Constraining Physics Beyond the Standard Model with Emerging Jets using the ATLAS ExperimentThor, Simon January 2022 (has links)
Dark matter, the unknown matter that constitutes 85% of all matter in the universe, is one of the greatest mysteries in fundamental physics. One theory that might explain dark matter predicts that there are long-lived particles known as dark pions. If these were created in a particle accelerator, they could decay inside the detector, resulting in particles that seemingly "emerge" from nothing. This phenomenon is known as emerging jets. In this study, emerging jets are simulated with various values of the dark pion average lifetime, dark pion mass, and mediator particle mass. These simulations are compared with a search for displaced vertices conducted by the ATLAS collaboration, allowing one to reinterpret the ATLAS results to constrain the parameter values that the emerging-jets model can have. This study simulates and constrains the allowed values for the dark pion mass, dark pion average life time and mediator mass with 95% confidence level. This is the first study to use results from the ATLAS experiment to constrain the emerging-jets model, as well as the first study to exclude this region of the parameter space.

The Early Postpartum Experience Of Previously Infertile MothersLadores, Sigrid 01 January 2013 (has links)
The lived experiences of previously infertile mothers in the early postpartum period have not been previously studied. The purpose of the research was to explore the experiences of previously infertile mothers during their early postpartum period. Colaizzi’s (1978) approach to descriptive phenomenological inquiry was used to analyze the interview data obtained from twelve first-time, previously infertile mothers. These new mothers, aged 27 to 43 years, were interviewed twice. The first interview focused on eliciting descriptions of new motherhood in the early postpartum period after overcoming infertility. The second interview validated the interpretations from the first interview and provided additional information and reflection. Two main themes emerged that described the early postpartum experience of first-time, previously infertile mothers: 1) Lingering Identity as Infertile; and 2) Gratitude for the Gift of Motherhood. Participants reported that their lingering identity as infertile and immense gratitude for the gift of motherhood propelled them to establish unrealistic expectations to be the perfect mother. When they were unable to live up to being the perfect mother, they censored their feelings of inadequacy, guilt, and shame. Findings from this study sensitize healthcare providers to the difficulties faced by previously infertile women during their transition to motherhood.

Negotiating individual and collective narratives in a contested urban space. An investigation of storytelling dynamics in contemporary Bradford.Rohse, Melanie C.C. January 2014 (has links)
This thesis explores the dynamics of narrative production and contestation within individuals’ stories and the collective stories of the communities in which they live. The research is focused on trying to understand the relationship between public stories constructed about place and community, and the stories told by the inhabitants of those places.
A case study in the city of Bradford provides a focus for inquiry. A qualitative research design is utilised, combining theory with primary data collection and analysis. A narrative analysis of national, academic and local stories about Bradford is used to disaggregate collective narratives of the city and explore the relationship between popular, political and academic discourses. It provides a context for the analysis of in-depth interviews with a range of inhabitants from a selected geographic area within Bradford, centred on how their individual stories relate to the identified collective stories of Bradford.
Analysis of the fieldwork data shows that individuals are often engaged in complex negotiations of public discourse in ways that may reinforce and contest existing stories, but also complement them with parallel stories that neither reinforce nor contest but construct a different narrative. It reveals and reflects on apparent contradictions within everyday storytelling, for example, how nostalgia can be displayed about harsh times of socio-economic decline, or how attitudes to change over time can be variably positive and negative depending both on the speakers’ positioning of themselves and of the interviewer, and the speakers’ purpose in the interaction.

Background: Diabetes mellitus type 1 is a common endemic disease that leads to insulin deficiency in the body. Cardiovascular diseases are one of the most common complications linked to diabetes mellitus type 1. An individual with diabetes must take on a lot of responsibility for the treatment to work optimally. Aim: The aim of this literature study was to summarize experiences of individuals living with type 1 diabetes mellitus. Methods: A descriptive literature study based on the results from 13 scientific articles with a qualitative design. All research was conducted using PubMed. Main Results: The results showed that persons with diabetes mellitus type 1 experience a lack of knowledge regarding diabetes mellitus type 1 and how it’s different from type 2. There is improvement to be made regarding spreading health information to the public. It also showed, even though unclear exactly how, that family and friends are an important part of living with the disease. Diabetes mellitus type 1 is experienced as a demanding disease and a capacity to perform self-care combined with individual-focused care are significant components of the treatment. Conclusion: To live with diabetes mellitus type 1 is demanding and presupposes a capacity to apply self-care in combination with individual-focused care. There exists experienced lack of knowledge in society regarding the differences between diabetes mellitus type 1 and 2 but also regarding diabetes mellitus type 1 in general. To increase the public knowledge and knowledge among healthcare personnel regarding diabetes mellitus type 1 would improve life in general and treatment of the disease. In the palm of my hand : Being a parent to a premature baby in the neonatal care departmentArellano Tandoc, Maureen, Dzhansuzyan, Emma January 2023 (has links)
15 million infants in the whole world, about 6000 i Sweden, are born prematurely every year. Having an infant earlier than expected affects parents and awakens different feelings. For the parents to welcome the new member of the family, they must be able to handle their worries and fears about the infant’s health status. Parents must be able to be part of their child´s care. Nurses should strive to work having the whole family in focus and give the parents opportunity to develop their parenthood. The goal of this literature review is to illuminate parents´ lived experience of having a premature infant in the neonatal care unit. Nine articles with qualitative design are included in this literature review. The data analysis resulted into four main themes and nine subthemes. The result shows the parents´ lived experience of shock, fear, and sadness as well as hope and gladness with the birth of the premature child. Furthermore, the result shows the different hinder to parent-child connection. The result describes parents´ experience of support from different sources – co-parent, health care workers, other relatives, and friends. It also shows that parents who are religious found it easier to hold on during that time. Parents´ thoughts and feelings also varied depending on the information and guidance they got from the nurses. Main findings that are relevant for nurses´ roll and how good healthcare can be given are further described in the discussion. Parent involvement, communication and accurate information are important in promoting parents´ wellbeing.

A Narrative Analysis of Adults’ Stories About Their Upbringing with an Ill or Disabled SiblingPagoldh, Evelina, Olsson, Karin January 2024 (has links)
Through a narrative analysis of four stories, this study examines the lived experiences of so-called "glass children" during their upbringing with a sibling. The objective is to enhance the understanding of how children are affected by growing up with a sibling requiring high care due to disability or illness. The narrative analysis involves three steps: 1) analysing each story; 2) identifying main narratives; and 3) analysing main narratives. The narrative analysis is rooted in poststructuralist narrative theory but grounded in social constructivism. The analysis yielded two main narratives: normalization and internalization of social roles. Themes capturing the complexity and nuance of these narratives could be extracted. From the normalization narrative, the following themes emerged: normalization for society; envisioning an alternative identity, and; conforming to societal norms. The internalization of social roles narrative could be subdivided into: navigating assigned social roles; feeling responsibility and guilt; and struggling with self-identity. The conclusions drawn suggest that glass children have a complex relationship with norms and normalization, and that assigned roles, coupled with expectations, guilt, and responsibility, impede the ability to develop a sense of identity.

Inserting financial instability in strategic management of commercial real estate companies: A corporate perspective on the meaning of the phenomenon of financial instabilitySagemann, Bernd J. January 2018 (has links)
The global financial system was marked by several crises frequently
connected to Commercial Real Estate (CRE). As a precursor to financial crisis
events, the phase of Financial Instability (FI) is generally considered from a
more macroeconomic perspective with a focus on systemic risk to better
identify environmental dynamics in the run-up to such a crisis. However, there
is no common understanding about FI on a corporate level that enables
organisations to undertake such a strategic analysis.
This study aims to explore the corporate meaning of the phenomenon from a
managerial perspective. It emphasises executives` lived experience in FI and
the underlying procedures in organizational sensemaking.
The data was collected using semi-structured interviews with senior executives
of German CRE companies with reference to the Global Financial Crisis (GFC)
2007/08. Within the social constructivist paradigm, the study adopts a
hermeneutic phenomenological research approach using the theoretical lenses
of van Manen's ‘lifeworld existentials' and Weick's ‘properties of sensemaking'.
The corporate definition of FI that emerged from this study extends existing
ones. The revealed procedures indicate that organisational sensemaking was
underrepresented in such a phase. From this, qualitative indicators and
implications are developed grounded in behavioural dynamics of the market
participants.
The findings of this research contribute to theoretical and applied knowledge
about FI. The study proposes the systematic incorporation of this definition and
sensemaking procedures by executives and institutionalises the monitoring of
the developed indicators in SM to better control a CRE company prior, during,
or after a phase of FI.

Creating Copreneurial Identities. A phenomenological study of how copreneurs make sense of their lived experience of work and family life in copreneurial businessMuscatelli, Sophie M. January 2020 (has links)
The purpose of my research is to examine how copreneurial couples make sense of their lived experience of working in a copreneurial business and shape their mutual identity. The research context is copreneurs operating micro-businesses in the Greek leisure and tourism industry. Given the size of the tourism industry worldwide and the fact that many businesses within this sector are family-owned, this is an important area of inquiry.
The aim is twofold:
1. To build theory in the field of entrepreneurship by focusing specifically on the undertheorized topic of how copreneurs understand and shape their identity and responsibilities within copreneurial businesses
2. To bring an under-utilized methodology to entrepreneurship studies, that of interpretive phenomenological analysis (IPA), as a means of enhancing the understanding of the lived experience of copreneurs. Drawing on phenomenological philosophy, IPA foregrounds the meanings research participants give to their experience and therefore offers rich interpretations from copreneurial couples
While taking an idiographic approach, which focuses on the first-person experience of copreneurs in a particular context, the findings will resonate with other copreneurs. The contribution of this research therefore lies in advancing our understanding of copreneurship and familial entrepreneurship by elucidating the interrelationship between personal and business partnerships. The study makes visible the often invisible recursive links between paid work and family life for men and women
