Perceived Leadership Practices of Student Affairs Professionals: An Analysis of Demographic Factors.

Student affairs professionals in higher education are expected to provide leadership in many ways on their campuses. Obtaining a more complete picture of the leadership characteristics of the profession is therefore important in informing those in the profession who provide continuing professional development programming and for those who teach in graduate student affairs programs. The purpose of this quantitative research study was to determine whether there were differences in the perceived leadership practices of student affairs professionals when analyzed by the independent variables of race, gender, level of current position, age, and highest degree earned. The instrument used in this survey was the Leadership Practices Inventory-Self (LPI-Self) originally developed by Kouzes and Posner (1988) and updated in 2003. The LPI contains 30 statements, organized into five subscales, describing behaviors rated on a 10-point Likert-type scale. The five subscales are Model the Way, Inspire a Shared Vision, Challenge the Process, Enable Others to Act, and Encourage the Heart. The instrument measures an individual's perceived use of the different behaviors in each leadership practice. An email was sent to 2,807 student affairs professionals in the Southern Region (Region III) of NASPA containing an invitation to participate in this study. A total of 713 surveys were completed for an overall response rate of 25.4%. A significant statistical difference was found in the leadership practice Encourage the Heart for race. Black student affairs professionals' perceptions of their leadership practice of Encourage the Heart were statistically significantly higher than their Hispanic and White counterparts. In addition, a significant statistical difference was found for the independent variable level of current position where senior-level student affairs professionals scored statistically higher than mid- and entry-level professionals. Furthermore, for the independent variable highest degree earned, student affairs professionals with doctoral degrees scored significantly higher on all five leadership practices than student affairs professionals with masters' or bachelors' degrees. However, no significant differences were found between student affairs professionals with bachelors' or a masters' degrees. This study supports the idea that leadership development may be enhanced through experience and graduate work which results in obtaining a doctorate. The findings also suggest that student affairs professionals in mid- and entry- positions may benefit from development and pre-service programs where the leadership practice inventory is administered and professionals are made aware of their leadership practices .

The Impact of Midbrain Cauterize Size on Auditory and Visual Responses' Distribution

This thesis presents several statistical analysis on a cooperative project with Dr. Pallas and Yuting Mao from Biology Department of Georgia State University. This research concludes the impact of cauterize size of animals’ midbrain on auditory and visual response in brains. Besides some already commonly used statistical analysis method, such as MANOVA and Frequency Test, a unique combination of Permutation Test, Kolmogorov-Smirnov Test and Wilcoxon Rank Sum Test is applied to our non-parametric data. Some simulation results show the Permutation Test we used has very good powers, and fits the need for this study. The result confirms part of the Biology Department’s hypothesis statistically and enhances more complete understanding of the experiments and the potential impact of helping patients with Acquired Brain Injury.

A comparative study of mechanical performance characteristics between treated and untreated ham nets

Mechanical performance characteristics were compared for 100% polyester treated and untreated weft-knitted mesh fabric that are used to contain dry-ageing hams, commonly referred to as ham nets. The treated net was coated with a patent-pending food-grade chemical solution (40% Propylene Glycol + 1% Propylene Glycol Alginate + 1% Carrageenan) to control ham mites. Both treated and untreated ham nets were compared for mechanical performance characteristics based on the following standards: abrasion resistance (ASTM D4966), elastic recovery (BS EN 14704-1:2005), breaking strength (ASTM D5034-09), and bursting strength (ASTM D3786). Results indicate that the coating had minimal to no impact on the mechanical performance characteristics of ham nets. SEM images also showed no negative effect on the fiber morphology due to the applied chemical solution. Findings support the use of treated ham nets to increase the end-use functionality and provide stakeholders an option for integrated pest management without compromising performance needs.

本研究的主要目的在探討台灣省高級職業學校教務行政續效與教學效能之關係,及學校行政人員、學校資源對教務行政續效之影響,並且嘗試建立教務行政續效及教學效能評鑑之指標。本研究以台灣省教育廳統計所編有關高級職業學校的統計資料為主。 並且自編高級業學校教務行政暨教學效能調查表。調查全省八十個公立高級職業學校的教務行政既教學效能有關資料,共得有效樣本七十五個。在研究方法上,以多元迴歸預測高級職業學校行行人員人口變項、學校資源、教務續效指標對教學效能之影響。以單因子多變量分析(One-Way MANOVA)探討高級職業學校不同的教務續效、學校行政人員人口變項、學校資源對教務續效的影響。以因素分析(Factor Analysis) 抽取各變項之共同因素,並且以共變數結構分析(LISREL)探討其因果關係。以 群分析(Cl u ster Analysis)探討各學校教務行政續效、教學效能是否有差異? 玆將主要研究結果臚列於下: (一)學校行政人員的學歷、召開教學研究會的次數、辦理教師進修的次數、教學圖書冊數、依教師專長排課面分比對教師教學知能競賽獲獎有顯著的影響。 (二)學校行政人員的學歷、教務經費、教師總人數、召開教學研究會資料、辦理教師在職進修資料、教務行政電腦化百分比、教學圖畫冊數、依教師專長排課面分比對百位教師研提報告篇數具有顯著影響。 (三)學校行政人員的學歷、教務經費、教師總人數、召開教學研究會資料、辦理教師在職進修次數、教務行政電腦化百分比、教學圖劃冊數、依教專長排課面分比、教師教學知能競賽獲獎數、面位教師研提報告篇數百分率對學生升學率具有顯著的影響。 (四)學校行政人員的學歷、教務經費、召教學研究會次數、辦理教師在職進修資數、教學圖書冊數依教師專長排課百分比、教師教學知能競賽獲獎數、百位數師研提報告編數對學生操行成續達八十分的通過率具有顯著的影響。 (五)教務行政電腦化百分比、依數師專長排課面分比、百位教師研提報告篇數、學校行政人員的學歷對學生技能檢定的通過率具有顯著的影響。 (六)校長學校行政知能、學校行政人員行政知能、學校資源、教務行政續效、教學效能間之因果關係在本研究中并未獲得完全證實,但教務行政續效及學校產能之各評鑑指標都達極顯著水準。 (七)有關高級職業學校教學效能之研究,全部七十五個學校將學生表現投入群集分析共可分成優秀學校(十二個)、良好學校(二十一個)普通學校(二十個),欠佳學校 (二十二個)。將教師教學知能投入群彙分析共可分成優秀學校 (四個)、良好學校 (十二個)、普通學校 (五十八個)。 最後根據研究結果,本研究提出強化教務行政續效、教學效能之具體建議,並對未來之研究方向提出建議。

O uso das técnicas de análise multivariada está reservado aos grandes centros de pesquisa, µas grandes empresas e ao ambiente acad^emico. Essas técnicas s~ao muito interessantes porque utilizam simultaneamente todas as variáveis respostas na interpretação teórica do conjunto de dados, levando em conta as correlações existentes entre elas. Uma das principais barreiras para a utilização dessas técnicas é o seu desconhecimento pelos pesquisadores interessados na pesquisa quantitativa. A outra dificuldade é que a grande maioria de softwares que permitem esse tipo de análise (SAS, MINITAB, BMDP, STATISTICA, S-PLUS, SYSTAT, etc.) não são de domínio público. A disseminação do uso das técnicas multivariadas pode melhorar a qualidade das pesquisas, proporcionar uma economia relativa de tempo e de custo, e facilitar a interpretação das estruturas dos dados, diminuindo a perda de informação. Neste trabalho, foram confirmadas algumas vantagens das técnicas multivariadas sobre as univariadas na análise de dados de expe- rimentos agropecuários. As análises foram realizadas com o auxílio do software R, um software aberto, \"amigável\" e gratuito, com inúmeros recursos disponíveis. / The use of the techniques of multivariate analysis is restricted to large centers of research, the higher companies and the academic environment. These techniques are very inte- resting because of the use of all answers variables simultaneously in theoretical interpretation of the data set, considering the correlations between them. One of the main obstacle to the usage of these techniques is that researchers interested in the quantitative research do not know them. The other di±culty is that most of the software that allow this type of analysis (SAS, MINITAB, BMDP, STATISTICA, S-PLUS, SYSTAT etc.) are not in public domain. Publishing the use of Multivariate techniques can improve the quality of the research, decrease the time spend and the cost, and make easy the interpretation of the structures of the data without cause damage of the information. In this report, were con¯rmed some advantages of the multivariate techniques in a univariate analysis for data of agricultural experiments. The analysis were taken with R software, a open software, \"friendly\" and free, with many statistical resources available.

雖然允許變異數-共變數矩陣異質之LISREL-MANOVA模式能克服MANOVA在理論上的的限制(變異數-共變數矩陣同質性的假設),而帶有潛在變項的LISREL-MANOVA能解決MANOVA分析目的上的限制(不能整體考驗多組在潛在變項平均數向量上的差異),但仍有一些問題尚未解決與釐清。其一是MANOVA後續分析的問題,其二是帶有潛在變項之LISRES-MANOVA的統計特性以及切割現象所造成的影響。據此,本論文的主要研究目的有二:(一)發展允許變異數-共變數矩陣異質之LISREL-MANOVA的部份考驗模式以解決MANOVA後續分析中同質性假設的限制,並以模擬分析的方式驗證之;(二)利用模擬分析的方式來探討帶有潛在變項之LISREL-MANOVA的統計特性。   依據上述研究目的,本論文具體的研究問題有二:(一)在變異數-變異數-共變數數矩陣同質或變異數-變異數-共變數數矩陣異質的狀態下,允許變異數-共變數異質之LISREL-MANOVA的部份考驗和傳統MANOVA的後續分析(單變量F考驗、區別函數標準化加權和典型變量相關)何者較為優異?(二)是否有切割現象、切割的程度、樣本大小以及估計方法等因子對帶有潛在變項之LISREL-MANOVA的估計有何影響?   針對上述研究問題,本論文主要的研究結果有二:(一)在變異數-共變數同質的狀態下,允許變異數-共變數異質之LISREL-MANOVA的估計結果與單變量F考驗、典型變量相關一致,但較區別函數標準化加權顯著的優異;在變異數-共變數異質的狀態下,允許變異數-共變數異異質之LISREL-MANOVA的估計結果較單變量F考驗、區別函數標準化加權和典型變量相關優異。(二)就帶有潛在變項LISREL-MANOVA而言:1.切割現象會使參數估計值較不精確因而使整體配適考驗容易達顯著。2.切割的比例越大會使整體配適考驗達顯著的機率急遽的上升。3.在切割比例固定下,樣本越大越容易使整體配適考驗達顯著,且會增加WLS估計法犯型Ⅰ錯誤的可能性及GLS和ML估計法的統計考驗力。以及4.在GLS、ML和WLS三種估計法中,WLS較不容易使整配適考驗達顯著,但較容易犯型Ⅰ錯誤;GLS和ML較容易使整體配適考驗達顯著且容易犯型Ⅱ錯誤。   最後,本論文根據上述研究結果做成結論,並對應用上及未來研究方向上提出建議。
