Petrophysics and fluid mechanics of selected wells in Bredasdorp Basin South Africa

Ile, Anthony January 2013 (has links)
Magister Scientiae - MSc / Pressure drop within a field can be attributed to several factors. Pressure drop occurs when fractional forces cause resistance to flowing fluid through a porous medium. In this thesis, the sciences of petrophysics and rock physics were employed to develop understanding of the physical processes that occurs in reservoirs. This study focussed on the physical properties of rock and fluid in order to provide understanding of the system and the mechanism controlling its behaviour. The change in production capacity of wells E-M 1, 2, 3, 4&5 prompted further research to find out why the there will be pressure drop from the suits of wells and which well was contributing to the drop in production pressure. The E-M wells are located in the Bredasdorp Basin and the reservoirs have trapping mechanisms of stratigraphical and structural systems in a moderate to good quality turbidite channel sandstone. The basin is predominantly an elongated north-west and south-east inherited channel from the synrift sub basin and was open to relatively free marine circulation. By the southwest the basin is enclose by southern Outeniqua basin and the Indian oceans. Sedimentation into the Bredasdorp basin thus occurred predominantly down the axis of the basin with main input direction from the west. Five wells were studied E-M1, E-M2, E-M3, E-M4, and E-M5 to identify which well is susceptible to flow within this group. Setting criteria for discriminator the result generated four well as meeting the criteria except for E-M1. The failure of E-M1 reservoir well interval was in consonant with result showed by evaluation from the log, pressure and rock physics analyses for E-M1.iv Various methods in rock physics were used to identify sediments and their conditions and by applying inverse modelling (elastic impedance) the interval properties were better reflected. Also elastic impedance proved to be an economical and quicker method in describing the lithology and depositional environment in the absence of seismic trace.

[en] DISCRETE PRECODING AND ADJUSTED DETECTION FOR MULTIUSER MIMO SYSTEMS WITH PSK MODULATION / [pt] PRECODIFICAÇÃO DISCRETA E DETECÇÃO CORRESPONDENTE PARA SISTEMAS MIMO MULTIUSUÁRIO QUE UTILIZAM MODULAÇÃO PSK

ERICO DE SOUZA PRADO LOPES 10 September 2021 (has links)
[en] With an increasing number of antennas in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, the energy consumption and costs of the corresponding front ends become relevant. In this context, a promising approach is the consideration of low-resolution data converters. In this study two novel optimal precoding branch-and-bound algorithms constrained to constant envelope signals and phase quantization are proposed. The first maximizes the minimum distance to the decision threshold (MMDDT) at the receivers, while the second minimizes the MSE between the users data symbols and the receive signal. This MMDDT design presented in this study is a generalization of prior designs that rely on 1-bit quantization. Moreover, unlike the prior MMSE design that relies on 1-bit resolution, the proposed MMSE approach employs uniform phase quantization and the bounding step in the branch-and-bound method is different in terms of considering the most restrictive relaxation of the nonconvex problem, which is then utilized for a suboptimal design also. Moreover, three different soft detection methods and an iterative detection and decoding scheme that allow the utilization of channel coding in conjunction with low-resolution precoding are proposed. Besides an exact approach for computing the extrinsic information, two approximations with reduced computational complexity are devised. The proposed branch-and-bound precoding algorithms are superior to the existing methods in terms of bit error rate. Numerical results show that the proposed approaches have significantly lower complexity than exhaustive search. Finally, results based on an LDPC block code indicate that the proposed receive processing schemes yield a lower bit-error-rate compared to the conventional design.

Settling-Time Improvements in Positioning Machines Subject to Nonlinear Friction Using Adaptive Impulse Control

Hakala, Tim 31 January 2006 (has links) (PDF)
A new method of adaptive impulse control is developed to precisely and quickly control the position of machine components subject to friction. Friction dominates the forces affecting fine positioning dynamics. Friction can depend on payload, velocity, step size, path, initial position, temperature, and other variables. Control problems such as steady-state error and limit cycles often arise when applying conventional control techniques to the position control problem. Studies in the last few decades have shown that impulsive control can produce repeatable displacements as small as ten nanometers without limit cycles or steady-state error in machines subject to dry sliding friction. These displacements are achieved through the application of short duration, high intensity pulses. The relationship between pulse duration and displacement is seldom a simple function. The most dependable practical methods for control are self-tuning; they learn from online experience by adapting an internal control parameter until precise position control is achieved. To date, the best known adaptive pulse control methods adapt a single control parameter. While effective, the single parameter methods suffer from sub-optimal settling times and poor parameter convergence. To improve performance while maintaining the capacity for ultimate precision, a new control method referred to as Adaptive Impulse Control (AIC) has been developed. To better fit the nonlinear relationship between pulses and displacements, AIC adaptively tunes a set of parameters. Each parameter affects a different range of displacements. Online updates depend on the residual control error following each pulse, an estimate of pulse sensitivity, and a learning gain. After an update is calculated, it is distributed among the parameters that were used to calculate the most recent pulse. As the stored relationship converges to the actual relationship of the machine, pulses become more accurate and fewer pulses are needed to reach each desired destination. When fewer pulses are needed, settling time improves and efficiency increases. AIC is experimentally compared to conventional PID control and other adaptive pulse control methods on a rotary system with a position measurement resolution of 16000 encoder counts per revolution of the load wheel. The friction in the test system is nonlinear and irregular with a position dependent break-away torque that varies by a factor of more than 1.8 to 1. AIC is shown to improve settling times by as much as a factor of two when compared to other adaptive pulse control methods while maintaining precise control tolerances.

Övning : Strategier, resurser och effektivitet ur ett designteoretiskt perspektiv / Practice : Strategies, resources and efficiency from a perspective of design theory

Kohring, Bajo January 2016 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to explore how practice can be designed in a meaningful and effective way. The research question is: What kind of semiotic resources do I use during practice thirds on the violin? The study is based on technical exercises used over a period of one year, the used method is video observations and logbook notes and the perspective is design theoretical. Two themes are presented as result: Semiotic resources for documentation and Semiotic resources for motivation and progression. In the last chapter, I discuss, problematize and compare the result with literature and research in the field.

On specification and inference in the econometrics of public procurement

Sundström, David January 2016 (has links)
In Paper [I] we use data on Swedish public procurement auctions for internal regularcleaning service contracts to provide novel empirical evidence regarding green publicprocurement (GPP) and its effect on the potential suppliers’ decision to submit a bid andtheir probability of being qualified for supplier selection. We find only a weak effect onsupplier behavior which suggests that GPP does not live up to its political expectations. However, several environmental criteria appear to be associated with increased complexity,as indicated by the reduced probability of a bid being qualified in the postqualificationprocess. As such, GPP appears to have limited or no potential to function as an environmentalpolicy instrument. In Paper [II] the observation is made that empirical evaluations of the effect of policiestransmitted through public procurements on bid sizes are made using linear regressionsor by more involved non-linear structural models. The aspiration is typically to determinea marginal effect. Here, I compare marginal effects generated under both types ofspecifications. I study how a political initiative to make firms less environmentally damagingimplemented through public procurement influences Swedish firms’ behavior. Thecollected evidence brings about a statistically as well as economically significant effect onfirms’ bids and costs. Paper [III] embarks by noting that auction theory suggests that as the number of bidders(competition) increases, the sizes of the participants’ bids decrease. An issue in theempirical literature on auctions is which measurement(s) of competition to use. Utilizinga dataset on public procurements containing measurements on both the actual and potentialnumber of bidders I find that a workhorse model of public procurements is bestfitted to data using only actual bidders as measurement for competition. Acknowledgingthat all measurements of competition may be erroneous, I propose an instrumental variableestimator that (given my data) brings about a competition effect bounded by thosegenerated by specifications using the actual and potential number of bidders, respectively. Also, some asymptotic results are provided for non-linear least squares estimatorsobtained from a dependent variable transformation model. Paper [VI] introduces a novel method to measure bidders’ costs (valuations) in descending(ascending) auctions. Based on two bounded rationality constraints bidders’costs (valuations) are given an imperfect measurements interpretation robust to behavioraldeviations from traditional rationality assumptions. Theory provides no guidanceas to the shape of the cost (valuation) distributions while empirical evidence suggeststhem to be positively skew. Consequently, a flexible distribution is employed in an imperfectmeasurements framework. An illustration of the proposed method on Swedishpublic procurement data is provided along with a comparison to a traditional BayesianNash Equilibrium approach.

Καφέ, Φιλομήλα 11 July 2013 (has links)
The technological evolution and market requirements have led to an increasing demand of low - power portable devices, featuring the reduced size of the devises and high efficiency. This M.Sc project deals with the design of analog integrated, Log - Domain filters, for low - voltage implementation, with large time - constants. In this direction, the design of a second order, low - pass filter, with the above features, and with the occupied silicon area maintained at very low levels, was achieved. In Chapters 1 and 2, an introduction to the design of integrated circuits in low voltage environment is presented. There is an introduction to the idea and the basic principles of Log - Domain filters. The key characteristics of circuits in a large signal operation point of view, and an analysis of the operators and the exponential transconductor cells are, also presented. Furthermore, the basic Log - Domain integrators has been analyzed. A topologic analysis of second order Log - Domain filters is given in Chapter 3. Filters has been initially designed firstly with the classic implementation, using Log - Domain equivalent of passive elements. In a second step, the filter has been realizes by employing the signal flow diagram (SFG) representation. These filters were simulated with the Analog Design environment of the Cadence software. the obtained simulation results confirmed the correct operation of the circuit. Two implementations for realizing the Log - Domain equivalent of a capacitor multiplier are introduced. In addition, implementations of new Log - Domain integrators, that use the capacitor multipliers, are given in Chapter 4. Using these implementations, Log - Domain filters, with reduced total area and large time - constants, are designed, simulated and characterized in Chapter 5. Finally, the layout design of a second - order has been performed in Chapter 6 and the provided post - layout simulation results show that the performance of the filter was close to that of the filter realized in schematic level.

Brien, Marie-Claude 12 1900 (has links)
This master’s thesis is about the colonization context and forestry exploitation of eastern white cedar (Thuya occidentalis) in the Montreal hinterland of the 19th century. On the one hand, it aims to document the local exploitation strategies of eastern white cedar and the evolution of the domestic cultural landscape of colonial landholdings since their initial concession. On the other hand, this thesis seeks to identify the exchange networks of the cedar timber that was shipped to Montreal for the construction of the city’s buildings and port facilities. With the near absence of historical documentation on the subject, only the application of the dendrochronology and the dendroprovenancing allows us to attain our objectives. We present a detailed analysis of six rural sites in the Ottawa and the Upper Saint Lawrence Valleys. Dendrochronology analysis of these areas enables us to tackle colonial establishment in an original way. The second part of this thesis is dedicated to the dendroprovenancing analysis of seven Montreal sites, all studied beforehand by Poudret-Barré (2007) and the Groupe de recherches en dendrochronologie historique (GRDH). To do so, the previously designated sites will serve as a geographic anchor point to help us determine the origin of the pieces of eastern white cedar found in Montreal. Our study of eastern white cedar along with the results of the dendrochronology and dendroprovenancing analysis allows us to tackle the architectural and archeological heritage from a new angle. Completing the available history data, it also opens the way to new research of the same kind.

Extraction automatique de protocoles de communication pour la composition de services Web / Automatic extraction of communication protocols for web services composition

Musaraj, Kreshnik 13 December 2010 (has links)
Business process management, service-oriented architectures and their reverse engineering heavily rely on the fundamental endeavor of mining business process models and Web service business protocols from log files. Model extraction and mining aim at the (re)discovery of the behavior of a running model implementation using solely its interaction and activity traces, and no a priori information on the target model. Our preliminary study shows that : (i) a minority of interaction data is recorded by process and service-aware architectures, (ii) a limited number of methods achieve model extraction without knowledge of either positive process and protocol instances or the information to infer them, and (iii) the existing approaches rely on restrictive assumptions that only a fraction of real-world Web services satisfy. Enabling the extraction of these interaction models from activity logs based on realistic hypothesis necessitates: (i) approaches that make abstraction of the business context in order to allow their extended and generic usage, and (ii) tools for assessing the mining result through implementation of the process and service life-cycle. Moreover, since interaction logs are often incomplete, uncertain and contain errors, then mining approaches proposed in this work need to be capable of handling these imperfections properly. We propose a set of mathematical models that encompass the different aspects of process and protocol mining. The extraction approaches that we present, issued from linear algebra, allow us to extract the business protocol while merging the classic process mining stages. On the other hand, our protocol representation based on time series of flow density variations makes it possible to recover the temporal order of execution of events and messages in the process. In addition, we propose the concept of proper timeouts to refer to timed transitions, and provide a method for extracting them despite their property of being invisible in logs. In the end, we present a multitask framework aimed at supporting all the steps of the process workflow and business protocol life-cycle from design to optimization. The approaches presented in this manuscript have been implemented in prototype tools, and experimentally validated on scalable datasets and real-world process and web service models. The discovered business protocols, can thus be used to perform a multitude of tasks in an organization or enterprise.

Inventaire Futile: experiência, autoria e linguagens entrelaçadas no ensino-aprendizagem de francês língua estrangeira na escola / Inventaire futile: experience, authorship and intertwined languages on teaching and learning French as a foreign language at school

Nishimura, Sahsha Kiyoko Watanabe Dellatorre 26 October 2018 (has links)
This research had the objective of encouraging reflections on experience, authorship and intertwined languages on teaching and learning French as a foreign language in a school context through analysis and discussion of problematizations and themes presented in the format of an Inventaire Futile, a writing exercise performed by Roland Barthes (1975) and Jean-Pierre Jeunet (1989), among others, and which is based on enumeration and lists (Eco, 2009). Every inventory theme has emerged from interactions within French classes taught at the Secondary School of the School of Application of the School of Education at the University of São Paulo (EA-FEUSP) since 2010, but specially in the period from 2014 to 2018. It also emerged from students\' accounts on their journal de bord - a quarterly proposal for extra-class activity. Researches on education (Meirieu, 2005; Freire, 2015; Masschelein & Simons, 2015), mainly post-criticism ones (Silva, 2008; Larrosa, 2002, 2008, 2011; Corazza, 2013), and researches on postmethod for teaching foreign languages (Kumaravadivelu, 1994, 2003, 2006) provided the theoretical foundation for us to study and analyze such interactions. It allowed us to learn the perspectives of those who teach and of those who learn a foreign language by confronting what was proposed for teaching with what was reported by the students.

Contribuição ao conhecimento do meio físico da região do lixão de São Carlos - SP, através de estudos geológicos, geofísicos, topográficos e químicos / Contribution to environment\'s knowledge of the Sao Carlos - SP waste dump area - by geological, geophysical, topographical and chemical studies

Álvares, Cyro Martins Bicudo 13 June 2000 (has links)
For seventeen years, Sao Carlos\' solid wastes were placed in a gully formed in a sedimentary area, on the Botucatu Formation (friable sandstone and sands), without any form of control to prevent the contamination of the environment and, especially, of the ground water. Thanks to the possibility of contamination of the deep water source, a series of studies have been made in the area since the eighties. These studies were just another attempt, along with severaI others, to increase the knowledge of the environmental conditions surrounding the waste dump area. Being part of a greater project, different sciences were used such as geology, geophysics, topography and chemistry, in order to obtain new elements and a more acurate interpretation to the existing knowledge. Geologicaly, we detected a less hydraulicaly conductive silty sand layers and, probably, silicificated sandstone layers or diabase sill which could protect the deep water sources from being contaminated. Geologic mapping and geophysical techniques such as electric surveys and well logs were performed during the process. Chemically, we evaluated the ground water contamination in relation to the flow\'s direction.
