Exploring international students experiences of studying in UK universities : a narrative inquiry of Nigerian students

Eze, Ogbonnia Eze January 2014 (has links)
This thesis is a narrative inquiry of 10 international students from Nigeria studying in selected UK universities. The thesis draws from emerging discourse on international student’s overseas experiences and extends this knowledge by analysing these experiences from the framework of trauma, individuation, spiritual emergency and the African initiation process, in an attempt to gain an in depth knowledge of Nigerian students’ experiences of studying abroad in the current period. The previous understanding of international students’ experiences from culture shock framework does not account for how their difficult experiences affect their psychological, emotional, physical, social and spiritual wellbeing, so this thesis have reconceptualised these problems and explained them in more depth using the trauma framework and contributed to knowledge in this area. It is an exploratory qualitative study and data for the study was gathered through narrative interviewing. The narrative or story telling method applied in this study enabled the researcher to capture how the participants construct meaning to their lived experiences. The narrative inquiry is chosen because it gives voice to silenced group of people like the Nigerian students whose experiences are not heard. Narratives gathered were textually analysed to evidence the narrators’ unique individual experiences. Findings revealed that the participants had experiences that coincided with trauma experiences such as feeling of helplessness, disorganization, confusion, depression, sleeplessness and disorientation, lack of concentration and supressed emotion as they lived and studied in UK. The thesis concluded from the findings of the study that there is resemblance of trauma experiences in the participants’ stories. The study recommends that support was necessary when they are in UK, while adequate information should be provided before the students sojourn to the UK since most of their difficulties were as a result of failed expectations from their preconceptions about studying in the UK before they arrived.

Observatório Periocular / Observatório Periocular

Kawassaki, Luciana Ohira 20 October 2010 (has links)
This work focuses on the relation between quality and matter in luminousdynamic image, accomplished from Visual Poetics point of view. Considering the perceptive states and the affective passages as reflection object, it intended to establish relations between different expressions of space, time, duration, consistency, opacity and transmutation in videographic medium. Six experiments are presented in videos by the variation of points of view in relation to an object. As a result, parallax vision became a method and a guide for the poetic adventure of the periocular observatory. The fable of landscapes, characters, scenes, creates vicinity zones between beings from various kinds, capable of dissolving crystallized forms and recreating, everywhere, an inventive vision of sensation blocks in endless metamorphosis. Therefore this research traces the conceptual plan which the works project, reflect and multiply.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Isabel Victoria Galleguillos Jungk.pdf: 2753271 bytes, checksum: f62f3df48a834ff1fac0b59c49adc016 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2017-03-21 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / By the emergence of the Internet of Things as a physical extension of the network, characterized by the interconnection of intelligent, autonomous and sentient objects, man has lost the position of absolute master in those interrelations to be another actor in the theater of the intricate transformations that take place, evincing the need to rethink the ontological status of both human and technical beings. In the scope of Speculative Realism, the proposal of an Object Oriented Ontology by Graham Harman arose, claiming an ontology which does not depart from pre-established hierarchies between different types of beings. However, despite the undeniable value of the contributions that this movement has made, such as the intense questioning of the subject-object relationship, the importance given to the relation and the disregard of representational issues stricto sensu, such contributions do not seem to suffice for building a philosophy on a truly realistic ground. In this context, it is raised the question about the possibility of the existence of a common denominator between human beings and technical entities, which would be capable of grounding a realistic ontology devoid of pre-established hierarchies. In the present study, it is hypothesized that this gap can be fulfilled by the ontologies elaborated in the works of Gilbert Simondon and Charles Sanders Peirce, authors whose philosophies stand out for metaphysics of an eminently logic and scientific nature, but which do not yet appear in the theoretical framework of contemporary realism in a significant manner, pointing to the relevance of this research.

Life and the sources of normativity: a natural history of concept

Souza, Herivelto Pereira de 16 March 2010 (has links)
The philosophical position called semantic externalism is characterized by the thesis according to which the individuation of the content of mental states must make reference to traits that cannot be placed inside the sphere usually circumscribed by the very notion of mind. Such a thesis implies, anyway, that the supposed interiority of the psychological life is not enough to make intelligible the conditions that conceptual thought requires. If factors external to individuals are seen as entertaining a decisive contribution in the very determination of their mental content, that is makes it necessary to understand in what sense mind and world can be taken as intrinsically related. The theoretical bet of the present thesis is that only a conception of individuation free from the substantialist commitments can provide a fertile ontological ground to an externalist theory of the concept. In this sense, the notion of triangulation, that Donald Davidson has forged to explain some crucial elements in the genesis of conceptuality, is read from the standpoint of philosophies that highlight the decisive character of life as fundamental referentiality of the concept itself. So, it is in the vital order that some deadlocks concerning the origins of normativity and the inner outer duality structural opposition under which from a long time subjectivity is thought upon, are dissolved.

Evolutionary Trends in the Individuation and Polymorphism of Colonial Marine Invertebrates

Venit, Edward Peter 10 May 2007 (has links)
All life is organized hierarchically. Lower levels, such as cells and zooids, are nested within higher levels, such as multicellular organisms and colonial animals. The process by which a higher-level unit forms from the coalescence of lower-level units is known as “individuation”. Individuation is defined by the strength of functional interdependencies among constituent lower-level units. Interdependency results from division of labor, which is evidenced in colonial metazoans as zooid polymorphism. As lower-level units specialize for certain tasks, they become increasing dependant on the rest of the collective to perform other tasks. In this way, the evolution of division of labor drives the process of individuation. This study explores several ways in which polymorphism evolves in colonial marine invertebrates such as cnidarians, bryozoans, and urochordates. A previous study on the effect of environmental stability on polymorphism is revisted and reinterpreted. A method for quantifying colonial-level individuation by measuring the spatial arrangement of polymorphic zooids is proposed and demonstrated. Most significantly, a comparison across all colonial marine invertebrate taxa reveals that polymorphism only appears in those colonial taxa with moderately to strongly compartmentalized zooids. Weakly compartmentalized and fully compartmentalized taxa are universally monomorphic. This pattern is seen across all colonial marine invertebrate taxa and is interpreted as a “rule” governing the evolution of higher-level individuation in the major taxa of colonial marine invertebrates. The existence of one rule suggests that there may be others, including rules that transcend levels of biological hierarchy. The identification of such rules would strongly suggest that new levels in the hierarchy of life evolve by a universal pattern that is independent of the type of organism involved. / Dissertation
