The first part of this study is focused on numerical studies of light scattering from a single microscopic particle using the Discrete Dipole Approximation (DDA) method. The conventional DDA formalism is generalized to two cases: (a) inelastic light scattering from a dielectric particle and (b) light scattering from a particle with magnetic permeability u /= 1. The first generalization is applied to simulations of Raman scattering from bioaerosol particles, and the second generalization is applied to confi rmation of irregular invisibility cloaks made from metamaterials. In the second part, radiative transfer in a coupled atmosphere-ocean system is solved to study the asymptotic nature of the polarized light in deep oceans. The rate at which the radiance and the polarization approach their asymptotic forms in an ideal homogeneous water body are studied. Effects of the single scattering albedo and the volume scattering function are studied. A more realistic water body with vertical pro files for oceanic optical properties determined by a Case 1 water model is then assumed to study the e ffects of wavelength, Raman scattering, and surface waves. Simulated Raman scattering patterns computed from the generalized DDA formalism are found to be sensitive to the distribution of Raman active molecules in the host particle. Therefore one can infer how the Raman active molecules are distributed from a measured Raman scattering pattern. Material properties of invisibility cloaks with a few irregular geometries are given, and field distributions in the vicinity of the cloaked particles computed from the generalized DDA formalism con rm that the designated material properties lead to invisibility. The radiative transfer model calculation in deep oceans suggest that the underwater radiance approaches its asymptotic form more quickly than the polarization does. Therefore, a vector radiative transfer solution is necessary for asymptotic light field studies. For a typical homogeneous water body whose scattering property is characterized by the Petzold phase function, a single scattering albedo of w0 > 0:8 is required in order that the asymptotic regime can be reached before there are too few photons to be detected.

Σκοπός της παρούσας εργασίας είναι να παράσχει χρήσιμες πληροφορίες για την πρακτική κατασκευή συσκευών αορατότητας. Αρχικά, παρουσιάζονται οι διαφορετικοί τύποι των δισδιάστατων μέσων μετασχηματισμού (συσκευών αορατότητας) και διαπιστώνεται η υπεροχή του δισδιάστατου μανδύα αορατότητας επιπέδου από διηλεκτρικό. Προκειμένου να διερευνήσουμε αριθμητικά την οπτική συμπεριφορά αυτού του τύπου μανδύα, χρησιμοποιούμε τις εξισώσεις που εξάγονται από τη θεωρία της οπτικής μετασχηματισμών, και μέσω της μεθόδου F.D.T.D υπολογίζουμε το ηλεκτρομαγνητικό πεδίο σε όλα τα σημεία του υπολογιστικού πλέγματος. Στα όρια του πλέγματος αυτού τοποθετείται ένα στρώμα τέλειας προσαρμογής , έτσι ώστε να ελαχιστοποιούνται οι ανακλάσεις στα όρια αυτά, σε αναλογία με το πραγματικό πείραμα. Υλοποιώντας έναν κώδικα σε Μatlab, υπολογίζουμε την ένταση της σκεδαζόμενης ακτινοβολίας, για εγκάρσια μαγνητικά επίπεδα κύματα που προσπίπτουν υπό γωνία σε ένα αντικείμενο που περιβάλλεται από έναν μανδύα από διηλεκτρικό και είναι τοποθετημένο σε επίπεδο. Συγκεκριμένα, μελετάμε: την επίδοση της συσκευής συναρτήσει του βαθμού διακριτοποίησης του αριθμητικού πλέγματος, την επίδραση της απορρόφησης και της τυχαίας διαταραχής της επιτρεπτότητας των δομικών υλικών του μανδύα, καθώς και την επίδοση για πρόσπτωση υπό διαφορετικές γωνίες. Τέλος, εκτιμάμε τις ιδιότητες των στρώσεων από διηλεκτρικά που θα μπορούσαν να περιβάλουν τον μανδύα και να βελτιώσουν την αποδοτικότητά του στο ορατό φάσμα. / This work aims to provide useful information for the fabrication of practical cloaking devices. Initially, different types of two dimensional transformation media (invisibility devices) are presented and it is concluded that the all dielectric, two dimensional electromagnetic ground plane cloak dominates. In order to perform a numerical study of the sensitivity of this type of cloak, we use the equations deduced from the transformation optics via finite difference time domain method, for the electromagnetic wave, at every single point of the numerical domain. In the boundaries of this domain, we place a perfectly matched layer in order to minimize the reflections in those boundaries. That would replicate the real experiment with our simulations. By the application of a code written in Matlab, we calculate the scattering signature of an object surrounded by an all dielectric cloak and placed on a ground plane. Transverse magnetic plane waves are launched at an angle towards the object. In particular, we study the performance of the system as a function of the number of distinct components the cloak is divided into, the effects of lossy elements, the angle of incidence, as well as typical random variations of the permittivity of the building materials. Finally, we evaluate impedance matching layers that can surround the cloak and improve its effectiveness in the visible spectrum.

Destituídos de qualidades aceitáveis circunscritas à esfera econômica e moral capitalista, figuram, apenas, como paisagem, apenas, como fragmentos do universo objetivo. Vidas em sobrestado permanente, confundidas e misturadas com o descartável, sem lugar no mundo produtivo, galgam a invisibilidade social. In contemporary times, the commodification of social life and its indissociable disposability process are constantly present in the scenario of medium and large Brazilian cities. By scrutinizing the exploratory field, we witness human groups being increasingly disconnected from the productive system. Devoid of acceptable qualities that are confined to the economic and moral capitalist sphere, they appear only as a landscape, just as fragments of the objective universe. Lives permanently halted, confused and mixed with the disposable, with no place in the productive world, reaching "social invisibility". It is this incivility taken to its paroxysm called "invisibility" that here we identify and bring to light. An "invisibility" which is built not by the look, but by a persistent imagery that sets poverty as a mark of inferiority, reinforcing a way of being that disqualifies individuals to exercise their rights and social life, perceived as an immeasurable difference below the rules of equivalence, i.e. the otherness that the formality of the law and the exercise of rights should achieve. It is through questioning each other that the "invisibility" is constituted. It abides in the records of the unthinkable, of the conflict with the idea of essence, of otherness that arbitrates all forms of "being". The invisible emerges as someone who ISNT, a provocation which encourages strangeness, which makes him harassed by a strong moral rancidity that preserves the depreciation of everything that has lost value. It is thus declared his triple denial: dishistoricized, dehumanized and insignificant, blended to a universe of countervalues which immobilize life, making him uncodifiable, an unfathomable character jeopardizing the entire logic of representation. Esta dissertação visa dar prosseguimento às investigações realizadas com duas associações de moradores de Porto Alegre – uma localizada numa vila popular e outra situada num bairro de classe média. Essas pesquisas evidenciaram que as distâncias estruturais e relacionais entre agentes que ocupam posições distintas em contextos de desigualdades extremas se reproduzem também na conformação das redes associativas. Frente a esses resultados, coloca-se a finalidade central desta pesquisa: identificar e analisar processos sociais que permitem explicar a associação causal entre distância social estrutural e distância social relacional – ou seja, a homofilia – observada no associativismo urbano de Porto Alegre. Devido à impossibilidade de abordar adequadamente os diversos mecanismos que concorrem para a (re)produção da homofilia, optou-se por focalizar um mecanismo que, hipoteticamente, parece desempenhar um papel central em um contexto de profunda desigualdade como o brasileiro: o mecanismo de invisibilização. Argumenta-se que a invisibilização de indivíduos e grupos em posições inferiorizadas por parte daqueles ocupantes de posições superiores na hierarquia social constitui um mecanismo importante na constituição das fronteiras sociais e simbólicas em espaços sociais marcados por desigualdades extremas. A hipótese aventada é de que a invisibilização tende a bloquear os contatos entre indivíduos desigualmente situados no espaço social ao estabelecer fronteiras sociais e simbólicas entre eles, contribuindo, assim, na reprodução das distâncias estruturais e relacionais no associativismo. Para fins de análise, tomam-se como objetos de investigação indivíduos engajados em duas associações de moradores de classe média de Porto Alegre. São investigadas as relações e os deslocamentos desses indivíduos como um recurso metodológico para analisar os padrões homofílicos observados na atuação das organizações às quais eles pertencem. A opção por indivíduos como unidade de análise se fundamenta no argumento de que as relações entre agentes sociais são conformadas pelos grupos aos quais eles pertencem conjuntamente, enquanto que os laços entre grupos são formados pelos integrantes que eles compartilham. Para compreender como opera a invisibilização nas redes de relações, empregou-se a metodologia de análise de redes sociais. As técnicas de produção de informações reticulares conhecidas como gerador de nomes e name interpreters possibilitaram construir a trama de relações dos egos entrevistados e explorar os atributos socioeconômicos dos seus alters, respectivamente. Para dar conta da invisibilização nos deslocamentos e destinos dos agentes pesquisados foram realizadas entrevistas semiestruturadas. Foi solicitado a eles que desenhassem em um mapa até três percursos dentro do bairro e três trajetos dentro da cidade, bem como fazer comentários sobre tais deslocamentos. A análise das redes relacionais e dos deslocamentos dos oito casos investigados permite sustentar empiricamente a presença e a operação do mecanismo de invisibilização. De um lado, ela se expressa na tendência de que indivíduos em posições subalternizadas estejam ausentes dos espaços e das relações que estruturam o cotidiano dos indivíduos pesquisados. Tal ausência diminui (e, no limite, impede) a possibilidade de que relações significativas e duradouras se estabeleçam entre os desiguais. Por outro, mesmo quando aquela tendência é rompida e os entrevistados interagem com indivíduos e organizações em posições inferiorizadas, observa-se que tal interação tende a não produzir vínculos relevantes. / This dissertation aims to continue the investigations carried out with two residents’ associations in Porto Alegre – one located in a poor neighborhood and the other in a middle class neighborhood. These surveys have shown that the structural and relational distances among agents who occupy distinct positions in contexts of extreme inequality are reproduced in the conformity of the associative networks as well. Based on these results, the main purpose of this research is presented: to identify and analyze the social processes that help explain the causal association between structural social distance and relational social distance – in other words, homophily – observed in the urban associations in Porto Alegre. Given the impossibility of adequately covering the numerous mechanisms that compete to the (re)production of homophily, we chose to address a mechanism that, hypothetically, seems to play a central role in a context of profound inequality, as it is the case in Brazil: the invisibility mechanism. It is argued that the invisibilization of individuals and groups in inferior positions by the ones that occupy superior positions in the social hierarchy constitutes an important mechanism in the formation of social and symbolic boundaries in social spaces characterized by extreme inequalities. The suggested hypothesis is that invisibilization tends to impede the contact between individuals unequally situated in the social space by establishing social and symbolic boundaries between them, contributing, thus, to the propagation of the structural and relational distances in associations. For the analysis, individuals engaged in two middle class residents’ associations in Porto Alegre are taken as objects of investigation. The relationships and displacements of these individuals are investigated as a methodological resource to analyze the homophylic patterns observed in the performance of the organizations they belong to. The choice for individuals as units of analysis is based on the argument that the relationships among social agents are shaped by the groups in which they participate together, whereas the relations between groups are formed by the participants they have in common. In order to understand how the invisibilization on the networks of relations operates, a method of social network analysis was used. The reticular information production techniques, known as name generators and name interpreters, facilitate the construction of a web of relations of the interviewed egos and the exploration of the socioeconomic attributes of their alters, respectively. To address the invisibilization on the dislocations and destinations of the participants, semi-structured interviews were made. They were asked to draw in a map up to three routes inside their neighborhood and three routes inside the city, as well as to comment about these dislocations. The analysis of the networks of relations and dislocations on the eight cases investigated allow empirical sustention of the presence and operation of the invisibility mechanism. On the one hand, it is expressed on the tendency that individuals in subordinated positions are absent in spaces and relations that structure the daily lives of the participants. This absence decreases (and, ultimately, prevents) the possibility of establishing significant and lasting relationships between the unequal. On the other hand, even when this tendency is broken and the participants interact with individuals and organizations in inferior positions, it is observed that this interaction tends not to produce relevant bonds.

O trabalho explora a dinâmica dos jogos plásticos nas artes e das operações de suas obras enquanto máquinas de visão, dispositivos através dos quais determinados aprendizados se desenvolvem enquanto promovem certos processos de invisibilização. Entre negociações dos modos de ver se instaura a instituição do estatuto coletivo do visível. Fatores sociais, tecnológicos, econômicos e políticos se imbricam nessas negociações, implicando na expansão dos processos de produção e reprodução de imagens que culminam na constituição dos campos cegos na cultura visual, áreas abarrotadas de visibilidades ofuscantes. A arte, ciente de ser elemento ativo na constituição dos limites da visão, responde a esse panorama com ações de transbordamento e alargamento desses limites. Adota os campos cegos e suas dinâmicas internas como base para práticas reflexivas. Direciona-se para a identificação de um estatuto do invisível como parte da constituição do próprio estatuto do visível na proposição de experiências sensíveis a partir de diálogos com a invisibilidade. Algumas dessas experiências são analisadas nesta dissertação que reconhece nelas elementos para um mapear dos campos cegos e para uma discussão ampliada da visão / The work explores the dynamics of plastic games in arts and how they work as "seeing machines", or devices which allow them to develop certain types of learning while promoting certain processes of invisibility. Among the negotiations of certain "ways of seeing" the institution of the collective status of the visible is established. Social, technological, economic and political factors overlap in those negotiations, resulting in the expansion of the processes of production and reproduction of images that culminate in the formation of "blind spots" in visual culture, areas marked by dim visibility. Aware that it itself is partially responsible for establishing visual limits, art responds to this situation by overflowing and flooding these limits. It adopts "blind fields" and their internal dynamics as a basis for reflective practices. Ii works towards identifying an invisible status as part of the constitution of the visible statute itself in the proposition of sensory experiences from dialogues with invisibility. Some of these experiments are analyzed in this thesis, which recognizes elements in them and allows for a mapping of "blind spots" and for an expanded discussion of vision

Buscou-se evidenciar as rotinas e processos de trabalho desses sujeitos, identificando as consequências para sua saúde e de que forma o fenômeno da invisibilidade social ocorre no contexto laboral da coleta de lixo. A pesquisa incluiu levantamento bibliográfico voltado a três eixos-mestres – trabalho na coleta de lixo, saúde do trabalhador e invisibilidade social –, realização de entrevistas semiestruturadas com os sujeitos e agentes da pesquisa (coletores, sindicalista e representante do Ministério Público do Trabalho) e uso de informações secundárias de diversas fontes. Esse conjunto compôs as ferramentas analíticas empregadas para construir um enredo capaz de dar voz aos coletores de lixo. O trabalho na coleta é extremamente penoso e gera efeitos nocivos à saúde dos trabalhadores, em curto e principalmente em longo prazo, quando as dores no corpo tornam-se crônicas. Ademais, a invisibilidade social e a concomitante humilhação contribuem para precariedade laboral em termos da saúde mental dos coletores. Observa-se fragilidade na luta sindical no que tange a remuneração e aumentos salariais, e na própria relação com os coletores, embora haja algumas conquistas pontuais, como a obtenção e incremento de equipamentos de proteção individual. A insatisfação dos coletores com sua representação sindical frente à empresa empregadora, todavia, não é suficiente para ensejar uma articulação concreta entre os próprios trabalhadores, pelo temor de represálias ou da perda do emprego. / This paper refers to the labor located “behind the bins of society” experienced by urban garbage collectors in the city of Presidente Prudente (State of São Paulo, Brazil). It sought to highlight the routines and work processes of these individuals, identifying the consequences for their health and how the phenomenon of social invisibility occurs in the labor context of garbage collection. The research included literature review focused on three master-axes (work in garbage collection, workers‟ health and social invisibility), semi-structured interviews with the subjects and agents of the survey (collectors, union leader and representative of the Ministry of Labor) and using secondary information from various sources. This set composed the analytical tools used to build a storyline capable of giving voice to garbage collectors. Garbage collection is burdensome and generates harmful effects on workers‟ health, in short term and mainly in long term, when body pains become chronic. Moreover, the social invisibility and concomitant humiliation contribute to labor precariousness in terms of collectors‟ mental health. It is observed weakness in the trade union efforts concerning to remuneration and salary increases, as well as in the relation with the collectors, although there are some specific achievements like getting and incrementing personal protective equipment. The collectors‟ dissatisfaction with their union representation against the employer company, however, is not sufficient to bring a concrete coordination between the workers themselves, because of fear of reprisals or job loss. / CNPq: 130639/2013-3
