This research consists on working with mathematical functions through contributions made by the Mathematical Modeling practice, using a model which allows the educator to develop a search for interaction using mathematics contextualized in the students‟ reality. Thus, opposite to the more traditional teaching methods, this study indicates the possibility of understanding content related to affine functions, based on the results obtained in a group composed by four students from first year of high school in Brazil and, methodologically, using the mathematical modeling for this purpose. This research is divided in five chapters that seek to guide the educator to the initial importance of the functions content in the Brazilian education, the practical lessons targeted to students in a field research, which sought to bring the subject closer to the students‟ reality through a problem-situation involving students in a pizzeria near the school. Hence, reality and mathematics become inextricable tools for students to understand common situations, that incorporate the subject to a variety of experiences, ensuring teachers and students wide possibilities to develop together an understanding of this subject, with the necessary interaction to accomplish quality learning.

For this study the methodological referrals are shown and some steps to work with Modelling in the classroom are established. It also presents some examples of problems, construction and discussion of mathematical models, developed in the classroom for Elementary Education. Difficulties of intervention found by teachers to deal with the modeling are listed and also the processes of teacher’s training in relation to the Modelling are discussed, advocating that they must support themselves reflexively on the experiences with Modelling in the classroom context. This way some guidelines are proposed for an evaluation in Mathematical Modelling. Strategies for Teaching Mathematics to High School Students with Mild Disabilities

Kimberly J Kamler (10703001) 26 April 2021 (has links)
Many high school math teachers are not trained for teaching students with mild disabilities. Math curriculum is not typically developed with the needs of students with mild disabilities in mind. Teachers may not be aware of the unique barriers for students with mild disabilities, and strategies to help them master mathematics. The purpose of this study was to identify research-based techniques used by general education and special education teachers for teaching math to high school students with mild disabilities. The study also investigated teachers’ perceptions of and willingness to implement specific strategies to teach math skills to students with mild disabilities. Academic research articles were reviewed to identify strategies. A survey was taken by nine high school general education and five special education teachers who teach math. The results showed a reasonable degree of knowledge, experience, and positive perceptions of evidence-based strategies, especially co-teaching. There were significant differences between the responses of teachers with math teaching licenses compared to those with special education licenses. Based on the existing literature and the survey results, a handbook of resources was created for teachers of secondary math classes to support learning for students with mild disabilities.

Improving Student Interest, Mathematical Skills, and Future Successthrough Implementation of Novel Mathematics Bridge Course for High School Seniors and Post-secondary Students

Webb, Derek, Richgels, Glen, Wolf, Marty J., Frauenholtz, Todd, Hougen, Ann 11 May 2012 (has links)
We present a new course titled “Introduction to the Mathematical Sciences.” The course content is 1/3 algebra, 1/3 statistics, and 1/3 computer science and is taught in a laboratory environment on computers. The course pedagogy departs radically from traditional mathematics courses taught in the U.S. and makes extensive use of spreadsheet software to teach algebraic and statistical concepts. The course is currently offered in area high schools and two-year postsecondary institutions with financial support from a Blandin Foundation grant (referenced under BFG). We will present empirical evidence that indicates students in this course learn more algebra than students in a traditional semester-long algebra course. Additionally, we present empirical evidence that students learn statistical and computer science topics in addition to algebra. We will also present the model of developing this course which depended on increasing future student success in a variety of disciplines at the post-secondary level of study.

Implementing the National curriculum statement : how is instructional capacity in the teaching and learning of mathematics constructed, organised and replenished in secondary schools?

Chigonga, Benard 05 1900 (has links)
A study was undertaken to explore what constitutes instructional capacity in the teaching and learning of mathematics (TLM), with a focus on how schools (as institutions of teaching and learning) integrate resources for a particular configuration of capacity to promote high achievement levels of Grade 12 students in mathematics. Data were collected in ten public secondary schools, mostly in a disadvantaged context, in the Vhembe District in Limpopo Province, South Africa. The study explores strategies for constructing, organising and replenishing instructional capacity in TLM. Five low- and five high-performing schools were selected, based on the pass rate in mathematics in high stakes examinations. The researcher observed lessons and interviewed ten Grade 12 mathematics teachers, ten principals, five curriculum advisors and a sample of forty Grade 12 mathematics students. The research revealed that the capacity to encourage the new curriculum reform practices in TLM within different schools is often inadequate, and largely fails to compensate for organisational effects and arrangements that shape the capacity to create quality instruction in mathematics. However, high-performing schools were somewhat ahead of low-performing schools in terms of encouraging reform-oriented teaching and learning in mathematics. Recommendations include: Principals should initiate the development and implementation of a school-based clinical supervision programme through collaborative decision-making to promote a sense of ownership by all mathematics teachers. Such a supervision programme would enhance commitment and ensure that all efforts are unified towards improving the quality of TLM. There is a need for the DoE in Limpopo Province to coordinate teacher professional development workshops, where effective practising mathematics teachers model how they teach mathematics in the classroom, while other teachers observe. Context-based strategies to enhance student outcomes in mathematics should be devised, such as modelling good practice by effective teachers in terms of: lesson preparation; subject knowledge; pedagogic approach; assessment and monitoring of classroom practice, including direct observation of teaching by HoDs and principals. It is proposed that attention to these issues, amongst others, would limit the impact of an unpromising context on student achievement levels in mathematics in high stakes examinations in the Vhembe District and elsewhere. / Mathematics Education / D. The policy cycle approach, formulated by Stephen Ball and Richard Bowe, that presents the debate around to the analysis of educational policies and its contributions to the critical and contextualized analysis of them, was applied as a theoretical and analytical framework to examine this educational policy. This paper verified two contexts, namely: text production and practice. The documental analysis and qualitative analysis of RCNEI allow comprehending the context of text production. Teachers and coordinators were interviewed to enable the observation of context of practice. Analysis was supported by software ALCESTE. The research identified a text influenced by national and international policies, what it became confused and hard to interpret. The results of analysis indicated still that the education professional maintained their traditional of teaching, although they considered this document as a model unifying national guidelines for Early Childhood Education.
