Loneliness in the WorkplaceWright, Sarah Louise January 2005 (has links)
Loneliness in the workplace has received relatively little attention in the literature. The research surrounding loneliness tends to focus almost exclusively on personal characteristics as the primary determinant of the experience, and largely ignores the workplace as a potential trigger of loneliness. As such, personality tends to be overestimated as the reason for loneliness, whilst only modest emphasis is given to environmental factors, such as organisational environments. Therefore, the overall aim of this thesis was to explore the notion of loneliness in the workplace, with a particular emphasis on examining the antecedents and outcomes of its development in work contexts. The first stage of the research included the development and empirical examination of a scale measuring work-related loneliness. A 16-item scale was constructed and tested for its reliability and factor structure on a sample of 514 employees from various organisations. Exploratory factor analysis indicated two factors best represent the data, namely Social Companionship and Emotional Deprivation at Work. For the main study, a theoretical model was constructed whereby various antecedents (personal characteristics, social support, job characteristics, and emotional climate) were hypothesised to influence the development of work-related loneliness, which in turn was thought to affect employee attitudes and wellbeing. Employees from various organisations were invited to participate in the online research via email, which generated 362 submissions from diverse occupational groups. Structural equation modelling techniques were used to assess the hypothesised model, which was evaluated against a number of fit criteria. The initial results provided limited support for the Loneliness at Work Model. Consequently, a number of adjustments were necessary to obtain sufficient fit. The modified model suggests that organisational climate (comprising climate of fear, community spirit at work, and organisational fit) serves to simultaneously predict the emotional deprivation factor of loneliness (made up of seven items) and employee attitude and wellbeing. The results indicate that environmental factors such as fear, lack of community spirit, and value congruence play a role in the experience of work-related loneliness and have an overall negative effect on employee withdrawal behaviours and job satisfaction. The findings from this study offer insight into possible areas for organisational intervention and future research.

Presentations of Oriental people as subordinated the West and their ideals was one way for Europeans to expand and keep control over their colonies in Africa during the nineteenth- and twentieth centuries. France and Great Britain controlled their colonies in different ways which has led to diverse legacies. Today, tourism is a source of revenue for former colonies, such as Tunisia and Kenya, and tourism also helps to spread knowledge and images of distant countries. A guidebook is one way that knowledge of other countries and people are spread to travelers. During history, images of distant people were based on a colonial discourse in which the west was seen as superior; but is that still the case? The purpose of this paper was to analyze how Tunisia and Kenya are presented in the Lonely Planet guide to Tunisia and the Lonely Planet guide to Kenya to investigate if they are constructed through a colonial discourse, and to see if there are any dissimilarities on how they are presented. With a postcolonial theory and critical discourse analysis and with a colonial discourse as framework, the guidebooks were examined to see how people and culture were presented. The research showed that Lonely Planet guidebooks use a colonial discourse in the presentation of Tunisia and Kenya where distinctions are made between the inhabitants and the western world. The Orient was subordinated the superior Occident which reinforces the notion of others as being different and less than the west. Diversities between how Tunisia and Kenya were drawn in the guidebooks were found. The colonial heritage was more present in Tunisia than in Kenya, while in Kenya the people were presented as more brutal than in Tunisia. Reasons for that could be many, but the critical issue is why the western world still constructs other people as subordinate and different.

This essay is an ecocritical analysis on William Wordsworths “I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud” and Edgar Allan Poes “Alone”. It investigates the depiction of nature, the space within nature poetry and the common theme of loneliness in the poems. The ecocritical perspective plays the main part of this essay because of the similarity between the ecocriticism and romantic poetry in the upliftment of nature, and the erasure of the dividing line between human and nature. The main material is Timothy Mortons Ecology without nature, Jane Bennetts Vibrant Matter and Scott Knickerbockers Ecopoetics. The results of the essay show how the depiction of nature contributes to the representation of the poet’s emotion and relation to nature and the past. It shows how the space, the distance between human and nature, maintains because we can’t get closer to nature than through figurations, anthropomorphisms. It also shows how the loneliness further establishes the space and is quite different between Wordsworth and Poe, whereas Wordsworth doesn’t feel as alone as Poe because of his closer relation to nature.

本研究的主要目的在探討下列的關係:
1•寂寞感是否因性別、年齡不同而有所差異?
2•自我意識和寂寞感的關係為何?不同自我意識程度者,其寂寞感是否不同?
3•自我坦露與寂寞感有何關係?不同自我坦露方式,其寂寞感是否不同?
4•性別、年齡、自我意識、自我坦露與寂寞感有何關係?
本研究以大台北地區高中和大學生為對象,研究工具包括(1)寂寞量表,(2)自
我意識量表,(3)自我坦露量表,(4)個人排遣時間方式。研究中主要使用的統
計方法為:多變項變異數分析、變異數分析、Scheffe′法事後考驗等。
研究結果如下:
1•年齡在寂寞感程度上:就寂寞感總量表、寂寞無助、缺乏友伴、歸屬感弱而言,
皆不因年齡不同而有差異。
2•性別在寂寞或程度上有顯著差異:其中就總量表言,無差異,男生在寂寞無助上
得分較高,女生在歸屬感弱得分較高。
3•自我意識與寂寞感有顯著關係:其中「個人自我意識」與寂寞感呈顯著負相關,
「公眾自我意」與寂寞感呈不顯著零相關,「社會焦慮」與寂寞感呈極顯著正相關。
4•自我坦露與寂寞感呈顯著相關:就中學組言,對母親、父親、男女性朋友、老師
的坦露均呈顯著負相關;而就大學組而言,則對父親、母親、男女性朋友的自我坦露
與寂寞感呈顯寞負相關,對老師的自我坦露與寂寞感無關,並且自我坦露程度不同,
其寂寞感有不同的程度。
綜合以上結果,加以討論,並對教育及輔導工作提出若干建議。

This diploma thesis deals with the criticism of communism in the novels of three African-American writers: Richard Wright Native Son and The Outsider, Chester Himes Lonely Crusade and Ralph Ellison Invisible Man. The main characters of their novels, mainly African-Americans, were directly confronted with racial prejudices, injustice during the Great Depression. These unfavorable living situations brought them to the Marxist Ideology. The Communist Party in USA was attractive for African-Americans because their program included the fight for racial equality. After the initial excitement of Marxist Ideology came indignation and disappointment.

Considering that the greatest fear of deploying military personnel is separation from family, an obvious and overlooked psychological phenomenon that merits further investigation is loneliness. In this study, 131 US troops completed the UCLA Loneliness Scale, Anxiety Control Questionnaire, and a leisurely activity participation scale to predict loneliness with participation in non-work activities in the presence of another moderator (locus of control) and various demographic factors. As hypothesized, the results indicated that 1) the best non-work activity predictors of loneliness were emailing friends and listening to music, 2) external locus of control was positively correlated with loneliness and internal locus of control was negatively correlated with loneliness, and 3) loneliness was positively correlated with length of time deployed.
