A walk with Catherine and Jane : the exposure of gothic conventions in Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights and Charlotte Brontë’s Jane EyreMoura, Caroline Navarrina de January 2017 (has links)
This thesis consists of a reading of Emily Brontë‘s Wuthering Heights (1847) and Charlotte Brontë‘s, Jane Eyre (1847), focusing on the body of Gothic conventions they hold, and the ways in which such conventions interfere with the movements of the two female protagonists, Catherine and Jane, each struggling to fit into their space, while trying to accomplish their desires. Although the two works are structurally different in several ways, they share an intense Gothic atmosphere and its consequent psychological density, which influences the mental frame of the two protagonists. In order to explore the relations among the structural, social and psychological aspects involved, a reading of the novels has been conducted, focusing on the presence of Gothic elements that stand for the challenges Catherine and Jane are bound to face. Literary critic Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick‘s work The Coherence of Gothic Conventions (1986) is used to identify and contextualise the capacity of Gothic imagery to reveal the weight of social conventions upon the natural process of growth of the two protagonists. Inasmuch as the pressure becomes intensified by the rules of gender settlements, the concept of Female Gothic is explored, as presented by Professor Carol Margaret Davison. Particular attention is paid to the imagery related to space – psychological space for the protagonists to grow emotionally, and physical space, as determinant of where and how they must move. Here the theoretical support is offered by Gaston Bachelard‘s poetics of the primitive elements, unveiling the body of images presented in the two novels. The conclusion indicates the solutions found by Catherine Earnshaw and by Jane Eyre to find their way and overcome the obstacles they meet; with comments on how revealing Gothic imagery is of the social conventions it represents.

In this thesis, we study diophantine geometry problems on projective varieties and commutative algebraic groups, by means of tools from Arakelov theory. A central notion in this work is the slope theory for hermitian vector bundles, introduced by Bost in the 1990s. More precisely, we work with its generalization in an adelic setting, inspired by Zhang and developed by Gaudron. This dissertation contains two major lines. The first one is devoted to the study of a remarkable theorem due to Faltings and Wüstholz, which generalizes Schmidt’s subspace theorem. We first reformulate the proof of Faltings and Wüstholz using the formalism of adelic vector bundles and the adelic slope method. We then establish some effective variants of the theorem, and we deduce an effective generalization of Liouville’s theorem for closed points on a projective variety defined over a number field. In particular, we give an explicit upper bound for the height of the points satisying a Liouville-type inequality. In the second part, we establish new measures of linear independence of logarithms over a commutative algebraic group. We focus our study on the rational case. Our approach combines Baker’s method (revisited by Philippon and Waldschmidt) with arguments from the slope theory. More importantly, we introduce a new argument to deal with the periodic case, inspired by previous works of Bertrand and Philippon. This method does not require the use of an extrapolation on derivations in the sense of Philippon-Waldschmidt. In this way, we are able to remove an important hypothesis in several theorems of Gaudron establishing lower bounds for linear forms in logarithms.

Produits eulériens motiviques / Motivic Euler productsBilu, Margaret 28 November 2017 (has links)
The goal of this thesis is the study of the motivic height zeta function associated to the problem of counting curves on equivariant compactifications of vector groups, solving in chapter 6 the motivic analogue of Manin's conjecture for such varieties. The motivic height zeta function coming from this counting problem is rewritten in a convenient way using a Poisson summation formula proved in chapter 5, and which generalises Hrushovski and Kazhdan's motivic Poisson formula. Each term is then expressed as a motivic Euler product, the definition and properties of the latter being established in chapter 3. The convergence of these Euler products must be understood for a weight topology which we introduce in the fourth chapter and which relies both on Saito's theory of mixed Hodge modules and on a motivic measure on the Grothendieck ring of varieties with exponentials, constructed in chapter 2 using the notion of motivic vanishing cycles. We deduce from this a description of the asymptotic of a positive proportion of the coefficients of the Hodge-Deligne polynomial of the moduli spaces of curves on the given equivariant compactification, when the degree goes to infinity.

Geofyzikální metody začlenění lokálních výškových systémů do celosvětového výškového systému / Geophysical methods of integration of the local vertical datums into World Height SystemBuday, Michal Unknown Date (has links)
One of the main problems of current physical geodesy is the unification of local height systems and the creation of the unified global vertical reference frame, whose primary definition constant will be the geopotential value of W0 on the level surface, such as geoid. This problem encounters several pitfalls, such as different types of physical heights used in the world, ways of eliminating the effects of tides on the shape of the Earth's body. The first parts of the thesis describe the theoretical foundations concerning the description of the Earth's gravitational field, the basics of height theory and the solution of the boundary value problems used in geodesy, together with the solution of the Hotine's and Stokes' integral by convolution. Due to the fact that the data of directly measured gravity acceleration for the territory of the Czechia and the Slovakia are not freely available with sufficient coverage, these data were replaced by gravity disturbances calculated from the Global Gravity Model of the Earth. To improve the data obtained from geopotential models, so-called residual terrain modelling was used. It is a spectral combination of gravity field models with relevant Earth's gravitational field quantities, which are obtained by modeling from a digital terrain model and a height model that represents the mean value of topography. The combination of these data consists of calculating those frequencies of the gravitational signal from the digital terrain model that are not a part of the signal obtained from geopotential models that in general have a lower spatial resolution. Two methods were used to connect the local height systems of the Czechia and the Slovakia. The first method was to use the solution of Molodensky's problem. The second method used is originally a method developed to test geopotential models. Both methods were tested on a set of measuring points (GNSS/levelling points).

Katalogizace asynchronních motorů / Classification of asynchronous motorsČala, Václav January 2009 (has links)
This diploma thesis deals with a creation of a “Classification Document” of asynchronous motors with a short-circuit armature with axial heights of 355, 400, 450, 500, and 560 mm. Furthermore, it is concerned with a creation of an integral design documentation for the production and assembly of these motors at the company TES VSETÍN, s.r.o. By writing this diploma thesis I would like to achieve a simplification of communication with the customers during the processing of asynchronous motors orders and to speed up the processing of asynchronous motors orders not only in the design department but also the complete technologic preparation of the production which will surely be provided by this integrated documentation.

To determine the health and climatic impacts of aerosols, the quantification of their precise concentrations, their chemical composition and their size distribution is needed. Among the several aerosols emitted from anthropogenic and natural activities, fire emissions and their transport are still a concern. This work aims to improve the characterization of these fires, to allow a better representation in models. To cover different types of fires, the study focuses on case studies in the Euro-Mediterranean region and in Australia. First, the information needed to compute fire emission fluxes is analyzed: the burnt area and injection heights are quantified using satellite observations. MODIS observations shows that the burnt area in Europe is mainly composed, on average, of cropland (70%), whereas savannah and shrubland fires are preponderant in Australia (50% and 40%). However, strong spatial heterogeneities are noticed, with by example forest fires representing 13% of the total observed burned area in Portugal and 65% in South-West of Australia. Using MISR and CALIOP observations of plume heights, it is shown that injection heights are mainly concentrated near the surface and at about 2000 m of altitude for the two regions. The highest differences are noticed above 4000 m, with 4,6-6,4% of emissions in Europe and 8,9-11% in Australia...

The Romantic Earth: Narratological Framing in Wuthering HeightsDahlgren, Hilda January 2023 (has links)
This essay deals with the narrative structure of Emily Brontë’s 1847 Wuthering Heights. This famously dark and tumultuous novel has two narrators, the just-arrived country tenant Lockwood and Mrs. Dean, a housekeeper with a long story to tell. Mrs. Dean’s narrative is situated within and framed by Lockwood’s as he is the primary and she the secondary narrator. The concept of framing is of interest for this essay in several ways. Firstly, it considers how Lockwood as the intended recipient of Mrs. Dean’s narrative causes it to unfold the way it does, and secondly how both of their narratives combine to frame other characters in the novel, the most famous ones being Catherine and Heathcliff. The essay argues that both the narrators can be termed discordant, narrators who are “biased or confused” (Cohn 2000, 307) about the story they are telling. This is because they are similar in the way of wanting to suppress strong emotion while the characters whose lives they narrate, Heathcliff and Catherine, are strongly emotional characters. This causes the narration to remain distant from the subjects it concerns. Heathcliff and Catherine are further linked to two Romantic themes, personal authenticity in love and the high status of passion. Mrs. Dean in particular gives rise to Christian sentiments, and the essay finds a conflict between the Christian striving for a final end in the form of heaven and the Romantic high value placed on earthly striving in and of itself. It argues that the discordant narratory framing and dissimilarity of Heathcliff and Catherine to the narrators allow them to become more Romantic, and that the novel finally constitutes a love letter to the earth without God, with its abundance of human striving. The essay uses narratological terminology adapted from Bal (2017) to describe different levels of narrative, namely narrative text, story, and fabula.
