IN FASHION WE TRUST : Exploring the role of internationalization as an entrepreneurial process in the fashion industry

Grip, Charlotte January 2016 (has links)
Fashion companies struggle with internationalization, as do many retailers, but nevertheless they need to take action and cross borders in order to increase their revenue. A strong focus on the entrepreneurial capabilities of a company is suggested to enhance the process and the model of internationalization as the entrepreneurial process is addressed as an established tool for internationalization. The aim of this paper is to investigate what role internationalization as an entrepreneurial process model plays in the fashion industry context. To do this, a qualitative study with five fashion companies and four trade organizations is conducted. A theoretical framework on the network internationalization process model guides the data collection consisting of several interviews with owners, CEOs and managers. The findings indicate that entrepreneurial capabilities, networks and being able to exploit contingencies play an important role for internationalization in the fashion industry. I conclude that internationalization as an entrepreneurial process can be applied in the fashion industry context.

Cunha, Dileine Amaral da January 2016 (has links)
This thesis aimed to investigate the Ciencia sem Fronteiras Program initial performance in the nurturing of Brazilian graduates from Australian universities, in relation to the Program’s relevance in terms of professional development and perspective of future. Australia was ranked third in the list of countries receiving Brazilian students holding scholarships in the sandwich undergraduate modality. The program is current and high-priority and its continuity as public policy, through Bill No. 798, 2015, is pending in the Brazilian Senate. Created on December 13th, 2011 through Decree n. 7642 of the Presidency, the Program fits into Brazil’s need to internationalize higher education, somehow following the example of developed and cultured countries, in order to reduce the gap between Brazil and the high-income nations. The thesis was divided into three parts, being the first the introduction, followed by the academic-scientific production composed by three articles and in the third part the final considerations. The first article shows the importance of the Program in the Brazilian higher education internationalization process. The results of sending students to Australian universities, as well as features of that country’s higher education system are presented and analyzed in the light of the recommendations made to the first evaluation of the Program conducted by the Brazilian Senate, as well as some critical analysis made by the Brazilian academics. The methodology adopted in this article involved exploratory, documentary and bibliographic research, including consultation of documents prepared by international organizations and the Australian and Brazilian governments. The second and third articles analyze the Program performance to test the thesis’ hypothesis according to which the program was important to nurture Brazilian students because it provided relevant educational experiences both in the academic arena and in terms of life and study itinerary. To that, eleven Australian and Latin-American experts of different backgrounds in the higher education internationalization process were interviewed. The final activities reports of 2,747 graduates and institutional coordinators from 120 Brazilian higher education institutions that answered the questionnaire of 641 students were also analyzed. Data on student’s academic performance were also collected. In these articles, the methodology involved qualitative and exploratory research with semi-structured interviews to collect data from the experts, which were construed based on the content analysis proposed by Lawrence Bardin. The final reports’ quantitative data were approached with descriptive statistics. Results showed that the Program made the Brazilian science and education known internationally, allowing important changes on personal and academic lives of students, who developed new abilities and keep in contact with research and knowledge networks. Results also showed that most of the obstacles arisen throughout the program were related to weak planning. Thus, it becomes necessary to make changes that allow the continued advancement of the higher education internationalization process, which has already started on behalf of the Brazilian development such as: priority graduate courses, attract more foreign researchers, comprise only better-prepared students, enable greater involvement of the Brazilian higher education institutions, among others.

Exposição cambial: o impacto do câmbio nas ações das empresas brasileiras internacionalizadas / Foreign exchange exposure: the impact of the exchange on the shares of Brazilian internationalized companies

Mariana Pereira Bonfim 08 January 2014 (has links)
The increasing internationalization of companies from emerging economies, in a context of financial globalization of the World economy, has motivated this research, which has as its main goal to analyze the impact of the exchange rate fluctuations on stock returns of main Brazilian international corporations (classified according to the Dom Cabral Foundation annual ranking), covering the period between 2000 and 2012. In addition, this work intended to describe the internationalization process itself of those companies. For this, it was structured a descriptive and quantitative research, using the statistical method of linear regression. Among the main research findings it can be mentioned the non-existent correlation between the fluctuations in exchange rates and the variation in the shares returns of the 28 most internationalized Brazilian companies analyzed. This situation suggests that other variables are more impacting on the shares return. It was also verified that most of the Brazilian companies has begun their internationalization process by investing on production chains abroad, what it is not usual, rather than exporting, merging or acquiring with local companies abroad.

Efeitos da internacionalização sobre os recursos estratégicos

Gonçalves, Roberto Birch January 2009 (has links)
The process of globalization and the internationalization of companies place them ahead of new challenges and of situations of adaptation of intense competitiveness. Organizational strategies and resources are affected by the internationalization process, affecting the organization path and its resources; creating a discomfort on daily basis for these companies and forcing a re-arrangement and a constant search for productive stability. The present research proposes a framework which identifies and analyzes the modifications in the strategic resources resulting from the process of internationalization of a company that, throughout time, look to contribute for the understanding of these factors which are studied through the Resourcebased View theory. The analysis of the different contemporary models and theories, together with the results obtained in the empirical research, allows concluding that in the studied companies, the strategic resources have suffered modifications, altering their value characteristics, rarity, difficult imitation and difficult substitution during their process of internationalization. These modifications had been promoted by historical decisions and by the entrance of new knowledge but, to enhance any success of the companies, their strategic resources they must be worked out, on one hand, through learning, instrumented by an out-in absorptive capacity and, on the other hand, by historical events, that can strengthen or weaken the strategic character of the resources. Although it is not possible to generalize the analysis and the considerations from the cases, they will be able to furnish insights for companies who are or intend to enter in an internationalization process.

Casara, Daniel Rodrigo January 2009 (has links)
Discussions about globalization and about business opportunities that arise from it in different markets are no longer any new subject. The way that companies have been acting in this scenario is dictating the competitiveness that they have to face their global competitors. Brazilian companies, mainly in the case of the industry, don’t have a very comfortable situation when compared with foreign organizations, especially if coming from the East. The Brazilian production base still not strong enough to maintain the competitiveness of the domestic industry, and Brazil’s export base is still composed by commodities for years, both agricultural and mineral. In order to increase its presence in the global market, many companies are seeking to establish their operation in other countries that could provide better market conditions. Stemac S/A Grupos Geradores is a Brazilian family owned company that has only one production plant, based in Porto Alegre (RS). This study proposes the internationalization of Stemac through the implementation of a business unit in China as a way of trying to increase the export participation in the company’s business. Through interviews with companies that already have operations in China and class entities, this proposed study of case conducted a survey of the possible conditions and scenarios for the installation of the company in the country. Besides, it was also made a research inside Stemac of what would be the most appropriate business model that could better align the target markets and its product line with the company’s organizational culture. According the options that were studied it is possible to suggest to Stemac to make this move towards to settle a base in China in order to ensure greater competitiveness and bigger global market-share.

Melo, Germana Tavares de January 2010 (has links)
The globalization phenomenon associated with the one of economic liberalization has broadened the discussion about the internationalization of companies in Brazil. In order to act in this international market, companies should turn their efforts not only to the external environment, but also to the inner, more specifically to their resources. Moreover, considering that this environment is dynamic, the resources will go through a reconfiguration process in order to track these changes. However, there are few studies about internationalization with emphasis on resources, even less those which adopt the concept of resource used in this research as being dynamic assets, dependent on its use and capable of enacting multiple schemas. From this perspective, resources are created and recreated through actions, enabling actors to enact schemas. This process was named as resourcing. From a literature review on the internationalization of enterprises as well as about the internal resources, including this new conceptualization, it was elaborated a framework to analyze the reconfiguration of resources along the process of companies’ internationalization. It was developed a case study at Weg S.A., one of the largest industrial electric motor manufacturer. Primary data were collected through semi-structured interviews (in depth) with the marketing chief and the marketing analyst of Weg International Division and the main secondary data were collected while visiting the Weg Museum and by reading the book that celebrates the company's 40 year anniversary. The results point that the framework used demonstrated to be a valid mechanism to observe and structure how the resources reconfiguration occurs along the process of companies’ internationalization. They also show that the moments which provoked changes on the companies’ trajectory made Weg to adopt a new entry mode on the international market, causing alterations on the resources. Apart from that, Weg began to emphasize its intangible assets only after some years, fact that confirms the difficulty in evaluating, transferring and imitating this kind of resource and because of this Weg should keep on using its resources, especially, the intangible ones as the great majority of competitive advantages developed nowadays comes from a better usage of intangible resources (IDRIS et al., 2003). Thus, this research could serve both as a basis for analyzing other companies which want to internationalize, replicating the framework of analysis proposed, and to contribute to the development of studies concerning companies’ internationalization and resources reconfiguration.

Research on the Development of Multinational Investment Banks in China

January 2015 (has links)
abstract: This study investigates three issues that are relevant for the development of multinational investment banks in China. The first is about the domestic market conditions that are necessary for a country to develop multinational investment banks. The second issue is about the degree to which China has met these conditions. The last issue focuses on the potential strategies Chinese investment banks can undertake to become multinational corporations. To address the first issue, I draw an important distinction between international investment banks and multinational investment banks. For an international investment bank to be regarded as a multinational, I propose that it must have a strong presence (i.e., holding at least one percent of the market share) in at least two of the seven major capital markets in the world. Using this criterion, I identify 25 multinational investment banks. I then analyze their home countries’ domestic market conditions and propose that the following six factors are important to the development of multinational investment banks: the size of the home country’s gross domestic product (GDP), the total capitalization of its domestic security market, the number of its Global 500 firms, the volume of its foreign direct investment (FDI), the internationalization of its currency, and the openness of its capital market to foreign investors. By comparisons, I find that China’s domestic market conditions are comparable to the home countries of multinational investment banks with respect to the size of GDP, total market capitalization, the number of Global 500 firms, and the volume of FDI. What China lags behind are the internationalization of currency and the openness of capital market to foreign investors. Given the current trends of development, it is very likely that China will be able to catch up on the latter within ten years, thus meeting all the conditions necessary for the development of multinational investment banks. Based on the above findings, I suggest that Chinese investment banks seize this historical opportunity, speed up the internationalization of their businesses, and learn from the experiences of global industry leaders to become truly multinational corporations. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Business Administration 2015

“As the twig is bent, so grows the tree” : A study of the influence of Swedish corporate culture in managing ethical dilemmas in Brazil

Roman, Linnéa, Tjäder, Lovisa, Todorovska, Marina January 2018 (has links)
Throughout history, the Latin American region has faced inequalities in the form of ethical issues that derive from institutional corruption, bribery and negligence. Today, the region is facing an ongoing shift in terms of emerging market potential, whilst influences from global trends are establishing roots. The developed opportunities have earned attention from foreign actors, whereas the prospect of the Brazilian market has received considerate devotion from Swedish companies, that are considering Brazil as a major entry point into the region. The historical influences in relation to cultural differences presents challenges in the management of business relations, as well as in the ethical dilemmas that may arise. The purpose of this thesis is to obtain an understanding concerning the significance within the relation between Swedish corporate culture and facing ethical dilemmas in international business, with the particular focus of the Brazilian market. This thesis is based on a qualitative study in the form of interviews with five represented Swedish companies, in order to gain deeper understanding of the complexity and intangibility behind the corporate cultural phenomenon, as well as related experiences with the concentrated market. Moreover, this study is based on a deductive research, given that the specific relation between Swedish corporate culture and managing ethical issues in Brazil is quite unexplored. Thus, it felt required to gain relevant insight prior to this research. The theoretical foundation of this thesis is based on a literature review that is divided into acknowledged concepts of internationalization, culture and business ethics. In turn, the theories discussed are relevant to establish a connection in the form of a synthesis that makes sense of the complexity and intangibility that is surrounding the topic of ethical dilemmas, due to differentiating cultural influences on the notion of business ethics and its implementation. The literature review has in turn acted as substance in the analyzing of the presented empirical data gathered through interviews, where the empirical findings are first displayed case by case and followed by a cross-case analysis. The outcome of this research argues that the corporate cultural values have a significant role in the way Swedish companies can use ethics as a notion of simultaneously shaping the outside perceptions, based on inside operations. Networks are further emphasized as an aspect of transition in the relation between Swedish companies and the Brazilian market, where dilemmas occur when disturbed by differentiating cultural influences. In terms of profitability and long-term sustainability, the extent of implementation where ethical values go, can act as a reinforced tool in terms of creating attractive visibility on the international market.
