Martins, Luciana Júlio 06 May 2009 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2016-04-29T13:18:11Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 Luciana Julio Martins.pdf: 1092048 bytes, checksum: a4d477990f99c7390d8d23c1106c25a9 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2009-05-06 / The present study has been carried out with the objective of examining the effects of the exchange of conditioned reinforcement (tokens) with the final reinforcement (gifts), on children, by manipulating the delay of points and of exchange in choices between a delayed reinforcement of higher value (self-control) and an immediate reinforcement of lower value (impulsiveness). Such choices have been regularly presented in experimental studies of self-control. This study has been performed in seven children with ages between 8 and 10, who have been submitted to a concurrent-chain schedule with 3 periods in a notebook. In the first period, called period of choice, a VI10-VI10 was programmed to each of the two components presented on the computer screen. The choice of one of them produced, as a consequence, the period of delay of the reinforcement (FT), characterized by the screen becoming black. After that, a new period started in which the acquisition of tokens was possible. All the participants have been submitted to four different experimental conditions. The first two consisted in evaluating the control of dimensions such as delay and magnitude of the reinforcement over the action of responding and were called correspondently evaluation of sensitivity to the delay of the reinforcement and evaluation of sensitivity to the magnitude of the reinforcement. The other two conditions were called point-delay and exchangedelay. The point-delay condition consisted of submitting the participants to three values of delay (30 , 75 e 120 ) between the emission of a response in the period of choice (VI10-VI10) and the period of acquisition of the conditioned reinforcement (tokens which presented on the computer screen). At the end of each experimental session he screen showed the number of tokens received e these tokens were exchanged for the final reinforcement (gifts). The condition of exchange-delay, consisted of submitting the participants to three values of delay (1,7 and 14 days) to perform the exchange the conditioned reinforcement for the gifts. The period of delay after the period of choice was always 1 second in this condition and the tokens were made available after this delay. However, the exchange for the final reinforcements was only performed on the days determined by the contingency in operation, not at the end of the session as in the point-delay condition. The results showed that all the participants were sensitive to the dimensions delay and magnitude of the reinforcement in the evaluation of their sensitivity to them. Considering the conditions of delay of scoring and exchange delay, four amoung the seven participants preferred the alternative of self-control and three preferred the alternative of impulsiveness, in both conditions.

Does a potential friend’s behavior affect men’s and women’s will to be friends? : A study on how adults’ willingness to be friends with an individual is affected depending on whether the individual is impulsive or not

Karlsson, Emelie January 2020 (has links)
The aim with this study was to investigate whether perceived impulsivity of a potential friend can affect men’s and women’s willingness to be friends with that person. The study was conducted with a 2x2 independent measurement with a between groups design. The dependent variable was a self-assessed rating of the will of friendship. The first independent variable was the personality type that was presented in the two different scenarios with two conditions; impulsive and thoughtful. The second independent variable was gender which also had two conditions; men and women. The scenarios was identical except for some language changes depending on the condition. Self-assessed rating of friendship quality and self-assessed rating of personality traits were controlled for. Previous research based on children has shown that impulsive children become more peer rejected and unpopular than other children. By examining how adults’ willingness to be friends with a person is affected, depending on the other person’s behavior, it may be concluded that this rejection even occurs in adulthood. A 2 x 2 independent ANOVA indicated that there was an interaction effect between Gender x Scenario which means that gender and scenario had a great influence on the dependent variable. The study indicated that gender had an impact on the result; women were less likely to be friends with an impulsive person compared to a person that is thoughtful. The two different scenarios did not matter for the men in this study regarding the will to be friends, which indicates that they did not care about if a potential friend was impulsive or thoughtful. This could possibly depend on that women put greater effort in their relationships with their friends and more thought in how a potential friend should behave to a greater extent than men do.

Zerebrale Strukturkorrelate persönlichkeitsbezogener Impulsivität bei Gesunden

Schilling, Christina 10 January 2013 (has links)
Impulsiveness is a pivotal aspect of personality comprising a continuum from normal to deviant occurrence. Trait impulsiveness modulates both behavior in healthy individuals and, in its extreme occurrence, even clinically relevant behavior. So, inhibition disorder is understood to be a characteristic in a number of mental health problems such as addiction disorders, personality disorders and attention deficit/ hyperactivity disorders. Research in the field of personality psychology views impulsiveness as a broad trait underlying all of the different facets of impulsiveness. The interest in the biological correlates of trait impulsiveness has stimulated a growing number of neuroscientific studies. However, non-clinical structural imaging studies on impulsiveness are still rare and their findings very heterogeneous. The present cumulative thesis aims to contribute to an advanced understanding of structural cerebral correlates of trait impulsiveness in healthy individuals. Within the scope of three empirical studies structural data were acquired by means of high-resolution magnetic resonance scans in healthy participants and tested respectively for correlations with trait impulsiveness. Summarizing these present studies’ findings, the results surviving a multiple comparison corrected threshold showed negative correlations between trait impulsiveness and morphometric measurements (cortical thickness, cortical volume) of the left superior frontal cortex, the left middle frontal cortex and the left orbitofrontal cortex. For the first time, associations between impulsiveness as a certain facet of personality and cortical thickness have been shown in a representative healthy sample. The present work provides further insight into structural cerebral substrates of trait impulsiveness considering novel methodological aspects. In summary, the results suggest structures of the left prefrontal cortex play a central role in impulsiveness.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Gisele de Lima Fernandes.pdf: 7708197 bytes, checksum: d2c31d2a5302f3564102245125dc8900 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2005-05-25 / The present experiment is a systematic replication of Ferreira (2002) and aimed to analyze the choice behavior in typical developing children through the simultaneous variation of reinforcer magnitude and delay. The participants, 6 five to six year-old children who studied at a public state pre-school, were exposed to a computer choice task programmed in concurrent-chains schedule. In the initial link, there was a VI 15s schedule independently programmed in each component. Subsequently, in the baseline condition, each component was programmed to produce high and low reinforcer magnitude with the same delay (magnitude baseline) and long and short reinforcer delay with the same magnitude (delay baseline) and, in the experimental condition, there was a simultaneous variation of reinforcer magnitude and delay. There were 4 phases in the experimental condition, in which the short delay was kept at 5s, but the long delay was progressively increased throughout the phases (25s phase 1, 35s phase 2, 45s phase 3, 55s phase 4. The delay period was programmed in Fixed Time (FT). At the end of the Fixed Time, the reinforcement was made available. Tokens in different sizes and colors were used as reinforcers (big green token corresponded to high magnitude and small white token to low magnitude); they were produced in a FR5 schedule and were exchangeable for toys at the end of the session. Five high magnitude tokens were exchangeable for two toys and five low magnitude tokens were exchangeable for one toy. The results show that, although the children responded in the component that produced high reinforcer magnitude over the one that produced low magnitude (magnitude baseline) and in the component that produced a short reinforcer delay over the one that produced long delay (delay baseline) in most the trials of the baseline conditions, when these variables were simultaneously varied, the children responded more frequently in the component that produced higher reinforcer magnitude, although they were delayed, even with the increase up to 55s in delay through the phases. The data were discussed in terms of the possible interference of the procedures adopted and the reinforcing properties of the tokens, toys, and the response of using the computer over the choice and self-control behavior.

Alterações nas funções executivas, impulsividade e agressividade em indivíduos dependentes de crack / Impairments in executive functions, impulsiviness and agressiviness in crack dependents

Teixeira, Vanina Papini Góes 05 December 2014 (has links)
Even though crack use is nowadays a major public health problem, there is a few scientific data about executive functioning déficits and interferences on impulsive and aggressive behavior of the exposure to the psychoactive substance. The aim of this research was to evaluate the existence of deficits in executive functions in crack users and in ex-users, in abstinence for sixty daysat least, after a minimum period of sixty days of abstinence compared to healthy controls. We also tried to find out to identify the levels of impulsivity and aggression in individuals who used crack. It was conducted a quantitative quasi-experimental study. Thus, a sociodemographic questionnaire was applied that allowed the identification of the subject and the crack’s standard use, after that the neuropsychological assessment was administered, which enables the identification of performancein scales investigating executive function, then the levels impulsiveness and aggression assessment. Was used standardized instruments, including the BETA-III (estimated IQ), BAI (anxiety assessment), the BDI (for depression assessment), the BROWN’s scale (assessment of attention deficit), the BIS-11 (evaluation of impulsivity), the questionnaire BUSS-PERRY (assessment of aggressiveness), the Stroop Test (evaluation of attention, inhibitory control, and flexibility), the WCST (evaluation of flexibility) and IGT (evaluation of decision making). The instruments were administered to 102 subjects divided into three distinct groups with harmonic distribution, the G1 group was formed by 34 crack users, the G2 group by 34 abstinents crack users and the G3 group, formed by 34 controls. The subjects were matched for age, years of education, socioeconomic status and IQ. The subjects of G1 group, the crack’s users, performed worse than ex-users (p <0.05) and than controls (p <0.05) in the executive functioning assessment and higher levels of impulsivity and aggression; subjects from group G2 performed worse than subjects in the control group, G3, but better than the crack user group, G1. The results indicate that crack use is associated with deficits in executive functions, and has interference in high levels of impulsivity and aggression, problems associated with prefrontal brain regions. Identification of neuropsychological impairments, as well as the impulsive and aggressive behavior in individuals with experience with the crack may be useful for developing more effective treatment programs, thus reducing the high levels of non-adherence to treatment and high relapses rates.

Chia, Camille 03 1900 (has links)
Reciprocal altruism, the most probable mechanism for cooperation among unrelated individuals, can be modelled as a Prisoner’s Dilemma. This game predicts that cooperation should evolve whenever the players, who expect to interact repeatedly, adopt conditional strategies. Yet, experimental data suggest that reciprocity would be rare in animal societies, maybe because animals, compared to humans, are very impulsive. Several studies examining the effect of impulsiveness on cooperation have indeed found a negative impact of temporal discounting. On the other hand, the role of impulsive action, another facet of impulsiveness, remains unexplored, though it could also impede cooperation by affecting the capacity of individuals to flexibly adjust their behaviour to their partner’s decision. To address this hypothesis, we conducted an experiment with zebra finches (Taenyopigia guttata) that were paired assortatively with respect to their level of impulsive action and then played an Alternating Prisoner’s Dilemma. As anticipated, we found that mutual cooperation occurred more frequently between self-controlled partners than between impulsive ones, a difference that was caused by differences in the strategy used by both types of individuals. Specifically, self-controlled individuals used a Generous TFT strategy, as predicted by theory, whereas impulsive birds chose to cooperate with a fixed probability, which was independent of their partner’s previous decision. If the inability of impulsive individuals to use reactive strategies are due to their reduced working memory capacity, our findings might contribute to explaining interspecific differences in cooperative behaviour.

Influence of social media advertising on consumer behavior : A quantitative study in Germany and Sweden

Marschall, Jascha January 2022 (has links)
Social media sites and platforms have been on the rise for the last decade. Especially sincethe start of the still on-going Covid-19 pandemic it reached an all time high. Over half of theworld’s population is using social media. Everyone knows Facebook, Instagram, YouTube,TikTok, Snapchat, and many more. This fact has not gone unnoticed by companies as theyincreasingly integrate social media into their portfolio. Social media advertising is nowadayseverywhere. There is not a single site without any ads. Regardless the research about it is stillvery scarce. This master thesis will investigate the influence of social media advertising on consumerbehavior. More detailed it will focus on how consumers react to advertisements. For thispurpose, a quantitative survey has been conducted. The base for this survey is a developedconceptual framework based on the Elaboration Likelihood Model and the Value-Belief-Norm theory model. Further factors of the survey include different values and beliefs onwhich the analysis is depending. The main value playing a role in this study is sociallyresponsible consumption behavior. This value tackles how much consumers care about theenvironment and the human society. Simply spoken, how sustainable and how social do theybehave. Furthermore, three beliefs have been chosen in tandem with this value: Self -confidence, impulsiveness, and interpersonal/group influence. All are believed to have animpact on how consumers are perceiving advertisements they see on social media. Eachconnection between the value, the beliefs, and the reaction to advertisements will be tested.Believed connections are between the sustainability value of the consumers and the threebeliefs as well as towards the video. Further, it is believed that the beliefs will have an effecton the reaction to advertisements from consumers. My study will indicate how companies cantake advantage of advertisements to gain more followers on social media and sell moreproducts. The outcome of this study will present a clear picture of the role of sustainable andsocially responsible behavior towards ads on social media as well as the impact of beliefs.

Autocontrole: um estudo sobre o efeito da variação simultânea da magnitude e do atraso do reforço e da possibilidade de realização de atividades distrativas / Self-control: a study on the effect of simultaneous variation of reinforcer magnitude and delay and the possibility of engaging in a distracting activity

Made available in DSpace on 2016-04-29T13:18:05Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 Mariana.pdf: 680523 bytes, checksum: 436d21a6458ea46f6906d902b0849462 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2007-05-03 / The present study was aimed at analyzing child self-control through the simultaneous variation of magnitude and delay of reinforcement, with and without the possibility of engaging in a distracting activity during the delay of reinforcement. The participants, 11 children between the ages of five to eleven, with and without a diagnosis of ADHD, were presented with a computer task in a concurrent-chain schedule. The consequence produced by the response in the first link initiated the second link, and a new response, on the same component selected previously, produced, in VI 15s, a new consequence and the beginning of the period of delay of reinforcement (FT) with or without the distracting activities. The third link begun right after the end of the period of delay. The participants were submitted to two baseline conditions: one to evaluate the control that the magnitude of reinforcement dimension exerted over the response; and another to evaluate the control exerted by the delay of reinforcement dimension. In the experimental condition, there was simultaneous variation of magnitude and delay of reinforcement, with or without the possibility of engaging in distracting activities during the delay of reinforcement period. This variation involved four phases: in one of the components the magnitude and delay of reinforcement period remained constant (10s and 1 token); and in the other component, both were gradually increased (30s and 5 tokens, Phase 1; 60s and 10 tokens, Phase 2; 1min 30s and 15 tokens, Phase 3; e 2 min and 20 tokens, Phase 4). After that, the participants were submitted to a new condition, similar to the previous one, but without the distracting activities. Such condition was introduced from Phase 4. If the child reached the ending criterion for the phase (answering in ten consecutive attempts on one same component), the program was ended; if not, the child would go back to a previous phase, and thus successively. In all conditions, at the end of the period of delay, the period of access to reinforcement became effective. Tokens, represented by green traces on the computer screen, were used as reinforcers. Tokens were earned on a CRF schedule, and exchanged for toys at the end of the session. At the beginning of each session, participants established a specific value to each of the objects used as potential reinforcers. The maximum value was of 250 tokens and, gradually, by 10s, this value diminished till a minimum of 10 tokens. The hypothesis was that such values could indicate the potential reinforcing value of each object, so that the most valued reinforcer had the highest price (250 tokens) and the least valued reinforcer had the lowest price (10 tokens). At the end of each session, the participant checked the number of tokens he got, on the computer screen, and exchanged them for items he could buy, according to the value the participant himself had stipulated. The results showed that, in the phase of magnitude baseline, in the majority of the attempts, the children answered on the component that produced high magnitude, but in the delay baseline, the majority answered on the component that produced greater delay of reinforcement. When there was simultaneous manipulation of those variables, the participants answered more frequently on the component that produced higher reinforcement magnitude, in spite of greater delay of reinforcement, even with the gradual increase of the delay through the phases, up to 2 min. Results are discussed in relation to the number of responses emitted, in the presence and in the absence of such activities, and their possible reinforcing value / O presente estudo foi realizado com o objetivo analisar o autocontrole de crianças a partir da variação simultânea da magnitude e do atraso do reforço, com e sem a possibilidade de realização de atividades distrativas durante o período de atraso do reforço.
