Duty, Sophie January 2022 (has links)

Glossolalie, traduction et dissonance : l'écriture hors-la-loi d'Antonin Artaud

Bradette, Marie-Eve 08 1900 (has links)
In a number of his writings, Antonin Artaud formulated, repeatedly, the terms of what might be considered an anarchic poetry, a form of language that would allow the abolition of distance between words and things, which is what he ultimately hopes to achieve through his writings. However, Artaud was never able to achieve this sense of literary anarchy. Therefore, since the concept of anarchy put forth by Artaud cannot fully explain what is really at work in his writings, this thesis raises the following questions: What does Artaud’s poetry ultimately achieve? Is there a figure which can illustrate the writing modalities at work in the French poet’s various texts? The figure of the outlaw is relevant in this case because it opens up the realm of reflection and conceptualisation. With the figure of the outlaw as the main starting point, this thesis formulates the hypothesis that what is played out in Antonin Artaud’s textuality is an outlaw poetic – a subversion of the Law through the use of different literary devices. In other terms, the outlaw poetic produces dissonant effects within the Symbolic. In order to reinforce this hypothesis, I shall work on two different axes of reflection which were brought forth through the analysis of Artaud’s traductologic and glossolalic literary devices. Subversion will first be seen through the notions of space and territory, and it will then be studied in its relation to temporality.

Author of Alice s Adventures In Wonderland and its sequel Alice Through The Looking Glass, he eventually created a real and complex universe which uses what we call the logic of the nonsense as an element to motivate the development of mathematical thinking of the reader, taking it as well, learn by establishing a link between the concrete (mathematics) and the imaginary (their universe). In order to investigate and discuss the educational potential of their works and state some elements that can contribute to a decentralized math education from the traditional method of following the models and decorate formulas, we visited his works based on the studies of archeology of knowledge (FOUCAULT, 2007), the rational thought and symbolic thinking (VERGANI, 2003) and about the importance of stories and narratives to the development of human cognition (FARIAS, 2006). Through a descriptive, analytical study, we used the literary construction and presented part of our study in form of a mathematical novel, to give the mathematical school a particular charm, without depriving it of its basics properties as discipline and content. Our study showed how the works of Carroll have a strong didactic element that can deploy in various activities of study and teaching for mathematics classes / Ex?mio professor de matem?tica, Lewis Carroll, pseud?nimo de Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (1832 1898), fez da mistura da matem?tica com a literatura um ambiente l?dico para a aprendizagem dessa disciplina.

Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass And What Alice Found There , Lewis Carroll’s most famous books, have been widely intersemiotically translated throughout the last 150 years. A number of illustration, plays, ballets, songs, movies, TV shows and others was made by renowned and lesser known artists. There is not, however, a systematic approach of this phenomenon in a more strict field of analysis of intermediality and intersemiotic translations. Two notable examples will serve for analysis: a famous TV series by Jim Henson, The Muppet Show , aired from 1976 to 1981, featuring puppets and a human guest, in which an episode from the fifth season starred Brooke Shields playing Alice in 1980; and 1988 film with a blend of stop motion animation by multiple prize winner Czech director Jan Švankmajer, called Neco z Alenky . We intend to compare these translations of Alice’s novels, in which translators choose opposingly distinct characteristics of the books, but both of fundamental importance to the source.

[en] ALICE: AN IRREVERSIBLE CREATIVE DYNAMIC / [pt] ALICE: UMA DINÂMICA CRIATIVA IRREVERSÍVEL

LARISSA GUIMARAES AVERBUG 08 July 2021 (has links)
[en] Focusing on the creative process and transmedia, this research proposes investigating the irreversible creative dynamic driven by Lewis Carroll through his two acclaimed works: the Alices. From the Victorian era to contemporary art, Wonderland and Looking-Glass continue to be reinvented through the hands of artists who, inspired by the author s universe, mix reality and fiction by integrating biography into the artwork. The cultural phenomenon becomes transmedia, not in a strategic and centralized way, but organically and chaotically, through countless visual producers dispersed in time and space. Many of these producers are designers working in related areas and different media – such as illustration, photography, art, cinema and games –, who seem to develop a creative design attitude that allows them to collaborate with the expansion of the cultural phenomenon. The proposal includes identifying convergences and divergences not only between visual languages and media but also between the ideas and thoughts of the visual producers, during their artistic and poetic work in process. By mapping examples of the multiple visuality of Alice, the intention is to outline this dynamic s characteristics, which, through repetition and deviations, allows the narrative to be continuously reframed. It is believed that, as works that are open to the initiative of the reader and the artist, the nonsense story contributes as a catalyst element for new creative processes: in the Alice dynamic, there are new relationships of authorship and co-authorship, of production, reception and mediation. By echoing mainly different interdisciplinary voices, this research aims to present a theoretical, critical and philosophical approach to postmodernity issues present in Alice.

That Poor Little Thing: The Emotive Meanings of Diminutives in Polish and Russian Translations of Alice in Wonderland

Lockyer, Dorothy 29 April 2013 (has links)
The emotive connotations of diminutives in English are a source of controversy among scholars, while the Slavic languages of Polish and Russian are considered ‘diminutive-rich’ with diminutives that convey diverse nuances. Thus, the translation of diminutives between English and Slavic languages has either been portrayed as difficult or has been ignored altogether. However, an analysis of Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland and several of its translations into Polish and Russian shows that English has many diminutives, some of which are ‘untranslatable’, while many diminutives can be easily translated. Yet, the strong emphasis on diminutives in Polish and Russian produces diminutives in the translations that do not appear in the original text and are not typical of English. What becomes evident is that the obstacles in translating various diminutive constructions provoke the question: What are the semantic-pragmatic differences between English and Polish/Russian diminutives and how do these differences affect translation? / Graduate / 0679 / 0593 / 0314 / dlockyer@alumni.ubc.ca

No. of bitstreams: 1 Elisa de Freitas Weimann Gergull.pdf: 23284441 bytes, checksum: e7e3d90f068cc641e7668b7f15ccabf9 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2015-11-27 / Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico / This research has as objective the multiple and varied ensemble constituted by the illustrations of Lewis Carroll s Alice in Wonderland and has as main objective the analysis of the relationship between verbal text and visual text that are established in them, trying to define what is illustration, which elements the illustrator uses in his works and what meaning effects it causes. We work with the hypothesis that the illustrator is a translator that operates in hisher own language. The research corpus consists of an ensemble of 10 editions of Alice in Wonderland, including the illustrations made by Lewis Carroll himself and by John Tenniel, who was the first and the most famous Alice illustrator after the author. The selection criterion privileges the classic English editions and the best translations to Portuguese of the integral text of Alice. The illustrations of the corpus have different styles and are a sample of different executions of the story and its characters. The methodology consists in bibliographical and documental research, the last one being the search of the referred Alice editions. The theoretical referential use the main authors to deal with intersemioticity, noticeably Roman Jakobson, Julio Plaza, Octavio Paz and Haroldo de Campos; specialists in English literature and Lewis Carroll, like Martin Gardner, Donald Rackin, Jenny Woolf and Morton N. Cohen, specialists in illustrations like Sophie Van der Linden, Martin Salisbury, Morag Styles, Maria Nikolajeva, Carole Scott e Ana Margarida Ramos. The relevance of this research to the area of Communication and Semiotics is in the study of the syncretism between verbal and visual texts, that here is being used to analyze a fundamental work / Esta pesquisa tem como objeto de estudo o conjunto múltiplo e variado constituído pelas ilustrações de Alice no país das maravilhas de Lewis Carroll e como objetivo principal a análise das relações entre o texto verbal e o texto imagético que aí se estabelecem.

I've had such a curious dream!" : The dreaming in Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland and Tim Burton's film adaption

Zeijlon, Izabelle January 2019 (has links)
