DREAMFALL: The Fleeting-ness of Memory

Chen, Hon 01 January 2010 (has links)
My work seeks to simulate the impermanence of memory, through the creation of structures and images that translate the mind’s formless but living past into physical material and sensation. The need to search for the missing six years of my childhood memories in Thailand has been the driving force behind the works, along with the lingering emotions of emptiness and unfulfillment. I create multimedia installations with materials, such as plaster, pvc panels, acrylic, polycrylic and dura-lar, to structurally realize a subject as intangible and elusive as memory. Issues of duality, identity, impermanence and memory are underlying themes for my thesis investigation. Dreamfall is a simulated, dream-like landscape where the pervading sense of solitude exists throughout the sparsity and whiteness of the installation. It is a place for contemplation and silence, a landscape of the past relived.

The mineralization of trace elements in a skarn exposure of Hong Kong

Wan, Kit-ying., 尹潔瑩. January 2012 (has links)
A small piece of sample collected from a contact calcium-skarn aureole in San Shek Wan of Lantau Island surprisingly shows abundance of Thorium (Th) and Rare Earth Elements (REEs). Concentration of these trace elements in skarn is of special interest for its impact to human health and its economic values. Concentration of these elements in skarn is closely related to the tectonic setting, the initial magma chemistry and the depth of magma intrusion where the skarn is being formed. These variables in skarn formation process can be analyzed by studying the geology of the area, accompanied by analyzing mineralogy of the skarn. Mineral zoning of garnet-pyroxene prograde skarn and chemical zoning within garnet crystal also provide clues to the pressure-temperature condition when the skarn aureole was formed. Impact of these elements to human health is evaluated by abundance of these elements exposed and assessed through various means – radiation, inhalation and ingestion. / published_or_final_version / Applied Geosciences / Master / Master of Science

To evaluate the contribution of owner committee to the quality of housing management in the private residential property in Hong Kong

Wu, Ka-wan, 胡家穩 January 2014 (has links)
The property management in Hong Kong has emerged in its importance in the past decades. The people’s thought towards property management has changed from the provision of basic services such as watchmen and cleaners to a professional servicing industry. Moreover, as changes in people’s attitude in service consumption and social values, the requirement of the owners for the property management services raised. Apart from this, the participation of Owner Committee ( OC ) in the property management has become more significant which has been recognized by the residents, the property management practitioners as well as the government. As a result of the rapid population growth, the demand for the housing has increased rapidly too thus, led to the development of multi-storey buildings in large scale. The government policy has encouraged the participation of OC in the management of the building by formation of Owners Incorporations aiming at the promotion of a ‘self-help’ approach for which the OC could manage the building on their own. The encouragement of the government by enactment of the Building Management Ordinance has strengthened the power of the Incorporated Owners as they have the power to terminate and to appoint managers at their choice. However, we always hear that Owner Committee (OC) will cause a lot of quarrels between OC and the property managers/property management companies and bring a lot of troubles to the property manager/property management company. Sometimes the property managers/ property management companies complained that the requirement of the OC is too high to meet and unreasonable. Moreover, they also complained that OC controls too much on them so that their efficiency of work and their daily performance will be reduced. In addition, it creates a great impact to the property management companies and to the industry of property management. For example, the incidents of termination of property managers/property management companies were increased for the past decade. Does OC really could not perform their function and to make contribution to improve the quality of private residential property in Hong Kong? In this dissertation, it is to find out whether the OC participation in the management of the property has positive impacts on the management quality of the estates or not. If yes, to what extent or level that OC could help improve the quality of the private residential property in Hong Kong. After the estate study, it was found that OC participation in the management of the property could help the management company understand their needs and become more accountable. It was also noted that by the questionnaire survey and face to face interviews, the estate selected for the estate study that is a high level of participation of OC, all the comments and results have a higher satisfaction rate and a positive impacts on the management quality of the estate as well as in the whole property management industry. / published_or_final_version / Housing Management / Master / Master of Housing Management

Att fånga flödet i kollektivtrafiken : En jämförelse mellan handelsplatser i Hong Kongs och Stockholms tunnelbana / To capture the flow of public transport : A comparison between market places in Hong Kong’s and Stockholm’s subway

Jenny Karlsson, Jenny, Sofia Landberg, Sofia January 2013 (has links)
The retail sector is in a continuous development. What demand looks like and where the consumers want to shop has changed during the last years. Market place, demand, supply, external factors and politics affect how the retail sector develops. To make a market place attractive a variety of factors have to be considered. In Hong Kong a model called Rail & Property is used, this means that the development of the subway is integrated with the development of the city. The model is both successful and economically sustainable.Today the supply of shops and services in Stockholm´s subway stations is rather small. There are mainly two types of market places. The first one is owned by SL, the other is owned by an external commercial property company. In addition there is the special case of the central station which Jernhusen owns. The comparison between different market places shows that there are both similarities and differences in Hong Kong and Stockholm. The biggest difference is the clear strategy in Hong Kong which makes it both easier and more profitable to develop the subway. The actors in Stockholm´s subway have in general a positive attitude to development of commerce. The travelers demand an opportunity to perform everyday matters, they generally want a grocery store. Most interesting stations for development are those with high development potential, high flow of travelers and interchange possibilities. To achieve a successful market place it is important to consider the big picture, retail mix and make sure cooperation works. This requires changes in both organisation and working methods. We recommend 3D-properties, public private partnership, formation of a new company, control by contract and creation of safe gathering point.

Förortens subversiva femininitet : En narrativ analys av pjäsen Vem som hon / The subversive femininity of the suburb : A narrative analysis of the theater performance Vem som hon

Mikkola Jäghammar, Amanda January 2023 (has links)
This paper examines how femininity is negotiated in the play "Vem som hon" from an intersectional perspective based on five female characters. The narrative space is an unspoken suburb in Stockholm. The play deals with themes such as sisterhood, violence, poverty, racism and segregation. Through a narrative analysis of the script and the recording of the play, it examines how femininity is made in the place linked to race and class. The essay aims to answer how the characters negotiate femininity in the play and what boundaries they relate to and what role the place has in their creation of femininity. The essay wants to highlight the girls' voices and show a complex picture of the suburb as a place where people's identities are changing and multifaceted. The conclusion shows that the characters in different ways move across the boundaries of what is considered feminine and masculine and that they construct themselves through a sense of belonging to each other and the suburb as a place. Through ideals of chastity and religion, the characters try to gain respectability while their lives are characterized by violence and a rejection of normative feminine ideals.

Vulvan, förlossningen och mötet med modergudinnan : Om Monica Sjöös målning God giving birth

Björk, Chanda January 2010 (has links)
This study is about the artist Monica Sjoo’s (1938-2005) painting God giving birth (1968) that was accused of being blasphemous and obscene in the early 1970s. God giving birth could have had much in common with Niki de Saint-Phalle’s She – a cathedral (1966), both works suggesting a mother goddess image. The main difference however can be found in the fact that Monica Sjoo’s painting had connection to the women’s movement in the 1970s. Monica Sjoo’s artwork responded to other feminist artwork of that period. Among several feminist artists during the period about 1968-1985, an iconography was in use that focused on vulvar imagery, experience of childbirth and goddess images. In particulary the mother goddess was embraced. The female body in art was re-sacred and invested with meaning connected with women’s cycles of birth-death and rebirth and the earth as a mother goddess.

Na černé listině: Hollywoodští rudí a hony na čarodejnice v americkém filmovém průmyslu (1947-1960) / On the Black List: Hollywood Reds and Witch Hunting in the American Motion Picture Industry (1947-1960)

Srch, Daniel January 2014 (has links)
On the Blacklist: Hollywood Reds and Witch Hunting in the American Motion Picture Industry (1947-1960) Abstract At the beginning of the Cold War, the American motion picture industry was struck with a "witch-hunt" that led to establishment of the so-called blacklist. Due to this controversial policy, three hundred "Reds" (actual or perceived members of the U.S. Communist Party) were shut out from work in Hollywood during 1947-1950. The first explanation of this phenomenon can be seen in the bipolarity of the post-war world where the United States took leadership in a crusade against the Soviet Union. One result of this seemingly international crusade was that it also became domestic-followers of the U.S. Communist Party became actual public enemies. A deeper analysis of whole issue, however, requires that other elements must be seriously taken into account. The microcosm of Hollywood, some principles of American thinking and the activities of the Reds themselves provide crucial insights into comprehensively understanding the complexity of blacklisting. Experience with the Hollywood blacklist included many different aspects. First of all, it was a political battle with the "inquisitors" from the House Committee on Un-American Activities who helped establish the anti-Communist policy in American motion...

Srovnání fikčního světa počítačovách her a jejich literárních předloh / Comparison of fictional world of computer games and of their literary artworks

Kovaříková, Šárka January 2016 (has links)
The main goal of this thesis is to explain the relationship of literature and computer games. The first part deals with the definition of computer RPG genre and literary fantasy genre. It considers aspects which leads players to play computer games and connect between the literary work and the computer game. It deals also with the experience: the experience of the game and reading while specifically dealing with the flow effect and concept of immersion. A central part of this work examines both media through narrative approach. Interpretation and literary analysis of The Witcher Saga by Andrzej Sapkowski and computer game The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt follows the specifics of the construction of the story in two different media through narrative figures (events, characters and space) and their possible modifications. Furthermore, it tracks purposes and methods for these variations and their impact on the recipient.
