The intention is document these memories of the characters who helped in the formation (colonization) of the Portão do Ocoí District – Missal/PR, that even in the middle of the land tenure conflicts, caused the construction of the Church/School, which marks the creation and subsequent transition as Public institution, exploring the senses of space in four verbs: occupy, name, live and work. As it deals with research on memory history of local education, it was considered what already exists that is the didactic book, used as official source of the memory of the origin and plots of local education. Next to this official source, were recorded memories by oral history. We sought to understand and bring to writing the density of these memories and their conflicts at the same time demonstrate how they are articulated with the history education in Missal City and what the relationship of the school in the process of territorial occupation in the Portão do Ocoí, Territory of the municipality of Missal/ Paraná. I chose to research from the formation of the District in 1961 until 2017, since there are still many living inhabitants who helped in the formation of these communities and who are still part of it, thus helping to insert significant and new elements in the formation history of our municipality, in this case in the history of education / Na realização desta pesquisa foi utilizada dois tipos de fontes: orais e escritas, ou seja, realização de uma pesquisa bibliográfica juntamente com uma pesquisa de campo, ambas tratadas como entrevista semiestruturada, com o intuito de documentar as memórias dos personagens que auxiliaram na formação do Distrito do Portão do Ocoí, que, mesmo em meio aos conflitos da posse da terra, fizeram com que ocorresse a construção da Igreja/escola, edificação que marca a criação e a posterior transição como instituição pública, explorando os sentidos do espaço em quatro verbos: ocupar, nomear, morar e trabalhar.

Perceiving voids : memory and sight afflictions in contemporary cinema

Marineo, Francesco January 2014 (has links)
My thesis focuses on the perceptive afflictions caused by alteration of the normal biological functioning of sight and memory. These afflictions are related to the redefinition and disgregation of the classical and postclassical cinematographic characters, and affect cinematographic language, establishing a dialectical relation with the filmic image that contaminates our spectatorial perception. In the first chapter I propose a different reading of a few moments in film history, turning points in which a modification of the ordinary sensorial patterns has been introduced. From the German Expressionism to the late authorial experiments of the 60s, there is a sort of hidden history of film that passes through the continuous redefinition of the audience sensory activity. The different perspective upon broadly studied topics leads to the analysis of contemporary cinema: my thesis tries to investigate the reasons that led cinema to continually increase the representation of perceptive afflictions during the last years, and theses “affected” narratives of afflictions and dysfunctions have interesting effects upon so called “normal” perception of the reality surrounding us. The chapters 2 and 3 respectively analyze memory disorders and different dysfunctions of sight: these elements determine alterations in the ‘normal’ and ‘sensory’ perception of reality. They work as narrative factors changing the visual filmic instruments and redefining the role of the subject (and his/her uncertain definition of identity) in contemporary narratives that show how new technologies are profoundly transforming (and enhancing) the perceptive mechanisms involved in our spectatorial activity. In this work I analyze those films that are mostly committed to a clear and readable narration. My study primarily concentrates on American cinema of the last 30 years – with particular attention to popular Hollywood productions – because Hollywood has become the privileged ‘laboratory’ for the negotiation of gaze and images in the contemporary mediascape, while during the classical era experimental and avant-garde cinema were the “place” in which audience experienced the most important redefinitions of the boundaries between different types of mediated perception.

The Patchwork-Quilter as the Storyteller : MY DEAD DOG!

Towndrow, Lizzie January 2016 (has links)
Objects can evoke our most vivid memories and sensory emotions, through the stories that have been engraved into them across their lifetime. Throughout history, patchwork-quilting has been used to tell stories, hide messages and hold histories. They are seen as objects of warmth, comfort and security, inanimate extensions of ourselves that store our most complex sentiments and memories- becoming heirlooms that are kept in the families and communities for generations, preserving our histories and material culture.    I intend to explore the inseparable relationship between craft and narrative within quilts, whilst re-imagining the quilts forms and functions in order to communicate stories more vividly. To do so I will use my memories of My Dead Dog, Henry, to illustrate narratives and embed them into quilted objects to stage as a tableau of artifacts. I intend to encourage the viewer to realise the imagined, through a haptic experience of my material world, whilst simultaneously creating my own heirlooms that can be passed down so my stories are not forgotten. / <p>The full thesis contains copyrighted material</p><p>which has been removed in the published version</p>

Tagging and capture hypothesis of synaptic plasticity : the roles of calmodulin kinases and the phenomenon of behavioural tagging

Redondo Pena, Roger Lluis January 2010 (has links)
The aims of this thesis were (1) to learn about the identities of the molecules involved in the maintenance of long-term potentiation (LTP), and (2) to develop and test a behavioural paradigm capable of elucidating the interaction between these molecular processes and the persistence of long-term memories. By improving the stability of field recordings in in vitro electrophysiology, it was possible to investigate the molecular processes that determine the long-term changes in synaptic efficacy. In these experiments, the interactions between two convergent inputs onto the same neuronal population in the CA1 region of the hippocampus were monitored for over ten hours. Analytically powerful three-pathway protocols using sequential strong and weak tetanization in varying orders, and test stimulation over long periods of time after LTP-induction, enabled a pharmacological dissociation of potentially distinct roles of the calmodulin kinase (CaMK) pathways in LTP. This places constraints on the mechanisms by which synaptic potentiation, and possibly memories, become stabilized. The experiments show that tag setting is blocked by the CaMK inhibitor KN-93 that, at low concentration primarily blocks CaMKII, whereas a CaMKK inhibitor, STO-609, selectively limits the synthesis or the availability of plasticity related proteins (PRPs). To test whether memories can be subject to modulation by independent experiences, behavioural studies tested the possibility of lengthening the persistence of a relatively weak memory by pairing its induction with an event capable of inducing the synthesis of the required PRPs. Corticosterone-dependent stressful events like a cold swim proved to interfere and weaken spatial memories. On the other hand, the exploration of a novel environment succeeded in rescuing the decay of a weak memory. The effect of the exploration of the novel environment was dependent on NMDA and dopamine receptor activation, as well as protein synthesis. These results are discussed in relation to the synaptic tagging and capture hypothesis and a novel model of the neuronal mechanisms underlying synaptic plasticity is developed from them.

Sleep and sleep timing in relation to light and emotional processing

Porcheret, Kate L. January 2012 (has links)
Sleep is a complex process: the timing of sleep is regulated by two systems (the sleep homeostat and the circadian clock) and there are many potential functions of sleep. The aim of this thesis was to investigate: the impact of light on the regulation of sleep timing (study 1) and the role of sleep in emotional processing (study 2). Study 1 used natural variations in environmental light levels at different geographical locations, to examine the influence of daily light irradiance on sleep timing and chronotype using the Munich chronotype questionnaire (MCTQ). 6443 students were included in this study from six universities from the northern and southern hemispheres. Students in southern hemisphere cities had earlier sleep timings than those in the northern cities. Daily irradiance was higher in the southern hemisphere cities. The amount of time spent outside, age and sex, but not daily irradiance, influenced sleep timings. Study 2 explored the impact of an analogue traumatic event (trauma film) in students who were either sleep deprived or not sleep deprived on intrusive memories ("flashbacks"), sleep physiology and the impact of an increased risk of a mood disorder on this relationship. In this study the sleep deprived participants (n=19) reported fewer intrusive memories to the trauma film than those not sleep deprived (n=22). A change in sleep physiology was observed in the first sleep period following the trauma film, which was more pronounced in the sleep deprived group: increased levels of arousal, REM density and activity in the occipital region. Only three participants at-risk of a mood disorder completed study 2: their data are presented as case studies. In conclusion this research has demonstrated that differences in sleep timings exist between cities in the southern and northern hemispheres and has confirmed that many factors can influence sleep timing. It has also been demonstrated that following a highly emotional event not sleeping may have a beneficial effect, which has implications for the treatment of people after trauma.

Episodická pamäť virtuálnych agentov: Klamné spomienky / Episodická pamäť virtuálnych agentov: Klamné spomienky

Čermák, Michal January 2013 (has links)
The goal of this work is to design a model of episodic memory for virtual agents capable of creating false memories and implement its prototype. The model architecture is inspired by present day knowledge about human episodic memory. Core structures in our model are the chronobags storing details of experienced episodes, and the schemabag storing the general scripts for all experienced events. The episodes are stored in the form of AND-OR trees and it is possible to derive missing details from the stored scripts during recall. We followed the work of Burkert and implemented a prototype of designed memory model in Java using the Pogamut 3 Framework. The model is parameterizable and it is evaluated in several experiments. In these experiments we looked on the trends in correct and incorrect recalls over time and we simulated the experiment demonstrating existence of room schemata. We compared the results produced by our model with the data from psychological researches and we showed that our model can produce false memories similar to false memories recollected by humans.

Dangerous Memories in Time of Cultural Amnesia: Challenges for the Church in Mexico

Gonzalez Sanchez, Ricardo January 2010 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Roberto Goizueta / In the context of a globalized and postmodern world, there is a vector of thought in Mexican culture that remains fixated on the present, invested in the urgency of the moment, and content with hurried decisions in political and economic matters. Such a mindset makes little room for memories and, in fact, promotes rapid forgetfulness, especially of uncomfortable memories. Nevertheless, another vector of thought simultaneously persists, one that prizes memories, emphasizes traditions and ancestral anamnetic forms, and is quite richly expressed in small `campesinos' and indigenous communities, where men and particularly women - though otherwise lacking political influence - are actively engaged in preserving their memories. Not surprisingly, these two vectors of thought share an uneasy co-existence. In these pages I will argue that these memories are actually considered dangerous on two fronts: first, because they interrupt our productive present and the system we live in; and, second because they challenge us to imagine, and even to work toward, a more just future, one not characterized by easy amnesties or corporate forgetfulness. I will support the view that memories enable us to conduct an honest reconstruction and analysis of the past, in all of its complexity, and then oblige us to integrate lessons learned truthfully in the present. In Mexico, such memories need to be listened to and integrated as part of our identity as a society and a Church for, if we do not, we will always remain a broken society and an incomplete Church. This position, along with the questions that it raises, will be confronted and illuminated herein by a theological perspective on memory. After all, it was Israel's belief in being in the memory of God that gave that people their solid communitarian consistency. Later on, the Christian community inherited this anamnetic culture as the core of its liturgical life and Christian praxis: "Do this in memory of me". Johann Baptist Metz reflects theologically on the "cultural amnesia" that drags us towards a dehumanizing progress, emphasizing merely technological advancement. Societal adoption of such an attitude inevitably leaves victims in its wake, namely, those who do not - or cannot - achieve the standards of success established by the technocrats. Metz identifies the destruction of memory as a typical tool of totalitarian domination. The slavery of human beings begins when their memories are taken away; this is the principle and foundation of all colonization. Metz explains that we must remember the memories of these victims in order to interrupt our present situation and activate creative resistance. He suggests a mysticism characterized by suffering unto God while, at the same time, keeping our eyes open to reality. Consequently a praxis is realized wherein we act as subjects in freedom participating actively in the construction of history. It is important for the Mexican Church to recover these memories at both the social and ecclesial levels and to allow them to interrupt us, because they constitute a new way for us to look back at what we have been, and to construct what we want to be. In doing so, we can be a community of memory and hope. / Thesis (STD) — Boston College, 2010. / Submitted to: Boston College. School of Theology and Ministry. / Discipline: Theology.

Développement de matrices mémoires non-volatiles sur support flexible pour les circuits électroniques imprimés / Development of non-volatile memory arrays on flexible substrate for printed electronic circuits

Rebora, Charles 19 December 2017 (has links)
Flexible electronics market revenue is expected to exceed $10B by 2020. Duento their mechanical flexibility, flexible circuits will enable numerous developmentsnin various fields from internet-of-things applications to large area electronics. Besides logic devices, memory is the second fundamental component of any electronic system. During this thesis, we aimed at developing nonvolatile memories referred as CBRAM (Conductive-Bridge Random Access Memories) for flexible electronics applications. These devices consist in a simple Metal-Electrolyte-Metal structure. The memory effect relies on resistance switching due to the formation/dissolution of a metallic conductive filament within a solid electrolyte. The use of chalcogenide glasses or polymers layers as solid-electrolytes offers many opportunities for future for flexible applications. In a first part, memory devices based on of GeS$_x$ and de Ge$_X$Sb$_Y$Te$_Z$ solid electrolytes on silicon substrates we fabricated and electrically tested. Experimental results were then confronted to an electro-thermal model, based on ionic current, developed during this thesis. The final chapter of this manuscript is devoted to the development of flexible memories.
