Pollination ecosystem services and the urban environment

Birkin, Linda Joy January 2018 (has links)
Insect pollination is a vital ecosystem service, essential for both wild and domesticated plants, yet to-date there are no standardised national schemes to monitor its status. Thus this PhD focused on assessment of pollination provision in UK urban green spaces, using a combination of citizen science and field/laboratory methods. Each of the following thesis chapters considers a specific pollination-related theme: The need for pollination. Demonstrating how much gardeners need insect pollination is important to underpin public support for pollinator conservation. During 2014-2015, online questionnaires were used to collect information about the crops grown in domestic green spaces and gardening practices used. Participants highly valued ‘growing their own', and three of five crops grown by the majority (tomatoes, apples, strawberries) have high requirements for insect pollination. A ‘garden shop calculator' spreadsheet was also tested (positively) as a quick way to calculate the equivalent bought-value of garden crops and the proportion directly attributable to insect actions. Assessment of pollination provision. Citizen science volunteers undertook a simple direct pollination experiment (exclusion, hand pollination, local), requiring treatment randomisation and accurate yield recording. The main ‘Bees ‘n Beans' projects used Vicia faba to monitor bumblebee pollination, detecting no national deficit during 2014-2016. This suggests that the domestic pollination needs of V. faba are currently met, and that urban populations of long-tongued bumblebees are sufficient to provide it. The potential of using other plants to cover wider pollinator populations was also explored, identifying Allium hollandicum as suitable. The effects of companion planting. Using tomato plants to examine whether co-planting crops with flowering plants boosts pollination provision (‘magnet species' effects), or distracts insects. Provided plants were hosted in volunteered gardens and school grounds in Brighton in 2015 & 2016. No effect (improved or detrimental) of co-flowering plants was found on tomato yields at either site type. Using citizen science to monitor pollination services. This chapter combined findings from other chapters and a final questionnaire, which focused on participants' motivations and willingness to make behavioural changes after taking part. It concludes that the projects have demonstrated volunteers' ability and willingness to follow experimental protocols under guidance, to collect meaningful data at otherwise-impractical geographical scales. Suggested protocol. This details the finalised Bees ‘n Beans approach and how it relates to other potential pollination monitoring methods. I propose that this style of project is suitable for incorporation into national monitoring scheme development.

Spiralist Interconnection and Environmental Consciousness in Caribbean Literature

Zweifel, Aara 27 October 2016 (has links)
This dissertation addresses the politics of interrelation between living beings and the natural world within Caribbean literature, and the underlying dangers inherent in modes of existence that deny such interrelation. Spiralism is a chaotic and pluralist literary movement emerging from Haiti in the 1960s, and this project features René Philoctète’s Spiralist novel Le Peuple des terres mêlées (1989) as its literary center, joined with two other Caribbean novels: Jacques Roumain’s Gouverneurs de la rosée (1944), and Mayra Montero’s Tú, la oscuridad (1995). In my comparative reading of these novels, I argue that their representations of environmental consciousness, social collaboration, and all-inclusive modes of interacting with the natural world provide models of co-existence in the context of the many socio-environmental injustices that threaten the continuation of many life forms on Earth, including humans. These novels evoke empathy and imagination, and add vital perspectives to the understudied field of environmentally conscious literature. Each of these three novels emotionally engages and reconnects humans as members of ecosystems – a move often lacking in the objective presentation of environmental studies. Given that the Earth is our only home, the continued ecological devastation caused by the human species increasingly deserves our full attention. I argue that the all-inclusive Spiralist imaginary and the related literatures are apt ideological tools to help address the cognitive dissonance currently preventing sufficient social change.

The relation between music and spoken language : About four music teachers’ assumptions and opinions on the connection between music and pupils’ development of spoken language

Lindholm, Annika January 2013 (has links)

Lietuvos ekonomikos augimo ir jį atspindinčių makroekonominių rodiklių tarpusavio ryšių analizė ir įvertinimas / The analysis and evaluation of the macroeconomic indicators which reflect the economics growth

Grigaitė, Sandra 25 September 2008 (has links)
Šiame darbe nagrinėjama kokie pagrindiniai makroekonominiai rodikliai stipriausiai įtakoja ekonomikos augimą. Ekonomikos augimas čia matuojamas bendrojo vidaus produkto augimu. Teorinėje darbo dalyje analizuojama Lietuvos ir užsienio autorių ekonomikos augimo veiksnių teoriniai ir praktiniai tyrimai. Analitinėje - tiriamojoje dalyje naudojami statistiniai - ekonometriniai (regresijos, elastingumo, koreliacijos koeficientų skaičiavimas, A. Okuno dėsnis), detalizavimo metodai, ekspertų vertinimai ir prognozės. / In this study is analyzed which macroeconomic indicators stronger influence economic growth. Economic growth is realized as the growth of the gross domestic product. In the first part of this study are analyzed practical and theoretical researches of the factors of economic growth of Lithuanian and foreign authors. In the analytic part of the study there is used statistical – econometrical (regression, elasticity, corral, method of Okun), methods of detail, evaluation of expert. There is confirmed the hypothesis, that the method of Okun in period of 2001 – 2007 years gets another relation than 1: 2,5. There is used statistical data which is used from Department of Lithuanian Statistics, Lithuanian Free Market Institute, commercial banks annual reports, Euro stat, Lithuanian government and ministers.

The covenant concept as an organising principle in Luke–Acts / Frank Zoltan Kovács

Kovács, Frank Zoltan January 2011 (has links)
Thematic interrelation is an underdeveloped field of inquiry in Lukan studies. The design and elegance of Lukan theology begs for guided investigation into a possible system of organisation that governs history and theology, that is, narrative and theme. Based on the Greimasian Actantial Model, morpho–syntactical structural–critical analysis of Luke and Acts reveals that the covenant concept in its operative aspect of service functions as an organising principle, structuring the narratives and facilitating thematic interrelation. A survey of representative Lukan research consisting of five methodologically determined approaches shows a commonality regarding Lukan purpose. These all share the “plan of God” as a fundamental concept, thus intimating its plausibility as a common organisational principle in the text. This observation encourages further analysis of Lukan narrative and meta–narrative as relevant subject matter. Investigation into the purpose and goals of Ancient Jewish and Ancient Greek literature suggests that the concepts of piety/holiness and justness combined with a notion of divine order and expectation demonstrates organisational capacity. Under the terms and conditions of the Old Covenant three non–exclusive themes/concepts hold organisational functionality and ability to facilitate thematic interrelation: Exodus typology, the covenant concept and the eschaton idea. Exodus typology connects narrative with theme, developing Israel’s story. The covenant idea frames stories using parallelism and gives the meta–story progression. The eschaton idea presents the Day of YHWH as an organisational principle guiding the story of judgment to restoration. It is observed that the covenant concept is the most prevalent of these themes/ideas. Assuming the conceptual unity of Luke and Acts and adopting a morpho–syntactical structuralist approach, it was observed that the covenant concept in its operative aspect of service occurred as Helper at ten places, determining the development and structure of the meta–narrative. According to the Greimasian Actantial Model, Israel failed to fulfil its covenant–based mandate to serve God and shine God’s light of mercy to the nations. Jesus, Israel’s new Helper, becomes the Subject and by his covenant–based ministry, characterised as the greatest service, resolves the problem that prevents Israel from carrying out its divine mandate and sets the stage for its fulfilment. In Jesus Israel is given new leaders, an ethical platform of discipleship and the Holy Spirit. The apostle Paul as the epitomised and exemplary witness and servant of Jesus fulfils what Israel could not. He is vindicated in righteousness and shares in the Isaianic ministry of Jesus, to bear witness to leaders and to shine God’s light to the nations. Paul is unhindered in this ministry. Additionally, in thematic–critical terms, the key placement of the covenant concept in its operative aspect of service at plot–defining junctures features its catalytic dynamic as a “template” concept advancing the re–conceptualising of themes and providing a platform for meaningful relation. The evidence thus suggests that the covenant concept in its operative aspect structures the conjoined narratives of Luke and Acts. It also provides a basis for relation between the divine and humans in the context of the history of God’s salvation, linking history and theology, and makes possible a discernible means to thematic interrelation. / Thesis (Ph.D. (New Testament))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2011.

The families / caregivers interrelation and members of the nursing staff has been identified as an important aspect of humanized care. Thus, the study investigates the families / caregivers interact and nursing staff of an intensive care unit, from the perspective of humanized care in the light of the theory of Joyce Travelbee. The research, descriptive and qualitative approach was performed in a intensive care unit of a hospital Public Institution of Santo Antônio de Jesus, Bahia. For data collection a direct observation in the ICU setting, conducting semi-structured interviews and further remark that while the latter was used, 20 being contemplated accompanying family members, 14 nurses and 26 nursing technicians, using the analysis of empirical material Theory Joice Travelbee and content analysis Minayo. The results showed that despite the interconnection that must exist between the companion and family members of the nursing staff regarding the care humanization, is still significantly present the dichotomy of making technical and humanized do exist obstacles that interfere directly in this regard. Thus, it was noted at times difficult to recognize and intact natural situations that made the dialogue the companion familiar with the nursing staff of more harmonics, causing barriers in recognition of the different needs of both. This is due to the identification of some limiting aspects of integration as the insufficient number of professionals in the intensive scenario, multiple shifts and work overload, dealing with the human suffering, the physical structure of technical care ICU, beyond the scientific knowledge of professionals to implement humane actions with accompanying family members. In this sense, from the theory of person-person Travelbee Joyce became evident that nursing care for the human being in full armor of the need to take professional model living and to see his family in his world, considering the social and cultural issues, as is only possible to humanize the ICU itself by humanizing the members who compose it in its entirety.
