Exploring the mathematics that children read in the world: A case study of Grade 8 learners in a South African School

Mokotedi, Lesego Brenda 07 May 2012 (has links) (PDF)
This paper presents a qualitative study in which an attempt was made to extend the debate surrounding the use of real life contexts to make mathematics more meaningful and real. The study investigated Grade 8 learners’ knowledge of number, understanding of number concepts and the kinds of connections they make between number and the context in which number is used. An important aspect of the study’s methodological approach involved an examination of the comments that learners made about what they said they know about number. A response to the question: “Why is the number in the picture?” provided a framework for establishing how learners saw relationships between number and the context in which numbers are used. A face scenario with four questions was given to learners to elicit these relationships. Results pointed to the usefulness of real life contexts as tools that have a central role in uncovering what learners know about number and how they use that knowledge to understand situations that call for proficiency in mathematics.

Approaching Concept Drift by Context Feature Partitioning

Hoffmann, Nico, Kirmse, Matthias, Petersohn, Uwe 20 February 2012 (has links) (PDF)
In this paper we present a new approach to handle concept drift using domain-specific knowledge. More precisely, we capitalize known context features to partition a domain into subdomains featuring static class distributions. Subsequently, we learn separate classifiers for each sub domain and classify new instances accordingly. To determine the optimal partitioning for a domain we apply a search algorithm aiming to maximize the resulting accuracy. In practical domains like fault detection concept drift often occurs in combination with imbalances data. As this issue gets more important learning models on smaller subdomains we additionally use sampling methods to handle it. Comparative experiments with artificial data sets showed that our approach outperforms a plain SVM regarding different performance measures. Summarized, the partitioning concept drift approach (PCD) is a possible way to handle concept drift in domains where the causing context features are at least partly known.

Historisk empatisk förmåga i praktiken : En kvalitativ undersökning om hur elever i årskurs ett resonerar kring historia.

Lundin, Jenny January 2015 (has links)
SO

Hur kontexter påverkar kommunikationen mellan myndigheter

Sahlsten, Marie, Couture, Julie January 2018 (has links)
Hur påverkar olika faktorer i kontexter myndigheters kommunikation? / The Swedish welfare society should ensure everyone in Sweden a fundamental welfare. Our welfare system to capture the Swedish citizens requires the authorities to communicate with each other. Lacks in communication between authorities have emerged in, among other things, the media. Therefore, the purpose of the study is to increase understanding of the difference in communication between the authorities in the regular context and the context of the individual collaborative team in Halland. How do different factors in contexts affect the communication between authorities? What distinguishes the communication in the context of the individual collaborative context with regular contexts? We have chosen to use a deductive approach during the study. The methods we used to get our empirical work consists of qualitative interviews with two individual collaborators in Halland. We then analyzed the empirical material we got with a content analysis using a theory. The result shows that the difference between different government configurations can affect the communication. What our communication distinguishes in different contexts, according to our study, has been found to be that the message in ordinary cases takes longer to reach the recipient and risks becoming more misinterpreted.

Italské názvy barev a jejich syntagmatika - korpusová analýza / Italian noun denoting colors and their collocations - a corpus analysis

ŠTIKAROVÁ, Pavla January 2016 (has links)
The subject of this thesis is to investigate the Italian names of colours, placing them into context and issue of translation of the names of colours into Czech. The thesis has two parts. The first part theoretical deals in general with colours and colour terms, colour perception, symbologies, research and etymology. This thesis also analyse the process of colour perception throughout history and in the evolution of humans. In the practical part we will then get through five subdivisions to the terms from the area of biology (the names of plants and animals), in which there occurs any of Italian names of colours then we get to idiomatic expressions, uniting with the verb, comparison and collocation, in which there also occur terms indicating colours. In all of these five areas, we analyse similarity between the two languages by using analogous databases in Czech language and translation into Czech language. The aim of this thesis is delimitation of colour terms in the Italian language, their definition, putting into context, confrontation of loose and established closer links and also their comparison with Czech.

Optická komunikace u rodu \kur{Anolis} a sociální kontext / Optical communication in the genus \kur{Anolis} and social context

VÖRÖS, Jan January 2014 (has links)
This work focuses on the optical communication of the Green Anole lizard. Experiment group consisted of eleven specimen, six males and five females, each being kept separately. The animals were being kept at constant temperature and humidity levels. Seven predetermined behavior patterns were examined, occuring during a contact of two specimen, wheter two males or a male and a female. For each behavior pattern, three time data were measured duration, frequency and latency. When examining two males, size difference and territorial status of territory owner/intruder were taken into account. Each interaction was documented, in total sixty videos were made, each fifteen minutes long. The territory status positively influenced the duration and latency of Headbob C, size difference positively influenced the duration and latency of Nuchal crest and the latency of Extended throat. Sex of the animal positively influenced the duration of Dewlap. Territorial status, size differnce or sex had no influence on the rest of the behavior patterns.

An analysis of the link between homosexuality and faith

Salih Ibrahim, Helles January 2018 (has links)
Gay sexuality is seen as a great sin and consequently punishable in several countries in parts of the Muslim community’s. Homosexual persons are being subjected to related violence and dignity because of the expression of their gender, sexuality or honorary norms. The purpose of this paper is to find out how homosexual Muslims living in the city of Umeå unite their sexual orientation with their beliefs and see if they believe Islam as a religious obstacle or if there are other cultural phenomena that prevent them from ”coming out” The result of this study shows that the majority of the interviewed people do not see religion as an obstacle to their sexual orientation, by questioning the hadith statements of trust. Respondents argue that Hadith literature came a long way after the death of Prophet Muhammad. The majority of the interviewed claims that the Hadith literature is human constructions that were written down long after the death of Prophet Muhammad.
