Exploring if, and How a Practice Works in Authentic Settings

As Cook and Cook (2012) point out, evidence-based practices “represent practices that meet a high bar of empirical validation, but they do not trump practical wisdom and common sense when making instructional decisions” (p. 78). As educators, we are tasked with making decisions based on a body of evidence and a sound data-based decision-making process (Rowe, 2020). Teachers analyze assessment data across students to determine common themes that can be addressed using classwide versus individualized instruction. Teachers examine data from assessments (e.g., curriculum-based measures, formal assessments, informal interviews with students’ general education teachers, writing samples, and other assessment data) and find many students struggle with essential skills not addressed in the general curriculum. In the absence of published curricula to teach specific skills, teachers are left to construct their own lesson plans. Oftentimes, teachers pull from multiple sources (e.g., worksheets, teacher-made materials, materials found on the Internet). A source teachers might not often consider is the research literature itself. A single research article can be the source of one lesson or multiple lessons. A well-written research article provides all the information needed to develop core components of a lesson plan (i.e., lesson objective, setting and materials, content taught, teaching procedures, evaluation) [...]

Superman as a Literary Hero through the Years

The licensed character of DC Comics known as Superman has been a beloved pop-culture icon for nearly seven decades. This research examines the cultural and historical relevance of the character of Superman, as well as analyzes the character himself as he is portrayed in various comic books and graphic novels since 1938. Ten comic books featuring Superman as a central character have been examined from each decade starting from the l 930s through the 2000s for a total of 70 comics. The comics were read and analyzed to find possible changes in the character of Superman over time, as well as the roles of Lois Lane, alter-ego Clark Kent, members of Superman's family, emerging enemies, and other interesting aspects of Superman culture. The data collected showed that Superman remains relevant despite significant cultural and historical changes over the past seven decades. Further, much of his popularity lies in his ability to be retooled to meet the needs of the current culture while remaining true to his traditional values. Reviewed research also shows that Superman has educational value as a tool to be used by elementary school teachers.

Enhancing Imagination and Creativity in the Elementary Classroom Through 11 Impossible Children's Books and Related Lesson Plans

Not too long ago we believed that it was impossible to send men outside our planets gravitational force, let alone send them to the moon. As adults, we live in a world that believes in two possibilities, those goals that are possible as long as they believe in themselves and find new ways to accomplish each goal they are given. Slowly this thought process is leaving the students minds to make room for the latest information for best practices in formal test taking. There has been a huge decline in our imaginative and creative thinkers due to this overwhelming need as a nation to "raise our test scores." I agree that our students need to obtain as much information as possible, but I believe in the impossible. I believe that there is a way to incorporate imaginative and creative thinking into our classrooms today to allow for students to build this idea that their impossible ideas can become possible. I want to challenge our students to be those who believe that it is not so impossible to land on the moon, as long as they can use their imagination, and creativity to solve their problems. To do this, I have used this thesis as a basis for 6 lesson plans based on 11 impossible children’s book. This is to provide teachers with resources that match the standards they are already using and create lifelong imaginers and creative thinkers who can turn the most impossible idea into a reality.

This thesis project for a Master of Arts in Spanish Pedagogy consists of a four-week, ten-lesson unit on culture in the family. This unit is designed for a middle school Spanish I class and is intended to supplement Chapter 5 in the Realidades textbook in the cultural aspect of learning a foreign language. The intention is to engage students to consider cultural perspectives, or the “why” cultures do what they do. The lesson plans from the unit are based on backward design and are structured around essential questions including, “What constitutes an ideal family?” An emphasis is placed on cultural perspectives of individual families while incorporating the five C's of the World-Readiness Standards for Learning Languages. An analysis of student learning and outcomes are provided in the final chapter. Supplementary lesson plans and evidentiary student work, photos and videos are included as appendices.

Outdoor education may be quite a well-known conception but still unsettled in the Slovenian pedagogical context. The Scandinavian – Swedish conceptual tradition in the thesis provides a framework for analysing the Slovenian curriculum; the lesson plans for the compulsory school from an outdoor education perspective. The main characteristics of outdoor education, gathering around experience, place and method/activities, are found also in the Slovenian context, exactly in the formal education documents. The perspective of outdoor education would therefore lie in introducing the Swedish concept of outdoor education as an opportunity to reflect upon an existent outdoor teaching and learning practice and inherent teacher education. / Utomhuspedagogik må vara ett välkänt begrepp men är fortfarande okänt i den slovenska pedagogiska kontexten. Den skandinavisk-svenska traditionella uppfattningen i denna uppsats bildar ett ramverk för att analysera de slovenska kursplanerna och läroplanerna för den obligatoriska grundskolan, ur ett utomhuspedagogiskt perspektiv. Det som huvudsakligen karaktäriserar utomhuspedagogik, och som rör sig kring erfarenhet, plats och metod/aktiviteter, finns också i den slovenska kontexten, och mera exakt i de formella utbildningshandlingarna. Det utomhuspedagogiska perspektivet skulle därför kunna skapas genom att introducera den svenska uppfattningen om utomhuspedagogik som en möjlighet att reflektera kring en befintlig pedagogik och lärandepraktik samt kring lärarutbildningen.

This thesis deals with the possibilities of using ICT in English language teaching at primary school. The theoretical part deals with the definition of the concept of ICT, ways of implementing ICT in teaching, further describes the possible advantages and disadvantages of using ICT in teaching at primary school and mentions the didactic functions of ICT and general education and language objectives supported by technologies. The practical part of this thesis presents ten specific activities using ICT in English language lessons at primary school. These activities are always properly described in terms of educational objectives, ways of their realization and in the end are reflected. Each activity was tested in practice in advance. The research carried out in this thesis deals with the use of ICT among teachers at an elementary school in Pilsen and reflects their opinion on technologies and their future in English language teaching at primary school.

Tracz / This report contains lesson plans as well as a theoretical and historical analysis of the literature performed in the Graduate Conducting Recital of Veronica Kongs. The recital was held in the Satanta Junior/Senior High School Auditorium in Satanta, Kansas on Tuesday, May 8, 2007 at 7:00 p.m. The recital featured performances by the Junior High and High School Concert Bands. Literature for the Junior High Concert Band included Korean Folk Rhapsody arranged by James Curnow and Riders on the Southern Front by Roland Barrett. The Junior High/High School Concert Band literature consisted of For Thy Courts Above by Ed Huckeby and Of Dark Lords and Ancient Kings by Roland Barrett. This report utilizes two analytical methods, the Larry Blocher/Richard Miles Unit Study model used in the Teaching Music through Performance in Band Books and the Frank Tracz approach of macro-micro score analysis.

Towards a Better Use: The Utah Shakespearean Festival, Teaching Artists, and Outreach Programs

Teaching Artists are an important component of the Utah Shakespearean Festival's Education Department's outreach touring program that visits K-12 schools throughout Utah each year. However, the Education Department could be using Teaching Artists in different and better ways to help K-12 teachers infuse theatre into their curriculum. This work looks carefully at the outreach offered by the Utah Shakespearean Festival's Education Department and then compares it to the outreach work being done by the Oregon Shakespeare Festival and Shakespeare Santa Cruz. Based on the analysis of the three festivals, assessment benchmarks are identified to aid the Education Department in evaluating their use of Teaching Artists and suggestions are made to help them strengthen their outreach programs through the creation of a Teaching Artist training program that would allow more Teaching Artists to work in Utah K-12 schools. The work concludes with ideas for lesson and unit plans for Teaching Artists of various levels to use in the K-12 classroom that align with the State Common Core Standards for Language Arts that were adopted by Utah in August, 2010.
