A contribuição da indústria da manufatura no desenvolvimento de software / The contribution of manufacturing industry in software development

Katayama, Eduardo Teruo 20 October 2011 (has links)
Agile methods appeared in the late 90\'s as an alternative approach to the classic prescriptive planning approaches to software development. They propose a new style of development, eliminating excessive and bureaucratic documentation, and emphasizing the interactions between people collaborating to achieve high productivity and deliver high-quality software. In the last few years, several principles and practices based on the manufacturing industry were incorporated by Agile software development. One of the principles absorbed is to improve the effectiveness of an organization through an overall improvement. Although this principle is quite widespread in Agile Methods, using it is not an easy task. It is not easy to get the big picture of the development process. Moreover, to achieve overall improvements is necessary to discover the cause of possible problems, which can also be a difficult task. This work investigates two approaches in the manufacturing industry that shares the assumption that the whole organization is focused on overall throughput, not on micro-optimization. Based on then, three approaches to existing software development are analyzed. Finally, a comparative study was done to assess the main characteristics of the studied methods.

Débora Helal 20 October 2017 (has links)
As in lean literature, little has been addressed about sustainability in healthcare settings. Considering the high failure rates of lean initiatives reported in the literature, this paper aims to test, through a case study in a hospital, the critical success factors for sustainability in healthcare settings reported in literature. To accomplish that it was necessary to identify in the literature the critical success factors for lean and lean healthcare. They were grouped and consolidated into 17 critical factors. From these, 24 theoretical propositions were prepared to be tested in the hospital used as a case study. As a result, 15 propositions could be confirmed with the evidence from the case, while 6 were divergent from that was predicted in the literature and 3 did not have enough data for analysis. The divergences were related to the critical factors strategic alignment, organizational culture, employee involvement and project duration. From the divergent propositions, this work contributes with new suggested propositions that were based on the evidence of the case study.

Self-Efficacy and Leadership Commitment During Lean Strategy Deployment

Pearson, Angela Deloise 01 January 2019 (has links)
Lean strategy deployment (LSD) provides a means to create lasting value at reduced cost; yet most LSD efforts fail to attain sustainable improvements. The current study sought to gain an understanding of how leaders in oral healthcare manufacturing setting in the northeastern region of the United States can apply self-efficacy and leadership commitment during an LSD. Using Bandura’s theory of self-efficacy this qualitative phenomenological study examined the lived experiences and perceptions of 15 mid-to-senior level managers, concerning the use of self-efficacy and leadership commitment during a lean strategy deployment (LSD). The key findings resulted in 10 emergent themes. The top 3 highly regarded themes that emerged from this study were: (1) committing to a lean strategy deployment, (2) communicating lessons learned/changes, and (3) bringing the best out of employees. LSDs are not easy to implement. Many companies attempt to carry out lean activities and many of these same companies fail to have successful results. To be effective, leaders should focus on creating sound practices and give more attention to the human behaviors and leadership characteristics needed to support eliminating barriers and creating a lean culture.

Impact of BIM/LEAN on the interaction of construction project design teams

Herrera Valencia, Rodrigo Fernando 14 December 2020 (has links)
[EN] Design teams of construction projects are composed of different stakeholders; this fact could make the interactions difficult. BIM and Lean methodologies have a positive impact on construction projects. Besides, there is evidence of the combined implementation of BIM and Lean; however, it is not known the empirical relationship between Lean practices and BIM uses in the design phase. Also, there is not a deeper understanding of the social phenomena that are generated among design teams when BIM-Lean management methodologies are implemented. Therefore, the objective of this research is to understand the impact of Lean design management (LDM) practices, and BIM uses in the interaction of construction project design teams. The research method has two phases: (1) the creation of tools to assess the level of implementation of LDM practices and BIM uses and to understand the interactions in a design team; and (2) the relationship analyses between BIM, Lean, and interaction, based on empirical information from construction projects in the design phase. The results present a BIM uses assessment tool and an LDM practices questionnaire to measure the design management and a method to understand the different types of interaction in a design team. Based on data from 64 projects, a chi-square analysis revealed 33 empirical relationships between BIM uses and LDM practices; also, the application of BIM uses implies a greater application of LDM practices. The project that applies BIM-Lean management achieves many interactions among its design team; transparent, orderly, and standardized information flows; a collaborative, trust, and learning environment; and commitment management. All these interaction elements are not visible in the project, where BIM-lean management was not applied. / Herrera Valencia, RF. (2020). Implementation of lean within the cement industry

Tourki, Taher January 2010 (has links)
Implementation of lean helps many organizations to improve their productivity and efficiency; on the other hand numerous organizations have failed to benefit from lean philosophy. The lean thinking was originated in the automobile manufacturing sector and it widely spreads within the discrete industries; however the today’s challenge is to implement the lean philosophy within continuous manufacturing industries and different organizations regardless to the type, size, or mission of the applicant organization. This has motivated the undertaken research to propose a standard generic transition steps which can be adopted by different organizations in order to become lean. The cement industry is ideal example of the continuous industry sector and it will be used to demonstrate that the lean philosophy is applicable to all deferent organisation types. There are numerous challenges facing the cement industry in today’s competitive environments; one of the major challenges is the capability of the cement industry to adopt and introduce the improvement approaches and techniques by which the overall enhancement can be achieved. The need for improving the efficiency of the cement production line is widely acknowledged in order to reduce the downtime rates, and satisfy high levels of market demand where the demand for cement is mostly second substance behind water. In response to this respect this thesis has investigated and addressed the implementation of the lean philosophy within the cement industry. The main contribution of this study is to convey the message to the decision makers that the lean philosophy is the proposed solution by which the continuous industry and different organisation types can be improved through eliminating or minimising wastes and non-value added activities within the production line.

Lean accounting : En undersökning av lean accounting i Svenska företag inom tillverkningsindustrin / Lean accounting : A survey of lean accounting in Swedish companies in the manufacturing industry

Brihs, Julia, Zandhers, Elvira January 2016 (has links)
As a result of globalization and increased competition, the West's interest in lean production as a production system has grown and is the business development practice that is used to the greatest extent in Sweden. After an implementation of lean production, organizations have discovered that the traditional financial control needs to be adjusted because it counteracts leans values. In addition, the traditional financial reports do not highlight the changes that occur as a result of lean production, which could result in a decision to cancel the implementation of lean production. As a result, lean accounting, which is based on lean principles and methods, has been developed in order to support lean production. Despite the advantages of lean accounting the implementation is limited in Sweden according to proponents. The survey is based on a qualitative study with an abductive onset. Six respondents consisting of advocates and economists in companies with lean production was interviewed individually. The thesis together with the empirical data has been collected based on a hermeneutic approach, which result in the analysis and conclusion. The study shows that the limited implementation of lean depends on the economics department's inadequate participation in the implementation of lean production. As the lack of participation depends on the management's inability to engage and involve the finance department, the company's management may be a reason to the limited implementation of lean accounting. When management involve and encourage the finance departments to participate in the lean implementation, knowledge of lean’s values and principles increase which results in the development of methods and tools. However, there is a general ignorance of the concept of lean accounting, as a result the financial departments are not aware that they apply methods and tools that can be considered lean accounting. A consequence of the misleading perception regarding lean accountings limited implementation is the lack of good examples and lack of interest.

Exploring Lean in the Swedish Service Sector : Applicability, Success Factors and Challenges

Kuljancic, Adina, Khalaf, Cecilia, Andersson, Jenny January 2016 (has links)
Working Lean, i.e. “eliminating non-value activities from work processes by applying a robust set of performance change tools and emphasizing excellence in operations to deliver superior customer service,” has received significant attention and become a concept of interest for businesses, especially during recent years. Fundamentally, the concept of Lean is built on the aims of waste reduction and value creation with keywords such as continuous improvement, quality, and efficiency guiding the process. Lean was originally developed with production in mind, but many in the field argue that its applicability reaches further and holds potential within other contexts, such as service, as well. The purpose of this study is to derive lessons learned from individuals working in the service sector regarding whether or not Lean is applicable in the context of service and to explore what factors and challenges are perceived to influence the likeliness of success. An abductive approach has been pursued by the use of semistructured interviews with employees from different levels within organizations in the Swedish service sector. In addition, an external perspective by interviewing a Lean consultant has been of interest. The data gained has been analysed to identify patterns which have then been searched for in existing literature. The findings provide evidence that Lean is applicable in service. Furthermore, success factors related to the following core categories; employee engagement and competence, having a philosophical approach, leadership, management, implementation, organizational and national culture, and management of variation were identified. Lastly, a misconception of Lean, employee resistance and suboptimization were three challenges found.

Nordberg, Stefan, Andersson, Melissa January 2016 (has links)
Problem: High productivity is crucial for today's organizations in the pursuit of increased competitiveness. At the same time, research on motivation shows that individuals who experience intrinsic motivation are more productive. A work system that claims to increase efficiency and lead to a motivated workforce is lean. An industry where lean has taken hold is warehousing which faces constant demands for increased productivity and optimized production flows. Research on lean and its impact on employees, however, is contradictory. This is because lean is not a unitary concept but one that includes all aspects related to eliminating waste. Because of this, research seems to lack consensus on the effects of lean on employees. Motivation in combination with lean is also a relatively new area of research. Above all, there are few empirical studies on employees' perception of intrinsic motivation in lean based warehouse operations. Purpose:The purpose of the study is to provide knowledge and understanding if warehouse stock pickers in a lean-based warehouse operation experience intrinsic motivation. Furthermore, the study aims to identify how the studied warehouse operation are working with lean to highlight the impact of lean on intrinsic motivation. Method: The study is based on an interpretive social science perspective with a qualitative approach. To obtain knowledge and understanding regarding a specific case, we applied a case study research design using semi-structured interviews. The research approach is iterative where the study has fluctuated between theory and empirics until the final results. Furthermore, a thematic analysis was used for data processing Conclusion: The study revealed that the case company is working with lean according to the theoretical description of the concept. The results showed that employees feel meaningfulness in their work but that the work was perceived to contain a low degree of autonomy and feedback. The study therefore showed an ambiguous picture of the employees perceived intrinsic motivation. We could conclude that lean has both positive and negative effects on employees' intrinsic motivation. The positive effects consisted of a greater degree of participation and autonomy, improved social relationships, self-esteem and skills. The negative effects that could be identified was higher stress due to performance requirements and increased work intensity. We could thus conclude that lean had an immediate positive impact on employees' intrinsic motivation.

Hjalmarsson, Victoria January 2016 (has links)
Companies face new challenges almost every day. In order to stay competitive, it is important that companies strive for continuous development and improvement. By describing companies through their processes it is possible to get a clear overview of the entire operation, which can contribute, to a well-established overall understanding of the company. This is a case study based on Stort AB which is a small logistics company specialized in international transportation and logistics solutions. The purpose of this study is to perform value stream mapping in order to create a more efficient production process and propose possible improvements in order to reduce processing time. After performing value stream mapping, data envelopment analysis is used to calculate how lean Stort AB is today and how lean the company can become by implementing the proposed improvements. The results show that the production process can improve efficiency by minimizing waste produced by a bad workplace layout and over-processing. The authors suggested solution is to introduce standardized processes and invest in technical instruments in order to automate the process to reduce process time. According to data envelopment analysis the business is 41 percent lean at present and may soon become 55 percent lean and finally reach an optimum 100 percent lean mode if the process is automated.
