Guanxi and corporate community involvementYang, Rui January 2012 (has links)
This research investigates the relationship between guanxi and Corporate Community Involvement (CCI) in the Chinese business environment. The thesis provides valuable insights into the motivation and management of CCI in China where the institutional and cultural context is radically different from the Western contexts. This thesis also places CCI in the context of guanxi and thus bridges the literatures on CCI and guanxi. Strategic motivation and management of CCI has been studied extensively in the context of Western countries. However, the extant literature offers limited insights into the motivation and management of CCI in the Chinese business environment. The Chinese business environment is characterised by a comparatively poor legal system and weak property rights. In such an environment guanxi – a system of personal connections that carry long-term social obligations – are held to play a significant role in business relationships in China. Earlier studies have found that guanxi is able to influence a variety of corporate behaviours. Nevertheless, no attempt has been made to investigate how CCI may have been influenced by guanxi in China. This research develops a conceptual model and six propositions, which explain how CCI is strategically tailored to initiate guanxi, and furthermore, facilitate inter-organisational relationship development through such guanxi in China. Based on an empirical case analysis of 148 CCI projects from three types of company; foreign, state-owned, and private, this research explores the relationship between CCI and guanxi and tests the conceptual model and propositions. The empirical data was collected deploying face-to-face, semi-structured interviews with 65 companies (30 foreign companies, 9 state-owned companies, and 26 private companies) in China. The findings indicate that foreign companies’ and private companies’ CCI are motivated by guanxi development. Their CCI behaviours are strategically tailored to initiate guanxi with key stakeholders, and in particular with stakeholders who possess strong governmental backgrounds; and Chinese state-owned companies’ CCI behaviours are subject to little influence of guanxi development. While foreign companies used guanxi to facilitate their inter-organisational relationship development, private companies used guanxi to obtain formal institutional supports. From the findings, the conclusion is drawn that guanxi plays a significant role in motivating CCI engagement and shaping CCI behaviours in China, and, through such guanxi, CCI can be employed to facilitate inter-organisational relationship building and obtain formal institutional support.

Sustaining Lean ImprovementsSchlichting, Christopher Carsten 17 December 2009 (has links)
"Starting in the 1980s with the first Toyota controlled production plant in the United States (NUMMI), the idea of Lean as derived from the Toyota Production System has become a popular method to improve production processes as well as any other procedure in organizations around the world. Over the last three decades a multitude of literature on Lean implementation and consulting companies offering help with the Lean transformation have emerged. The success rate of real Lean transformations however is often estimated to lie below 10% by experts such as Clifford Ransom or members of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME). This leads to the question of why most companies fail to sustain the Lean improvements that most of them are able to initiate during the early implementation stages. This thesis will therefore investigate the root causes that lead to a time dependent loss of Lean improvements from three different perspectives. One standpoint is given by the TPS beliefs which are united in the House of Lean. The second angle on the topic is drawn from an online search of expert opinions and the final evaluation is taken from analyzing a real case scenario at a plant in Trumbull, CT. After this thorough analysis of possible root causes a set of countermeasures is presented that will support an organization in avoiding the major mistakes of a Lean implementation. The three countermeasures include standardization to build a base for Lean improvements, employee involvement to assure sustainability through conviction and continuous instead of rapid improvement. Every countermeasure will be described theoretically as well as with the help of examples from real life scenarios to enable the reader to apply the suggestions immediately. A final discussion will then examine the improvements that where reached at the production plant in Trumbull, CT and show how the combination of all three countermeasures ensures the sustainability of these improvements."

In emerging literature on crowdfunding, studies have attempted to identify the contributions of this new form of participation from each of the consumer and business standpoints (Belleflamme et al., 2010; Davis et al., 2017; Ordanini et al., 2011; Tomczak and Brem, 2013; Vulkan et al., 2016). Crowdfunding enables businesses to garner funds earmarked for the creation or distribution of new products (Belleflamme et al., 2014), while providing marketers with the wherewithal for testing concepts and adjusting marketing mix (Belleflamme et al., 2014; Ducarroz et al., 2016). Through the addition of a financial component, crowdfunding permits Internet users to broaden the scope of their participation in business affairs. Based on an analysis of emerging literature on crowdfunding and a netnography of the virtual communities grouped together around a project, this study presents a model designed to integrate the causes and consequences of participation in crowdfunding campaigns, thereby providing for the holistic study of this participatory phenomenon. To our knowledge, such a study has never before been conducted. For the purpose of the research at hand, the authors define the term ‘participation’ to mean ‘the fact of engaging financially, creatively or socially in a business project’.’ The new construct and accompanying measurements make it possible to put into perspective determinants and consequences which include as follows: innovativeness, altruism, need to belong, perceived benefits, perceived risks, description of project, description of project initiator, brand relationship. These determinants and consequences enable the authors to explain, to a large extent, crowdfunding campaign participation behaviour. Their research also enriches crowdfunding literature with the first ever empirically validated model using structural equations. In point of fact, the conceptual model tested with 445 individuals having previously taken part in a crowdfunding campaign demonstrates satisfactory stability. Results show that the primary antecedents of participation in crowdfunding campaigns are innovativeness and the seeking out of benefits which outweigh perceived risks. In contrast, downstream of the model, the primary consequence of participation relates to the affective dimension of the brand relationship. Through the use of an integrated project management approach (IPMA), findings contribute in a number of different ways to enhancing managerial understanding of participation, including the social, creative and financial dimensions of the latter.

The moderating effect of social media involvement and brand love on the consumer perceived values and purchasing intention of fast-fashion productsTangpattanakit, Jaruporn January 2017 (has links)
The concept of "customer perceived value" has been evolving as an essential area within the marketing discipline for decades. Knowing what shapes consumer perception towards a product or service is vital for businesses (Sweeney and Soutar, 2001), especially for fashion products whose trends are ever-changing. Nevertheless, in the technology era, fashion consumers tend to use the spectrum of media platforms to search for information, to compare prices and exchange experiences amongst a common group. According to McKinsey and Company (2014), up to 35% of fashion consumers rely on online recommendations prior to making a purchasing decision. Given the challenges in this area of business, the aim of this study is to develop the multidimensional scale to measure consumer social media involvement. The measurement scale has been tested in the conceptual models by investigating the moderating effect of social media involvement influencing the relationships of customer perceived value and purchasing intention. The proposed scale is also examined within the customer perceived value dimensions against the key consequences. Moreover, the concept of brand love is incorporated within this study. Sometimes, people purchase brand not product itself and brand love construct is recently new concept and limited studies investigated into this area. Therefore, this study focuses on the moderating effect of social media involvement and brand love towards customer perceived value and purchasing intention for fast-fashion products. A quantitative research method was undertaken to collect research data. The self administered questionnaires were completed by Thai consumers at three particular department stores located in central Bangkok. The data analysis was then performed based on the returned, completed questionnaires of 630 respondents. Both exploratory and confirmatory analysis techniques were used to validate the measurement scale of the study. Structural equation modelling was conducted to test the hypotheses of both direct and indirect relationships. The quantitative results show customer perceived value from multiple dimensions (social, emotional, price and quality) towards fast fashion products. It was found that there is a direct causal relationship between the customer perceived value and purchasing intention, influenced by the level of social media involvement and brand love. An individual who has a high level of social media involvement and brand love tends to perceive a greater consumption experience which lead to preceding the positive outcomes. Therefore, fashion retailers should consider these dimensions and maintain a favourable relationship to enhance the consumer perception experience. Moreover, utilising the advantages from social media to connect with customers should not be neglected. However, the results showed that not all dimensions were found to have a positive effect on consumer purchasing intention towards fast fashion products equally; hence, the fashion marketers should deliberately evaluate each dimension of desired customer perceived value prior to applying a particular strategic plan. Moreover, the findings of this study are of the greatest importance to consumer behaviour especially in the area of involvement by extending the further knowledge. Social media involvement measurement scale has been developed from the limitation of exising studies by incorporated multi-facet dimensions (affective, cognitive and behavioural involvement) in the way to capture the complex nature of involvement variables. Furthermore, the model framework demonstrated the motive force behind behavioural intention by investigating the moderating role of social media involvement and brand love within the fast fashion products.

Say, Do, Make?:user involvement in information systems designTokkonen, H. (Helena) 05 March 2019 (has links)
Abstract
User involvement in information systems design has recently gained interest in the media. Numerous systems have been digitalized during product development to help people’s everyday lives. But are information systems designed to meet users’ needs or support users’ goals?
The goal of this research was to understand how user involvement is perceived in information systems design and how users are involved. Is the basis of user involvement what a user Says or what a user Does, or is a user actively participating in the whole design process? The informants of the present study entailed different design projects that were investigated with a qualitative method by interviewing 20 designers of selected design cases.
At first an a priori model of user involvement in information systems design was created based on an analysis of extant literature. The model was used in the analysis of information systems design cases. Based on the empirical data a revised, a posteriori model, UICD model was developed. The UICD model provides on overall picture of user involvement in information systems design. UICD model can aid designers to understand user involvement comprehesively: what users Say, what users Do and what users Make in design process. Compared to the a priori model, UICD model includes the impact of other key stakeholders in information systems design process. / Tiivistelmä
Käyttäjien osallistuttaminen tietojärjestelmien suunnitteluun on herättänyt julkista keskustelua.

Comparative study of 4 exploratory human-centred design tools when deployed in participatory health service settingsCervantes Luna, Andres Felipe January 2017 (has links)
The shift from traditional models of public service design to public-driven ones has been slow in the health service and particularly in the General Practice Consultation in the UK. This hesitation about fully adapting these design methods has been found to be motivated by a lack of evidence regarding the successful implementations of public involvement activities and the use of its tools, partial coverage of these tools, and failures to report on the use of alternative tools, among other reasons. This research therefore aimed to propose Human-Centred Design (HCD) as an underlying philosophy and a pragmatic set of methodologies to better understand the challenges related to the application of customer involvement activities and the use typical methods when deployed in the investigation of issues and opportunities for the design of healthcare settings. This research consisted of three stages. An exploration stage, in which it was identified and confirmed several research gaps as well as a specific case for study with a degree of complexity and known for supporting customer involvement approaches. These activities involved a literature review about customer involvement processes and a qualitative interview study (with 30 participants) in which it was identified that, a suitable case for study to perform a large ethnographic investigation using representative Human-Centred Design tools could be 'Communication and relationship between GPs and patients'. A development stage, in which it was investigated the design of public involvement activities as well as the identification and selection process of some ideal HCD tools (Focus Groups, Future Workshops / Rich Pictures. Love & Break-up Letters, and Crowdsourcing) to work with the selected case. For these activities, a total of 72 participants were recruited (n=18 per activity). Lastly, an evaluation and proposal phase, analysed these tools through a comparative study to identify several of their strengths and weakness in order to identify the best tool or combination of tools. The outcome from this comparison suggested that among the tools used for this research there was not a most optimal option or combination of options and that the success of an involvement activity relies in the careful and thorough preparation of such processes. This research concludes, that the most optimal form of helping health researchers to undertake public involvement research and to better understand the process of identifying and selecting ideal engagement tools, could be by providing a best practice informative guide containing a simplified and comprehensive version of the most commonly found steps embedded in this kind of design practices.

A performance analysis is studied over many years, a perspective of analysis of teaching effectiveness and improvement of pedagogical action. This discussion about teaching with the possibility of multiple practices, that is, non linear, but variable and evolutionary, considering different methodological styles. The concept of styles here present has as a form of action of the teacher, referring to its action, and form of communication. The School Physical Education consolidated as a curricular component is based on a body culture of the movement. However the great questioning of the discipline is related to a quality of its classes, that is, with a capacity of professors in objectives to list, to plan and to organize specific contents of the area. In the literature there is a lack of knowledge about how the contents of school physical education will translate into concrete learning. From these gaps, it is evident that a series of surveys that deal with the teaching of physical education teachers and the responsibility with the objectives of curricular components, or as a Physical Education school has been presenting in the educational scope. For the general purpose of this study was considered as one of the styles of fundamental and professional teaching of physical education teachers and as specific objectives to consider the objectives and contents of elementary school physical education; The evaluation of the teacher during a practical class of Physical Education school; And an analysis of the consistency between the objectives and the evidenced contents and the involvement of the teachers. Thus, it is a study with an exploratory descriptive design that uses a mixed approach. In this model, quantitative and qualitative techniques are used simultaneously during a data collection phase and the results shared during an interpretation phase. The sample is constituted by the Physical Education teachers of Elementary School of the municipal network of Porto Alegre. An initial communication to an electronic address via the Municipal Department of Education. We contacted by email with 54 schools, are a sample was effectively constituted by 4 schools resulting in 5 teachers. For data collection for two instruments. The first instrument used in the field research for a semistructured interview with Physical Education teachers. The issues related to the discipline of Physical Education and teaching-discipline and its pedagogical action, ie, its objectives, contents, methodological procedures and characteristics of the classes. As interviews were recorded and transcribed and an analysis of the generated content was done later. The second instrument used as lecture notes for the SOFIT (aptitude instruction time observation system). SOFIT is a tool that aims to evaluate the quality of physical education teaching. An observation with the SOFIT instrument is divided into two phases. Following the protocol of this instrument, two classes of each teacher were recorded, six lessons (3 boys and 3 girls), two, one boy and one girl, an example of substitution of the observed students. As analyzes of the phases were made and included in the discourse on the pedagogical action of the teacher. As results, it was identified as the profile of the research subjects, their methodological conceptions and some strategies. According to the results, it is not identified with the pedagogical styles, but with the pattern of speeches and performances. The teachers studied, for the most part, presented objectives, context, and involvement in similar classes. For the most part, the contexts of the classes were related to motor, motor and sports skills and with explanation of rules and knowledge. The teachers' attitude towards the issue of education and the administration of the activities, that is, the participating teachers, spent more than half of the time of class involved with the activities and with the students. So to conclude, the School Physical Education seen here is a discipline, planned and structured. These results are positive for the Physical Education school to consolidate its identity without school context and not academic environment.
