participation of those who will be affected by the legislation – in the case of environmental legislation such as the Forest Code, society as a whole. The analysis was developed from a qualitative descriptive/exploratory research study. The data collection techniques used were participant observation, semi-structured interviewing and documentary research. The data analysis technique used was content analysis. The data analyzed refers to the period between September 2009 and April 2012. The study showed that some segments of society, such as social movements and the private sector, are very active in the public sphere in the fight for the Brazilian Forest Code reform. However, access to the different levels of participation varies, as do the resources that are available to each segment of society, which affects the quality of the deliberation. Finally, the study showed that social movements promote the strengthening of the informal public spheres; however, as regards the formal spheres, it points to the fact that society as a whole could be further integrated into the process of elaboration of environmental legislation – which after all affects society as a whole.
