Analytical and Computational Tools for the Study of Grazing Bifurcations of Periodic Orbits and Invariant ToriThota, Phanikrishna 07 March 2007 (has links)
The objective of this dissertation is to develop theoretical and computational tools for the study of qualitative changes in the dynamics of systems with discontinuities, also known as nonsmooth or hybrid dynamical systems, under parameter variations. Accordingly, this dissertation is divided into two parts.
The analytical section of this dissertation discusses mathematical tools for the analysis of hybrid dynamical systems and their application to a series of model examples. Specifically, qualitative changes in the system dynamics from a nonimpacting to an impacting motion, referred to as grazing bifurcations, are studied in oscillators where the discontinuities are caused by impacts. Here, the study emphasizes the formulation of conditions for the persistence of a steady state motion in the immediate vicinity of periodic and quasiperiodic grazing trajectories in an impacting mechanical system. A local analysis based on the discontinuity-mapping approach is employed to derive a normal-form description of the dynamics near a grazing trajectory. Also, the results obtained using the discontinuity-mapping approach and direct numerical integration are found to be in good agreement. It is found that the instabilities caused by the presence of the square-root singularity in the normal-form description affect the grazing bifurcation scenario differently depending on the relative dimensionality of the state space and the steady state motion at the grazing contact.
The computational section presents the structure and applications of a software program, TC-HAT, developed to study the bifurcation analysis of hybrid dynamical systems. Here, we present a general boundary value problem (BVP) approach to locate periodic trajectories corresponding to a hybrid dynamical system under parameter variations. A methodology to compute the eigenvalues of periodic trajectories when using the BVP formulation is illustrated using a model example. Finally, bifurcation analysis of four model hybrid dynamical systems is performed using TC-HAT. / Ph. D.

Applications of Hybrid Dynamical Systems to Dynamics of Equilibrium ProblemsGreenhalgh, Scott 05 September 2012 (has links)
Many mathematical models generally consist of either a continuous system like that of a system of differential equations, or a discrete system such as a discrete game theoretic model; however, there exist phenomena in which neither modeling approach alone is sufficient for capturing the behaviour of the intended real world system. This leads to the need to explore the use of combinations of such discrete and continuous processes, namely the use of mathematical modeling with what are known as hybrid dynamical systems.
In what follows, we provide a blueprint for one approach to study several classes of equilibrium problems in non-equilibrium states through the direct use of hybrid dynamical systems. The motivation of our work stems from the fact that the real world is rarely, if ever, in a state of perfect equilibrium and that the behaviour of equilibrium problems in non-equilibrium states is just as complex and interesting (if not more so) than standard equilibrium solutions. Our approach consists of an association of classes of traffic equilibrium problems, noncooperative games, minimization problems, and complementarity problems to a class of hybrid dynamical system called projected dynamical systems. The purposed connection between equilibrium problems and projected dynamical system is made possible through mutual connections to the robust framework of variational inequalities.
The results of our work include theoretical contributions such as showing how evolution solutions (non-equilibrium solutions) can be analyzed from a theoretical point of view and how they relate to equilibrium solutions; computational methods for tracking and visualizing evolution solutions and the development of numerical algorithms for simulation; and applications such as the effect of population vaccination decisions in the spread of infectious disease, dynamic traffic networks, dynamic vaccination games, and nonsmooth electrical circuits.

Modelling Functional Dynamical Systems By Piecewise Linear Systems With DelayKahraman, Mustafa 01 September 2007 (has links) (PDF)
Many dynamical systems in nature and technology involve delays in the interaction of variables forming the system. Furthermore, many of such systems involve external inputs or perturbations which might force the system to have arbitrary initial function. The conventional way to model these systems is using delay differential equations (DDE). However, DDEs with arbitrary initial functions has serious problems for finding analytical and computational solutions. This fact is a strong motivation for considering abstractions and approximations
for dynamical systems involving delay. In this thesis, the piecewise linear systems with delay on piecewise constant part which is a useful subclass of hybrid dynamical systems is studied. We introduced various representations of these systems and studied the state transition conditions. We showed that there exists fixed point and periodic stable solutions. We modelled the genomic regulation of fission
yeast cell cycle. We discussed various potential uses including approximating the DDEs and finally we concluded.

Étude des comportements chaotiques dans les convertisseurs statiques / Study of chaotic behaviors in static converterDjondiné, Philippe 07 July 2015 (has links)
This thesis deals with the analysis of chaotic behaviors in serial multicellularconverters. These switching systems can have a variety of complex phenomenaassociated with bifurcations and chaos. Knowing that a power converter that has a purely dissipative load cannot generate chaotic behavior, we've in the first part of this thesis, we connected a two-cell chopper to a nonlinear load not strictly dissipative and we've analyzed its behaviors by using some basic dynamic properties and thus presented the routes to chaos. The end of this part was devoted to the study of the 5-cell chopper which is a generalization of the two-cell chopper. In order to eliminate the chaotic behavior, the second part was devoted to the synthesis of a controlled law based on hybrid modeling of Petri nets for the regulation of capacitor voltages and current load.

This thesis deals with Zeno behavior of hybrid systems, and it has four main contributions : a method of eliminating "chattering" phenomena of hybrid automata, by computing an equivalent dynamics using a new convexification approach ; a method for accelerating the simulation of geometric-Zeno behavior in which the solution converges to a Zeno limit point according to a geometric series ; a proof of preservation by the above methods of a semantics of hybrid automata based on non-standard analysis ; a development of three prototype software, one in the form of a Simulink library, the other in the form of an FMI simulation environment, and the third being an implementation of the regularization method in the Modeling and simulation tool Acumen.

Atteignabilité hybride des systèmes dynamiques continus par analyse par intervalles : application à l'estimation ensembliste / Hybrid reachability of continuous dynamical systems by interval analysis : application to the set-membership estimationMeslem, Nacim 23 June 2008 (has links)
This thesis addresses the computation of conservative over-approximation of the solutions of uncertain ordinary di erential equations and its application to the estimation and the analysis of uncertain continuous-time dynamical systems. The main feature of the methods and algorithms presented in this thesis is the fact that they are numerically veri ed and hence can be used to obtain numerical proof of properties. This thesis is organized in two parts. The first part is devoted to the mathematical tools and the guaranteed numerical integration methods for uncertain ordinary di erential equations. These methods make it possible to characterize in a guaranteed way all the state trajectories generated by an uncertain dynamical system whose uncertainties are in a natural way described by bounded boxes. Accordingly, we have developed a hybrid integration method which gives better results than the integration methods based on interval Taylor models. The second part is dedicated to the resolution of identi cation and observation issues in a bounded error context. It also deals with continuous reachability computation for the veri cation of the properties of hybrid dynamical systems.

Event-triggered control is a sampling paradigm in which the sequence of transmission instants is determined based on the violation of a state-dependent criterion and not a time-driven clock. In this thesis, we deal with event-triggered output-based controllers to stabilize classes of nonlinear systems. The contributions of the presented material are threefold: (i) we stabilize a class of nonlinear systems by using an emulation-based approach; (ii) we develop a co-design procedure to simultaneously design the output feedback law and the event-triggering condition for linear systems; (iii) we propose stabilizing event-triggered controllers for nonlinear systems whose dynamics have two-time scales (in particular, we only rely on the knowledge of an approximate model of the slow dynamics)

Analyse de stabilité et synchronisation des systèmes singulièrement perturbés / Stability analysis and synchronisation of singularly perturbed systemsBen Rejeb, Jihene 19 September 2017 (has links)
In the first part, we introduce and analyze a general class of singularly perturbed linear hybrid systems, in which the slow or fast nature of the variables is mode-dependent. Our stability analysis is based on classical results of Lyapunov’s theory for singularly perturbed systems. A second part of this work presents the design of a decentralized control strategy that allows singularly perturbed multi-agent systems to achieve synchronization with global performance guarantees. To avoid the use of centralized information related to the interconnection network structure, the problem is solved by rewriting the synchronization problem in terms of stabilization of a singularly perturbed uncertain linear system

Hybrid dynamical systems are characterized for showing simultaneously a variety of dynamic behaviors (continuous, discrete, discrete events) in different parts of the System. This work discusses stability results in the Lyapunov sense for general hybrid dynamical systems that use a generalized notion of time, defined in a completely ordered metric space. It has been shown that these systems may be immersed in discontinuous dynamical systems defined in R+, so that their quality properties are preserved. As the main focus, it is studied stability results for discontinuous dynamical systems modeled by semigroup operators, in which the states belong to Banach spaces. In this case, an alternative to the classical theory of stability, the results do not make use of the usual Lyapunov functions, and therefore are easier to apply, in view of the difficulty in finding such functions for many systems. Furthermore, the results were applied to a class of time-delay discontinuous differential equations.
