Mötesplatsens mening och mål : Kund- och marknadstänkande inom folkbibliotekets förvaltning

Problemformulering och syfte: Bibliotekets styrning präglas av spänningar mellan ett demokratiskt uppdrag och en ekonomisk förvaltning. Syftet med uppsatsen är att studera motsättningen av folkbibliotekets styrning utifrån denna ideologiska spänning. Metod och teori: Genom kritisk ideologianalys analyseras tre kommuners biblioteksförvaltning; Nacka, Botkyrka och Stockholm, för att därefter belysas utifrån Chantal Mouffes politiska agonism och Jürgen Habermas borgerliga offentlighet.  Material och resultat: Genom studier av kommunernas biblioteksplaner samt dokument för bemötandepolicy framkom det att Nacka kommun främst betonade en ekonomisk förvaltning, medan Botkyrka kommun främst betonade det demokratiska uppdraget och Stockholms stad placerade sig mellan dessa ytterligheter. Kommunernas ideologiska profilering kan betraktas utifrån politisk agonism och borgerlig offentlighet. Slutsatser: Kommunernas ideologiska styrning av biblioteken skiljde sig åt i termer av demokratiskt ansvar, ekonomisk förvaltning samt användarinteraktionen. Samtliga kommuner upprätthåller den liberala konsensusmodellen i olika hög grad vilket sammanfaller med deras koppling till NPM. Fler studier behövs för att utröna kommunala styrdokuments inverkan på biblioteksverksamheten. / Purpose: Library management is influenced by the opposition between democratic values and economic efficency. The purpose of this paper is to examine how the public library is influenced ideologically by this rift. Methodology and theory: Three municipalities, Nacka, Botkyrka and Stockholm are analyzed through critical ideological analysis, and then compared to Chantal Mouffe’s political agonism and Jürgen Habermas bourgeois public sphere. Materials and findings: Through library plans and treatment policys the outcome is that Nacka prioritizes financial stability, Botkyrka democratic values and Stockholm is situated somwhere inbetween. The municipalities ideologies can also be illuminated by theories of political agonism and public sphere by their perception of the public conversation. Implications: The municipal library administrations were separated through their ideological understanding of democratic values, user treatment, and financial management. The municipalities maintained the liberal consensus model to varying degrees, which coincides with their connection to NPM. More research is however needed for understanding the local government and its impact on the public library.

The dissertation focuses on library automation. It examines relationships between the field of library automation and library management systems and the needs of libraries in relation to the process of library software selection. The main goal of the dissertation has been to create a library automation domain ontology and to develop tools to support a decision-making process of library software selection. The domain ontology has been created; it describes the field of library automation in relation to library systems, which are set in the broader context of the field of library automation and are regarded in terms of needs of libraries in connection to library software change. To obtain terms for ontology entity names both quantitative and mixed research methods were used, namely the analysis of scholarly texts on library automation and library systems; text analyses were performed using Voyant Tools software. Object properties and relationships among entities in ontology are based on the results of a qualitative survey of the needs of libraries in relation to the library management software. Based on the domain ontology, flowcharts have been created that illustrate the library's decision-making process when selecting a library management system. Leadership roles in academic information service enterprises: the attitudes of library staff towards a re-engineered leadership driven enterprise

The academic information service enterprise should continuously react to the rapidly changing environment in which it functions. The theoretical research pertaining to the study has shown that such enterprises which embark on re-engineering because radical change is required, should be knowledgeable in terms of what the change entails, why it is important to change and how the change takes place through re-engineering, organisational design and an innovative leadership framework. In order to ensure efficiency within its operations while focusing on its own sustainability, the enterprise should establish leadership roles which involve all staff in leadership on a daily basis. The empirical research focused on the attitudes of staff towards such a leadership driven enterprise. Results revealed that factors such as whether staff participated in re-engineering, their engagement with re-engineering proposals, their work experience and their language have a significant impact on the attitudes of staff towards an innovative leadership framework. / Information Science / M. The status of school libraries in Kenya : the case of public secondary schools in Nairobi County

For school libraries to sufficiently contribute to better information skills’ development and creation of a culture of lifelong learning among students, they require backing through well articulated policies both at national and individual school level. This study investigated the prevailing status of school libraries in public secondary schools in Nairobi County, Kenya. Using a survey research design, with a response rate of 68% for school principals and 66% for school librarians, this study established that although the majority of the schools had school libraries, these were individual schools’ efforts. There were no government policies on school libraries and most of the schools lacked explicit library policies. Additionally, they had not embraced contemporary trends in technology and the major impediment was lack of financial support. The study concluded that school libraries in Nairobi County were inadequately resourced and supported and recommended that the government of Kenya should come up with national policies that will entrench school libraries in the education system. / Information Science / MA (Information Science)

Die Mainzer Karmelitenbibliothek

Gegenstand der Untersuchung ist die Rekonstruktion und Analyse der Mainzer Karmelitenbibliothek von ihren frühesten archivalischen Zeugnissen in den 30er-Jahren des 15. Jahrhunderts bis zur Aufhebung des Klosters im Jahr 1802. Das Fehlen historischer Kataloge und eine lückenhafte archivalische Überlieferung zur Klostergeschichte bestimmten die Methodik der Analyse, deren Basis die Exemplare des Rekonstruktionsbestandes darstellten.(Hauptbestand in Mainz, Streubestände in Deutschland, Frankreich und den USA). Per autoptischer Ersterhebung konnten bislang 1589 Bände aus Mainzer Karmelitenprovenienz ermittelt werden, darunter 39 Handschriften und 289 Inkunabeln und Frühdrucke bis 1520. Die Arbeit steht im Forschungszusammenhang der Rekonstruktion klösterlicher Büchersammlungen, deren Ziel die De-Fragmentierung zerstreuter historischer Ensembles und die Bergung verschütteter Wissensräume geistlicher Gemeinschaften über ihre Bibliotheken ist. Sie macht sich Erkenntnisse, Methoden und Ergebnisse exemplarspezifischer Forschung zu eigen und leistet einen Beitrag zur anthropologischen Bibliotheksgeschichtsschreibung. Der Untersuchung lag das erkenntnisleitende Interesse zugrunde, die Sammlungsphysiognomie der Karmelitenbibliothek als Quelle für interdisziplinäre Forschungen wieder zugänglich zu machen. Im Dreischritt von Spurensuche, Spurensicherung und Spurendeutung wurde der Rekonstruktionsbestand auf Titel- und auf Exemplarebene analysiert und nach Verdichtung und Reflex des spirituellen und intellektuellen Profils in der Karmelitenbibliothek gefragt und geprüft, inwieweit sich klösterliche Wissensräume und Vernetzungen über Buchbesitz und Buchgebrauch in der erhaltenen Bibliothek abbildeten. Dabei standen die besonderen Wachstumsparameter einer mendikantischen Gebrauchsbibliothek, ihre Bestandszusammensetzung und die Strukturen der Bibliotheksverwaltung im Zentrum der Analyse. / The subject of this study is the reconstruction and analysis of the Mainz Carmelite library from the beginning of the 15th century (documentation of the earliest archival material) until the closure of the convent as a result of the secularisation in 1802. Lacking a catalogue and considering the existence of only few documents, the research project is mainly based on the surving copies once belonged to the convent: until today are registered 1589 copies with the provenance „Mainz Carmelites“, including 39 manuscripts and 289 incunables and early printed books until 1520. The study intends to be a contribution for the reconstruction of monastic libraries with the aim to unify surviving fragmentary collections. The known copies of the former Carmelite library have been looked into for their bibliographic and copy-specific records in order to get an idea of the intellectual and spiritual knowledge. Provenance research based on both personal as well as institutional ownership was done, including also information on circulation, acquisition and handling of the material in and outside monastic life.

An investigation and evaluation of three integrated library systems for the Human Sciences Research Council Information Services

Thesis (MPhil (Information Science))--University of Stellenbosch, 2006. / The Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) is South Africa’s statutory research agency dedicated to the social sciences. Information Services (IS) plays a significant role in advancing social science research through the provision of its proactive desk research and its library service. HSRC IS is looking at implementing a library solution that will better serve its users. The existing library system no longer meets the needs of the HSRC Library staff or the research staff. The functionality and efficiency of an ILS is critical to the smooth operation of IS in fulfilling its mandate within the HSRC, i.e. to provide access to information, in an efficient, useful, and timely manner, the focus being on ease of accessibility to a whole range of library and other online resources. The ILS must be able to handle many formats, accommodate searching on the Internet, provide a variety of functions including manipulating electronic data, working with graphics and expediting resource sharing. IS identified the following three ILS solutions, together with their add-on components 1) Innovative Interfaces’ Millennium solution, 2) SIRSI’s Unicorn solution and 3) Ex Libris’s ALEPH solution. The user and system requirements for ILS at the HSRC are sketched. The unique requirements, as well as the requirements the HSRC shares with other research organisations, are pointed out. The three ILS are evaluated against the criteria established. All three the ILS suppliers specialise exclusively in library automation software and have many years of experience in the provision and support of ILS, Innovative Interfaces Inc and Ex Libris for 25 years each and SIRSI for 15 years. Innovative Interfaces Inc has the largest customer base in South Africa. Ex Libris has one academic consortium as a client (CALICO) and some smaller utilisers, while SIRSI is just breaking into the South African market. All three systems comply fully with all the Cataloguing, Serials and Acquisitions modules requirements, that is, the more traditional library functionalities. When it comes to the more ‘non-traditional’ functionalities, such as full-text searching and discussion forum functionality, these systems still fall short. It is either not supported at all, or additional modules or add-ons are required. The various systems requirements are aligned to the current information technology environment at the HSRC. The conclusion is that the actual differences between the systems are few and far between, but that there are some specific requirements and add-on possibilities which makes Millennium the most attractive choice.

Managing information and communication technologies (ICTs) at academic libraries in selected public universities in Ghana

This study investigated the management of information and communication technologies (ICTs) at academic libraries in selected public universities in Ghana. The purpose for this study was to investigate the managerial processes and challenges in terms of conceptualization, policies, planning, implementation and strategies involved in ICTs adoption in order to formulate strategies for their management in Ghanaian academic libraries. Specifically, the objectives of the study were to review and explore the status and level of ICT diffusion in Ghanaian university; audit the procedures, processes and factors that influence ICT adoption and implementation in Ghanaian university libraries; establish the institutional policies, strategies and human resource that is in place and available for the adoption; determine the factors that hinder the adoption and management of ICTs in Ghanaian university libraries; and design a framework for effective and efficient management of ICTs in Ghanaian public university libraries. The study adopted mixed-method research design approach combining both quantitative and qualitative approaches through the pragmatic worldview to achieve the main purpose of the study. Adopting a survey study design, data was collected from five selected Ghanaian public universities by interviewing the five university librarians/directors, using questionnaires on 313 library staff and making observations within the five libraries. The findings of the study established that the managerial tools/instruments required for effective ICTs management in Ghanaian university libraries include the availability of library ICT policies, a library ICT strategic plan, library ICT installation and maintenance manuals, library ICT integration plans, and standard operations manuals. In addition, adequate funds, skilled manpower, adequate and standard ICT infrastructures among others. However, the study also revealed that there are absence of library ICT policies, lack of processes and procedure guidelines, inadequate funds, lack of management support, inadequate ICT skills among libraries and staff ICT training policies in the academic libraries in Ghana. The study recommends the formulation of ICT policies and strategic plans purposely for the comprehensive management of library ICT systems. Furthermore, the university top management should support their libraries by providing the required resources and motivation for the library managers including the development of stakeholder partnership and collaboration. To galvanise these recommendations, the study proposes a framework for the ICTs adoption and management in Ghanaian university libraries. / Information Science / D. Litt. et Phil. Migrating from integrated library systems to library services platforms : An exploratory qualitative study for the implications on academic libraries’ workflows

The present master thesis is an exploratory qualitative study in academic libraries regarding the transition from the integrated library systems to the next generation integrated library systems or library services platforms and the potential implications in their internal workflows. Nowadays, libraries all over the world are facing up with a number of challenges in terms of acquiring, describing and making available to the public all the resources, both printed and electronic, they manage. In particular, the academic libraries have more reasons to wish to fulfill their users’ needs since the majority of them use the library sources more and more for scientific research and educational purposes.In this study we attempt to explore the phenomenon in the globe using the available literature and to identify the implications in libraries’ workflows and the possible future developments. Moreover, through observation and semi-structured interviews we try to identify the current developments in the Greek context regarding the adoption of next ILS and possible implications in their workflows. Finally, we attempt a comparison between the Greek situation and the international one.
