AJUSTAMENTO E CONTROLES DE QUALIDADE DAS LINHAS POLIGONAIS / LEAST-SQUARES ADJUSTMENT METHOD AND QUALITY CONTROLS OF TRAVERSES

Stringhini, Mário 03 March 2005 (has links)
Brazil is a country of great dimension that still holds unexplored areas of little population nowadays. Actually these lands are state-owned, but they have been appropriated as a private property, especially in the Amazon basin. The need for a governmental more effective territorial management was formally implemented through the establishment of a geodetic referenced landed property register. This system will integrate the public administration organization and the land register services in a common basis of data. The geodetic science and the advanced technological resources like the Global Positioning System, which receives radio rays transmitted by satellites that surround the Earth and the electronic tachymeter, which capture light rays reflected on locations over the surface of the Earth, enable reliable geodetic references for the database graphic. Brazilian government takes into consideration the set of a wide basis of data in 10 years in order to control the undue appropriation of lands in the agricultural border, as well as great management over the territorial organization in the states of consolidated agrarian structure. The present work has been thought with the purpose of improving topographic survey quality by means of adjustment and quality survey estimation to serve geodetic referencing principles. This survey of a 9-points traverse being used one control point. It was implanted at Federal University of Santa Maria campus with electronic tachymeter and the obtained data worked in a digital calculation form. The qui-square test of the quadratic form of misclosures was put into practice to evaluate the survey as a whole. Then the adjustment by the least square method was done, utilizing the observation equations taken from the variation of coordinates. The weight unit variance a posteriori was calculated in the qui-square test in the quadratic form of the residuals, which evaluates adjustment quality. The variance-covariance matrix of the adjusted coordinates have enable the estimation for point of the trasverse by using the calculation of the geometric parameters of the standard error ellipse, error ellipse, mean squared position error or radial error and circular error probable. Also, data snooping test of Baarda was developed to identify the observations that could present measuring problems. All the procedures were organized in a diagram to make a computer programming easier. In that research, instrumental systematic errors were verified, but they did not impair the method presentation. The adjustment has shown convergence after little iterations, the qui-square tests were in the range of acceptance of the hypotheses; the data snooping test has shown the most reliable observations while the estimations for point were quantified and graphically presented. The author hopes the work contributes to offer an accessible alternative scientifically based to surveyors, under the new paradigm presented by Topography.

Optimering av blåsmaskinstyrning på Bromma reningsverk / Optimization of blower control at Bromma wastewater treatment plant

Wikén, Moa January 2017 (has links)
The aeration step is the most energy consuming process in the wastewater treatment plant, i.e. making the energy usage in this step more efficient is of great concern both in Sweden and world wide. There are some examples of previous studies investigating ways to make the ae- ration control more efficient, though most of these have focused on for example ammonium feedback control rather than blower control which is the main focus of this study. Bromma wastewater treatment plant installed three new blowers in december 2016 functioning as suppliers of air to the aeration step in the bioreactor. Since there are still three old blowers operating at the WWTP, there is a need to control two different types of blowers efficiently. This is challenging since the two blower types have different capacities, efficiency and maxi- mum/minimum air flows and a control strategy that optimizes the operation of these two blower types combined needs to take this into account. Operational data for the blowers was used to generate a second grade polynome for each blower type which gives the efficiency as a function of produced air flow. These polynomes were further utilized to build a script in MATLAB that chooses the most efficient number of blowers operating and at what air flows for a certain total aeration need. The least square method was used to calibrate a model for calculating energy consumption for the simulated control strate- gy. Calculations for energy consumption from the current control strategy and another strategy proposed by the blower deliverer Sulzer were made in order to decide whether the optimized control strategy was an improvement or not. The simulation results and the calculations for energy consumption indicates that the current control strategy at Bromma WWTP is almost as effective as the optimized control strategy. Both strategies sets the new blowers at the first places in the queue. The optimized strategy appears to be more efficient for flows that requires both new and old blowers operating. From the calculations of energy consumption, it was shown that the control strategy from Sulzer de- mands an energy consumption on levels in between the one for the current control strategy and the optimized control strategy. I båda fallen kopplas de nya maskinerna in i första hand.

Positioning in wireless networks:non-cooperative and cooperative algorithms

Destino, G. (Giuseppe) 06 November 2012 (has links)
Abstract In the last few years, location-awareness has emerged as a key technology for the future development of mobile, ad hoc and sensor networks. Thanks to location information, several network optimization strategies as well as services can be developed. However, the problem of determining accurate location, i.e. positioning, is still a challenge and robust algorithms are yet to be developed. In this thesis, we focus on the development of distance-based non-cooperative and cooperative algorithms, which is derived based on a non-parametric non- Bayesian framework, specifically with a Weighted Least Square (WLS) optimization. From a theoretic perspective, we study the WLS problem and establish the optimality through the relationship with a Maximum Likelihood (ML) estimator. We investigate the fundamental limits and derive the consistency conditions by creating a connection between Euclidean geometry and inference theory. Furthermore, we derive the closed-form expression of a distance-model based Cramér-Rao Lower Bound (CRLB), as well as the formulas, that characterize information coupling in the Fisher information matrix. Non-cooperative positioning is addressed as follows. We propose a novel framework, namely the Distance Contraction, to develop robust non-cooperative positioning techniques. We prove that distance contraction can mitigate the global minimum problem and structured distance contraction yields nearly optimal performance in severe channel conditions. Based on these results, we show how classic algorithms such as the Weighted Centroid (WC) and the Non-Linear Least Square (NLS) can be modified to cope with biased ranging. For cooperative positioning, we derive a novel, low complexity and nearly optimal global optimization algorithm, namely the Range-Global Distance Continuation method, to use in centralized and distributed positioning schemes. We propose an effective weighting strategy to cope with biased measurements, which consists of a dispersion weight that captures the effect of noise while maximizing the diversity of the information, and a geometric-based penalty weight, that penalizes the assumption of bias-free measurements. Finally, we show the results of a positioning test where we employ the proposed algorithms and utilize commercial Ultra-Wideband (UWB) devices.

Determination of net interest margin drivers for selected financial institutions in South Africa : a comparison with other capital markets

Mudzamiri, Kizito 01 May 2013 (has links)
M.Comm. (Financial Management) / There is a wide perception that bank net interest margins (NIMs) in Sub-Saharan Africa in general and South Africa in particular, are higher compared to other regions. The study investigates four commercial banks in South Africa with the aim of identifying the relevant factors affecting the behaviour of NIMs in commercial banking in South Africa, and draws comparisons with other markets. The study employs the Classical Linear Regression Model (CLRM) using the Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) data estimating technique to analyse net interest margins over the period 2000 to 2010. The study takes note of Ho and Saunders’s seminal work produced in 1981, and subsequent extensions and modification by other authors and researchers. Net interest margins are modeled in a single-step together with explanatory variables driven from the theoretical model. Using data obtained from the Bankscope data base, the variables examined in the study are; competitive structure of the market, average operating costs, management’s propensity for risk aversion, credit risk exposure, the quantum of the bank’s operations, short-term money market interest rate volatility, the opportunity cost of holding reserves and quality of management running the institution. The findings of the study suggest that market power, average operating costs, degree of risk aversion, credit risk exposure, and size of operations are major factors explaining the behaviour of NIMs in South Africa. These variables are major in terms of the number of banks that exhibit statistical significance. Market power, interest rate volatility and opportunity cost of holding reserves are also relevant factors, although they affect fewer banks than the major factors. Comparison of South African net interest margins determinants with those from other regions reveals some fundamental differences. These differences indicate that banks from different countries and regions are faced with different operating environments and risk profiles that drive net interest margins.

Factors influencing the choice to shop online : a psychological study in a South African context

De Swardt, Maray Annelise 25 November 2008 (has links)
As the Internet and online shopping is growing at a very fast pace worldwide, investigating this phenomenon within a South African context is crucial considering that it is a relatively new trend in this country. Typical of new trends and phenomena is the absence of research already conducted, resulting in a lack of existing literature. Very few studies have examined the factors and reasons that entice South Africans to utilise this modern shopping channel, and even less have used an in-depth, qualitative approach. To assist in filling this void, this research study examines people’s reasons for taking up or not taking up online shopping, from a South African perspective. A snowball sampling method was used to identify participants fitting the predetermined sample criteria and in-depth qualitative interviews were conducted with all participants. The theoretical approach used in the analysis was social constructionism. Findings are presented by means of constructions identified during the data analysis, and these indicated that saving time, the convenience of products being increasingly available and accessible and being able to make price comparisons easily are the main advantages of online shopping. Main disadvantages were not being able to touch and feel products, and the absence of a salesperson. Limitations of the research are discussed, along with recommendations for online retailers and future research. / Dissertation (MA)--University of Pretoria, 2008. / Psychology / unrestricted

Modeling a Phosphorus Credit Trading Program in the Lake Okeechobee Watershed

Corrales, Juliana 01 September 2015 (has links)
Lake Okeechobee is the largest lake in the southeastern United States and is a central component of the hydrology and environment of the Everglades ecosystem in South Florida. The natural state of the lake has been degraded as wetlands and natural habitats in the Lake Okeechobee watershed have been replaced with farms, urban areas, and dairy operations. Excessive phosphorus loadings from these diverse sources have been identified as the leading causes of the lake’s impairment. For more than four decades, many resources have been allocated to regional and local restoration efforts to reduce phosphorus loadings into the lake. However, phosphorus loadings have not decreased and the recovery of the lake could take more time, particularly with today’s limited local budgets. Market-based instruments, such as water quality trading programs, have emerged over the past decades to cost-effectively achieve water quality objectives in impaired watersheds. The main objective of this dissertation was to assess the environmental and economic benefits of implementing a phosphorus trading program in Lake Okeechobee watershed, compared to a conventional command-and-control approach. A comprehensive literature overview of nationally and internationally implemented trading programs was conducted to highlight advantages and challenges of these programs towards achieving water quality goals, and to outline the essential elements of a successful program. Furthermore, a modeling framework, integrating a hydrologic-water quality model with an economic model, was developed to assess the potential cost savings that trading might offer over a command-and-control approach. The modeling framework was applied in three priority basins of the Lake Okeechobee watershed. In each case, while developing trading scenarios to achieve phosphorus load reduction targets, the trading program was less expensive than the conventional command-and-control approach. This research provided the foundation for stakeholders to better understand whether water quality trading has the potential to work in the Lake Okeechobee watershed and to facilitate the development of a pilot program. In addition, it offered some insights on the potential economic opportunities that pollution sources would have by participating in the trading program. The modeling framework developed in this dissertation could facilitate the assessment of future water quality trading programs in other watersheds.

Abondance et origine trophique de la noctuelle de la tomate (Helicoverpa armigera) dans les paysages ruraux de production cotonnière au Nord Bénin / Abundance and trophic origin of the Cotton Bollworm (Helicoverpa armigera) in cotton producing farmland of North Benin

Tsafack-Menessong, Noëlline 10 July 2014 (has links)
The development of strategies independent of pesticides is a fundamental objective for sustainable crop protection against pests as well as for maintaining of a healthy environment for human populations. The rationale of the research presented here was to improve our ability to control the cotton bollworm, Helicoverpa armigera by non-pesticide methods via habitat conservation. We analyzed the influence of agricultural practices and landscape composition and diversity on the abundance and trophic origin of H. armigera and assessed gossypol and tomatine in individual H. armigera as cotton and tomato biomarkers respectively. Gossypol was shown to be a stable cotton biomarker, even in adult H. armigera 12 days after emergence. In contrast, tomatine was only detected in larvae of H. armigera and not adults; thereby tomatine can not be considered as a marker of tomato plants. Subsequently, in north Benin, the abundance of H. armigera larvae and adults was monitored in cotton fields. We found a strong effect of agricultural practices on H. armigera larvae abundance. Delay sowing date and increase frequency of weeding reduced the abundance of H. armigera in cotton fields; whereas the proportion of cotton and tomato in the landscape increased. This study also highlights the role of the previous landcover in the infestation of a cotton field: A previous tomato landcover increased infestation three times more than a previous maize landcover. At nested scales ranging from 100 m, 250 m to 500 m, we studied the effects of landscape composition and diversity firstly on the abundance of adult H. armigera and secondly on their trophic origin. We found that, landscape diversity was the main factor that influenced both the abundance adult and their trophic origin at 500 m scale. Analyses of stables isotopes of Carbone showed that proportion of hosts plants with C3 photosynthetic pathway in the landscape was positively related to H. armigera moths with C3 trophic origin signal at 500 m scale. Only 10% of moths were positive to gossypol signal. The proportion of cotton in the landscape seems not important to explain the trophic origin of individual which were positive to gossypol signal. Therefore, for integrated management of H. armigera our results suggest it is necessary to consider the following agricultural practices and crop diversity regimes (in regard to the resource use strategies of this polyphagous pest). A tomato previous landcover should be avoid; shift sowing date between cotton fields, and have at less three manual weedings. In additional, we suggest employing maize around cotton fields rather than other crops.

Multivariate non-invasive measurements of skin disorders

Nyström, Josefina January 2006 (has links)
The present thesis proposes new methods for obtaining objective and accurate diagnoses in modern healthcare. Non-invasive techniques have been used to examine or diagnose three different medical conditions, namely neuropathy among diabetics, radiotherapy induced erythema (skin redness) among breast cancer patients and diagnoses of cutaneous malignant melanoma. The techniques used were Near-InfraRed spectroscopy (NIR), Multi Frequency Bio Impedance Analysis of whole body (MFBIA-body), Laser Doppler Imaging (LDI) and Digital Colour Photography (DCP). The neuropathy for diabetics was studied in papers I and II. The first study was performed on diabetics and control subjects of both genders. A separation was seen between males and females and therefore the data had to be divided in order to obtain good models. NIR spectroscopy was shown to be a viable technique for measuring neuropathy once the division according to gender was made. The second study on diabetics, where MFBIA-body was added to the analysis, was performed on males exclusively. Principal component analysis showed that healthy reference subjects tend to separate from diabetics. Also, diabetics with severe neuropathy separate from persons less affected. The preliminary study presented in paper III was performed on breast cancer patients in order to investigate if NIR, LDI and DCP were able to detect radiotherapy induced erythema. The promising results in the preliminary study motivated a new and larger study. This study, presented in papers IV and V, intended to investigate the measurement techniques further but also to examine the effect that two different skin lotions, Essex and Aloe vera have on the development of erythema. The Wilcoxon signed rank sum test showed that DCP and NIR could detect erythema, which is developed during one week of radiation treatment. LDI was able to detect erythema developed during two weeks of treatment. None of the techniques could detect any differences between the two lotions regarding the development of erythema. The use of NIR to diagnose cutaneous malignant melanoma is presented as unpublished results in this thesis. This study gave promising but inconclusive results. NIR could be of interest for future development of instrumentation for diagnosis of skin cancer.

The Effects of Trade Liberalization Policies on Human Development in Selected Least Developed Countries

Ray, Elizabeth Thompson 12 1900 (has links)
This dissertation examines the effects of trade liberalization policies (represented by membership in the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade/World Trade Organization on selected Least Developed Countries' (LDCs) human development (represented by the Human Development Index). In this dissertation, General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) and World Trade Organization (WTO) policies are theorized to have two distinct types of effects: their direct effect and their indirect effect. Two questions are focused on: first, what is the effect (total, direct and indirect) of WTO policies on human development for selected LDCs? Second, what is the effect (total, direct and indirect) of WTO policies on human development for selected developing/developed countries (i.e. non-LDCs) holding economic development constant? Using the dependency theory of development as a theoretical basis, this dissertation examines the assumptions of modernization-theory-based policies as expressed in trade liberalization policies (i.e. the implementation of comparative advantage and now market fundamentalism) with world-system analysis techniques. To examine these questions, four panel regression models are constructed to measure the total, direct and indirect effects of WTO policies during the near-term (1998-2003) and during a longer historical term (1975-2000). The data for the analyses are taken from seven different sources of international data. The analyses seemingly demonstrate that there are quantifiable negative effects of GATT/WTO membership (trade liberalization policies) on human development in selected LDCs. The current implementation of trade liberalization policies does not benefit the well-being of all concerned as promoted by the WTO.

Curvas de crescimento e produtividade de vacas Nelore e cruzadas, de diferentes tipos biológicos, em sistema de produção intensiva / Curves of growth and productivity of Nellore and cross from different biological types in intensive production system

Fabiane de Lima Silva 11 February 2010 (has links)
Initially, were analyzed weight-age data from birth to 100 months of age from cows of four genetic groups (G): Nellore (NEL), ½Nellore + ½Canchim (CN), ½Angus +½Nellore (AN) and ½Simmental + ½Nellore (SN), of a experiment carried out at Embrapa Southeast Cattle Research Center, State of São Paulo, Brazil. The animals considered in this study were born from 1998 to 2001 (Year) in spring and fall (EP), and were managed in intensive production system and submitted to three of levels of supplementation post-weaning (M): 0, 1.5 and 3.0 kg/animal/day of concentrate. The objective of this study was to compare different nonlinear models to fitted growth curves, of beef cattle females, and to evaluate of environmental and genetic group effects on the estimated parameters. The nonlinear models: Brody, Gompertz, Logistic, Von Bertalanffy and Richards were fitted by ordinary least squares and weighted by the inverse of the variances of the weights in different periods. It was used the NLIN procedure of SAS. The parameters asymptotic weight (A) and maturing rate (k) obtained from model of Brody were analyzed by a mixed linear model that, besides the overall mean effect, included the effects of G, M, EP, and the interactions among these effects. The Brody and Von Bertalanffy models converged for all genetic groups, although slight superiority of the weighted Brody. Comparing the goodness of fit of these models, the use of the inverse of variances showed more efficient than the adjust of the models considering normal variances. Individual analysis of A and k estimated the model weighted Brody, the A parameter was influenced (P <0.05) by genetic group and season of birth and k was influenced (P <0 05) for levels of supplementation to the animals. Improvements in feeding supplementation resulted in less variation in the shape of growth curves and rates of maturity. In the second part of the work, it was evaluated the goodness of the Brody model, weighted by the inverse variance weights, in the adjust of weight-age data, and also analyzed the influence of the maturity weight (A) and maturing rate (k) estimates for traits cows productivity. Were organized 10 contemporary groups (CG) with concatenation of effects Year- EP-M for each G. Considering a mixed model with effects of G and CG (10 contemporaneous groups organized by concatenation Year-EP-M effects), linear and quadratic covariate effects of A and k, were added, alternately, for the analysis of the following traits: weaning weight of calve (WW), number (NW8) and kg (KW8) of calves weaned over 8 years of the cow in the herd; WW/weight of the cow at calving (WW_WC); WW/cow weight at weaning of calf (WW_WWC); and WW/metabolic unit of the cow (PV0,75) at weaning of the calf (MW). There was significant difference (P<0.05) of the growth curve among the genetic groups and also among contemporary groups within G. It was found that the production traits were, in general, influenced (P<0.01) by both linear and quadratic effects of A and k.
