Learning and leadership as key to organisational development : a study of how a non-governmental organisation (NGO) in the South African educational field grew from a regional entity into a national entity.

This study examines the nature of learning organisations with a special focus on how these organisations manage to sustain and reinvent themselves despite changing contexts. In particular, the study focuses on one NGO operating in the South African education field. The intention of this research report is to determine how the specified organisation has been able to sustain and expand its operations while remaining effective and relevant despite changing political, economic and social contexts. The findings of the study have been drawn from interviews held with key personnel who presently work or previously worked for the organisation under study. Data from the interviews was triangulated with data extracted from the organisation’s annual reports. The data shows that the organisation grew from a regional entity to having offices all over South Africa. In order to do so, the organisation had to adapt to changing circumstances which it did by learning from experts and other organisations worldwide that were involved in similar pursuits. From these sources, the organisation learnt about innovative literacy materials and development strategies. The spearhead for many years behind these developments was a leader with a strong and charismatic personality and so, ultimately, it is difficult to distinguish between her personal learning and the organisational learning that took place.

Vliv sociálních remitencí na rozvoj Moldavska - případová studie moldavských pracovníků v Česku / The influence of social remittances on the development of Moldova - a case study of Moldovan workers in Czechia

International migration has a major impact on the economy of Moldova and its inhabitants. Nevertheless, it belongs to the poorest countries in Europe and its every third economically active inhabitant of this post-Soviet country is working abroad. These migrants send financial remittances, which consist of a part of their income or material goods to their families from target countries including Czechia. The theoretical background of this thesis is the type of remittances, namely the concept of social remittances, which in contrary to financial remittances draws attention to non-financial transfers - ideas, behaviours, identities and social capital flowing from receiving to source country communities. The concept was based on observation of development potential and impacts within the migration-development nexus paradigm. The basic qualitative research in this work examines the concept of social remittances within example of research Moldovan migrants working in Czechia with semi-structured deep interviews. Acquired authentic responses of the informants were processed by inductive analysis of qualitative data. In this study some string teachers have been interviewed on the topic of own creation and creativity. The purpose with the study was to examine some string teachers experiences in their own education on the topic of creative phases, but also how the teachers experience the students spirits in moments of own creation. The study was conducted with a phenomenological approach, because this allowed for consideration to be taken to different experiences and lived life. Previous studies indicated that many benefits derivate from creativity and own creation in music education but also illustrated a complex problematic approach to teacher’s unfamiliarity to teach in these phases. However, previous studies indicate that children view their music creations in different way than adults. To achieve a result in this study, four interviews were conducted. Through video-recording important aspects that would otherwise be lost could be illustrated. In the result teachers experienced that they understand phases of own creation in different ways. The teachers collectively identified composition, improvisation and feelings as a method of teaching own creation and creativity. Going on, the study’s respondents experienced they had been given a strict music education in their childhood and that this was one of the factors to influence their individual teaching styles. Together the study´s respondents illustrated some phases of own creation but pointed out that the spirits of the students derivate from different factors. The study´s respondents experiences that younger students had an easier time to learn own creation, meanwhile, the older students are perceived to have a hard time sticking out in creative work. The study´s respondents meant that continuous teaching in composition making created a sense of security within the students. In the discussion results indicated that the students benefited from play and having fun in their music creation. There were also more positive attitudes amongst the students when the teachers designed activities with boundaries and rules. / I denna studie har några stråklärare intervjuats om ämnet eget skapande och kreativitet. Syftet med studien var att undersöka några stråklärares upplevelser angående sin egen undervisning vad gäller skapande moment, samt hur lärarna erfor elevernas inställningar i moment av eget skapande. Studien förhöll sig därför till det fenomenologiska perspektivet, då hänsyn till upplevelser och levt liv kunde tas. Tidigare forskning pekade på många fördelar med kreativitet och skapande i musikundervisning men belyste också en problematik kring lärares ovana att undervisa i eget skapande. Vidare menade forskningen att barn betraktar sitt musikskapande på ett annat sätt än vuxna. För att få fram ett resultat intervjuades fyra stråklärare. Genom videoinspelning kunde viktiga aspekter som annars gått förlorade belysas. I resultatet framkom att lärarna upplevde moment i eget skapande på olika sätt. Gemensamt nämndes komposition, improvisation och känslor som moment i vilket lärarna kunde undervisa i eget skapande och kreativitet. Vidare upplevde studiens respondenter att de fått en strikt musikundervisning som barn och att detta sedan påverkat deras individuella lärarstilar. Gemensamt belyste studiens respondenter några moment av eget skapande och pekade på att elevernas inställningar till dessa moment beror på olika saker. Studiens respondenter erfor att yngre elever lättare tog till sig moment i eget skapande, emedan äldre elever upplevdes inte vilja sticka ut genom skapande moment. Studiens respondenter menade att bland annat regelbunden undervisning i komposition skapade en säkerhet hos eleverna. I diskussionen framkom dock att eleverna gynnades av lek och att få ha roligt i sitt musikskapande. Vidare fanns också fler positiva inställningar hos eleverna när lärarna satte upp ramar för skapande moment, då eleverna slapp hitta på helt fritt.

Hur kommunikation främjas av lärare i undervisningen i engelska

I det sociokulturella perspektivet som vi har utgått ifrån är synsättet på lärandet att det utvecklas i sociala sammanhang där kommunikation är en central del. Lärandet sker i samspel mellan individer där en genom stöttning och vägledning utvecklar nuvarande kunskaper. I detta arbete har vi beskrivit arbetsmetoder som lärare använder sig av i sin undervisning för att främja kommunikationen i klassrummet. Eftersom kommunikation är en central del i det sociokulturella perspektivet blir detta en lämplig teori att utgå ifrån. Motivation och språkligt självförtroende är grundpelare för att främja kommunikativ interaktion i undervisningen. Dessa komponenter är av betydelse för att lära ett nytt språk eftersom kommunikation gynnar andraspråksinlärning, där målet är att kunna tala det nya språket. I arbetet intervjuades fem lärare där det framkom att komponenter som motivation, språkligt självförtroende och val av arbetssätt är alla centrala för att främja kommunikation. Enligt lärarna är par- och grupparbete nödvändigt eftersom elever lär sig ett nytt språk genom interaktion. / The sociocultural perspective, this essay theory, approach of learning is that it develops in social contexts where communication is a central part. Learning takes place in interaction between individuals where, through support and guiding, one develops current knowledge. In this essay, we have described methods that teachers use in their teaching to encourage communication in the classroom. Because communication is a central part of the sociocultural perspective, it is therefore an appropriate theory to use. When establishing communicative interaction, motivation and linguistic self-confidence are among the pillars. These components are important when learning a new language because communication favors language learning, where the goal is to be able to speak the new language. In this essay, we interviewed five teachers where it emerged that components such as motivation, linguistic self-confidence and choice of methods are all central parts to encourage communication. According to the teachers, pair-and group work is necessary for students because in order to learn a new language, you need to interact.

A presente pesquisa propõe uma reflexão a respeito do estabelecimento do sentimento passional, a partir do qual ocasionará a constituição do casal, tendo-se como foco principal e específico as mulheres que escolhem para parceiro amoroso um homem na condição de presidiário. Um levantamento teórico é feito a partir da leitura de textos psicanalíticos, sobretudo de Freud, bem como de outros autores da Psicanálise e de áreas complementares, como a Sociologia. A escolha objetal, as idealizações projetivas e o narcisismo como base do intrapsíquico são conceituações pertinentes para se tratar alguns dos mecanismos envolvidos nesse tipo de relação. Serão analisadas cinco mulheres voluntárias, a partir de entrevistas semidirigidas, que se enquadram no propósito desta dissertação, pré-selecionadas em um estudo de sondagem realizado na fila de entrada para visita de três Centros de Detenção Provisória (CTP) da região da Grande São Paulo. A idealização é observada como prerrogativa para a escolha e manutenção do relacionamento amoroso em questão. Fatores como a condição de presidiário do companheiro, a visita íntima, os preparativos para o encontro, a ausência do parceiro no cotidiano, a personalidade cuidadora da mulher, o caráter transgressor do homem delineiam algumas das vicissitudes da dinâmica conjugal estabelecida, que expressam, assim, algumas nuances desse tipo de escolha amorosa tão específica / This research proposes a reflection on the establishment of passionate feeling, from which rise up to the couple, having as main and specific focus women who choose as lover a man in the condition of prisoner. A theoretical study is done through the reading of psychoanalytic texts, especially of Freud and other authors from Psychoanalysis and complementary areas such as Sociology. The choice of object, the projective idealization and narcissism as the basis of intrapsychic are relevant concepts for addressing some of the mechanisms involved in this kind of relationship. Five female volunteers will be analyzed (from semi-directed interviews) that fit the purpose of this study, pre-selected in a survey study conducted in the input queue to visit three Provisional Detention Centers (CDP) of the metropolitan area of Sao Paulo. The idealization is seen as the prerogative to choose and maintain the loving relationship in question. Caracterização de fatores de personalidade de artistas por meio de psicodiagnóstico de Rorschach / Characterization of artists\' personality factors through the Rorschach psycho-diagnoistic

Estudar a personalidade de artistas através do método de Rorschach é tarefa conhecida na psicologia clássica, observar evolução de fatores de personalidade, é tarefa rara, visto a necessidade de manter contato com os mesmos sujeitos, utilizar as mesmas metodologias, visando aprimorar o conhecimento de áreas específicas que fazem parte do desenvolvimento da criatividade, da psicologia e da arte. Com finalidade de caracterizar os fatores de personalidade e suas diferentes manifestações, sob a influência da maturidade, treino e experiência profissional e aspectos psicossociais, foi realizado o teste de Rorscharh em quatro artistas do sexo feminino, individualmente, em dois momentos distintos da vida das mesmas, 1988 e 2005. Em relação ao trabalho mental, foi observado um aumento da produtividade e da qualidade; assim como a percepção tornou-se mais prática e equilibrada. A adaptação para com a média intelectual diminuiu em contraposição ao aumento do contato com a realidade, da objetividade e da aceitação das normas grupais. Os indivíduos testados apresentaram personalidade flexível com múltiplos recursos: criatividade crescente, capacidade reflexiva, sensibilidade emocional crescente e evolução das respostas afetivas. Na análise do tipo de vivência observou-se maior introversão, e na dinâmica psíquica houve o predomínio do pólo intelectual em relação ao emocional. Interesses diversificados deslocando-se dos interesses centrais para os de cotidiano, primários e intelectuais. Outros resultados importantes destacados são: crescimento da atuação no meio e aumento da subjetividade, diminuição da impulsividade. Vale ressaltar que os indivíduos testados apresentaram grande número de mecanismos inusuais de reação nos dois momentos do estudo. A produtividade e outros sinais correlatos foram sensíveis à mobilização afetiva e ao tempo. A aplicação do teste de Rorscharch em artistas permitiu a elaboração de um conjunto de fatores representativos da personalidade dos mesmos. Evidenciou-se como contra-ponto marcante: produção criativa com estilo próprio versus forte subjetivação desadaptativa. / To study the artists personality by means of the Rorschach method is, for Classic Psychology, a known task. To observe the evolution of the factors related to the personality is very rare due to the need to keep in touch with the same individuals, and to employ the same methodologies, with the goal of enhancing the know-how of specific subjects that are connected to the development of creativity, psychology, and art. With the objective of characterizing personality traits and their distinct manifestations under the influence of: maturity, practice, professional experience and psychosocial aspects, four female artists, were individually submitted to the Rorschach Test, in two distinct moments of their lives: 1988 and 2005. An increase in productivity and quality was observed in regards to intellectual activities, with the individual having a more practical and balanced perception. As the contact with reality, objectivity, and acceptance of group guidelines increased there was a decrease in the adaptation of the average intellect. The individuals submitted to the test demonstrated to have a flexible personality with multiple resources: increased creativity, reasoning capacity, a growing emotional sensitivity, and an evolution of the affectionate responses. In analyzing this type of life we observed a greater introversion, and in the psychic dynamic there was a predominance of the intellect side in detriment of the emotional one. Diverse interests flowing from core ones to those related to: daily, primary, and intellectual ones. Other important results that are important to mention are: increased activity, increased subjectivity, and decrease in the impulsiveness. It is important to mention that the individuals, submitted to the test, demonstrated many unusual reaction mechanisms during the Studys two phases. The productivity and other corresponding signs showed sensitivity to the demonstration of affection and the passage of time. The application of the Rorscharch Test in Artists produced a group of factors that were representative of their respective personalities. A marked counterpoint became evident: creative productivity with own style versus a strong un-adaptive subjectivity.

Esta tese reflete em seu contexto gerador, um processo profissional contínuo aplicado à academia que se desenvolve com a aplicação de teorias fílmicas e oportunidades de captação e registro de imagens em depoimentos testemunhais. Valendo-se da experiência acumulada, este trabalho tem a intenção de evidenciar o registro audiovisual de cunho testemunhal como ferramenta-chave na pesquisa científica em Ciências da Comunicação da atualidade, mostrando o potencial de interação entre o pesquisador e seu público, entre o condutor da captação testemunhal, líder do processo de registro, e seu objeto de pesquisa, com todas as articulações e preceitos de ficcionalidade e atualização de discurso que a oportunidade audiovisual suscita na instância ao vivo. O trabalho explicita e detalha o Processo de tomada dessas entrevistas e os experimentos de contato público-pesquisador conduzidos em um período de dois anos para defender sua relevância e essencialidade na pesquisa em Ciências da Comunicação. / This thesis reflects, in its generating context, a continuous professional process applied to the Academia that develops with the application of filmic theories and opportunities for the registration and recording of images and testimonials. Backed by such accumulated work experience, this document has the purpose of evidencing the testimonial-style audiovisual record as a key tool in the scientific research in current Communication Sciences. The thesis wants to show the interaction potential between the researcher and his public, between the one conducting the testimonial, the leader of the process, and his subject, with all the articulations and precepts of fictionality and speech revision and updating that the audiovisual opportunity has raised in the live instance. The paper makes explicit and details the Process behind those interviews and the public-researcher experiments conducted within a time span of 2 years to defend its relevance and the essentiality in the research in Communication Sciences.

Instrumentos linguísticos para análise de corpora de entrevistas clínicas / Linguistic tools for the analysis of corpora of clinical interviews

No presente trabalho, foram analisadas as expressões verbais da limitação imposta aos portadores de insuficiência cardíaca do Instituto do Coração, do Hospital das Clínicas da Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de São Paulo (InCor), com o objetivo de buscar uma metodologia capaz de levar dados de língua natural, de entrevistas gravadas, a unidades categorico-quantitativas, de forma a permitir tratamentos estatísticos posteriores que correlacionem esses dados com indicadores clínicos. Para tanto, utilizou-se um corpus linguístico composto por duzentas e sessenta e seis entrevistas baseadas em sete perguntas abertas, feitas com pacientes de insuficiência cardíaca de ambos os sexos, pertencentes a quatro grupos etiológicos cardiovasculares: hipertensão arterial sistêmica, isquemia miocárdica, doenca de chagas e inespecífica. As seleções lexicais feitas pelos pacientes foram agrupadas e classicadas por temas. Para isso, foram criadas oito categorias semântico-lexicais. Tais categorias serviram de base para a análise estatística e testes de associação com os dados clínicos dos pacientes. Também foram geradas análises baseadas na Teoria da Informação, como o cáalculo de entropia semântica condicional. Através delas, ficou demonstrado que os grupos formados por critérios clínicos e linguísticos não coincidem e que, além disso, o grupo linguístico acrescenta mais informações aquelas do grupo clínico do que o inverso. As análises temáticas, por sua vez, apresentaram as qualidades dos gradientes informativos detectados nas análises entrópicas. Assim, com base em diferentes procedimentos, foram obtidos resultados que mostram a associação entre variáveis linguísticas e clínicas. / We analyze verbal expressions of symptoms from interviews with heart failure patients from InCor (Heart Institute of the University of São Paulo Faculty of Medicine), in order to create a method capable of converting natural language data from the interviews into categorical and quantitative units, thus enabling posterior statistical treatment that should correlate those data with clinical indicators. The linguistic corpus is represented by two hundred and sixty-six interviews consisting in seven standardized questions. Patients belong one out of four etiological groups, all related to heart failure: systemic arterial hypertension, ischemic myocardial disease, Chagas disease and unspecic etiology. Lexical choices from patients were organized into groups according and thematically classied. Eight lexical-semantic categories were generated. Those categories were used in statistical analysis and association tests with clinical data. Information Theory-based analysis were also held, such as semantic conditional entropy calculus. Based on these methods, we demonstrate that clinic and linguistic-oriented groups are not the same and, furthermore, the linguistic group adds a fair amount of information to the clinical data, but not the other way round. Thematic analysis, on the other hand, present details on the quality of those information gradients detected by entropic methods. Thus, based on dierent procedures, we can bring on results that prove the association between several linguistic and clinic variables.

Poluição aquática em Santos (SP): uma abordagem interdisciplinar / Aquatic Pollution in Santos (SP): an interdisciplinary approach.

A poluição aquática em Santos é uma questão ambiental prioritária, interdisciplinar por natureza, devido aos seus efeitos ecológicos, de saúde pública e sócio-econômicos. Trata-se de um problema amplamente relatado, cuja evolução acompanhou o histórico de desenvolvimento econômico da região. A presente pesquisa partiu de análises pontuais de um único, porém representativo, canal de drenagem pluvial urbana e das praias receptoras de seu conteúdo, para uma análise da poluição aquática no município como um todo. Para isso, foram usadas diferentes metodologias: coletas de amostras de água do canal e do mar, seguidas de análises físicas, químicas e ecotoxicológicas; pesquisas sobre as políticas públicas relacionadas à poluição hídrica local e aplicação de entrevistas estruturadas em frequentadores das praias. Além disso, foi analisada uma série histórica de dados microbiológicos das águas costeiras santistas. Os resultados indicam toxicidade aguda eventual nas amostras do canal e toxicidade crônica nas amostras da água do mar, coletadas em 2007, e severa contaminação de origem fecal, ao menos nas últimas três décadas. A pesquisa sobre as políticas públicas constatou que algumas surtiram efeitos positivos, mas não foram suficientes para melhorar a qualidade da água e mantê-la adequada, seja por sua descontinuidade, seja pelo crescimento acelerado no município, tanto demográfico, quanto econômico. A maioria das ações tem despontado em resposta a situações críticas, sendo implantadas sem planejamento adequado, visando conter apenas as conseqüências ambientais, e não as reais causas dos problemas. Como as políticas públicas geralmente não surgiram de processos de gestão participativa, também foram analisados alguns instrumentos de participação pública vigentes em Santos existe um envolvimento ainda incipiente da população, mas com iniciativas interessantes e potencialmente viáveis. Em relação às entrevistas, foram analisadas as respostas de 83 pessoas, entre as quais 77% eram residentes e o restante turistas. A maioria dos entrevistados acredita que as praias estão poluídas e que a situação dos canais é ainda mais crítica, corroborando com os resultados encontrados nas análises ecotoxicológicas e com os dados de contaminação microbiológica. Grande parte dos entrevistados não se banha justamente pela qualidade da água duvidosa, mas não se sentem responsáveis pela situação, nem demonstram iniciativa para pressionar o poder público a revertê-la. Quando os dados da pesquisa são integrados, é possível constatar que a qualidade da água das praias de Santos é crítica, como resultado de um modelo insustentável de desenvolvimento, com falta de planejamento e políticas públicas inconsistentes. Essa situação é agravada pela passividade observada entre muitos dos frequentadores das praias, que, apesar de cientes da poluição, não se envolvem na busca de soluções. Espera-se que a pesquisa contribua para o controle da contaminação aquática local, através do estabelecimento de políticas e ações que considerem todas as dimensões do problema e especialmente as suas causas. O presente estudo demonstra que a integração de diferentes métodos de avaliação permite uma compreensão maior acerca dos problemas ambientais e consequentemente pode subsidiar soluções mais efetivas. Além disso, foi enfatizada a importância da interdisciplinaridade em estudos de questões ambientais. / The aquatic pollution in Santos is a priority environmental issue, which presents many dimensions, as the ecological, public health and socioeconomic ones, having thus an interdisciplinary nature. This question has been extensively studied and its evolution was strictly related to the history of the regional economic development. The first phase of the present survey consisted of punctual analyses, made during 2007, of a single (but representative) urban pluvial drainage channel and the receiving beaches which are directly influenced by its contribution (i.e., to its contaminants inputs), in order to estimate the water quality (according to the aquatic pollution) in the overall shore. To achieve that, different methods were employed: sampling of channel and sea waters, and physical, chemical and ecotoxicological analyses. The second phase consisted of an investigation on the public policies related to the local hydric pollution. Concomitantly, as the third part of this survey, we conducted a study on the public knowledge on the aquatic pollution, by the application of structured interviews to the beaches users. Complementarily, the historical series of microbiological data for the coastal waters of Santos was assessed, to provide additional data. The results indicated eventual acute toxicity of channel water samples and chronic toxicity of sea water samples, and a severe fecal contamination at least in the last three decades. The evalution of public policies indicated that even though some of them had positive effects, they were not sufficient to improve the water quality and to maintain it appropriate, whether due to their discontinuity, whether to the demographic and economic accelerated growth of the city. The majority of actions have been implemented as responses to critical situations, without proper and wider planning, aiming only to control the consequences, and not the real causes of the problems. The public policies generally were not a product of participative processes; some instruments of public participation in Santos also were analyzed the involvement of the population is still incipient. However there are interesting and potentially viable initiatives. Regarding to the interviews, 83 beach users were considered to this survey, 77% were local residents and the remaining were tourists. The most interviewees believe that beaches are polluted and that the channels situation is still more critic, being in accordance with the results of ecotoxicological and microbiological data. Many of the beach users do not have contact with sea water due to its doubtful quality, but they do not feel responsible for the situation and not show initiative to press the public governement to act. When the obtained data are integrated, it is possible to notice that the water quality in Santos beaches is critical, as a product of an unsustainable model of development, lacking of planning and inconsistent public policies. The situation is aggravated due to the passivity observed among many of the beach users, who are aware of the pollution, but do not involve themselves to find effective solutions. We hope that this research may contribute to the control of aquatic local contamination, by the establishment of policies, enforcements and actions which consider all the dimensions of the problem, in special its causes. Moreover this research demonstrated that the integration of the different assessment methods may provide a stronger comprehension of the environmental issues and which consequently can subsidize much more effectively their solutions. Therefore it is highlighted the importance of interdisciplinarity to the studies involving environmental issues.
