Discurso e cotidiano: histórias de vida em depoimentos de pantaneiros / Discurse and day by day: the life history discursively built by the \"pantaneiro\" man

Maria Leda Pinto 15 February 2007 (has links)
This research´s aim is to look for in the pantaneiros (People who live in the Pantanal region) life history, the image that was discursively built of the panateiro man. It is through the use of language plus other aspects from the social context where they live and work that the man forms a subject that keeps social contacts with other subjects and other cultures, building this way , the history. The pantaneiro, living from the work in the south-mato-grossense Pantanal, which region has its own geographic and social historic features, composes, historic and socially, through the linguistic wealth that becomes true while living with other Portuguese speakers and with the Spanish and Guarani ones, languages presented in the discursive interaction day by day, which are resulted from the feast in open boundaries with Paraguay and Bolivia. From this perspective, the question that is presented is: in which level the pantaneiro image is built through its own speech? Or more specific, in which level it is possible to evidence the pantaneiro images built by its own oral speech? Considering these issues the challenge is to study the pantaneiro man speech, by the speech analyses, interdiscursive which remits to notions as discourse heterogeneity, subject and the production conditions discourse, these theoretic aspects are considered from three axles that are related to the subject and its actions: actions axles that are realized with the language, actions axles that are realized about and actions axles of language. Chapter 1 of this research shows a Pantanal contextualization in its geographic, historical and social aspects. Chapter 2 brings a brief historic of DA and the subject in its course. Chapter 3 talks about the DA in its comtemporary phase, showing the discourse issue of the interdiscourse, the subject and is production conditions discourse. Chapter 4 shows a brief retaking of the oral part, of the discourse genres and life histories genres and deposition that composes this research´s tittle. Chapter 5 shows the analyses of four life histories from the pantaneiros selected for this work.

ABRINDO O LIVRO DAS SUAS VIDAS: TRAJETÓRIAS DE FORMAÇÃO DE QUATRO PROFESSORAS NEGRAS / OPENING THE BOOK OF ITS LIVES: TRAJECTORIES OF FORMATION OF FOUR BLACK TEACHERS

Santos, Fernanda Gabriela Soares dos 28 June 2010 (has links)
The research called Opening the book of its lives: formation trajectories of four black teachers were developed and presented to the Program of Post-Graduation in Education, Master of the Center of Education of the Federal University of Santa Maria (UFSM), in the line Formation, to know and Professional Development, having as objective to investigate the personal and professional trajectory of four pertaining black teachers of different generations, as well as its imaginary and possible significances of being a black teacher at distinct moments of the History of Brazil. To this, had been invited four teachers who had studied at different moments and that also had marked my personal and professional history, even so two of them have almost the same age possess a trajectory of very different life. This thematic one was being constructed from my performance as professor of the basic education, my studies on blackness, sort and education, of my participation in a group of research and, over all, from my proper history of life. I found in the autobiographical narrative a promising way to develop this work, since what one searched was an approach of its imaginary ones and its possible fights against the instituted whiteness. The register was carried through by the writing of the half-structuralized interviews and its posterior transcription. Used as benchmarks Bosi (2004), Perrot (1997), Gomes (2009) and Castoriadis (1982). I perceived, in its narratives, many approaches: the fight with the socioeconomic question, the choice for the Teaching, the strong presence of the figure maternal in its lives. Also some divergences had been found, in function even though of the secular line that separates them. Reconstruct the history of black women means looking at the history of gender/ethnicity of those who always stayed on the sidelines of historical processes. I point out that the work, beyond having produced a formation in the collaborators, as told for them, also me auto formation resulted in formation. For all of us its research produced another look on the Teaching, on the questions of blackness, sort and the teachers who we were at the beginning are not the same ones that were formed themselves/self formed. Important to note that their individual stories are also part of the collective history, each respondent brought brands that are part of their individual careers and, concomitantly are similar to the larger issues. The struggle for survival, the question of religion, the imagery of daily life were some categories that appeared on all the voices and the other showing that the singular mark of the generation they belong to, the year they were born, the era in which they lived also Social enrolling in the individual, the memory of the railroad to the oldest contributor, and the issue of racial quotas for the youngest contributor.

A triangulation of relationships: Godfrey Wilson, Zacharia Mawere and their Bemba informants in Broken Hill, Northern Rhodesia, 1938–1941

Mbewe, Mary January 2015 (has links)
Magister Artium - MA / The rich corpus of postcolonial scholarly engagement on indigenous intermediaries, interpreters, clerks and assistants has a made a strong argument for the active participation of African agents in social scientific knowledge production on Africa. This literature has highlighted the complex and negotiated nature of fieldwork in African anthropology. While this literature has begun to deepen our understanding of the knowledge work of anthropologists and their research assistants, it has not adequately explored the relationship between anthropologists and informants in what one scholar has recently called ‘a triangulation of relationships’ between the anthropologist, the assistant and the informant. This research project proposes to explore these relationships in a detailed case study: that of the British anthropologist Godfrey Wilson (1908–1944), his interpreter Zachariah Mawere, and three primary informants, during three years of pioneering research into the effects of migrant labour at Broken Hill, Northern Rhodesia (Zambia) between 1938 and 1941. Using a close textual reading and detailed analysis of Wilsons Bemba and English fieldnotes held in the Godfrey and Monica Wilson collection at the University of Cape Town’s African Studies Library, the study will apply a micro-historical and biographical approach. It will seek to reconstruct the biographies and anthropological contributions of one interpreter and three central Bemba informants in order to explore the micro-politics of knowledge production in African anthropology.

SELECTIVE PREDATION DIFFERENTIALLY MODULATES ECOLOGICAL AND EVOLUTIONARY DISEASE DYNAMICS

Stephanie O Gutierrez (14216189) 06 December 2022 (has links)

Predators and parasites are critical, interconnected members of the community and have the potential to influence host populations. Predators, in particular, can have direct and indirect impacts on disease dynamics. By removing hosts and their parasites, predators alter both host and parasite populations and ultimately shape disease transmission. Our ability to accurately predict disease dynamics requires understanding the ecological effects of predation on prey and host densities and its role in the coevolution of host resistance and parasite virulence. While the impact of predators on disease dynamics has received considerable attention, research has focused on selective predation on infected prey. There is, however, substantial evidence that some predators avoid infected prey, preferentially attacking uninfected individuals. Such different strategies of prey selectivity by predators modulate host-parasite interactions, changing the fitness payoffs both for hosts and their parasites. I use empirical results and theoretical predictions as a framework to discuss the mechanisms by which predation for infected versus uninfected individuals can affect disease dynamics. First, by integrating hypotheses from behavioral ecology and disease ecology, I outlined novel perspectives that complement the prevailing view of selective predation of infected individuals (Chapter 1). Then, exploring short-term ecological outcomes and long-term host-parasite coevolution, I investigated patterns of Daphnia dentifera host population densities and host susceptibility over several generations under different types of predation pressure, including selective predation on infected and uninfected individuals (Chapter 2). Finally, building on the results of this research, I developed a high school project-based lesson plan that facilitates the instruction of the nature of science, implementing on-going ecological research in activities to improve student learning based on a constructivist approach to learning (Chapter 3). Together this research highlights the differential ecological and evolutionary outcomes of host-parasite interactions under varying community contexts.

The settlement has 209 land lots and the research was performed with 35 families. For data collection was used a questionnaire containing 50 questions about the socioeconomic and environmental profile of the settled families and, also, the collection of oral statements about the settlers' life history. The data analysis was made in a qualitative and quantitative way: the open questions were analyzed using the discursive textual analysis and the closed questions through simple statistics. The results pointed that the settlement profile in relation to age 37% are between 40-50 years, being 60% from male gender, the source of income of 54% of the families comes from their own property, the family income of 51% of the settlers is two minimum wages monthly, 68% has only uncompleted primary education, the home conditions indicated that 94% of the settlers have masonry dwellings and 89% of them are unfinished, 71% of the settlers claim to consume industrialized food frequently, the settlement production is characterized by dairy farming in most lots, followed by horticulture, the commercialization is done through cooperatives and associations, as well as sales in the city fairs. Was also researched, the environmental questions like the forest reserve area, water supply in 94% of the lots comes from wells, sanitary sewage 71% of the lots have septic tank, 74% of them use pesticide, was also researched about the solid waste management. The life histories highlighted the difficulties faced by the settlers to conquer the land, since the camp to the establishment on the lot. Denoted on the statements dreams, joys, settlers faith, it also disclosed the difficulties and problems of the Estrela da Ilha settlement. We conclude that in the community studied the biggest problems are related to socioeconomic issues, like income and education, and the worst environmental problems are the indiscriminate use of pesticides, the improper disposal of solid waste and the sanitary sewage. Therefore, these weaknesses need to be worked through public policies of access to education in rural areas, infrastructure, production and commercialization strategies and technical assistance for achieving sustainable rural development, emphasizing the quality of harmoniously living with the environment and social justice.

The cultural identities in post-conflict countries where a constant layer of a process among all ethnic groups within the country to reaffirm its position in the formation of the nation. Generational differences in South African women’s leadership approach : a life history investigation

Cammarata, Samantha 18 July 2013 (has links)
Recent literature shows an increased interest in generational differences among the workforce, particularly in Western societies. This has coincided with a focus on the role of women as successful leaders in the workplace. Despite this, the exploration and understanding of generational differences amongst female leaders in organisations has received limited attention, particularly in the South African context. The main purpose of the study was therefore to explore whether generational differences among women have an influence on how they approach leadership roles in a South African context. The study also sought to examine whether there are differences in gender identity across the generations as a result of socialisation. The study adopted a qualitative, life histories methodological approach to address the research purposes. Semi structured interviews were conducted with nine South African women in leadership positions from both the Baby Boomer and Generation X generational cohorts. The two generational cohorts were selected as they make up the majority of the current workforce while also being more likely, due to their age, of occupying leadership positions. The interviews were recorded and transcribed, and were imported into Atlas.ti for data analysis. The findings indicated that mothers played a dominant role in the socialisation of women, while fathers were significantly less present in the women’s stories. In terms of the effect of socialisation on career and leadership expectations, Baby Boomers were taught that they should be ‘stay-at-home-mothers’ and after having raised their children could then begin their careers. Generation X believed that they could be career women just as easily as ‘stay-at-home-mothers’. Despite both generations favouring a transformational approach to leadership, each generation differed in the way it practiced leadership. Baby Boomers led in a shared, structured and empowering manner, whereas Generation Xs focused on being attentive, unlocking potential, identifying talents of followers, and assisting in the growth and development of followers within their leadership approach. / Dissertation (MCom)--University of Pretoria, 2013. / Human Resource Management / unrestricted

Rotas alternativas: histórias de professoras que não puderam cursar os Programas Especias de Formação Pedagógica Superior em São Paulo / Alternative routes: histories of teachers who could not attend the Special Programs of Higher Education in Pedagogy in São Paulo.

Sene, Daniela Gilvana Alfredo 14 October 2010 (has links)
The present research proposes to investigate the alternative routes of higher education taken by teachers of early childhood education classes and first two years of fundamental education classes OFAs, non-tenured commissioned teachers, and Early Childhood Development Assistants who could not attend the Special Programs sponsored by the Secretariats for Education. To such end, a bibliographical survey was carried out on the theme of teacher education in the period following the establishment of the National Education Guidelines and Bases Act (LDBEN 1996), focusing on the main discourses disseminated throughout the field. The methodological procedures adopted included a review of statistical data and official publications, and interviews with six teachers and three representatives of union boards of directors. The analysis of the data was mainly inspired by Bourdieu\'s concepts of field and habitus, Bourdieu (1983, 2004), by Certeau\'s ideas of consumption and tactics, Certeau (2007), and by the studies on teacher professionalism by Nóvoa (1991, 1997, 1999a, 1999b). The analysis of the interviews also drew upon works that discuss gender issues, especially those by Carvalho (1999) and Hirata (1986), as well as the concepts of established groups and outsiders, Elias and Scotson (2000). The point of departure here was the assumption that teachers looked for higher education training not only in order to obtain certification or to comply with legislation, but to legitimize their knowledges and practices as teachers, and to gain professional recognition. A further hypothesis here was that the Special Programs possibly heated up the market and the consumption of teacher higher education in the largest city of the country in the wake of the LDBEN (1996). By the end of the study we observed that teachers had developed consumption tactics when choosing courses and institutions of higher education. After enrolling, they applied survival tactics to this particular level of teaching. In the perspective of the interviewees, the consumption and survival tactics developed increased their chances of achieving professional, functional, and economic stability, apart from producing a legitimized teacher professional status. The biographical approach revealed the complexity of being a teacher, and of obtaining higher education training in the city of São Paulo.

Pathogens in free-ranging African carnivores

Goller, Katja Verena 05 October 2011 (has links)
1 / The ecological role of most wildlife pathogens is poorly understood because pathogens are rarely studied in relation to the long-term population dynamics of wildlife hosts. Instead, pathogen infections are reported on a case basis or studies are focused on periods when pathogens cause noticeable mortality in their hosts. However, pathogens that appear to be of low virulence may also have an important effect if they operate in a synergistic fashion or affect life history parameters such as longevity or reproductive success. Furthermore, the effect of pathogens on population dynamics may be difficult to detect in wildlife, for example if they reduce the survival of young age classes that are rarely observed. Until now, research on the life history consequences of pathogen infection has mainly been confined to laboratory studies where animals are raised and kept under strictly defined conditions, or to small, short lived species such as rodents, birds or insects, as well as to human populations. The aim of this thesis was to address these problems by assessing the impact of single infections and co-infections by pathogens on key life history parameters and the influence of life history traits on infection status in a free-ranging social carnivore species, the spotted hyena Crocuta crocuta. The study was embedded in a long-term study on several clans of spotted hyenas from two subpopulations inhabiting the Serengeti National Park and the adjacent Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania, East Africa. Data on key life history parameters were available for several hundred individually known animals as was information on changing levels of prey availability. I established molecular biological methods (polymerase chain reactions (PCRs) and reverse transcription PCRs) to screen an extensive set of faecal, blood and tissue samples from individually known spotted hyenas and sympatric carnivores for the presence of coronavirus, calicivirus, canine distemper virus, canine parvovirus and the tick-borne blood parasite Hepatozoon sp. to determine the prevalence of the pathogens. 1

Currently, migratory processes have been more frequent, significant and large due to economic, political and social contexts as well as to the improvements in transportation. Because of its great social significance, this subject has become an object of study of various fields such as Anthropology, Economics, Sociology, Demography, Law, Religion Sciences, Pedagogy and Psychology. Immigration has increased in the last decades in Brazil which is mainly composed of Latin American immigrants. This study falls in the Psychology field, specifically in Critical Social Psychology as it intended to develop the understanding of the experiences lived by different Latin American immigrants in Campinas Metropolitan Region. Therefore, a qualitative research was performed using the life history approach since it allows the longitudinal study and exploration of the life experiences of the volunteers through the investigation process itself. The volunteers were composed of three fully adult Latin Americans who live in Campinas Metropolitan Region. The data obtained through the interviews was subjected to a hermeneutical-dialectial analysis, revealing that the reasons for immigration and permanency in the host country are commom, however complex. The experiences lived by the volunteers are influenced by different aspects namely gender, schooling level, social class and ethnic. However, some aspects were found to be similar in terms of what they expect from the everyday life, such as having a better quality of life in Brazil than in the birth country, adaptation to the new cultural and social context, discrimination experiences due to nationality, the rescue and preservation of the culture of origin through language or cuisine.
