Entrepreneurs, Sustainability and the Sharing Economy

This cumulative dissertation captures the sharing economy’s sustainability dynamics by applying a macro-, meso-, and micro-level analysis to investigate the actors and elements involved in constituting the field. On a macro-level, the first study examines the social, political, and economic context that shapes (non-)sustainable sharing entrepreneurs’ behavior. The second study's meso-level analysis investigates how sharing entrepreneurs affect other organizations and communities to act more sustainable. Lastly, the third study adopts a micro-level analysis that focuses on entrepreneurs’ identity formation in the contested sharing economy. Overall, this dissertation contributes to a more fine-grained understanding of sustainability in the sharing economy and the various actors and elements involved in constituting the field. Over the last two decades Bongo Fleva music has become a popular form of entertainment as well as a key cultural element among Tanzanian urban youth. The objective of this paper is to examine the role of pseudonyms in this musical genre in Tanzania. It focuses on how Bongo Fleva artists adopt their pseudonyms and discusses their role in identity formation among urban youths in contemporary Tanzania. The paper argues that pseudonyms in Bongo Fleva, as in various other fields, have an important role to play in portraying one’s identity, culture, characteristics, profile, actions, hope and imagination.

Let`s go party!: Discourse and self-portrayal in the Bongo-Fleva-Song Mikasi

For over a decade now, Bongo Fleva has been the dominant category of popular music in Tanzania, surpassing Muziki wa Dansi (dance music) and Taarab in terms of its presence in the media. Bongo Fleva has become deversified in the last years and at present includes elements of traditional music as well as popular dance music, both of African and Western origin (Raab 2006: 43 ff.). As a result, contemporary Bongo Fleva is stylistically complex. Ther lyrics of Bongo Fleva are specifically determined by 1) the use of Swahili youth language and slang expressions. 2) the representation of modern and young lifestyles, and 3) socio-critical contens with pedagocial and moralistic tendencies. The lyrics of Bongo Fleva are marked by youth discourse which is most important for the construction of youth identities. While Bongo Fleva text with dialogic structure seem to continue the older tradition of Muziki wa Dansi, the dramatic texts remind of the way folk narratives are told in Tanzania. As the dramatic Bongo Fleva texts make use of direct speech, often of several characters, and without introduction, it seems that traditional techniques of story-telling have an effect on Bongo Fleva rap lyrics. In this article a rap text of this kind, Mikasi (\"Sex\"), released in 2004 by Bongo Fleva artist Ngwair, will be analysed with regard to its form, content and function. As it conteain different roles and dialogues, it is suitable for the investigation of youths`talk. A special focus will be put on the self-portrayal of the youths in the dialogues of the song, and on the question how boasting and dissing is performed in a dialogic text.

A study of students’ mathematical identity was carried out in February 2009 involving participants from two colleges of education, one in Dublin (Republic of Ireland) and one in Belfast (Northern Ireland). All participants were pre-service primary school teachers in the third year of their B.Ed. programme, having chosen to specialize in mathematics. Data was gathered using a questionnaire (with, mainly, open-ended questions) followed by focus groups, involving the same participants, on each campus. This paper considers how students’ exploration of their mathematical identity led them to deepen their insight into learning and teaching mathematics. Recommendations are made for how the methods used in this research might be beneficial on a larger scale, in different environments.

Die begriffliche Unterscheidung von Geschlecht als einerseits biologischem Faktum (Sex) sowie anderseits als Produkt kultureller und sozialer Prozesse (Gender) geht auf Arbeiten zur Transsexualität in den sechziger Jahren zurück. Der feministische Diskurs griff die Unterscheidung auf und verstand sie in einem antibiologistischen Sinne. Die Sex-Gender-Unterscheidung impliziert jedoch auch die unhaltbare Annahme, dass es ein biologisches Substrat der Geschlechterdifferenz gäbe, welches kulturellen Unterscheidungen stets vorgängig wäre (latenter Biologismus). Wissenschaftstheoretische Arbeiten verweisen demgegenüber darauf, dass Natur stets durch die Brille der Kultur gesehen wird.

Die Identität der Arbeitgebermarke – Eine explorative Studie zur Entwicklung eines Modells der Arbeitgebermarke

Bereits seit einigen Jahren wird das Konzept des Employer Branding in Unternehmen diskutiert und eingesetzt. Auf wissenschaftlicher Seite fehlte dem Konzept jedoch bis vor wenigen Jahren noch jegliche wissenschaftliche Fundierung. Auch die Identität der Arbeitgebermarke konnte bislang nicht eindeutig ermittelt und dargestellt werden. Das theoretische Ziel dieser Arbeit war es daher, ein umfassendes, exploratives Modell der Arbeitgebermarke zu entwickeln und dadurch eine Lücke in der bestehenden Forschung zur Arbeitgebermarke zu schließen. Zunächst wurde auf Basis der bestehenden Forschungsergebnisse zur Markenidentität ein Ausgangsmodell der Identität der Arbeitgebermarke festgelegt. Mithilfe eines qualitativen Forschungsansatzes konnten dann die einzelnen Bestandteile der Arbeitgebermarke identifiziert und beschrieben werden. Das Ergebnis ist ein detailliertes Modell der Arbeitgebermarke, das nun in der weiteren Forschung, aber auch in der Praxis eingesetzt werden kann. Das praktische Ziel der Arbeit war es, das definierte Modell anhand einer Fallstudie zu erproben und somit die Arbeitgebermarke eines konkreten Unternehmens detailliert zu erheben. Das beschriebene Modell der Arbeitgebermarke ermöglichte es, alle Aspekte, die in Zusammenhang mit der untersuchten Arbeitgebermarke genannt wurden, zuzuordnen, und hat somit seine Vollständigkeit und Anwendbarkeit in der Praxis bewiesen. Das methodische Ziel der vorliegenden Arbeit war es schließlich, eine Untersuchungsweise zu definieren, die es ermöglichte, das theoretische sowie das praktische Ziel dieser Arbeit zu erreichen. Zu diesem Zweck wurde ein qualitativer Ansatz gewählt, der gerade zur Theoriebildung besonders geeignet ist.

Alveolar macrophages (AMs) are lung tissue-resident macrophages that can be expanded in culture, but it is unknown to what extent culture affects their in vivo identity. Here we show that mouse long-term ex vivo expanded AMs (exAMs) maintained a core AM gene expression program, but showed culture adaptations related to adhesion, metabolism and proliferation. Upon transplantation into the lung, exAMs reacquired full transcriptional and epigenetic AM identity, even after several months in culture and could self-maintain long-term in the alveolar niche. Changes in open chromatin regions observed in culture were fully reversible in transplanted exAMs and resulted in a gene expression profile indistinguishable from resident AMs. Our results indicate that long-term proliferation of AMs in culture did not compromise cellular identity in vivo. The robustness of exAM identity provides new opportunities for mechanistic analysis and highlights the therapeutic potential of exAMs.
