A presente dissertação tem como objetivo investigar a sedimentação sócio-histórica do romance de estreia de Charlotte Brontë, Jane Eyre (1847), a partir de seu foco narrativo. Ao atentar à fortuna crítica da obra, em especial às resenhas que seguiram a publicação do romance e às críticas materialista e feminista, distinguem-se duas tendências, dois modos de entender Jane Eyre. Por meio da análise de trechos do romance, visa-se ilustrar como essas duas vias de leitura são possíveis por conta da posição ambígua da narradora-personagem dentro da sociedade vitoriana. Expandindo o conceito de Terry Eagleton do in between, argumenta-se que, por estar sempre em uma posição entre as classes alta e baixa e por desejar inserção, Jane relata e denuncia as violências que permeiam a sociedade vitoriana e, ao mesmo tempo, incorpora o discurso dominante, mesmo quando esse vai contra ela mesma. Entende-se, assim, que o romance retrata a situação contraditória da classe média e o impacto de viver nessa posição na própria consciência do indivíduo, isto é, na sua visão de si e do mundo, como observado na voz da narradora de Jane Eyre. / The aim of this dissertation is to investigate the social and historical sedimentation of Charlotte Brontës 1847 debut novel, Jane Eyre, by exploring its point of view. Drawing from the novels literary criticism, especially from the reviews that followed its publication and from the Feminist and Marxist criticism, two different ways of understanding Jane Eyre are distinguished. The close reading of excerpts from Charlotte Brontës work aims at highlighting that these two readings are possible due to the narrators ambiguous position in the Victorian social structure. By expanding Terry Eagletons concept of the in between, it is discussed that, since Jane is from the very beginning of the novel in a position between the upper and lower classes and she longs for inclusion, she accounts on and denounces the violence that permeated the Victorian society, just as, at the same time, she incorporates the dominant discourse even when it speaks against herself. Thus, it is understood that the novel portrays the contradictory situation of the petty bourgeoisie and the impact of being in such a position on the individuals consciousness, as it is seen in Jane Eyres narrators voice.

O presente trabalho faz um estudo crítico de Pride and Prejudice (1813), de Jane Austen, buscando mostrar aproximações da obra com as mudanças sociais, políticas, econômicas e ideológicas que ocorreram na Inglaterra da passagem do século XVIII ao XIX, a partir da ascensão da burguesia. Com base na construção feita da heroína Elizabeth Bennet como uma personagem racional, em oposição às demais personagens do romance, contrastes de classe e gênero são explorados, de modo a conduzir a análise para uma interpretação da maneira como o casamento (atuação social principal de mulheres de certa classe no período) é desenvolvido ao longo de todo o romance, acabando por se tornar o fio condutor da narrativa uma verdadeira investigação de significados sociais desenvolvida pela autora. / This work brings a critical study of Jane Austens Pride and Prejudice (1813). It aims to show the approaches between the book and social, political, economic and ideological transformations that took place in England in the transition of the eighteenth century to the nineteenth, since the rise of the bourgeoisie. Based on the construction of the heroine Elizabeth Bennet as a rational character, in opposition to the other characters of the novel, class and gender contrasts are explored in order to conduct the analysis to an interpretation of how the marriage (the main social activity of women of a certain class in the period) is developed throughout the novel, eventually becoming the underlying theme of the narrative a true research of social meanings developed by the author.

L'hypothèse à la source ce mémoire est que, dans le roman Emma, Jane Austen nous place devant le problème de l'incomplétude humaine et suggère que sa meilleure solution réside en une relation amoureuse fondée dans l'amitié vertueuse. Notre premier chapitre montre, en relevant les erreurs que commet Emma dans ses liens avec ses trois amies et trois amants, les conséquences néfastes d'un aveuglement sur la finalité naturelle de l'être humain, qui a besoin d'autrui pour se perfectionner et atteindre le bonheur. Notre second chapitre analyse et hiérarchise trois solutions offertes dans Emma au problème de l'incomplétude. Il conclut que le couple Knightley, qui est fondé dans une estime réciproque et un souci mutuel de rectitude morale et intellectuelle, incarne la forme supérieure de sociabilité humaine: ce couple est en mesure de s'entraider, de s'entr'éduquer et de s'entreconnaître, ce qui comble au mieux l'incomplétude qui est le lot de l'humanité.

Finishing off Jane Austen : the evolution of responses to Austen through continuations of The Watsons

This doctoral thesis analyses the evolution of responses to Jane Austen's fiction through continuations of her unfinished novel The Watsons (c.1803-5). Although the first full “appropriation” of an Austen novel ever published was a continuation of The Watsons and a total of eight completions appeared between 1850 and 2008, little research has been done to link the afterlife of The Watsons and changing perceptions of Austen. This thesis argues that the completions of The Watsons significantly illuminate Austen's reception: they expose conflicting readings of Austen's novels through textual negotiations between the completer's and Austen's voice. My study begins by examining how the first continuation, Catherine Hubback's The Younger Sister (1850), implies an alternative image of the Victorian Austen to that propounded by James Edward Austen-Leigh, Austen's first official biographer (Chapter 1). The next two chapters focus on the effects of World War I and II on modes of reading Austen. Through L. Oulton's (1923), Edith Brown's (1928) and John Coates's (1958) completions of The Watsons, this study examines the connection between Austen's fiction and different notions of Englishness, politics and the nation. Chapter Four addresses the contribution of the 1990s completions to the debate over Austen's feminism. Finally, Chapter Five analyses recent trends in Austenalia, which thwart the production of successful completions of The Watsons. My thesis presents the first substantial analysis of this body of work.

Fan fictions eller adaptioner? : Om Amy Heckerlings spelfilm Clueless (1996) och Debra White Smiths roman Amanda (2006) mot Jane Austens roman Emma (1815)

Det huvudsakliga syftet med min uppsats var att utifrån originalverket Emma (1815) avJane Austen kunna bedöma vad två verk som inspirerats av romanen bör klassificeras som.De två verken var romanen Amanda (2006) av författaren Debra White Smith ochspelfilmen Clueless (1995) av regissören Amy Heckerling. Till min hjälp har jag lästaktuell forskning inom de två termerna adaption och fanfiction och utifrån detta gjort enjämförande analys på verken. Resultatet blev oväntat vagt, det visade sig att begreppen lågnärmre varandra än vad jag trott från början. Båda verken kan till viss del ses som enadaption på originalverket, på samma sätt som de även kan ses som fanfiction. Slutsatsenär dock att de båda verken passar bäst in under termen profic, som är en underkategoriinom fanfiction där författaren/regissören tjänar pengar på sin modifikation och intepublicerat verket i exempelvis ett obetalt nätforum som hobbyaktivitet.

Embracing Commonplace: Creating Ground for a Life of Rhetorically Engaged Civic Action

This project responds to the question: How do communication educators encourage students to enact the communicative practices necessary for a life of rhetorically engaged civic action? In responding to this question, the academic field of communication studies is recognized as a site for implementing the lessons of rhetoric, democracy, and civic engagement. This project contributes to the civic engagement scholarship from a communication studies perspective by foregrounding human communication as an essential component of the civic engagement process. As an interpretive inquiry, the philosophical thought and the pragmatic action of twentieth-century rhetorician and social activist Jane Addams (1860-1935) provides a hermeneutic entrance point for identifying and understanding the ways in which faculty members in higher education might conduct service-learning in a more responsive and engaged manner. <br> Practicing situated communicative service-learning, a pedagogical approach that embraces the historical moment and the challenges facing service-learning on today's college campus, provides one possibility. Addams's philosophical thought and communicative practices inform the integration of situated communicative service-learning into the communication studies field and college campus through the understanding of commonplace stemming from the Greek understanding of topoi (Aristotle). This praxis-centered approach to service-learning provides ground for students to understand the rhetorical and communicative practices necessary for a life of engaged civic action. Representations of Women’s Oppressions in Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, and Emma

This study examines Jane Austen’s realistic interpretations of eighteenth-century English society with a particular focus on representing women’s oppressions in Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, and Emma. Austen, in these three novels, criticizes several issues related to women’s status in English society and focuses on how men and women should be treated equally. In the novels, she argues that English society creates social order, women’s oppressiveness, and gender inequality through arbitrary social norms and traditions. This paper mainly focuses on two areas that restrict women’s roles in their society: the marriage plot and the educational system. Austen’s purpose of presenting these issues is to voice women’s rights and improve their conditions. She also offers her readers unusual descriptions of female characters in order to correct the stereotypical images of women during the period. Finally, this paper aims to show Austen’s success in redefining women’s status and change the misconceptions of women in British society.

Jane Eyre som adaption – analys av berättartekniska förändringar i två adaptioner av Charlotte Brontës roman

Uppsatsen analyserar förändringar i berättartekniken när Charlotte Brontës roman Jane Eyre adapteras till serieroman och till film. Syftet med uppsatsen är att undersöka hur de berättartekniska aspekterna intrig, tid och berättare kan förändras vid adaptioner från roman till serieroman och till film, samt vilka didaktiska begränsningar och möjligheter adaptioner medför för lärare som ämnar arbeta med adaptioner. Uppsatsen utgår från en komparativ metod med hjälp av adaptionsteori, och av berättartekniska analysverktyg som är hämtade från bl.a. narratologin. Analysen visar att intrigen är möjlig att överföra från roman till andra medier, medan tid och berättare kräver ombearbetning. Vidare visar diskussionen att svensklärare som överväger att erbjuda sina elever att ta del av skönlitteratur via andra medier än böcker bör vara observanta på vilka förändringar som adaptioner medför och hur det påverkar undervisningsmöjligheterna.
