The Relationship Among Parent Knowledge of Special Education, Assertiveness, and Participation in Planning Their Handicapped Child’s Educational Program

Croxton, Lynne Faxon 01 August 1984 (has links)
This study addressed the relationship among parent assertiveness, parent knowledge of special education and the handicapping condition of their child, and parent participation in the annual meeting of the School-Based Admissions and Release Committee (SBARC). Fifty-one (51) parents of learning disabled and mentally handicapped children in a suburban area of Kentucky participated in the study. The effects of the child’s handicapping condition and the number of years the child’s handicapping condition and the number of years the child had received special education on parent assertiveness, knowledge, and participation were also analyzed. Parents were given the Special Education Knowledge Survey, and experimenter developed measure of knowledge of special education and various handicapping conditions, and the Rathus Assertiveness Schedule. These parents’ interactions were observed during the annual SBARC meeting for their child and the amount of participation and topics of their contributions were recorded by an observer. It was found that the degree of parent assertiveness was significantly predictive of total parent participation in planning the handicapped child’s education, while parent knowledge (knowledge of special education and knowledge of the child’s handicapping condition) did not predict the total amount of participation by the parent. Parent knowledge and the actual number of years the child had received special education were predictive of parent participation in the discussion of some topics regarding the child. The child’s identified handicapping condition was also found to affect total parent participation in the SBARC meeting. The child’s handicapping condition and the number of years the child had received special education were found to have an interactive effect on parent assertiveness and parent discussion of the child’s past educational history. Parents of mentally handicapped children classified for two years or less and parents of learning disabled children classified for more than two years were more assertive than parents of mentally handicapped children classified for more than two years and parents of learning disabled children classified for more than two years were more assertive than parents of mentally handicapped children classified form more than two years and parents of learning disabled children classified for two years or less. The findings specified above were discussed as well as 1) topics in which parents were observed to participate most; 2) the relationship between parent participation and the request of information by professionals, the length of the conference, and the number of people present at the SBARC meeting; 3) the correlation between knowledge and assertiveness; and 4) suggestions for further research.

A Systematic Analysis and Critical Comparison of the Educational Provision for Students in Nigeria with the Available Educational Opportunity for Handicapped Students

Ogunrinu, Thomas B. (Thomas Bode) 08 1900 (has links)
The problem of the study was the inadequate education of handicapped students in Nigeria. The primary purpose of the study was to develop a construct based on the United States models and research on special education, and to compare educational provisions for Nigerian students with the available educational opportunity for handicapped students. In order to achieve the stated objectives of the study, two methodological approaches were utilized: (1) Likert scale for opinion questionnaires, and (2) personal interviews. Both of these instruments included demographic information about the participants. The questionnaire was categorized into three areas (differences between educational opportunities for non-handicapped and handicapped students, formal learning opportunities for handicapped Nigerian students, and factors for being attentive or not being attentive to special education). The interview instrument focused on special education constraints, responsibility for special education provision, and improvement in education for the handicapped. Based on the findings of the study, the following conclusions were reached. 1. Handicapped Nigerian students do not have equal educational opportunities, as compared to non-handicapped students. Therefore, equal instructional opportunities should be provided for handicapped and non-handicapped students. 2. The federal and state governments of Nigeria should be financially responsible for special education. Therefore, the administration of special education must be taken over from private organizations. 3. Lack of funds, personnel and specialists, equipment, and adequate facilities hinders education for the handicapped in Nigeria. In order to improve education for the handicapped, therefore, the following provisions should be made: (1) build more schools, (2) train more specialists, (3) make funds available for special education, (4) provide more facilities and equipment, (5) intensify efforts in early detection of handicaps in children, and (6) educate parents on the importance of special education.

Attitudes and Integration: A Survey of Selected Texas Camp Directors

Hanson, Carol M. (Carol Mary) 08 1900 (has links)
This investigation dealt with the relationships between three main variables: (1) a camp director's prior experience with handicapped individuals and in the field of recreation; (2) a camp director's attitudes toward handicapped persons and their integration into regular camp settings; and (3) a camp director's perception of barriers to integration. The study was carried out via a mail-out questionnaire to 149 Texas camp directors. A return rate of 51% was achieved (66 returned surveys). Questionnaires were scored, and the data were punched on computer cards for analysis. The analysis indicated high reliability of the attitude and barrier scales. Results of the correlational analyses indicated a significant relationship (p = .0001) between a camp director's attitudes and his/her perception of barriers to integration.

Reforma de residências para deficiente físico em cadeira de rodas / Adapting homes for physically handicapped in a wheelchair

Gonçalves, José Luiz 05 April 1986 (has links)
The subject study refers to alternatives to be used in homes of physically handicapped people in wheeling chairs, proposed as micro-factors of social insertion, and at the same time as a macro-factor to allow him to circulated in town for an effective participation in the community\'s life. The built environmental structure that opposes partial or totally the people\'s reduced mobility are the architectural barriers witch are fully studied here to subsidize the modifications proposed. They seek to optimize the inhabited space/life quality binomial through rationalization and adequacy of space, to the demands of the handicapped user and wheeling chairs, his locomotor expedient, as well as access possibility to the home ambient and the utilization of its equipment. The sketched out analysis over the reaching of the physically handicapped when in wheeling chairs, as well as the dimensional demands for the circulation of that vehicle, is shown in the second part of this Thesis, in three chapters. It is not an inedited work thematically viewed. However, while bibliographic inventory and dimensional statistics of space and pertinent installations, it serves as a starting point for standards and pattern definitions suitable to the Brazilian reality and scale, that begins now to demand solutions for the problem of the handicapped people in wheeling chairs.

Material and Methods: This study was designed as a split mouth randomized bind clinical trial. Thirty-two young subjects (17.4 ± 5.6) of both genders were selected according to the inclusion criteria: moderate intellectual disability, minimum of 16 teeth, at least one tooth in each sextant with probing depth ≥ 4 mm. Prior periodontal treatment, the index of plaque, marginal bleeding, probing pocket depth and bleeding were obtained. The experimental gel tested was composed of 5% prilocaine/lidocaine, microemulsion thermosensitive liposomal phospholipid gel. It was compared to a commercially available gel Oraqix (5% prilocaine/lidocaine-thermosensitive gel). The negative controls for both gels were periodontal treatment without anesthesia and the rescue drug used was EMLA cream (5% prilocaine/lidocaine), applied in the periodontal pocket if there was discomfort during scaling and root planning (SRP). The parameters used to assess pain intensity and dental anxiety during periodontal treatment were: Hannallah pain scale; Wong-Baker faces pain rating scale and 11-point numerical rating scale, blood pressure and oxygen saturation. All data were compared with ANOVA and chi-square tests. Results: Hannallah pain scale showed significant difference (p<0.05) during SRP. Wong-Baker faces pain rating scale and 11-point numerical rating scale, blood pressure and oxygen saturation did not have significant difference among groups (p>0.05). The anesthetic gel preference between male and female showed significant difference (p<0.0001). Conclusion: Most of the handicapped patients did not require anesthesia to control pain and anxiety during non-surgical periodontal treatment (SRP). Therefore, the non-invasive topical anesthesia could be indicated for anxious patients.

Passos, Jeane dos Reis 06 August 2010 (has links)
This thesis discuss the issue of visually handicapped, who have ingressed or egressed on higher education of São Paulo as information is regarded; identifying how these students realize the information need and how to acquire, understand and use it. Therefore, a bibliographic review has been developed to discuss the historical and conceptual aspects of Information Literacy, as well as its actions aiming students of higher education. The Brazilians visually handicappeds environment was regarded, focusing on higher education and considering the intellectual, technological, access to physical resources and content scenery in which they live in. In this context, a map of abilities and information literacy skills to be developed by visually handicapped was created, starting from Carol Kuhlthaus Information Literacy model named Information Search Process ISP, which shows the development of gathering instruments, the gathering itself and the analysis of the gathered data. Because it is an exploratory study, a qualitative approach was considered, using the user study to create a map of the questions proposed. A semi-structured interview was made with 10 visually handicapped on graduation or postgraduate education. Produced the results from the diagnosis made in the research and study by Christina Doyle which presents a survey of the predicates for a person to be considered \"information literate.\" As a final result, it presents a list of possible actions for the actors of the educational process of the visually handicapped, especially in higher education, can define actions necessary for the development or promotion of Information Literacy programs specific to the visually handicapped, in order to make them competent in information. It was identified that these actions are contained in three dimensions related to the barriers of accessibility: informational, digital and within relationships.
