An enquiry into the need for occupational health promotion programmes in selected occupational settings: a nursing perspective / Ondersoek na die behoefte aan beroepsgesondheidsbevorderende programme in geselekteerde beroepsituasies : 'n verpleegkundige benadering

Huiskamp, Agnes Alice 25 August 2009 (has links)
This research is aimed at furthering the health promotion and occupational health objectives of the government as is set out in the "The White Paper for the Transformation of the Health System in South Africa Notice 667 of 1997". The aim of this research was to determine the need for occupational health promotion programmes in selected occupational settings from a nursing perspective. The overall outcome of this research demonstrated that a need exists for occupational health promotion programmes in selected occupational settings. This was illustrated by the literature study and by the information collected through a survey. Three frameworks are proposed, namely a holistic approach to an occupational health promotion programme, an empowerment occupational health promotion approach, and a health promoting nursing framework. In addition, guidelines for the development and implementation of an occupational health promotion programme and a health promotion and health promoting nursing training programme are recommended. It is also recommended that health promoting nursing be included in all nursing practice and nursing training curricula. Recommendations for future research centred on the investigation of the present status of occupational health promotion, research regarding the health promoting workplace and campus that involves all stakeholders, the status of health promotion training, and research similar to this one in other regions of South Africa. The division of occupational health and primary health care in occupational health settings needs to be investigated as well. / Health Studies / M.A. (Advanced Nursing Sciences)

A qualitative study that illustrates how managers can promote employee's health

Larsson, Victor, Strid, Andreas January 2020 (has links)
Workplace is frequently described as one of the most valuable environments for health promotion contributions. Tough leadership is described as a valuable part of workplace health promotion there is yet a gap in knowledge of how a promoting leadership is defined and what kind of impact this might have on promoting employee’s health. The aim of this study was to illustrate how managers, responsible of employee’s, work pedagogically with health promotion in practice. The study has a hermeneutic starting point with an abductive approach. Nine semi-structured interviews were conducted and analyzed with a qualitative content analysis. The theoretical frame of this study is based on the health pedagogy theory sense of coherence and the learning theory communities of practice. The result showed that managers managed health promotion through a pedagogical leadership mainly through communication to promote participation and create good relationships and dialogues with employees. Key factors that are considered to be important for health promotion leadership are participation to increased commitment and trust, promoting relationship to encourage an open dialogue and adaptive leadership for balanced demands with a pedagogical approach. Finally, situations that arise between manager and employees are described as part of a mutual development where the group develops its learning through the social meeting. By increasing the dimensions of manageability, participation and meaningfulness, employees will obtain ability to develop a sense of coherence for a better health.

This study analyzes the process of implementation of the “Integrated Sub-system Health Assistance to Public Servers” – (Subsistema Integrado de Atenção à Saúde do Servidor - SIASS, in Portuguese) – in the Municipality of Rio de Janeiro through a case study performed in two federal public institutions situated in Rio de Janeiro. By assuming the hypothesis that the degree of participation of administrators and servers and their conceptions in relation to health and work are determiners in the configuration of a model of assistance and organization of health services, our objective in this research was to identify how a politics for Servers’ Health has been implemented in these public federal institutions in Rio de Janeiro and, in which way this process has either facilitated or made it difficult the consolidation of an integral model of assistance for the workers’ health, as established by the PNSST (National Policy for Workers’ Security and Health). The work presents a literature review which contemplates the different approaches to concepts of the relationship between health/work, the workers’ organization and struggle, and a history and regulation of worker’s health assistance in Brazil. Furthermore, it presents an empirical study which seeks to portray lived experiences under the perspective of both administrators and workers. The data have allowed us to conclude that workers’ services teams in both institutions are able and involved with the issue; they also have a vision of the needs for change within the Program, and search to replace a health assistance practice in their organizations which is constituted by a strategy based on fragmented actions for one which considers an integral perspective to Workers’ Health Assistance. As points for concern, we can pinpoint the lack of a budget specifically addressed to health issues, small groups of practitioners in relation to demand, and also political and administrative barriers. Workers in the sectors responsible for health assistance in the organizations we have studied end up performing a job which is under the standards of the National Policy for Workers’ Security and Health and their on beliefs with respect to a model conceived under a broader concept of workplace health assistance, which involves both the worker and his/her working process.
