Three Essays on Health and Health Behaviours of Immigrants

Khanam, Farhana January 2021 (has links)
This thesis focuses on the comparison between immigrants and non-immigrants with respect to various health-related behaviours perspective/viewpoints. Specifically, this thesis comprises three essays. First, I investigate any differences in the factors for utilizing general practitioners (GP) and specialists (SP) between immigrants and non-immigrants in Canada. Second, I examine the causal effects of language proficiency on the health and health behaviours of immigrants to Canada. Finally, I investigate whether there are any differences in the claiming patterns of the Medical Expense Tax Credit (METC) and/or Medical Expense Supplement (MES) for immigrants compared to non-immigrants in Canada. Chapter 1 investigates any differences in healthcare utilization patterns between immigrants and non-immigrants. We implement a two-part model, where the first part applies logistic regressions to assess factors associated with visiting a physician, and the second applies zero-truncated negative binomial regression models to capture the frequency of using healthcare services, conditional on having at least one visit. Our results show that the patterns of healthcare utilization are different for immigrants compared to non-immigrants; differences are also observed by gender and age. More specifically, prescription drug insurance coverage and chronic conditions play opposing roles for male and female immigrants compared to their non-immigrants counterparts. Moreover, the number of years since migration is an important factor in increasing the probability of any general practitioner (GP) and specialist (SP) visit for all immigrants. Chapter 2 is to my knowledge, the first research on the causal effects of language proficiency on health outcomes and healthcare utilization of immigrants in Canada. My finding contradicts the idea that immigrants with poor language facilities are less likely to have a regular doctor. I find that good self-reported health is positively associated with language proficiency. However, I find no statistically significant causal effect of language proficiency on reporting ‘good mental health’. In addition, I find strong evidence that the utilization of hospital and mental health care services are positively associated with being English-language proficient even after controlling for many possible sets of factors. Chapter 3 contributes by supporting existing literature, but with a completely different dimension: the medical tax perspective. I am unaware of any previous research that directly compares the claim patterns of the Medical Expense Tax Credit (METC) and/or refundable Medical Expense Supplement (MES) for immigrants with those of non-immigrants in Canada. My results show that there are differences in the proportions of tax filers who claimed the METC and/or MES, and the amounts of a claim for the METC and/or MES for immigrants compared to non-immigrants; differences are also observed by age, years since migration (YSM), province and immigration categories. In both couples and single families, a lower proportion of immigrant tax filers claimed gross immediate family medical expenses (GME), potential METC claims, and METC refunds compared to non-immigrants. In the case of single families, a higher proportion of non-immigrant tax filers claimed MES compared to their immigrant counterparts. / Thesis / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) / This thesis focuses on the comparison between immigrants and non-immigrants with respect to various health-related behaviours perspective/viewpoints. Attack Surface Management : Principles for simplifying the complexity of OT security

Veshne, Jyotirmay January 2023 (has links)
Purpose: Operational technology (OT) environments face significant risks and threats stemming from Industry 4.0. The security landscape for OT is confronted with unprecedented challenges due to the expanding attack surface resulting from factors like cloud adoption, Industrial Internet of Things, and increased mobility. Securing OT networks has become increasingly complex, and relying solely on perimeter firewalls or air gaps is a flawed approach. Malicious actors now target OT systems for high-stakes ransoms and lockouts, exploiting the manufacturing industry's reluctance to disrupt operations. Conventional security measures are insufficient against insider threats and agile hackers who can maneuver within the network. These adversaries display patience and persistence, often waiting for months to gain unauthorized access.  Acknowledging the complexity of OT within industrial organizations, the objective of this master's thesis is to offer a set of simplified principles and practices that can serve as valuable guidance for practitioners seeking to establish effective Attack Surface Management (ASM) strategies in OT environments. These OT security practices embody a comprehensive approach to cybersecurity, empowering OT security practitioners to adapt to ever-evolving industry dynamics and establish baseline protection against various threats and vulnerabilities. Design/Methodology/Approach: This thesis utilizes Action Design Research (ADR), which combines Action Research (AR) and Design Science (DS) approaches. ADR is applied to address a specific problem in an organizational context, involving intervention, evaluation, and the creation of new IT principles and practices. ADR is chosen as the appropriate methodology to guide the development and evaluation of a prototype OT Remote Connectivity and the secure integration of MES components into the organizational OT environment. Findings: This study made a valuable contribution to the field by introducing five innovative Design Principles (DPs) specifically designed to simplify ASM in OT environments. These newly proposed DPs complement the existing ones and address emerging challenges and considerations in the rapidly evolving landscape of OT security. They provide practitioners with fresh perspectives, guidelines, and approaches to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of ASM strategies in OT. Practical Implications: The research project gives a comprehensive checklist of secure practices for OT, these were formulated and implemented, considering the entire lifecycle of OT devices. These practices encompassed various stages, from design, procurement to disposal, and aimed to enhance the security posture of OT systems. Building upon these secure practices, a functional prototype was developed to facilitate secure remote connectivity for suppliers/vendors and the seamless integration of Manufacturing Execution System (MES) components.

Assessing the maturity of informationsystem integration through people, process, and technology : A study of ERP, PLM and MES

Majdandzic, Albert, Moustaghni, Morteza January 2021 (has links)
Due to advancements in manufacturing digitalization and connectivity; industry 4.0,manufacturing organizations are seeing an increase of data volume, velocity, and variety.Information Systems (IS) such as Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), Product LifecycleManagement (PLM), and Manufacturing Execution System (MES) are used to handle thesedata compositions within organizations. The IS have different purposes, creating anorganizational, procedural as well as a technical difficulty to capture added value from data.Integrating people, processes, and technology yields a synergetic effect where data value iseffectively harnessed to create business insights and thus enable better decision-making indelivering value to the end-customer. This study sought to examine how a complex manufacturing organization can draw benefitsfrom the synergy effect of integrated IS, and consequently find factors that positively affectthe level of integration. The study evaluates a Swedish manufacturing company's presentintegration maturity and compares it to best practices found in the literature. The analysiscaptures gaps between the current situation and best practices, allowing for the formulationof areas of improvement. The as-is situation of the studied company was assessed with the help of an IS integrationmaturity model. A literature review was conducted to complete the maturity model. Aqualitative data collection was conducted to help both assess current situation and provideappropriate recommendations.  Findings of the study imply that there are different approaches for integrating separate orisolated components. These approaches depend on the interdependence and complexity oftasks. When interdependence is simple, different forms of standardization is most effective. On the other hand, when interdependence is complex, coordination becomes more crucial.Complex tasks require standardization of norms, while simple tasks require standardizationof output. Solutions and future aspects have been provided for collecting data value in a manufacturingenvironment. Mapped out various academic research regarding integrations and comparedit to a real-world case in order to find commonalities and differences. Identified a missingCritical Success Factor in an existing but aged assessment model for IS integrations.

Gendron, Karine 20 April 2018 (has links)

Etude de la dynamique hydro-sédimentaire de fleuves tropicaux par mesures in situ et de télédétection : le cas du Maroni, de l'Oyapock et de l'Orénoque / Study of the hydro-sedimentary dynamics of tropical rivers by measures in situ and remote sensing : the case of the Maroni, Oyapock and Orinoco

Gallay, Marjorie 17 October 2017 (has links)
The water of rivers, lakes and reservoirs represents only 0.26 % of the 2.5 % (35 million of km3) of fresh water available on the liquid state on Earth, but its quality and quantity strongly decreased these last years. Her degradation has consequences on the farming, the health, the environment and the economy of territories and is now in the center of the societal concerns. The objectives of the present thesis are for three rivers located in the Guiana Shield, in the North of South America (the Maroni, the Oyapock, the Orinoco): i) to use and to adapt innovative tools of remote detection to follow and quantify, on the long term, their sedimentary loads, ii) to estimate the existence of spatiotemporal trends, as well as breaks in the chronicles of data, iii) to quantify the organic and mineral part of these loads, iv) to appreciate the role of the natural (discharge and precipitation) and the anthropological factors (urban, agricultural and mining surfaces) on the observed trends and finally, v) to discuss thresholds of concentrations for the quality monitoring of the river water. The results showed that it is possible to follow the concentrations of suspension materials, for rivers Maroni and Orinoco with a relative error of 25 and 32 % respectively. Over the period 2000-2016, regular spatiotemporal trends were observed for the Orinoco, while they are increasing for Maroni with a break in 2009 and in decrease for the Oyapock since 2008 (in situ data). A strong link with the increase of the deforestation for the mining surfaces and the precipitation is observed for the Maroni catchment while for the Oyapock the trend is explained by the specific water discharge. For two years of studies (2014-2016), the mineral loads represented the strongest fraction of particles transported in the Maroni River at Saut Hermina (on average 93 %) and in the Oyapock River at Saut Maripa (on average 82 %) with a high variability according to the months of the content in carbon in the transported materials and for both rivers. Finally, report C/N and C/Chl-a revealed organic matters of mainly endogenous origin with a strong chlorophyll biomass and especially during the low water period.

Untersuchungen zu Milchejektionsstörungen bei erstlaktierenden Kühen

Heidig, Katrin 30 July 2007 (has links)
The present study was designed to describe the occurrence and determine the causes of disturbed milk ejection (= MES = Milchejektionsstörung) in production herds. The question was treated in an examination with five parts with difficult methods: record individually courses of calving and the first milkings, observe the behaviour in the last weeks before the calving, measure psychophysiological parameters (heartrate, elektromyogram, skin conduction and electrical skin resistance) during a test of stress sensitivity and during the first milkings and an genetic analysis. Nine saxonian herds were involved. The data record was for 20 months in the years 2004 / 2005 and cover 1767 heifers. We found clear connections between social strains, they work in the groups of animals and was caused through suboptimal environment, and the occurrence of MES. We found more MES in herds, where animals had a chronical stress situation in the last weeks bevor the calving. The most important stressors are the presence of multiparous cows in mixed groups with cows and heifers and the lack of room for motion in the box when heifers are alone. The circumstances of calving and the first milkings are not the primary causes of MES in this study, but they can influence this problem. So we found an increase of risk for MES, when 1. the time between the transport of animals in the calving box and the calving was too short, 2. the calf stayed with the cow, 3. the time between the calving and the first milking was too short 4. the animal has health problems in the time around the calving. The animals with the highest risk for MES have low stress resistance are unstable for stress, have a low range in the herd and showed an introverted behaviour (timid, humble) in the test. There was no difference in the stress sensitivity between the herds. During the first milkings we found just little differents at behaviour and at measured parameters between animals with and without MES. Animals with MES showed a small disposition to overreactions or to restrict the ability of reaction in elektrodermal parameters, but the differences are often not significant. We couldn´t found genetic causes of MES. The heritability was h² = 0,009. In conclusion, MES is an herd specific problem. In the herds that were examine, the important causes of MES are suboptimale environment and management of the groups of animals.
