21	"For the fifty-eleventh time" : Examining cross-linguistic properties of hyperbolic numerals and quasi-numeral expressions through parallel text extraction / "För femtioelfte gången" : En tvärspråklig parallellkorpusstudie av räkneord och kvasinumeriska uttryck i hyperbolisk användning Kann, Amanda January 2022 (has links) In some languages, vague and exaggerated quantities can be represented using certain conventionalised numeral expressions with cross-linguistically varying values, such as Danish hundredesytten "117". Hyperbolic quantities can also be expressed using other quantifier expressions (such as English zillion) which, while they do not denote a specific numerical value, have both structural and functional similarities with exact numerals.These hyperbolic numerals and quasi-numerals are common in a variety of primarily informal contexts, but have yet to be subject to a systematic cross-linguistic investigation. In this study, hyperbolic numerals and quasi-numeral expressions are extracted from a massively parallel corpus of film and TV subtitles in a convenience sample of 50 languages, using automatic word alignments and seed expressions in 5 languages. Additional expressions are also obtained through elicitation. The collected expressions are subsequently analyzed and categorized to investigate patterns in distribution, value, morphology, function and usage. Findings include a cross-linguistic preference toward certain powers of the numeral base for hyperbolic numerals, and consistent patterns of construction with varying degrees of cross-linguistic prevalence for quasi-numerals. / Obestämda och överdrivna mängder kan i vissa språk uttryckas genom specifika räkneord med tvärspråkligt varierande, exakta numeriska värden, t ex danska hundredesytten "117". Överdrivna mängder kan även uttryckas med andra kvantifieraruttryck (t ex engelska zillion) som liknar räkneord i form och funktion, trots att de inte har något eget numeriskt värde. Dessa hyperboliska räkneord och kvasinumeriska uttryck är vanligt förekommande i informellt språk, men har ännu inte varit föremål för en systematisk tvärspråklig undersökning. All the tasks are designed for students to learn how to work with this software. Mimicking this creative process in the Canadian Northwest, Sweatman conceives and births a womans previously erased passion back into the adventure story in a playful, erotic, and politically-charged presentation of the performing female body. Although appreciating the magic realism element to the novel (157), Nicole Markotic suggests that Sweatmans characters, like the readers, become History Tourists and are mere backdrop for the last century or so of Current Events that take precedence over their stories (156). The McCormack women, Markotic argues, have few stories other than going to war, having one momentous sex scene, giving birth (156). Indeed, Sweatmans whirlwind tour through 109 years of well-documented, and already too many times rehashed, rebellions, labour strikes, and world wars, seems to reflect this sentiment, but to limit Sweatman and her characters to only the Empires gender performative is to miss the female body performing as its own Big Bang.<p>Since a womans contingency and agency within the Empires gender performative has been vigorously debated by post modern and cultural theorists, Sweatman chooses to birth her characters into a world of/as performance. 26	A critical analysis of the translation strategies used by SM Serudu in his translation of Mandela's Long Walk to Freedom into seSotho sa Leboa Kanyane, Francinah Mokgobo 11 1900 (has links) Text in English / This study examines and discovers the translation strategies as employed in the Sesotho sa Leboa translation of Mandela's Long Walk to Freedom. Mandela's Long Walk to Freedom was published in 1995 and was translated into Sesotho sa Leboa by S M Serudu in 2001. The Sesotho sa Leboa translation of the life history of Mandela, Leetotelele go ya Tokologong (Long Walk to Freedom) is one of the four completed translations to date that form part of the assignment to translate the original text into the official languages of South Africa. The aim of this study is to investigate the translation strategies used to transfer linguistic and cultural items in the translation of Mandela's autobiography. The study is mainly qualitative and examines the strategies employed by Serudu. For data collection, the source and target texts of Mandela's Long Walk to Freedom as well as the semi-structured face-to-face interviews with four translators into Sesotho sa Leboa, isiZulu, isiXhosa and Afrikaans were used. The study is based on the Descriptive Translation Studies Theory, Bassnett and Lefevere's "cultural turn" as well as the domestication and foreignization strategies. In this case, it investigates if Serudu has domesticated and/or foreignized his translation. The findings revealed that Serudu domesticated his translation by using metaphors, similes, personification, euphemism, hyperbole, proverbs, idioms and the use of descriptive words. Foreignization was also found when the translator dealt with the borrowing and loaning of words where most of the concepts were transferred, Sotholised, retained and transferred, as they were, especially culture specific items. / African Languages / D. 27	Svět italské komicko-realistické poezie / The world of the italian comic-realistic poetry Žáčková, Magdalena January 2017 (has links) The doctoral thesis The World of Italian Comic-Realistic Poetry maps in a mostly chronological order the type of Italian poetry that is often referred to as 'giocosa' or 'comico- realistica' - in Czech translation, this best corresponds to 'poezie komicko-realistická'. The principal themes and individual topoi within the genre are analysed one by one, and examples are introduced to demonstrate the propositions related to the existence, characteristics and quality of the genre and the comic contained therein. The introduction is followed by an analysis of comic-realistic poetry of the first period which saw its heyday, namely, the first half of the 14th century, roughly comprising the years 1280- 1340. Following an analysis of sonnets by Rustico di Filippi, who is considered the emblematic founder of the genre in Italy, various topics are gradually analysed such as Bakhtinian reversal in values and seeming protest against the world, poverty and money, woman and anti-stilnovismo in sonnets of a great number of poets of the time, the most typical of them being Cecco Angiolieri. Topics with a more realistic background are also included, religious and political sonnets in particular.
