En dag i Ivan Denisovitjs liv : Mottagandet av Solzjenitsyns debutroman i svenska tidningar

Ola, Magnusson January 2009 (has links)

Abstract

The main purpose of the essay is to describe the reception of Alexander Solzhenitsyn’s debut novel

One day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich (1962) in Swedish newspapers. The reception itself comprises the 1963’s Swedish reviewers opinions on the novel as to how it was controversial or not and the literary quality of the novel and Solzhenitsyn’s writing. In the analysis, seventeen reviews from seventeen different newspapers is included, studied and compared. All of these reviews were written one year after the original release of the book, i.e. in 1962. The analysis will also include five other articles from five different Swedish newspapers, not about One Day, but rather about the Swedish view of the Soviet Union Solzjenitsyn lived in and loathed. The reason I included those articles was because they were written just a few months before the reviews, which makes them interesting when interpreting the image of the novels controversial content, something that could differ very much between the Soviet and the Swedish point of view.

Tradition reinvented : the vision of Russia's past and present in Ivan Timofeyev's Vremennok

Swoboda, Marina. January 1997 (has links)
This thesis attempts to provide a complete textual analysis of Ivan Timofeyev's Vremennik. The first three chapters establish Timofeyev's biographical data, examine the extant manuscript and review prior research. Timofeyev's biography has been restored by putting together the data from earlier biographical studies and by utilising the information hidden within the text of Vremennik. The production of the extant manuscript should be dated to the 1650s rather than the 1630s. The remaining four chapters of this dissertation deal with the elements of Vremennik which were largely ignored by other scholars. Timofeyev expressed an outlook on the state based on his "Novgorodian vision", his understanding of Novgorod's role in the development of the new Russian state. I believe that this Novgorodian element is the key to the correct interpretation of Vremennik. Timofeyev also formulated on original concept of the "ideal tsar". He perceived a monarch's legitimacy not only on his hereditary rights but also on the basis of his moral behaviour, in a way creating a moral code for a Christian monarch. He viewed the events of Smuta as a total degradation of the country and attempted to provide the solutions by developing a distinct political theory. It was based on the traditional notion of a possibility of cleansing and redemption of the whole country through an adherence to the Christian doctrine and consequently a return to the paradise of pre-Smuta days. Timofeyev recognized his own apostolic mission of revealing the truth in order to facilitate this process.

Obraz cizince v moskevských textech o Smutě 17. století / Image of Foreigner in Moscovian Texts about Time of Troubles of 17th Century

Leshkova, Olga January 2015 (has links)
The objective of the master's thesis is to analyze the image of foreigners in Moscovian texts written during the Time of Troubles and soon after it in early 17th century. The thesis will also focus on the perception of foreign influence on political and cultural development of Russian state and society. Due to the fact that the perception of foreigners in Muscovite Russia can be regarded in many aspects as a result of traditional religious and historical thinking concepts which had been widespread in the country by the end of the 16th century, we will pay particular attention to the formation of medieval Moscovian thinking. By means of discourse and comparative analysis we will try to fulfil the following goals: 1) to study the religious and historical thinking formation process in medieval Russia up to the beginning of the 17th century; 2) to analyze various specific features of Moscovian texts from early 17th century in terms of foreigners' perception; 3) to put the issue of foreigners' perception into a wider cultural and historical context, especially with regard to appropriate literature and thinking tradition. This study is based on Moscovian texts of different nature, which reflect the Time of Troubles. We also use a wide range of appropriate secondary literature. Key Words: Time of...

M. Gorki's and I. Bunin's view of the Russian intellectual in the "The Life of Klim Samgin" and "The Life of Arsenev."

Szackovics, Paul January 1970 (has links)
In my thesis I will discuss two main literary works which reveal the development of the Russian intellectual: "The Life of Klim Samgin," by M. Gorki, and "The Life of Arsenev," by I. Bunin. My aim is to provide an analysis of the main characters in each work, and to criticize the artistic devices used by the authors. I will briefly mention several other well known Russian authors who were writing at the end of the nineteenth century and at the beginning of the twentieth, in order to place the main works under discussion in their historical context. In chapter one, some aspects of the development of the Russian intelligentsia in literature will be discussed, by presenting a brief survey of topically selected works of A. Chekhov, V. Korolenko, and V. Veresaev. The second chapter will be devoted to the analysis of "The Life of Klim Samgin." The third chapter will present a detailed analysis of "The Life of Arsenev." The fourth chapter will offer a comparative study of the artistic devices utilized in the two works. In conclusion, I will show the literary fate of both works. In one case it led to the proclamation of Gorki as the "Father of Socialist Realism," in the other it established the artistic value of Bunin in world literature. / Arts, Faculty of / Central Eastern Northern European Studies, Department of / Graduate

Samvetsgranna porträtt är alltid en god skola : En ikonologisk tolkning av fyra porträtt målade av Ivan Aguéli

Nystedt, Magnus January 2021 (has links)
This thesis concerns four portraits painted in the 1890s by the Swedish artist Ivan Aguéli (1869-1917). Based in hermeneutics and using Erwin Panofsky's model for iconological interpretation, the study tries to answer three questions: What characterizes Aguéli’s portraiture? In what way do the portraits display a certain artistic style? And what similarities can be seen between Aguéli’s portraits and his landscapes. The four paintings analyzed are Flicka i blått - Girl in blue (1890), Ung kvinna - Young woman (1891), Gosse - Boy (1891), and Kvinna med hatt och pälskrage - Woman with hat and fur collar (1890s). Key among the findings of the study are that one of the characteristics of the portraits is that of spirituality, specifically the monotheism Aguéli had picked up from Emanuel Swedenborg. This is present in two of the paintings in the form of shapes symbolising a layered sky. Also the particular way Aguéli painted the eyes of his models points to a spirituality. This also ties the portraits in with Aguéli’s landscapes, several of which has a similarly layered sky. Another characteristic is that of identity, and the study raises the question of whether one portrait could be a self portrait. Finally, in terms of artistic style, several portraits display signs of the symbolism Aguéli encountered in France, as well as an early sign of cubism in his paintings.
