The following thesis has attempted to investigate the possibilities of an architecture based in tradition and in innovation. An architecture that neither imitates nor mimics, but one that results from construction and the nature of materials used rather than from the application of decorative elements to disguise the structure of the building. The success of a project results from the architect's conceptual understanding of the traditions of the region in which the project exists, informed by local traditions yet not illustrating a revivalist form of vernacular construction. / Master of Architecture

Sedan implementeringen av on-load release funktionen på samtliga livbåtskrokar har det skett många olyckor som följd av introduktionen med detta system. Detta problem diskuterades under Internationella Maritima Organisationens Maritime Safety Committee, 89:e sammanträde 2011. Under detta sammanträde utvecklades ändringar och tillägg till koden för International Life-Saving Appliances med syfte att bemöta detta problem. Fokus för denna studien är resolution MSC.320(89) vilket formulerades under det sistnämnda mötet. Resolutionen lade fram nya krav rörande on-load release livbåtskrokar. Syftet med denna studie är att förstå hur MSC.320(89) har påverkat säkerheten vid hantering av livbåtar. Studien har utförts genom en kvalitativ litteraturstudie med komplementerande intervju. Genom att jämföra orsakande faktorer vid livbåtsolyckor med det nya kraven så har man kunnat spekulera fram positiva effekter gällande säkerheten. Implementeringsprocessen består av godkännande för utformning och funktion, rigorösa tester iland, samt granskningskrav för samtliga ombordvarande system. Minskning i antalet rapporter om olyckor vilket sker till följd av on-load release krokar efter implementeringsprocessen av MSC.320(89) tyder på att det sker ett färre antal olyckor relaterade till on-load release system. Denna minskning kan möjligtvis påverkas av implementeringen med fallprevention devices vilket kan ha som effekt att maskera svikt av on-load release system. Det övergripande resultatet från studien tyder på att MSC.320(89) har haft en positiv inverkan vad gäller säkerheten vid hantering av livbåtar. / There have occured many accidents as a result of the mandatory implementation of on-load release mechanisms on all lifeboats. In order to combat the problem amendments to the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea and the International Life-Saving Appliances Code were put forth during the Maritime Safety Committee, 89th session, 2011. The focus of this study lies on a product of this meeting: resolution MSC.320(89). The resolution presents new requirements for the design and function of on-load release systems. The purpose of this study is to understand how MSC.320(89) has influenced safety concerning the handling of lifeboats. A qualitative literature study with a complementary interview was used to conduct this study. By comparing causal factors of accidents involving on-load release systems with the new requirements stated in MSC.320(89) speculations could be made pertaining to improved safety conditions. The implementation process for the new requirements included a design review and performance test of existing and new on-load release and recovery systems. Moreover all systems onboard merchant vessels were either inspected, modified or replaced in order to be made compliant with the amended Life-Saving Appliance code. A decline in the number of accident reports concerning on-load release systems following implementation was observed during the data collection phase of this study. This decline may imply a reduction in the number of accidents caused by on-load release systems however the use of fall-prevention devices may have stopped failing on-load release systems from ending in catastrophe. The overriding conclusion of this study infers that resolution MSC.320(89) has effected safety concerning the handling of lifeboats in a positive manner.

Ombord på samtliga SOLAS-klassificerade fartyg (Safety Of Life At Sea, beskrivs i teorikapitlet) ska regelbundna livbåtsövningar genomföras. Livbåtsövningar innebär en risk för skada på både utrustningen och besättningsmedlemmarna som hanterar den. Syftet med den här studien är att utreda vad som krävs för att en livbåtsövning ska kunna genomföras på ett säkert sätt. Syftet besvaras genom att prata med besättningsmedlemmar som är med att skapa och har mycket erfarenhet av säkra livbåtsövningar. Det är en kvalitativ studie där total tio besättningsmedlemmar har intervjuats. Resultatet visar att säkerheten under en livbåtsövnings är beroende av fyra faktorer; utrustning, kompetens, samarbete och motivation. Dessa fyra faktorer arbetades fram under studiens gång och är baserade på tidigare utredningar, forskning och arbetets intervjusvar. Dessa delar påverkar varandra i nämnd ordning och om alla fyra delarna fungerar så kommer livbåtsövningen genomföras på ett säkert sätt. / Frequent abandon ship drills should be carried out on every ship covered by SOLAS (Safety Of Life At Sea, explained in the theoretical chapter). Abandon ship drill entails a risk of damage to the equipment and injury to the people handling it. The purpose of this study is to see into what is required to achieve a safe abandon ship drill. This is a qualitative study where the objective is answered by interviewing crew members that has experience of creating safe abandon ship drills. A total of ten crewmembers has been interviewed. The study shows that the safety of these drills is dependant on four factors; equipment, knowledge, cooperation and motivation. These factors where derived from previous reports, research and from the data obtained from the interviews. These factors are dependant on one another and can also be viewed as a spiral where one factor gives momentum to the next.

Trots att isen lagt sig på Bottenhavet avstannar inte handeln med de norrländska hamnarna. Många av de fartyg som anlöper dessa hamnar har som primär överlevnadsfarkost en frifallslivbåt, en typ av livbåt som av experter har blivit utdömda som värdelösa i samband med is. Även fartygens sekundära överlevnadssystem, som består av uppblåsbara flottar, har blivit kritiserat. Syftet med detta arbete var att undersöka vad svenska rederier med fartyg som bär denna typ av livbåt har för beredskap inför en eventuell nödsituation i isen.   Undersökningen har grundats på en kvalitativ intervjustudie med representanter från tre svenska rederier som bedriver vintersjöfart. Studien har visat på stora skillnader mellan de olika rederierna gällande rutiner för att operera i is. Inget av rederierna som intervjuats har haft en speciell plan för övergivandet av fartyg i isförhållanden, trots att de har en säkerhetsorganisation som blivit godkänd av den svenska Transportstyrelsen. / Even though the ice has formed on the Gulf of Bothnia the trade with the northern ports of Sweden and Finland does not cease. Many of the ships calling these ports have their primary survival craft in form the of a freefall lifeboat, a survival craft that experts have condemned as useless in ice. Even the ship's secondary survival system consisting of inflatable rafts has been criticized. The purpose of this study was to examine what kind of plan Swedish shipping companies, who operate vessels that carry this type of lifeboat, have to deal with a possible emergency situation in the ice. The study was based on qualitative interviews with representatives from three Swedish shipping companies operating in winter conditions. The study revealed great differences between the various companies in routine procedures when operating in ice. None of the interviewed companies had a special plan for the abandonment of ships in ice conditions, although they have a safety organization approved by the Swedish Transport Agency.
