The French psychologists of the XIX century used, as one of its main methods, the exploration of the altered states of consciousness and mental illness to achieve a better understanding of the normal human mind. Among this French psychologists, Pierre Janet is a central figure. His studies on hysteria and hypnotism gave birth to his conceptions about psychological weakness, dissociation and unconscious activity. His theories held to a new understanding of mental activity occurring outside of conscious awareness, contributed to the development of the dynamic psychiatry and, specially, seemed to conciliate the two divided trends of the XIX century French psychology (the medical and the philosophical one). Even though Pierre Janet be an important French psychologist, in Brazil, there is a lack of studies about him. Because of it, our aim was to: (i) find out when Janet started to use the concept “dissociation”, its definition, and its changes; (ii) show how did Janet conclude about the existence of dissociation of consciousness, (iii) point out the relationship between the dissociation and the mental weakness, (iv) explain the mechanism of dissociation according to Janet, (v) describe what happens to the elements dissociated to normal consciousness and (vi) show the role of dissociation on hysteria, hypnotism and double personality according him. To achieve our goal we analyzed Pierre Janet’s works between 1885 and 1894 (3 books and 17 articles). As a result we noticed that the concept dissociation appeared for the first time in the article of 1887 L'anesthésie systématisée et la dissociation des phénomènes psychologiques. In this article, Janet explains that dissociation happens when an element, a memory or a sensation, is not synthesized to self, being, consequently, removed to the normal consciousness. However, from 1889 and beyond Janet substituted the term dissociation for another one, desegregation, keeping for both the same meaning. The mechanism of dissociation is described by Janet while he is explaining the hysterical symptoms. According to him, its symptoms (anesthesia, amnesia and movement disturbances) are due to a problem to synthesize sensations, memories and information about the environment (respectively) to self. This elements which were not synthesized can continue existing outside the normal consciousness, isolated or grouped, in a more or less complex system, being able to originate a
secondary personality. These elements can affect the hysterical psychism giving birth to the hysterical accidents as contractures, the hysterical crises, the delirium, the catalepsies, the somnambulism and the unconscious acts. To sum up, it is possible to conclude that dissociation in a fundamental concept of the initial works of Pierre Janet and it is an essential concept to understand his views of hypnotism, hysteria and double personality.

[pt] JORNALISMO, A PROFISSÃO IMPOSSÍVEL: ENSAIO E REPORTAGEM EM JANET MALCOLM / [en] JOURNALISM, THE IMPOSSIBLE PROFESSION: ESSAYISM AND REPORTING IN JANET MALCOLMVICTOR BRAGA CALCAGNO 10 May 2022 (has links)
[en] There are many occasions in which journalism has allied itself with literature
in the production of feature story reporting. Less celebrated, however, are times that,
in order to accomplish that goal, the language of newspapers and magazines went
beyond simply borrowing elements from fiction writing. The place occupied by the
work of Janet Malcolm (1934-2021) can be seen as a space in-between the two
languages that unites the rhythm from the so-called narrative journalism text with
commentary, analysis and reflection. The investigation featured in her pieces focus not
only on the resolution of the narrative problems, but mainly on the constant inspection
of journalistic language, the reporter s approach to gathering information, as well as
the contradictions in writing nonfiction texts. These aspects can approximate
Malcolm s work with the essay genre, a bond that shows itself in passages where the
author stops the narrative progression to display her own ideas on the story. In order to
scrutinize the ways in which Malcolm introduces and works with this type of analysis,
as well as the effect that they have in her pieces, this thesis connects Malcolm and
essayism to propose a kind of feature story writing that is defined by its display of the
ever-changing thought process of the writer in the creation of the text. In order to
develop this approximation, not only the most famous theories of the essay are taken
into consideration, but also the writer s will to address the themes of truth, sincerity
and metalanguage in her pieces of journalism.

Genêt unmasked : examining the autobiographical in Janet FlannerGaudette, Stacey Leigh, University of Lethbridge. Faculty of Arts and Science January 2006 (has links)
This thesis examines Janet Flanner, an expatriate writer whose fiction and
journalism have been essential to the development of American literary modernism in
that her work, taken together, comprises a remarkable autobiographical document which
records her own unique experience of the period while simultaneously contributing to its
particular aesthetic mission. Although recent discussions have opened debate as to how a
variety of discourses can be read as autobiographical, Flanner’s fifty years worth of
cultural, political, and personal observation requires an analysis which incorporates
traditional and contemporary theories concerning life-writing. Essentially,
autobiographical scholarship must continue to push the boundaries of analysis, focusing
on the interactions and reactions between the outer world and the inner self. This thesis,
therefore, will situate Janet Flanner as an important writer whose experience among the
modernist literary community in Europe informs, and is recorded in, her writing. / v, 93 leaves ; 29 cm.

De la fourmi à l’atome : les sciences naturelles vues et vécues par Charles Janet (1849-1932) / From the ant to the atom : the natural sciences seen and experienced by Charles Janet (1849-1932)Casson, Loïc 30 March 2018 (has links)
The French naturalist Charles Janet (1849-1932) is remained on the margins of the great scientific figures. However, the Academy of Sciences acknowledged some of his entomological works and nowadays, his atomic classification emerges in discussions of chemists. Graduated from Ecole Centrale, civil engineer and manufacturer in province, he was among other things, geologist, paleontologist, entomologist, biologist and chemist even if these disciplines reflect only a part of his research. Unsung and split in his specialities, his works have been very little studied and never in an overall view. Hence, the biography proposed here will go beyond these disciplinary divides. Through the own perceptions of Janet, we will engage our project towards the microhistory that gives us the way to observe the work of a scholar. It will be revealing some functions, uses and sociability of the local or national societies that arise in real scientific authority and we will examine their links with the Academy of Sciences. The main will be the Zoological Society of France of which Janet became president. In addition, he allows us to observe a macro-historical trend, which is that of the specialization and the marginalization of entomology. This will lead us to question the classic duality 'professionals versus amateurs' among scientists. Thanks to his polyvalency, his long career both off and in the official science, Janet is a privileged witness of the natural sciences at the turn of the 19th century. Trace Janet’s life and work, is observing science through the anonymous people who might be raised for a while at the level of the glories of their era. If this research reflects the practices of an unsung scientist, it represents paradoxically (in our view) most of the naturalists of his time.

Improving Appointment Keeping at an Eye Care Clinic Using a Revised Process PackageHodge, Victoria L. 05 1900 (has links)
Missed appointments by patients are a major problem for health care professionals. To combat this issue, some optometrists use a pre-appointing system in which patients are scheduled for an annual exam a year after their initial visit. Prior to that subsequent appointment, clinic staff often try to contact the patient to confirm the appointment. This study examined baseline levels of appointment keeping, analyzed existing processes for pre-appointing patients, and introduced a revised process package to improve appointment keeping at an eye care clinic. This package included training, mailed postcard reminders and two phone call reminders. Results indicate appointment keeping by pre-appointed patients increased over baseline. The intervention was also shown to be cost-beneficial.
