Managing Aquatic Invasive Species in the United States by Harvesting them for Human Consumption

Recinos, Katherine 01 January 2013 (has links)
Marine and freshwater aquatic invasive species are a huge problem in the United States and its territorial waters with myriad ecological and economic impacts. Current management methods have fallen short. One possible solution is to harvest them for human consumption. This should be done through small scale, carefully regulated, scientifically based programs that are part of a larger overall management strategy. Four case studies (northern snakehead, European green crab, Asian carp, Chinese mitten crab) assessing edibility are included.

Suitability and Limitations of Pointer-Based and Microscope-Based Neuronavigational Systems for Surgical Treatment of Intracerebral Tumours – a Comparative Study of 66 Patients

Sobottka, Stephan B., Schackert, Gabriele, Steinmetz, A. 26 February 2014 (has links) (PDF)
Frameless neuronavigational systems are a recent novelty for a precise approach to intracerebral tumours in open surgery. In this study 66 patients with a variety of intracranial tumours in various locations underwent surgical resection with neuronavigational guidance. Two different neuronavigational systems – the arm- and pointer-based ISG viewing wand and the miroscope-based MKM system – were compared for four different indications. Neuronavigation was used (a) in multiple tumours, e. g. brain metastases, (b) in solitary cortical or subcortical tumours located in eloquent brain areas, e. g. motor cortex or speech region, (c) in deep-situated brain tumours, including brain stem neoplasms, and (d) in infiltratively growing tumours to define the borders of the lesion. Using taped skin markers (MKM system) and a surface-fit algorithm (viewing wand) for registration, an accuracy of 1 to 2 mm deviation was achieved, which was sufficient for removal of all of the intracranial neoplasms investigated. Both systems proved to be safe and useful surgical tools regardless of the patient`s age, positioning of the patient during surgery or the location of the lesion. When these two systems were compared, the viewing wand was found to be preferable for resection of multiple brain tumours located in distant operative sides and solitary tumours in eloquent brain areas; this was because of the wide range of movement of the pointing device and the possibility of 3D reconstruction of the brain surface. As the MKM system provided the option of stereotactical guidance during the operative procedure, it was found to be superior in approaching small and deep-situated lesions. In certain cases brain shifting due to early drainage of the CSF led to minor underestimation of the real depth. For the precise definement of tumour borders of intraparenchymal neoplasms both system were equally suitable. However, intrusion of brain parenchyma into the resection cavity led to minor overestimation of the real tumour size in certain large intraparenchymal tumours. Impacts of the invasive reed Arundo donax on biodiversity at the community-ecosystem level.

Guthrie, Gené January 2007 (has links)

Arundo donax is an invasive species that mostly impacts on sensitive riparian ecosystems. Arundo is also invasive in South Africa, though less is known about its ecology, biology, and impacts. Since California and the Western Cape of South AFrica have similar Mediterranean-type climates, we could assume that the impacts of Arundo on ecosystems in California are likely to be similar in the Western Cape, and that control methods used could be extrapolated for use in South Africa. This thesis attempted to determine what impact Arundo has on biodiversity at the community-ecosystem level.

Preventing the spread of the invasive plant Lupinus polyphyllus.

Brobäck, David January 2015 (has links)
Invasive species are an increasing problem worldwide, threatening indigenous communities and species. Many human-made environments promote introductions of alien species and one such habitat is road verges. The invasive plant Lupinus polyphyllus is benefiting from these habitats and is today widespread along road verges in many parts of Sweden. However, it has been shown to be a problematic species, as it supresses native plants. Many of these plants originate from semi-natural grasslands, but have found a refuge in road verges. The Swedish Transport Administration has tried to control L. polyphyllus, but it is unclear to what extent it is possible. To manage an invasive species, it is often preferable to prevent further extension by limiting its dispersal, which can be done by reducing seed production. To find out how to prevent L. polyphyllus from spreading, I investigated how resprouting capacity and seed production was affected by cutting of L. polyphyllus at different times throughout the season, and at different heights. Plants in all plots resprouted after being cut, but resprouted leaf stalks grew taller in the plants cut early at the flowering stage, compared to the later cutting treatments. These were also the only ones producing new flowers and fruits, perhaps due to stored resources in roots or the fact that they were cut before the summer solstice. Plants cut higher above the ground produced more flowers and fruits and produced taller leaf stalks and might have used photosynthesizing aboveground parts to acquire resources for regeneration. Fruits were produced but not ripe before the mid-summer cutting. These seeds were still able to germinate after maturing on cut plants. However, they were more mould-infected than seeds maturing on non-cut plants. Seeds from cut plants were also lighter. Thus, seeds produced by the mid-summer cutting might disperse and germinate but may perhaps suffer from lower survival due to more frequent mould infections. The late-cut plants had already produced mature seeds, and thus, were probably able to disperse. Also, the later cutting treatments produced more seeds over the entire season. This indicates that to hinder dispersal by limiting seed production, it is best to cut Lupinus polyphyllus as early as possible, in the flowering stage, when seeds are not produced and to cut them entirely to the ground.

Invasive alien plants of South Africa’s freshwater systems : accelerating identification of species and climatically suitable areas for species invasion

Hoveka, Lerato Nakedi 01 July 2014 (has links)
M.Sc. (Botany) / In South Africa, controlling and eradicating Azolla filiculoides and Eichhornia crassipes cost annually approximately US$ 60 million to the national budget. However, the success of these operations is mixed because invasive aquatic plants often spread very rapidly either before they are spotted or before decisions are taken to implement control actions. This limitation is further exacerbated by difficulties in determining the invasion potential of newly introduced or unknown aquatic plants, as well as difficulties inherent to species identification. Resolving these drawbacks requires pre-emptive actions such as identifying areas that are most vulnerable to invasion by alien plants. In this study, I first explore whether molecular technique such as DNA barcoding can be useful to: i) overcome potential limitation of morphology-based identification of invasive aquatic plants; and ii) establish successful control of these invasives. For this purpose, I tested the utility of official DNA barcodes (rbcLa + matK or core barcodes), trnH-psbA, and the core barcode + trnH-psbA to identify invasive aquatic plants of South Africa’s freshwaters. Second, I use the technique of ecological niche modeling to identify most vulnerable freshwater systems to species invasion under current and climatic conditions. My analysis indicates that the core barcodes and matK regions perform poorer compared to trnH-psbA, which provides 100% successful identification alone or in combination with the core barcodes. This study therefore validates trnH-psbA as single best DNA barcode for invasive alien aquatic plants of freshwater systems in South Africa. Using this DNA region in BLAST analysis to screen plants species sold in aquarium market in Johannesburg, I found surprisingly that some prohibited species are already in circulation in the market. These include Hydrilla verticillata, egeria densa, Myriophyllum spicatum, and Echinodorus cordifolius. Furthermore, based on climatic parameters, I explored the distribution of the "bad five" aquatic species in South Africa, i.e. the most damaging invaders of freshwater systems. I found distinct distribution potentials for these species under current climatic conditions. Overall, 38% of all South Africa’s dams occur in areas climatically vulnerable to the invasion by the bad five with the Western Cape Province being the most vulnerable. However, under predicted climate change scenario, I found evidence for contrasting shifts in species range: species such as Azolla filiculoides, Eichhornia crassipes, Salvinia molesta might increase their range by at most 2% whilst the ranges of Myriophyllum aquaticum and Pistia stratiotes might contract by at most 5%. This range contraction and expansion will result in some dams currently vulnerable to invasion becoming resilient whilst others that are currently resilient might become vulnerable owing to climate change. This result demonstrates not only the utility of DNA barcoding in implementing control measures, but also provides ways of prioritising control/management efforts.

Flexible needle steering using ultrasound visual servoing / Insertion robotisée d'une aiguille flexible par asservissement visuel échographique

Chevrie, Jason 13 December 2017 (has links)
The robotic guidance of a needle has been the subject of a lot of research works these past years to provide an assistance to clinicians during medical needle insertion procedures. However, the accurate and robust control of a needle insertion robotic system remains a great challenge due to the complex interaction between a flexible needle and soft tissues as well as the difficulty to localize the needle in medical images. In this thesis we focus on the ultrasound-guided robotic control of the trajectory of a flexible needle with a beveled-tip. We propose a 3D model of the interaction between the needle and the tissues as well as a needle tracking method in a sequence of 3D ultrasound volumes that uses the artifacts appearing around the needle. Both are combined in order to obtain good performances for the tracking and the modeling of the needle even when motions of the tissues can be observed. We also develop a control framework based on visual servoing which can be adapted to the steering of several kinds of needle-shaped tools. This framework allows an accurate placement of the needle tip and the compensation of the physiological motions of the patient. Experimental results are provided and demonstrate the performances of the different methods that we propose.

Le cas de l'ajonc (Ulex europaeus) sur l'île de La Réunion / What are the natural and human factors leading to invasive status? The case of gorse (Ulex europaeus) on the island of Reunion

Udo, Nathalie 20 January 2016 (has links)
For over twenty years, invasive species have been raised to the rank of major public problems because of their effects on the environment, economy and health. The main objective of this PhD thesis is to identify natural and human factors leading to attribute over time the public status of invasive species to certain species and in certain contexts, through the case of gorse (Ulex europaeus) on the island of La Réunion (Indian Ocean). This work have a three-part structure: (i) a comparison of biological characteristics of gorse between La Reunion, where it is called / declared invasive, and France, its native range, (ii) a historical analysis of its geographic expansion through natural and human factors, (iii) a study of the construction of public status attributed to gorse since its introduction on the island. The results showed a biological evolution between gorse populations of France and La Reunion related to germination rate and velocity, and seed dispersal. Coupled with a faster growth of individuals previously demonstrated, this suggest that colonization capacities of gorse are more important in the invasive region than in its native region. These capacities have favoured its geographic expansion in agricultural and natural environments, in interaction with the uses, agricultural practices and land uses, which themselves result from the overall socio-economic context from European scale to family farming scale. The construction and publicizing of the invasive status of gorse on this island is a combination between these ecological features and sociological elements: a new ecological vision of the world on a global scale, and, on a regional scale, social interactions between stakeholders about the management of protected natural areas. These results demonstrate one more time the importance of interdisciplinary approaches to understand the fundamentally hybrid object, product of nature and culture.
