: A Study of how the School Librarian's Role has Changed in Job Advertisements with Schools as Employers

Ohlström, Tove, Lundberg, Anna January 2022 (has links)
The purpose of this study has been to increase the understanding of the school librarian's profession in a Swedish context, by making visible how the professional role has changed over time from a school-related employer perspective. By using content analysis, the study has investigated how the school librarian's role has been described in 132 job advertisements with schools as employers over a twenty-year period, between 2001 and 2021. The content of the job advertisements has been analyzed, looking at both the skills required and the tasks described. The IFLA School Library Guidelines has been used as a framework for the coding process. The authors examined the extent to which the key roles and competencies of a school librarian mentioned in the Guidelines were represented in job advertisements seeking school librarians from 2001 to 2021.  Abbotts theory of the professions and the central concept of jurisdiction was used in the analysis of the data. The results show that the tasks and competencies described in the job advertisements have become more profession-specific during the chosen twenty-year period. This increase of profession-specific tasks and competencies indicates that the jurisdiction of the school librarian profession has been strengthened. The empirical data also show that the school librarian profession has renegotiated jurisdiction over teaching and reading promotion and acquired new professional tasks.  This is a two years master’s thesis in Library and Information Science.

The public libraries goals and missions : A study about the public libraries and the functions they have in the society

Gren, Magnus January 2017 (has links)
This paper explores the goals and functions of the public libraries in Sweden. This is regarding their materials, what groups they are focusing on and what their purpose is in the society. The paper focus on the four interviews that I have conducted which also are what this study is based upon. I have used the model of Andersson & Skot Hansen (1994) to analyze the material and the results that I have found. This in order to determine what functions the public library has that I have chosen as an example for this study. It displays what functions the chosen library has in its community and the goals of the public libraries. The result shows that the libraries strive to spread culture, literature and information to all groups in the society and to support all forms of education. The paper also reveals that the library that I have chosen has many functions in its community as public libraries often has.

Paula, Marciléia Aparecida de 25 April 2018 (has links)
Considering the importance of measuring and evaluating the quality of the processes practiced in an institution, this work aims to research about performance indicators for libraries and proposes their application. The object of the work is delimited considering, specifically, the processes of collections development (more related to the evaluation of the use of the collection) and technical processing of the Libraries System of Federal University of ABC (SisBi UFABC). To accomplish that, it reviews the literature on the topics covered (Quality, Quality Management, Evaluation in Information Services and Performance Indicators), contextualizes the macro and micro environments involved (UFABC, SisBi UFABC, Division of Collections Development and Division of Technical Processing) and presents cases of applications of performance indicators in libraries. Analyzes the third edition of BS ISO 11620 Information and documentation - Library performance indicators, published in 2014, and the second edition of the IFLA Guidelines, entitled Measuring quality: performance measurement in libraries, published in 2007. Both documents provide guidance for the application of performance indicators specifically in libraries. After analyzing the two documents, it presents the application of six performance indicators, three for the processes of collections development (Required Titles Availability; Collection Turnover and Percentage of Stock not Used) and three for the technical processing (Median Time of Document Processing; Employee Productivity in Media Processing and Staff Costs per Title Catalogued). Finally, it presents the results analysis, as well as the final considerations.
