After the theoretical debate on concepts such as truth and time in both worlds, the research aims to present the product, the book-report: The Faith from the Countryside – A history of courage of the northeastern people. The work chronicles the lives of four generations of a family in the rural area of Pernambuco struggling to win the main battle that life offers , the drought that punishes the region . Throughout the narrative, woven through literary journalism, new battles are presented in the life of this brave people, rescuing more than a century of history. / O presente relatório reflete sobre as características – proximidades e peculiaridades - do jornalismo e da biografia. Após, o debate teórico sobre conceitos como verdade e tempo em ambos os universos, a pesquisa se propõe a apresentar o produto, o livro-reportagem: A Fé do Interior – Uma história de coragem do povo nordestino. A obra narra à vida de quatro gerações de uma família no agreste pernambucano que lutam para vencer a principal batalha que a vida os oferece, a seca que castiga a região. Ao longo da narrativa, tecida através do jornalismo literário, novas batalhas são apresentadas da vida deste povo valente, resgatando mais de um século de história.

Esta pesquisa tem como objetivo a reunião de crônicas do historiador e crítico da literatura José Brito Broca (1903-1961), divulgadas entre 1921 e 1931, em periódicos de Guaratinguetá, no Rio de Janeiro e São Paulo. A documentação pertence à Coleção Brito Broca, no Centro de Documentação Cultural Alexandre Eulálio, no Instituto de Estudos da Linguagem da Unicamp. A dissertação ressalta três vertentes temáticas da produção inicial do jornalista: o memorialismo, a ficção e os aforismos. / This research is related to the gathering of chronicles by the historian and literature critic José Brito Broca (1903-1961) publicized between 1921 and 1931 in periodicals of Guaratinguetá, Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. The documentation belongs to Brito Broca Collection, Cultural Documentation Center Alexandre Eulálio at Institute of Language Studies, Unicamp. The dissertation emphasizes three discussed thematics from the initial production of the jornalist: memorials, fiction and propositions (thoughts).

A proposta é compreender o porquê da rubrica "literário" que os três livros-reportagens escolhidos possuem - a seleção foi feita por meio de uma pesquisa prévia, que apontava esses livros como marcos no chamado "Novo Jornalismo" (variante do nome jornalismo literário), tanto no cenário internacional quanto nacional; também porque são distintos entre si (fragmentos de histórias, romance narrativo e biografia, respectivamente) e, por isso, apresentaram mais dados como corpus do trabalho. Nesse sentido, lança-se mão dessas três obras, reconhecidas tanto pela crítica quanto pelo mercado editorial, para investigar um provável hibridismo entre os discursos literários e jornalísticos. Para tanto, duas questões são de fundamental importância, a saber, a linguagem e a relação do jornalismo e da literatura com o "real", obrigando a um estudo sobre os conceitos teóricos principalmente de literatura. / Abstract: This work aims at to introduce a study of the literary component in the call literary journalism, taking as starting point the analysis of three books: Hiroshima, of John Hersey, The cold blood, of Truman Capote, and Olga, of Fernando Morais. Proposal is to understand for what of heading "literary" that the three chosen book-news articles possess - the election was made by means of a previous research, that pointed these books as landmarks in the call "New Journalism" (variant of the journalism literary name), as much in how much national the international scene; also because they are distinct between itself (fragments of histories; narrative romance and biography, respectively) e, therefore, given more as corpus of the work. In this direction, we use of these in such a way three workmanships, recognized for the critical one how much for the publishing market, to investigate a probable hibridism between the literary and journalistic speeches. Esta dissertação discute os fenômenos que ocorrem na troca entre os jornalistas e as pessoas que narram suas histórias a eles. Ao lançar luzes sobre a viagem que cada um desses sujeitos pode fazer a partir daí, a hipótese é de que uma relação mais próxima entre jornalistas e fontes favorece a construção de uma narrativa diferenciada, que pode, inclusive, atingir um patamar artístico literário. Acompanhando a reflexão teórica, apresento uma narrativa experimental que fiz e resultou na elaboração de um perfil, seguindo as especificações do Jornalismo Literário Avançado. Realizo deduções e reflexões, tendo como âncora o experimento de campo, buscando trazer contribuições para a prática jornalística. Por isso, a Dissertação é um trabalho qualitativo, com certo grau de característica fenomenológica. Respeitando as esferas próprias de atuação do jornalismo, busco apoiar a reflexão teórica em conceitos da filosofia, da psicologia e da estética. Proponho também que essa questão seja abordada de maneira mais consistente nos cursos de graduação, durante o processo de formação dos futuros jornalistas. / This essay discusses the phenomena which take place on exchanges between journalists and those who tell them their own stories. On casting a light upon the journey that each of these individuals may make from thereon, the hypothesis is that a closer bond between journalists and their sources favours the building of a narrative of distinction, which may also reach a literary artistic level. Following the theoretical reflections, I hereby present an experimental narrative I have written and which lead to the establishment of a profile in accordance with the specifications of Advanced Literary Journalism. I have made deductions and reflections based on the field study, seeking to bring contributions to the practise of journalism. The essay have the aspect of a qualitative study with some degree of phenomenological characteristics. Respecting the spheres pertinent to the conduction of journalism, this essay seeks to uphold the theoretical reflection in philosophical, psychological and aesthetic concepts. I have also proposed that this question be addressed in the most in consistent manner in journalism courses, in the development process of future journalists.

Esta tesis se propone lleva a cabo un análisis de gran alcance del periodismo literario escrito entre 1914 y 1918. Para ello, explora dieciséis obras escritas por autores británicos y norteamericanos que están situadas en una zona liminal desde un punto de vista físico, genérico, temporal y espacial. El viaje físico que llevó a estos periodistas a la zona bélica y las características de dicho viaje permiten agrupar los textos que resultaron de estas expediciones bajo un mismo marco teórico-antropológico. Este marco teórico se basa en las teorías sobre liminalidad tal y como las articuló originalmente Arnold van Gennep en Los Ritos de Paso (1909), que fueron más tarde desarrolladas por Victor Turner. Además de clasificar, contextualizar y discutir críticamente un conjunto de obras que no han sido comparadas con anterioridad, este estudio da respuesta a cuatro preguntas fundamentales: en primer lugar, esta tesis investiga si los textos analizados responden a los marcos críticos con los que hemos aprendido a interpretar la guerra, sobre todo en lo referente al concepto de “el mito de la guerra” establecido por Samuel Hynes en su estudio A War Imagined. En segundo lugar, esta tesis evalúa si algunos de los cambios retóricos y estilísticos que Paul Fussell identificó en la literatura de los combatientes se pueden encontrar en los textos analizados. Asimismo, atiende al desarrollo cronológico de la guerra y evalúa si existe una variación en el modo en que ésta fue representada a medida que avanzó el conflicto. En tercer lugar, el estudio adopta una perspectiva comparatista, confrontando los textos escritos desde ambos lados del Atlántico, para determinar hasta qué punto la nacionalidad de los autores y la postura de sus países en un estadio concreto de la guerra afectó a su forma de escribir. Finalmente, se propone determinar si existen diferencias sustanciales en la forma en que hombres y mujeres concibieron y retrataron su experiencia liminal en el frente.

This study examines the similarities in the historical development and stated values of the American literary journalism and modern storytelling movements within the framework of communication and narrative theory. In addition, the techniques and subjects of oral storytelling and literary journalism, as described in professional publications and manuals for storytellers and reporters, are compared for similarities. Storytelling and literary journalism have grown apart and come together to peak again during times of social upheaval, first at the turn of the century and again in the 1960s. In addition, the two professions are related by the common goal of celebrating individual experience, the life of the common folk, and the birth of interactive communities that offer an alternative to mass media and mass culture. Overlapping techniques include the use of simple slots, the personal "voice" of the narrator, character development through dialogue and scenes, and an emphasis on theme.

Abstract Close to the Source is comprised of a series of nonfiction vignettes about the artisan, agricultural, and culinary methods of Italy. In Close to the Source the human relationship with nature, food, and art is reexamined while a series of rich characters help bring the material to life. Through interviews, research, and first-hand experiences, the author attempts to archive fading artisan and food-related techniques and rituals. In the process, a cultural critique about the importance of the practical arts in contemporary times emerges. The thesis contains four sections: Terra/Land; Art and Artisans; Pane/Bread; and Compagnia/Company.

Esta pesquisa consiste no estudo das relações culturais entre o Brasil e a França a partir da análise das crônicas literárias de José Brito Broca, publicadas exclusivamente em jornais e revistas do Brasil. O tema é abordado considerando a presença de escritores e intelectuais brasileiros na França e de escritores e intelectuais franceses no Brasil. Além de demonstrar a preocupação recorrente do crítico com as marcas francesas em nosso meio literário, este estudo fortalece a discussão das relações entre os dois países em diferentes momentos da história. / This research consists in surveying the cultural relationship between Brazil and France based on the analysis of José Brito Brocas literary chronicles which have been published exclusively in Brazilian newspapers and magazines. The research is carried out taking into account the presence of Brazilian writers and intelectuals living in France as well as French writers and intelectuals located in Brazil. It demonstrates the critics recurrent concern for the French signs in our literary enviroment. Furthermore, it strengthens the discussion of the relationship between the two countries in different moments of History.

I propose that the use of characters is a key strategy of in-depth journalistic texts, as the major report and the book report. I also point out that this same strategy, yet to be properly explored in the field of research on media discourse, is one of the main hallmarks of the so-called Literary Journalism. The theoretical and conceptual foundations of this thesis are based on authors who have works on the construction of characters in literature and other discursive genres such as Antonio Candido, Oswald Ducrot, Tzvetan Todorov and Terry Eagleton, among several others. The main object of analysis is the book Abusado, written by the Brazilian journalist Caco Barcellos. / Este trabalho apresenta conceitos relacionados à compreensão de uma das vias de aproximação entre o jornalismo e a literatura: a construção de personagens. Proponho que o uso de personagens se apresenta como uma estratégia fundamental na elaboração de textos jornalísticos aprofundados, como a grande reportagem e o livro-reportagem. E indico que essa mesma estratégia, ainda não devidamente explorada no campo de pesquisas sobre o discurso jornalístico, é uma das principais marcas distintivas do chamado jornalismo literário. O embasamento teórico-conceitual desta tese se ampara em autores que têm obras sobre a construção de personagens na literatura e em outros gêneros discursivos, como Antonio Candido, Oswald Ducrot, Tzvetan Todorov e Terry Eagleton, entre vários outros. O principal objeto de análise é o livro Abusado, do jornalista brasileiro Caco Barcellos.

Taking into consideration composition processes, tools of style and thematical hybridism, this study discusses if these narratives can be considered as a significant genre of post-modern culture. Three books appear at first: The last opium den, by Nick Tosches; Woman of Porto Pim, by Antonio Tabucchi; and A fortune-teller told me, by Tiziano Terzani. In these books the authors narrate their impressions while travelling through the southeast of Asia and also through the archipelago of Azores. The Bakhtinian notion of dialogism sustains the theoretical basis of this paper, which compares the two texts between themselves and the others. / Este estudo investiga de que modo a Narrativa de Viagem se articula com a ficção literária. Levando em conta processos de composição, recursos de estilo e o hibridismo temático, discute se essa narrativa constitui um gênero representativo da cultura pós-moderna. Três obras aparecem em primeiro plano: A última casa de ópio (The last opium den), de Nick Tosches; Mulher de Porto Pim (Donna di Porto Pim), de Antonio Tabucchi; e Um adivinho me disse (Un indovino mi disse), de Tiziano Terzani. Nessas obras, os autores relatam suas impressões de viagem por países do sudeste asiático e pelo arquipélago dos Açores. A noção bakhtiniana de dialogismo permeia o lastro teórico deste trabalho, correlacionando os textos entre si e a diversos outros.
