Justo, Jutta Cornelia Reuwsaat January 2009 (has links)
What influence does a program of continued formation for teachers in exercise in a school have? And concerning a program of education on the additive conceptual field in the performance of the pupils in additive mathematical problems, what influence can this program have? To answer these questions an experimental study in the initial years of Elementary School was developed, and two schools were studied, a private and a public one. With the objective to improve the performance of the pupils of the initial years in the resolution of additive mathematical problems, a program of continued formation for a group of teachers from the two schools was implemented to provide advances in the knowledge of the teaching and learning processes related to the additive conceptual field; to construct with these teachers an educational program that took in consideration the construction of meanings of the operations of addition and subtraction, the understanding of the semantic relations found in the additive mathematical problems, the teaching process of procedures, representations and metacognitive abilities. The study did not compare the public school and the private one, but involved the evaluation of the performance in additive problems of a total of 320 students from the initial years of Elementary School. From these 320, 167 pupils had also joined a program on teaching process of the additive problems. In this study, the majority of the experimental groups evidenced a higher improvement in their performance in comparison to the control groups. The most relevant tax of accuracy on the experimental groups could be explained by the program of continued formation which their teacher joined, as well as the program of education in which these students took part and was presented to them by their teachers. All these results are similar to other studies’ results in the area, which are related to school effectiveness on how the teacher affects more than what was previously expected, in relation with the performance of their pupils. These results evidence the importance of politics and action of continued formation of teachers in their own school and where all the teachers are involved. Those changes in some schools can be an initial step considering the improvement of the transformations that will, after a period of time, happen in more schools, what will qualify the teaching and the learning processes, what will change the idea that the mathematical knowledge is only possible for some students.

Using Internet as a supporting tool to the learning process of transportation engineering.

Laura Salime Hage de Souza 11 October 2001 (has links)
The aim of this work is to explore a fraction of the Internet potential as a supporting tool for the improvement of the learning process of a specific course in the Transportation Engineering field. This is accomplished through the application, in a regular course, of selected Internet resources and subsequent evaluation of the obtained results. The course, named Airports, Ports, and Inland Waterways, is part of the Civil Engineering core curriculum at the São Carlos School of Engineering - University of São Paulo. The teaching approach used for exploring Internet resources in the part of the course that deals with Ports and Inland Waterways did not eliminate the traditional classroom weekly meeting with the students, but took advantage of it to improve the process of distance education. In the approach proposed here, the students were organized in groups and asked to build a reference material with the aid of the lecturer in charge of the course. That material was later made available to the entire class through Internet, so that everyone could study it and evaluate it as well. The doubts arising from it could be discussed either in the classroom or directly with the lecturer. In addition to the results of the research carried out by the students, the environment built in Internet offered several other tools to support the learning process, such as: tests, libraries, agenda, and a management tool designed to track the individual performance of every student. The adaptation of the course to Internet has been done in a WebCT environment. That tool, which is a management system for distance education available for use at the University of São Paulo, has been designed by a Canadian university with the objective of stimulating the interactions among students themselves and with the course lecturer. The observed results seem to provide a strong evidence that Internet-based distance education might become an effective strategy for offering courses to Engineering students and professionals, and also to professionals of other technological areas. It can be a large-scale process without compromising the quality of the courses. Two points can be stressed, based on the evaluation of the results obtained with the application conducted here: the satisfaction level of the students with the course was not bad, and the proposed approach seems to be promising.

Ensino-aprendizagem em um contexto dinâmico - o caso de planejamento de transportes / Teaching-learning in a dynamic context – the case of transportation planning

Márcia de Andrade Pereira 17 March 2005 (has links)
The fast changes produced by the technological development and by the globalization process highlight the need for a new profile of an engineer that can meet the demands of the labor market and of the society. The emergence of new techniques and analyses tools is a natural consequence of that technological and scientific development and it should be immediately incorporated into courses with a strong technological basis, such as Engineering. The challenge to do so is the time constraint imposed to disciplines, which can no longer be increased to include additional topics. However, the hypothesis of this research is that although the new technologies are part of the problem, they can also provide the resources needed for its solution. In such a context, a new paradigm for the teaching learning process is required, in which not only the potential role of the computer itself and of the tools associated to are acknowledged, but also the different learning styles of the students should be taken into account. Therefore, the objective of this research work is to search and evaluation of alternatives for adapting the teaching-learning process to the context of fast and constant innovations currently observed. This is achieved by using multimedia resources for exploring concepts of constructivism, tested with the inclusion of innovative concepts in a Transportation Planning discipline. This experiment was meant to evaluate if the students would be able to grasp new topics along with the long-established contents with the proposed approach. The traditional paradigm was then combined with several pedagogical alternatives (team work, educational CD-ROM, research on Internet, WebCT, etc.) in a Civil Engineering attended by third-year students. The results found indicate that the alternatives considered have contributed to some extent, to the improvement of the traditional teaching method, bringing positive outcomes to the learning process. Therefore, one can conclude that this study brought a valuable contribution for Transportation Engineering education, given that the teaching-learning process was improved while making possible the inclusion of new topics even in a very inflexible grid course.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Carla Ramos de Paula II.pdf: 3336488 bytes, checksum: 75356d89363d57462c2f7917c18a9ea0 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2013-12-13 / This dissertation has as object of study the cartoon as an educational possibility for students of the Early Years of Elementary School from 1st to 5th grade. The study started from the following question: which aspects present in the Bakhtinian perspective of language and in the Methodology of Dialectical Mediation, articulately, enable the formulation of pedagogical proposals using cartoons in order to develop critical thinking in students of the Early Years of Elementary School? The overall goal was to present didactic propositions with the discourse genre cartoon , based on the postulations of the Methodology of Dialectical Mediation and in light of Bakhtin s theory, aiming at provoking critical reading of the cartoon by prompting immediate laughter. The specific goals were: to address the cartoon according to the Bakhtinian perspective of language; to discuss the introduction of cartoons in the teaching-learning process; to present the Methodology of Dialectical Mediation as a possibility of guiding the work with cartoons in the Early Years of Elementary School from 1st to 5th grade; and to relate the pedagogical work with cartoons and the possibility of development of criticality. In order to fulfill these objectives, we carried out literature and document review, guided by Bakhtin s perspective of language and by theorists that deal with the topic of cartoons: Flôres (2002), Teixeira (2005) and, specifically, Romualdo (2000). For the dialogue with the Methodology of Dialectal Mediation, we focused on the work of Oliveira, Almeida and Arnoni (2007). The cartoons constituting the corpus for the proposals of didactic procedures were collected from the Jornal de Charges (Cartoon Newspaper): (www.chargeonline.com.br). This study demonstrated the possibility of introducing the cartoon in the Early Years of Elementary School by means of the process of pedagogical mediation. In addition, we highlight that the pedagogical work with cartoons, by propitiating laughter for laughter s sake (immediate laughter) towards the apprehension of the criticism present in the genre, may foment the critical reading of the social fabric and, consequently, the development of the students critical thinking skills / Esta dissertação tem como objeto de estudo a charge como possibilidade pedagógica para o aluno dos Anos Iniciais do Ensino Fundamental 1º ano ao 5º ano.

Uma análise crítica de um recurso educacional aberto digital concebido para o ensino-aprendizagem da Estatística no Ensino Médio / A critical analysis of a digital open educational resource designed for the teaching-learning process of Statistics in high school

Diniz, Caio Cesar Santos 27 June 2016 (has links)
The evolution of technologies, along with the spread of the internet use, has provided us a wide range of tools that may be used in the teaching-learning process on basic education. Particularly, in the context of the teaching-learning process of Statistics in high school, it is possible to verify the existence of a huge number of open educational resources for that purpose. Thus, the problem that teachers have to face concerns the careful assessment of these resources for their use in the classroom. Therefore, through this dissertation, we aim to contribute to the advance of this topic proposing different criteria of analysis. The established set of criteria proved to be consistent and appropriate for the analysis of the investigated resource. We are able to conclude that depending on the quality of the resource and how it will be used by the teacher in the classroom, it may represent an effective contribution to the teaching-learning process of Statistics in high school. On the other hand, there is a risk that if a resource is not previously analyzed, it may eventually endorse wrong statistics concepts, as well as aggravate pre-existent difficulties in their learning process.

Lundgren, Berit January 2005 (has links)
Many immigrants in Sweden have not had the chance to learn to read and write, for various reasons. In Sweden, literacy is a prerequisite to being able to function in the cultural community, and for many immigrants this is the first time that they experience their inability to read and write as a handicap or see themselves as “illiterate”. The aim of this study is to use a socio-cultural, second language and gender approach to describe, analyse and understand how a number of adult, illiterate, immigrant women experience their situation when they are expected to simultaneously learn to speak, read and write Swedish. The study focuses on two literacy groups in two Swedish municipalities. In one of the groups I act as both teacher and researcher. The thesis is a case study of the learning process of five illiterate immigrant women in Sweden. The results are based on interviews, carried out with the help of an interpreter, and observation of teaching and texts ritten by the students. The study is based on the assumption that human learning is an activity that takes place in a cultural community in a social context. When learning a language, the language is simultaneously the tool that facilitates social communication and the object of the learning process. The study shows that cultural communities influence the women in different ways. Gender structures are firmly planted in a patriarchal value system, which means that women are seen as inferior to men, and women are expected to “meet the demands of others”. The women have no time to study at home, as their household duties are prioritised. However, there are subtle indications that there is a wish to change the situation in accordance with Swedish values and norms. This can be seen in the Swedish for Immigrants (SFI) lessons. As they have little contact with Swedes, school is the only arena in which they have a chance to use Swedish. They are positive towards teaching and school as an institution. Here they are able to develop an alternative identity. The study also shows that teaching in the literacy groups is to a great extent based on a technical approach, in which the teacher tries to elicit a correct answer from the students. Social interaction involving contemplation and negotiation is either not included or not prioritised. the women’s experience and knowledge is not made use of. There are, however, occasions when collaborative discussions take place between the teacher and students. On these occasions an exchange of experiences takes place. Learning is based on the students’ own experiences and thoughts. Linguistic concepts gain meaning in the collaborative discussion. Initially the concepts may be unclear, but the group works on them together, adapting and adjusting them until they finally make sense. Finally, I conclude that women immigrants bring their own socio-cultural values and experience to the school situation, which affects their learning process to varying degrees. Furthermore, immigrant women need more time at school, as it is the only arena in which they can spend time on studying and personal development. another conclusion is that the school must become a learning community that recognises the immigrants’ cultures, makes use of the students’ experience and allows the students to participate in collaborative discussions, so that they can develop their ability to speak, read and write Swedish.

Some teacher's thoughts about students individual development and students participation : Limited to students whit difficulties in reading and writing

Johansson Årebo, Sofie January 2013 (has links)
This is a qualitative study where I have chosen to investigate teachers’ work with student’s individual development and participation in their learning process, but I have restricted myself to students in year three with difficulties in reading and writing. I wanted to find out how some teachers think and feel about the concepts I have used above and find out how you can work to get students more involved in their learning process. To carry out this study, I have conducted interviews with four teachers qualified to teach students in grades three in Swedish as I picked through the convenience sample. I chose to do unstructured interviews in order to get closer to respondents and that their responses would be more profound and so explain what they think about the questions I asked. These interviews, I then processed by analyzing and interpreting them. The result do I also link to the zone of proximal development by Vygotskij, as I have as theoretical approach in my work. What I have found is that teachers work relatively the same with student’s individual development and participation in its learning process, but also that the teachers pressure much that it is important to support students and help them in different ways for them to reach the goals in reading and writing.

THE LET ME LEARN PROFESSIONAL LEARNING PROCESS FOR TEACHER TRANSFORMATION

Calleja, Colin 17 July 2013 (has links) (PDF)
This research set out to explore how a group of nine educators from a Catholic Church school in Malta, who have attended the Let Me Learn professional Learning process (LMLpLp), experienced personal and professional transformation. This study investigates those factors influencing participants in their transformative learning journey. It also explores the dynamics of transformative learning and whether individual transformation affects the school’s transformative learning experience. More specifically this study set out to explore how teachers who participated in the Let Me Learn professional Learning process have experienced transformative learning. This study takes a qualitative phenomenological approach. It seeks to identify phenomena of personal and professional transformative learning through the perceptions of the educators participating in this study. Through the use of the semi-structured interview it seeks to gather ‘deep’ data. This data represents the voices of these educators in narrative, thus emphasising the importance of the personal perspective and interpretation. This allowed this research to understand the subjective experience, motivation and actions of the participants. The Literature review informs the questions asked during the interview. The interview was used as a tool for gathering information regarding values, attitudes and beliefs of participants. Each interview was transcribed, translated (when response was given in Maltese) and categorised according to Mezirow’s ten stages. Excerpts from each stage were further processed to generate themes. The themes were later streamlined and an acceptable interpretive framework was created. Each interview excerpt was then analysed through the framework. Once all interviews were coded, detailed narratives were written. These narratives are meant to help the reader reflect on the process of transformative learning. It underscores those factors highlighted by the participants, which helped bring about both personal and professional transformative learning. This research has identified that individual constructs are strongly determined by an individual’s personal learning characteristics. Awareness of these personal learning characteristics (self-knowledge) helped educators assess their practice and understand how their personal characteristics were determining their approach to teaching and affecting their interpersonal relationships with students and colleagues. This research showed that transformative learning is a mutually interdependent experience. Individual transformation amounts to, and is influenced by, the collective transformation. This study highlighted the role of the school community in the pursuit of personal transformation. Yet another important finding of this research is the importance of a shared language of possibility. Through a shared language, a learning community can create a dialogic environment through which intentions, beliefs and interventions can be shared among the professional community. This research accentuates the importance of a shared language as a means of articulating a change in perspective. The study identified three main agents of change. The Let Me Learn team, as promoters and experts of this particular learning process; the teachers, who internalised the process and applied it to their practice; and the school’s senior management team, who internalised the Process, positioned it into the larger vision of the school and created a conducive environment through which the whole school community was empowered to take responsibility to bring about change in practice. A number of implications emerge from this study that could inform policy on teacher professional learning. A major implication concerns the importance of a shared language – a language that reflects the shared values and ideological position of the community. Such language frames the learning process, makes learning visible for teachers to be able to respond effectively with strategies that respect each learner’s learning preference and makes learning visible to the learner himself. Another implication from this study arises from the finding that the transformative learning process of any individual educator and effectively of the whole school community, goes beyond the effectiveness and limitations of any one professional development programme. True and deep-seated transformative learning comes from within the individual educator. This statement has serious repercussions on any professional development programme that aims to aid participants in their quest to transform their practice. This study also emphasised the importance that any professional development needs to be seated in the local experience and needs of the school community. Any attempts at developing comprehensive, nation-wide projects with pre-packaged approaches, are doomed to fail. What this research has shown is that for effective professional development, the identified outcomes need to correspond to the local needs of the school, rather than the national guidelines, detached from the realities of the particular school. Finally, this study accentuated the importance of incorporating mentoring support in any professional development proposal. Delivery of information and skills without follow-up tend to lead to superficial application. Transformative learning presupposes a period of shared reflection on practice and collegial mediation of ideas through contact between teachers and their leaders and on-the-job support from their professional development mentors.

Prescher, Thomas 10 February 2009 (has links) (PDF)

Ahlbom, Adam, Backlund, Johan January 2015 (has links)
This paper examines job-rotation in ICA-stores within the pedagogy of working life. The purpose of this study is to determine how job-rotation works in ICA-stores and its relevance to learning from a employee perspective. The area of learning that we are investigating is how individuals assimilate knowledge from their professions through learning processes and situations during a job-rotation. The theoretical tools used in this study are based on Ellströms views on the feed-forward and feed-back phases, on Ellströms three levels of learning to conceptualise the act of learning, and finally on the theory of the subjective and objective spaces of action in regards to the learning situation. The paper mentions Börnfelts theories of formal and informal organisation as well. We used a qualitative method based on open interviews with eight employees from different ICA-stores, varied in both location and size. All interviews have been transcribed and analysed into four themes: The Content of the Work, Daily Obstacles/everyday situation, Formal Teamwork, and Informal Relations. The results of these interviews show that if employees rotate between departments, so called “revolving work tasks,” or face challenges within their own work tasks, the individuals acting space is opened up. This results in feed-forward and feed-back phases, which in turn generate the learning situations where the employees can learn on a conceptual and intellectual level. In several stores, the formal organisation creates an objective space of action for the employees, but the study shows that an informal organisation can also create their own objective space of action. If this is going to happen, employees must acquire a subjective space of action in the form of knowledge or experience. In a store with a clear objective space of action, employees tend to help each other more within and over departments. The study also states that a good relation between coworkers facilitates job-rotation. The results of the study can be used as a basis for further study of the way job-rotation affects learning. The study lends itself well to be used by people now working at ICA-stores, in order to get a better understanding of the consequences that can be connected to the introduction of job-rotation.
